I'm having this same problem. Accidentally backed up to my int sd card instead of ext. Can't delete it or move it from ES File Manager or by plugging the phone into my Windows machine. I went back into recovery and didn't see an option to delete from there..
I guess the recovery app is protecting them somehow, anybody know a way to get around it?

Unless I'm very confused, in the various root threads the above discussion is fairly common. The "executive summary" is flashing trips the counter and, to date, there's no way to reset it. The betting is the counter is electrically protected - that is, it's not going to be reset ever.
Can someone conclusively confirm or deny this?
There.is.NO.WAY.to.reset.knox.trip.as.of.now.

It's not magically or electronically protected, it's a flag tripped in one of the phone partitions when phone "senses" some unofficial code is being flashed.
I believe if somebody can backup that thing before root then restore it after, it'll show zero.
Sorry - electrically as in "fusible link" or something equally unalterable. I hope I'm wrong.

No. That would not be economical for Samsung when they recondition or refurbish devices(rooted previously) returned from customers. It's much easier for them to just re-partition,jtag and flash factory image.
I see what you're saying. I'm not sure that mass refurb companies (not just manufacturers) are going to take the time to do anything that takes any real time (e.g., flashing). The volume of phones involved probably makes it cheaper to just toss phones that don't pass a quick check. Or not.
Anyway, until someone finds out how to manage the knox counter, it's all just supposition.
From what I gather, this root/recovery method trips knox, but then you are able to disable knox via SuperSU. I have 5 GS5's ready to be rooted (delivered yesterday).
A few questions for those who have done it:
1. After tripping and then disabling knox, what is shown as the knox hex code? 0x0 or 0x1? Or nothing at all since it's disabled?
2. What does tripping knox actually do? I understand it's a warranty related item, but what kind of warranty things can TMO reject based on knox? Battery blowing up? I'm sure they can't reject manufacturing defects in the phone itself (dead pixels, etc), correct?
I see the Updated Towel method has a way to get to NF6 without tripping knox, but it's far more complicated and has too many "ifs". I'm more inclined to deal with tripping knox as long as the consequences are severe.
Any feedback is appreciated...

This may be of assistance:
It's a thread about the KNOX Warranty, etc.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2477209&page=7
I read the thread about using TR to Root NF6 after you have NE6.
Seems to work.
I had ANCH which I Towelrooted.
I then Odin'd NE6 Samsung Full Stock Tar and Towelrooted.
I then installed SuperSU.
KNOX Counter is still at 0x0 :good:
I'll wait on NF6. Towelroot may be able to root NF6 in time.

It is a counter on your phone that trips if you have installed custom firmware. Sorry to say I can't tell you where to look because I don't care about mine

Trip Counter (Binary Download Counter)
1. Power off Phone
2. Hold Volume- (Down) and Home Key and Power at same time. Let phone boot. While holding all three keys.
3. Once in download mode press Volume+ (up)
Here you can see the counter.
Coustom Binary Download: No
Or
Coustom Binary Download: Yes (2 counts)
how ever many counts you have.
To exit hold power button for about 10 seconds. Then press again to power up phone. (Or Pull Battery)
No this will not trip counter.

I rooted using the general root before knowing anything about the flash counter (coming from HTC, dont know the Sammy ways yet). After i found out, I finished with the Root without tripping the flash counter tutorial and it says "1" when i boot into download mode.
Since i have done the tutorial will my counter always stay at "1" or if i flash another rom or mod will it start adding up?
Im just wanting to know if i need to be careful with going flash crazy or not.
thanks.

It'll keep going up unless if it's your carrier's official rom, and to be honest, once you get "1" I don't think it matters if you have "2" or "48190238102931"

I'm no expert, but from all the reading I've done I have concluded that flashing non-Samsung content via Odin is what trips the flash counter, flashing a rom via CWM will not.

not doubting you but wanted to be sure if true for all roms and i guess maybe even carrier models? Some of the sites I read said other wise. Also, you need to raise the counter at least "1" time to get Root Access though, no?
which means we still need a reset app like the international ver. have.
..and what is max I can do ? Or does it matter if I have 500 counts? What is it for? Dees it hurt me in any kind of way?
mine says "custom binary download: yes (1 count)

Negative. I just rooted and installed CWM on my AT&T GS3 and my counter is still at 0. Flashing via Odin is what trips the flash counter, flashing through CWM doesn't. That being said, I'd imagine most if not all devs are going to make their roms flashable zips so we don't have to worry about the counter. I rooted via Odin but didn't trip the counter thanks to the devs who figured out a way to get around it. The thread is stickied in the AT&T dev forum.

