[Q] HTC One Max 4.4.2 update and battery drain - HTC One Max

I just got an HTC One Max and love it! I am getting pinged every time I turn it on to run the KitKat 4.4.2 update. Normally, I would just update it right away, but from what I understand, there is a bug in 4.4.2 that may drain the battery very quickly. The bug has something to do with a camera process running on the system. Have any of you updated your Max, and have you experienced this bug? I can find very little feedback on people's experience with KitKat on the HTC One Max, maybe because it just rolled out to the end users, or maybe because it is not a real popular phone! Not every body is crazy like me and wants a phone on steroids!!! Thank you for any feedback you can provide!

No battery drain here whatsoever. Only issue I hate is that I cant move files to ext SD Card or even delete anything in it. Have to plug it to the pc which is quite annoying.

There's a fix on here (available in play store for free) to fix the sd card thing. http://android.nextapp.com/site/
I'm on the new update now, I noticed there seems to bit a bit more drain than I had on 4.3. But I also am on a different version of stock Rom. It's not notiable really though and still get great life. I work a 8 hr shift and will be at 96-98% with light use/ internet radio on the drive there and back.

been on kitkat for a month now. i don't remember any incidents of battery drain.

Thanks everybody! Maybe I will run the upgrade today. How easy is it to get back to 4.3 if I need to? I am fully stock, not rooted.

You may want to S-OFF before you upgrade. latest HBoot does not seem to allow S-off

latest hboot from update can be soff'd using firewater
i have t6ul international hboot 2.49

SD Card write issue can be solved by root access and little mod. Battery is not draining like water but noticeable faster drain compare to 4.3 JB. Still enough for heavy use 24+hours.. 4.3 JB last for 30+ hours.

Agreed! mine also T6UL international latest hboot. no problem s-off-ing using firewater. succeed in 30second flawlessly. :victory:

I think I will just wait to upgrade this phone. After reading a bit on the web, I see no advantage to Kitkat over 4.3. I also do not want to root or unlock the phone while it is still under warranty. Now if I could just keep the upgrade message from popping up! ;P

No battery drain on this end. I'm thinking some people just want to complain. That being said I haven't run scientific tests or anything.

Android system mainly the kernel sucks the battery down after update...apparently in location settings it defaults to high accuracy which is mostly responsible

Downgraded what? from what?
In all honesty, the evo 3d on stock is an awful phone, god bless the dev's as i'd be pissed if they didn't do what they do.
Root and s-off your phone get a custom recovery and flash a custom rom, make sure to back up and choose the rom which most resembles her's, Leedroid does a good stock rom with enhancements.
Theres guides on how to do this in the dev section.
She was on hboot 1.5 and down graded to 1.4 she has ruu 1.13 I think installed when she used to have 2.17 I was looking at meanrom but it says I have to update to the 2.17 firmware

Go to this thread and download the zip. Rename it PG86IMG.zip and place it on the root of the SD card. Reboot into bootloader and it will automatically apply the upgrades to the 2.17 firmware.
You then need to remove the SD card and delete that file. Download MeanROM onto the card and then put the card back in the phone. Boot into recovery and flash the ROM following the directions in the ROM's original post.
If you used to have 2.17 you should already have the latest firmware. Even after downgrading I didn't lose it. Now, the radio was a different story

That's why I suggested what I did: mainly so the firmware, radio, etc would all be updated so there would be no incompatibilities.
Unknowns guide says to use the 1.13 ruu which it down graded the OS,when I got done downgrading the hboot and booted back up I was still on 2.17 but the guide said run the ruu so I did, but I well try what you said when I wake up

Yes, you have to use the 1.13 ruu initially for the downgrade, but then you update to 2.17 and then install a ROM (at least that's what I did).

