what's the other hole for? - T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy S 5

What's the other hole at the bottom of the USB for? I noticed that the USB cable that comes with the S5 covers both holes but I've been using a Micro USB to charge it...does it make it charge faster or something?

USB 3.0 standard plug.

i see...so it's mainly for data transfering then? or does it charge faster to compared with microusb (looking from bottom, i only have it plugged in the right side with micro usb)

It charges a lot faster indeed.

The difference is usb 3 vs usb 2. If you are using for instance an S4 cable you are connected at usb 2 speeds. The cable supplied with the S5 has 2 parts because it is usb 3 connection. You will definitely get a faster data transfer speed using the usb 3 cable. I would guess that charging would be faster also but I can't verify that. One of the big upgrades in the S5 is usb 3 compared to usb 2 for the S4.

That's also reliant on the fact that your PC or whatever it is you are connecting to is USB 3. You can't get USB 3 speeds if your connecting to a USB 2 port on the PC.

It's the one where she goes "AHHHHHHHHHH"
and you go "sorry"

DOH!

The faster charging only applies to charging from plugging into a computer. USB 3.0 ports have higher maximum output than USB 2.0

How many pins for the Wizard USB port?

Anyone know if the the HTC Wizard needs the 4-pin or the 5-pin USB Mini-B cable for syncing & charging from a PC?
I'm using my SONY camera's USB cable, and it has 5 pins visible inside. Dunno if it's using all 5, but there you go

Thank you very much. That's what I needed to know before I went out and bought some cables.
Yeah, it got 5 pins inside, for sure!
I have my original cable attached to my computer at work where I am right now, so it was easy to check
You can get a retractable USB-A to USB Mini 5-pin (the cable the Wizard needs) here:
http://www.pcmall.com/pcmall/shop/detail~dpno~141388.asp
http://www.boxwave.com/products/com...-a-to-mini-usb-5-pin-hi-speed-usb-2-0_579.htm
I had one for my Treo and I still have all the attachments (wall plug and cigarette plug) so they will fit right into that.
I am not sure if the phone can take advantage of USB 2 so the second link might not be worth the money.

USB 3.0 with Xperia

OK to use USE 3.0 speeds if I understand this, you need:
- a USB 3.0 port on your computer
- a USB 3.0 cable
As far as I know, you do NOT need a 'USB 3.0 device'. So we could transfer data faster on our Xperias using the above? I'm about to get a new laptop and will definitely aim for USB 3.0 if this is correct. Then you just need to buy a new micro USB 3.0 cable, like on eBay or something, true? Anyone done this yet? I'm browsing on eBay for a new cable, but the micro USB 3.0 end piece does not look like the one for my phone now. e.g.

USB 3 DOES require a USB 3 compatible device... i.e. USB 3 compatible devices on both ends...
Ah this is annoying, the first place I read it said you don't need a 3.0 device, the second place I read it said it works as fast as the slowest device - which could be 2.0. Info. is a little sparse on this, isn't it? But it's been in for a few years. Is it really worth getting 3.0 if adoption is so slow?
No, because our devices have only microUSB v2.0, so we can only have the speed of USB 2.0.
You can try, but you won't get more speed out of it.

You can use usb2.0 cable without problems, USB3.0 standard is backwards compatible with usb 2.0. You should probably get faster charge times with USB3.0 because of higher rated mA on ports...
I like the sound of that!
I have heard of many problems with USB 2 devices in 3 ports. Driver issues apparently.
I look forward to phones which support USB 3 because that's now a missing link the chain - the computers selling now have the ports. I was a bit doubtful of the 'real' benefits of the speed (I was quite young when USB 2 came in) but my God, it is fantastic. I backup my hard drive frequently and I am amazed at the speed every time.
Hi,
the only problem you can have by using USB3.0 port for your smartphone, it's a driver problem.
For the speed of transfert, you need USB3 port, USB3 cable and... USB3 device .
The connector of USB3 (device side) is different from USB2 and I never saw USB3 cable with micro port (used on our smartphone).
It's a shame, I can't wait for USB 3.0 phones! I didn't care much about until I got my first USB 3.0 hard drive...wow
but why need usb 3.0?
the best would be a class 10 sdcard -- so writing files into the phone's memory card is faster.
10 sd will be enough
Yep ultimately I would prefer to use a phone's flash memory. I've experimented with music library management on Android but I for my next option I think I'd go with an iOS device.