there's no max, its just a way of voiding warranty
So we need to brick our phone good enough that they cant read the counter to get warranty replacement???
once the counter is [1] or higher, you already voided your warranty...there's really no max out or loop back to [0]
Hi. I'm planning to root my S3 and wanted to double check what I've gleaned from the forums before proceeding as I haven't found a set of comprehensive answers. (I'm on Australian LH1)
I'm rooting my phone purely to use titanium backup and certain root only feature of Tasker so I'll use CF-Root 6.4 which I understand will leave the kernel stock but install supersu, CWM and CWM manager. I won't be installing custom roms or kernels at all. To be on the safe side I'll do a nandroid backup straight after rooting.
My question is: can I then unroot and restore my phone back to full factory stock using ONLY the unroot option in supersu? (I prefer not to have to flash a stock rom from non samsung sources if I don't have to.) Also I believe the flash counter isn't tripped in this case so I won't need to reset it?
In unrooting via supersu does this automatically remove the 3 "apps" or do I need to do anything else before and after unrooting? (eg delete CWM beforehand ans supersu afterwards? I noticed some posts where this was a problem).
Many thanks!
AFAIK unroot option in supersu is temporary and not permanent one... Use triangle away to reset your counter and then You will have to flash your stock firmware via odin.. It will replace the rooted kernel and custom recovery..
You have been zooo==>ted

Unrooting your S3 won't remove any root-only apps. But they won't be functional, as the can't get superuser permission to access root functionality. But flashing a Stock unrooted ROM that requires a Full Wipe will definitely remove your apps, and you have to rely on a non-root backup app to restore your apps and data.
You need to factory-reset your device anyway since the rom will show "modified" and thus your warranty void.

No.
The only way to go back to stock is to follow the return to stock guides in the General > Sticky roll-up thread. This is where all the important guides are so as per my signature, please always check there before asking questions.
There are 2 guides as stated. The second one goes into more detail about using triangle away.

Jeez. Just saw that now. Yes didn't realise. I was searching google and came accros the op and just commented. Btw I solved my problem and reset the Binary counter by flashing stock via odin and restoring factory settings. GS4 i9500.
So I'm happy. Thank you
My wife's S3 keeps getting the clipboard bug, so she finally agreed to let me root it. However I don't want to increment the flash counter or use Triangle-away. I notice the US-based S3 models have su and SuperSu injected to stock kernels/recoveries so those can be flashed directly from stock recovery, any such thing for the international i9300 (currently on 4.1.1)?
When I rooted my S2 a year ago I used heimdall (Linux) and didn't bother much about the counter, while my recent Galaxy Tab 7.7 root used the original built-in recovery and was dirt-easy (along with not modifying anything stock). Is there anyway to do similar on the S3?

They can't deny warranty if they don't know. If the counter is clean I can just delete SuperSu.apk and su and there'll be no trace.
Regardless, this isn't primarily about warranty, as I've gotten my rooted (yellow triangle) S2 warrantied here before. My wife wants as low-risk an approach as possible, and I'm simply trying not to get into trouble
you can delete supersu later, sure, but you can also reset the counter later. what's the point of doing it now? the counter had nothing to do with safety.
and triangle away is the only way to reset the counter AFAIK, what's the problem with it?
INFO Warranty items to look for Apps requiring root >> Root or its tools >> Custom rom Counter above zero >> Rom status not official >> rom Odin status Custom .
Suggest you look in Development at the various root methods one without increasing rom counter it might be via Mobile Odin .

Getting mobile odin on requires root in the first place I think, so that's a bit of a catch 22.
You cannot reset the counter if you don't use TA.
what's risk are you talking about?
Yeah... what's wrong with just rooting, then TA?
If ever you need warranty, odin a stock rom and you're golden.
Just wondering is it safe to root or is there a root counter that will be triggered (just worried about warrantying phone if something happens to it)? If there is, can it be reset?

Software status says modified after rooting.
software status and a counter are not the same thing. Software status detects root while you are rooted. Counter detects that you have rooted after you return the device to stock/unrooted.

Excellent question. I think that this question is still up for grabs to be answered. Although, if there is not a counter, it is more difficult to disprove a negative. I think someone smarter than I will have to take a look at this.
My understanding is that your modified status gets reset when you flash back to stock.

I can confirm that going from root to unrooted and then back to root that there is no counter. When you enter download mode to restore a phone back to stock unrooted it does say that it is modified before restore but after restore it returns to normal status with no counter ever appearing to say that it was ever rooted.

You can always flash a full tar file to go back to whatever firmware you like. Flash away and if you have issues Odin back to the firmware of your preference.