That's what I did so far no problems other then her battery draining quick, installed the mean rom and her battery was at 64 percent and within 20 minutes she was down to 53 percent with no usage other then testing the texts

Glad it worked for you ! My battery sometimes drains 10% on a restart, so if you restarted during that 20 minutes, that might be why. Also, I've noticed that ROMs sometimes take a little time to settle in for some reason. MeanROM is usually VERY good on battery life (especially screen off), so I recommend recharging the phone and then testing the battery life. Also remember that the Evo3d is a beast and so screen on time is usually a few hours.

I don't know much about that phone. Does it have a bigger battery, slower processor, different screen size/type? All those could affect battery. Also, it's hard comparing different phone models. When I compare battery life I get now as compared to before I rooted, there is no comparison. My phone is faster with better battery by far. I get about 24 hours between charges with about 3 hours of screen on time.
I saw your post in the mean ROM forum. Their suggestions to reflash with Chad's super wipe first and to turn off 4g will help. 4g is a battery hog. Also try to lower brightness to the lowest comfortable level.

just downed hboot!!!!!
So I just did downgrad toolkit and I'm very happy I reccomend it to everyone looking to mod and have control overtther phone I mean we payed for them we should be Abel to use them as intended anyway its my first post however I've been hanging around for 2years learning and soaking it all up...the thing is I speell like worse then my 3year old but I was so happy about the downgrade hboot I had to say thank you....p.s. like the thread says bricking device is the hardiest part I was nervous for one and the timing he talked about was hard to hit it took hours I finnaly took it into my own hands and when loading to boot loader while the ruu.IMG was loading I connected via ac and as soon as it asked me if I wanted to update I said yes I'm almosted thinking it has something to do with battery being out prior that made it less difficult..so anyway thanks xda and sorry about the rambiling and I'm sure I'm in the wrong thread or something lol...

Screen not as responsive anymore?

Okay, well, for a while I was trying to get bootloader unlocked on p769, and couldnt figure it out.. and had the wonky touch screen and what not.. so I had to use cwm restore, and flash radio/touch fix .. and im currently on v10g ICS.. but something is weird.. ive noticed my screen is less responsive.. like I have to click things multiple times, or push harder then usual.. is this abnormal to happen after what i've done? or am I just crazy and its not really as unresponsive as it seems?(which I swear it is.. its weird)

It's the KDZ you have. ICS is no where near as smooth as JB. The reason being that JB has Project Butter, and the ICS ROM for our phone was poorly designed/handled/released.
If you flash up to JB again, you'll have that buttery goodness once again ^-^

hmm okay thanks.. I was just told to go to this backup because its good on battery life, and thats kind of what im trying to achieve.. is there much battery life difference between what I have now, and JB? because honetsly right now, my battery life is crazy good after uninstalling bloatware.. so, not sure if its the backup I have, or if its just from the bloatware i removed

It's both. JB is kinda bad for battery life, quite sad really. I wish some people would band together and make a mod to fix it.

Flashing with R&D tool comes with risk. You can get a security error, won't operate, or crash while flashing. Having & using cwm is the safety route IMO.
Plus using the offline flash probably won't fix the inverted u-boot (LG logo).

Im sorry, I was at work.. didn't really have much time to explain how I got it fixed or who helped.. but yes, thanks Kuma for the help. I appreciate it.
But there wasn't really anything wrong with the phone.. I tried to unlock the bootloader.. flashed the kdz, did all the shenanigans, but couldn't get it to unlock, and I was stuck with the wonky touch screen on the kdz i was using. So all I really could do is flash radio.zip and touch fix, and then do a restore of a backup I found on this forum using cwm, which Kuma helped me do.
Now im on v10g ICS, and the battery life so far is amazing.. I just am having a really hard time not letting this touch screen stuff bother me. Sometimes its so unresponsive.. I wouldn't mind going back to JB, but I wanna keep this battery life. Im just having a hard time believing there's this much of a difference between ICS and JB.. my phone normally would only last 12 hours, then i'd have to charge it again.. Now, its been off the charger for almost 12 hours and its not even at 60% .. so do you guys really think if I went back to JB, and uninstalled the same bloatware I uninstalled now, the battery would be significantly worse?

