[Q] Accessing external HDD connected to laptop with ES File Explorer - Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I am trying to access my external HDD that is connected to my laptop with ES File Explorer, as it has all my media on it.
I can access folders on my laptop's internal HDD, but when I try to access the shared folders in my external I get the following message:
Login Fails
This may be caused by:
WLAN is of
SMB server is out of network
The IP is invalid
Blocked by the firewall
SMB service is off
The external drive is formatted with NTFS file system.
If this thread is in the wrong forum, please let me know and I will move it.
Thanks in advance.

[Solved] - can't read/write to ext. TF & USB stick on tablet.

Hi,
Firstly, I have trawled Google and many problems people have with ICS and apps being restricted to writing to the internal SD card, or even seeing/mounting SD cards and external drives.
This is not my problem, but I think it's related to the decision by Google to restrict app access to internal (phone) SD cards.
I have an Onda Vi140 10"tablet, but I'm not sure it's restricted to just this, so I've posted here. Please move if this is wrong.
I can, with all file managers:
1) See and read any files on any TF card I put in the external Slot.
2) See and read any files on any USB stick I put in the external Slot.
3) Read & write to them via the clunky stock File Manager.
3) Ditto both on my WIn7 x64 PC and move/edit files.
I cannot get Astro or ES file explorer to read/write - even after rebooting with the flash drive connected.
/mnt/sdcard - internal 16GB (System and apps)
/mnt/extsd - external 16GB TF (Storage of docs/music/photos etc.)
/mnt/usbhost1 - external USB thumb drive (Or Fat32 Hdd)
I don't mind ICS restricting to the internal 16GB /mnt/sdcard as I only install apps there, and am happy to save within apps to this location.
However, I often want to transfer a document from the tablet to my thumb drive, and vice-versa, like with my laptop. this is an essential operation for a portable device, and I'm both surprised and frustrated it's not readily working.
Given that the internal File Manager can do it, what's the problem?
My device is rooted. Could I install an app to open a terminal and set global r/w permissions for /mnt/extsd /mnt/usbhost1 - The system doesn't use them for apps. They are both just storage volumes. The whole system and all apps are in the /mnt/sdcard and that's unlikely to change.
Any assistance would be appreciated.
Regards,
David.
Solved on this very forum here! (Not sure why it didn't turn up in my search results.)
I can now read/write on my external TF and plugged in USB stick.

[Q] UMS problem

I installed slim bean rom and siyah kernel and when I connect to pc via mass storage I can see just sd card no internal card :/ whats wrong?
The internal SD cannot be mounted in UMS mode
intresting :/ on my Note or S2 it can be very easy :/ So best way to copy files from pc to internal memory is via media storage?
I always do it via FTP, no need for cables, but yeah, you can do it via MTP
via FTP? you meen like LAN internet connection? I sometimes use ES file explorer and connect to my pc via LAN but speed is very slow. :/
no, via WiFi, aka WLAN. The speed is about 4 MBps
what program are you using for WLAN? with es file explorer I dont get 4mbps :/ I get like 0.5mbps...

[Q] Note 3 USB Mount - Hidden Folders?

Hello, fairly new to rooting but I used to have an EVO 3D and when USB mounted to the PC, I had access to the hidden folders on the phone and SD card.
When mounting through USB on my Note 3 (rooted), these folders are hidden on both the phone and SD card storage. I can still access the hidden folders using ES File Explorer, but how can I access these folders through my PC connected through USB?
Tried searching and couldn't find an answer, and I was hoping that ES Explorer had a mounting option but I can't find it >_<, thanks for any help!

File transfer error

Hey guys so u was transferring my files to hard disk from my phone through otg...I am using WD passport 1tb...default file manager doesn't support it but es explorer works fine ...thy PROBLEM is that I am able to transfer files from my internal storage to hard disk but not from my inserted memory card to hard disk ...it shows operation failed and all my permission are on
If that disk is for usb3.0+ that maybe the problem i have issues with usb3.0 before. Also some non stock options can interfere with file tranfers.
Yeah the problem was actually the NTFS format which was solved by exfat/NTFS driver
Thanks for replying buddy