You are the best judge
Jellybean isn't that bad IMO, but I'm already due for a new battery. My phone is already a year old. Something to remember about Jellybean, the default settings for wifi(if turned on) , is to stay on when the phone is a sleep. However you can change it.
To improve responsiveness on ice you need to tweak the build.prop. I can't think of the tweak right now. Anyways I used android tuner app to fix it and I never had problems again. However, the app has updated and changed since. Some of the free tweaks aren't free anymore. I'll try to find the code you need.

Yeah idk.. I just know when I had stock rom from metropcs, my battery life would last maybe 12 hours of decent use.. now its lasting probably close to 24 hours without having to charge it. But if you could help me possible fix the responsiveness would be nice.
Also, I asked in another thread, which I dont think anyone knows the real answer, even after searching for it I couldnt find it.. but since im on 10g ICS, it keeps popping up and telling me to upgrade to JB.. is there anyway to remove the update notifications? I've read a few sites.. they mostly just say to freeze 2 things using root, and I tried that.. didn't seem to work. Just sucks, cause everytime I unlock my screen, it tells me to install it

I can't help you with the constant update nagging. There are a couple of threads on the subject, but they never lasted. However, I haven't tried them all, There's another option besides messing with those two apps but I can't remember.
To fix responsiveness add these tweaks to the build.prop
# Increases touch responsiveness
debug.performance.tuning=1
# Increases touch & video something lol
video.accelerate.hw=1
# Increases scrolling responsiveness
windowsmgr.max_events_per_sec=150

Hmm.. okay.. now do I just add that to the bottom of the file? or do I find and change the values?

[Q] Updated to 4.3 from 4.1.2... now PROBLEMS! Can I go back?

Hello!
I'm new to all this and I try to read and understand but the this stuff is way out of my league.
So I bought the phone last week, I'm talking about the HTC one 32gb and it came with android 4.1.2. Then the new update came out and I was excited and all to see what it has to offer. I updated and then problems or bugs per se started with the phone.
Before the volume out of the speakers was loud and clear whereas now is much lower and I get this popping sound after a notification or song, and it bothers me.
Before I was getting awesome battery life with my typical use and now it seems to drain without touching it.
When I charge the phone I wait until it's a 100% then unplug, check the battery setting and it's on 98% or lower
Those are so far the problems I've found, but enough to make me want to return the phone.
With this said, I was wondering if Icould go back to 4.1.2 and start there until a good update comes up. I'm new to all this and in the case that this can be done, could anybody help me out to go back? Like a "for dummies" guide or something would be awesome.
Thank you so much

Run the ruu for 4.1.2 if that's what you want.
There is no problem with the update, though. It runs smooth and everything is good to go.

All you really need is to have the drivers installed and fastboot unchecked. Plug in your phone and make sure it's recognized on your pc. Then just start the exe you downloaded from HTC.

Considering that ruu is going to completley wipe your phone, you should probablly factory reset your phone first and try out the update nice and clean. It may alleviate your concerns.

is it possible to downgrade without voiding your warranty?

Yes... Via an RUU.
I really don't understand why you would though, try a factory reset and start fresh on the 4.3 update before looking at running the ruu because it's gonna wipe your data anyways.

I'm looking to go from 4.3 (official firmware) to a GPe on my AT&T One.
The 4.1.2 RUU .exe is no longer on HTC's website (only 4.3).
Does anyone have the official HTC firmware RUU.exe for 4.1.2? If so, can I simply flash this, then get S-OFF via Revone/Moonshine/Toolkit to set up my phone for a GPe flash (that gets OTAs)?
Or if I'm on 4.3 am I stuck forever?

is there a tutorial on how to do this?
I've done factory resets and it's not helping. My phone is no longer reading sim cards and the "boom sound" is fairly low in volume so I thought I'd try to go back to an old version and see if it works

[Q] worth going to 4.4.2? on .136 now

wondering if it's worth the time to update. i've had a look but seems that the roms aren't quite there yet in terms of stability/battery life/ issues/ ease of flashing.
If you really want KK, go ahead. It's working fine, but there are a couple of minor annoyances, like micro lag here and there. Or you can wait for the next update which I guess will pop up soon enough.

That's because Google removed sd write permissions in kit kat.

Go for it. It's awesome now after the .757 update.
One thing though; if you notice that your battery is draining quickly and your ZU is getting hot, pull out your SD card and see if that helps. If yes, you probably have one or several corrupt files on your SD card, so a format and a hunt for the guilty file will be necessary.
Ah thanks.
any suggestions for a rom? not looking for aosp really, was just messing around as it only needed a twrp install
I have been enjoying Omnirom for about a week now and it works really well.

isn't that AOSP?
Just downgraded to 4.3 and it is muuuuch smoother.
want to try googles new camera and afaik it needs 4.4 min
Temptation for 4.4 I presume. This new features/apps requiring new OS to run. Sucks I'm still on 4.2.2

confirm.
4.3 is better
I'd say it's not worth it. There's no point sacrificing performance. Though standby battery on kit kat is better but in overall 4.3 is much much better. I just downgraded some time ago

So what are saying is that 4.3 is much much better then 4.2.2. In what way. Please explain thanks
4.3 is better than 4.4.2. It's faster, smoother and has less bugs. Also there are no sdcard restrictions. Performance on 4.3 is much much better

Okie dokie I'll try it. Which version of 4.3 do is the 290 the best

AT&T going to update us?

I noticed that most carriers have updated their M8s to the 1.54.x software, the one that includes the Extreme Battery saver and some camera mods....wondering if anyone knows if AT&T will update us any time soon?
I'm waiting for this update before I dive in and unlock/root/s-off my phone, but it's getting hard. I know you can flash an OTA after unlocking, et. al, but I really don't want to have to go through that process.

I don't know about waiting. AT&T may try to close the loopholes for gaining S-Off and root and pass those "improvements" along to us in the firmware/update.

True, but even if I don't wait, I could possibly loose root if I go to that update, right?

True, but that would probably be fixed by developers very quickly. S-Off, on the other hand, would probably be a nightmare to fix. Just a guess, though as I have no idea what went into the process.
I unlocked the bootloader, S-Off'd, and rooted the minute I got home with it. I'm still on the stock ROM with a couple of mods like the red text and removed carrier iq.
It's your phone and whatever you decide is all that matters. Enjoy it for what it is.

If you unlock bootloader and soff there is nothing they can ever do to block you from rooting. When you said you didn't want to go through the hassle of upgrading firmware after unlocking, it is faster and only one command to do it. As for your opinion, that is fine, but how can you have an opinion on roms if you haven't even tried one? It's just like everything else in life, for every post with someone having a problem, there are 100 people who are having no problems at all. I don't know if you are new to this but I guarantee you that almost every Rom out there is better than the stock bloated, carrier iq, feature missing at&t Rom. If you plan on unlocking in the future I promise there is no reason to wait. You will not miss out on anything except for the chance of soff.

Cool, that's awesome news! Thank you. I had the m7 before this and ran many Roms, so yeah, I know what I like and I know what specific features I like and right now, I think that stock is where it's at, despite the several 100mbs of bloat. I will not say that sense based Roms won't ever compare, because they will and they will surpass my expectations as usual.....and likely soon, at least that was my experience with the m7. I ran stock for about three months before I felt that another sense based Rom could compare to my personal liking.

I have seen that, but it hasn't affected performance for me. I see how that is irritating though. I'm going to dive in, unlock, root and perhaps remove some of those apps that I don't use. Really, the only one I like is Isis.
PS- Which thread did you find the info for installing OTA firmware? I couldn't seem to find it...
AND, did you use firewater to S-OFF? Seems to be the only option, I guess

Heck yeah! That was my thought too after reading some of the replies here. I S-Off'd right away on the M7, but that was different because there was a method to do it without going through HTCDev, but not so much for us AT&T M8 users, at least that I have seen/tried. Oh well.