[Q] MHL cable and OTG cable

If you connect the MHL cable to the device and the OTG cable to the MHL cable the device can't detect the OTG cable.
How can I make this work? I've seen videos in youtube that they connect their device to the TV at the same they have USB bluetooth mouse and keyboard connected.
Anyone tried using MHL cable and OTG cable at the same time?

According to some of wikipedia entries it should be possible to use mhl and usb otg at the same time with a 11-pin mhl-hdmi adapter.
Wikipedia said:
11-pin MHL-USB Connector
The Samsung Galaxy S III uses a connector that is similar to the original 5-pin MHL-USB connector, but it uses 11-pins in order to achieve a few functional improvements over the 5-pin design.
It supports the use of USB and MHL simultaneously (note that the new Samsung 11-pin MHL-HDMI adapter also has a USB-OTG port).
Samsung’s Galaxy S III can power the MHL-HDMI adapter. Although this can theoretically also be done with the standard 5-pin micro-USB connector, the Galaxy S III's 11-pin connector is believed to be the first smartphone that supports this functionality.

So, it should work. But I couldnt make it work at the moment
I also got one of these 11-pin connectors and like it seems only the S3 has these adapters, so why the **** doesnt it work?? :/
I already asked sammy on facebook, just wondering what they will answer^^
Hopefully we will have some pos. results, dude.

How would that work since the micro USB connection on the mhl cable is for power / charger?
In those YouTube videos is it possible that they have the mhl cable connected to the TV and power source, and the keyboard and mouse connected wirelessly via Bluetooth?
Confused because you said USB Bluetooth mouse and keyboard. From what I know they aren't USB.

Samsung should eventually release a dock to use both so unless someone figures it out first you'll just have to wait, because if it just took an 11 pin USB cable someone would have got it working already and we'd know about it, so I reckon it might have some extra circuitry to make it recognised by the phone.
Guys, as I already posted, the connector has 11 pins, so it should be possible to use OTG and MHL features at the same time. thats the only reason sammy brought out this connector and also cause of incompability with the 5-pin connector.
So they should bring the f*ck out somethin for the phone that activates this feature.
And a big problem I have with my mhl-connector is that I cant configure the output
on my 2 TVs at home I get 1080i, (both only 1080i capable), but the picture is kinda oversized so I cant see 100% percent of the picture, only 90% or smt like this.
But the funny part is, that I get on my 1680x1050p PC monitor only 576p screen, what actually sucks So it would be awesome if I could choose the resolution I want to have. But I guess its a thing of the connector (maybe it choose the resolutions iself).
cheers
so the one in the videos using keyboard and mouse are bluetooth thru phone?

They should do iut fast. I'm waiting so hard for everything get connected with my Phone. It will be awsome if I don't need my Pc anymore.
To use the MHL cable you must have power connected to the adapter.

That's damn funny because I have wanted to know whether that would work as well, lol.
Did seriously consider trying but as I was on holiday if they broke, I wouldn't be able to get replacement so didn't try it.
In theory I would think it could work, but only if you could somehow wire in power to the hdmi adapter as it appears to need that to run the hdmi aswell as provide power to the phone, at least enough that once the usb adapter tries to demand power to run it isn't enough for the phone to output.
As to whether this is just a a stupid guess and assumption of how the devices and being a noob, I don't know.
If you can get a micro female to male adapter with a usb splitter for power then technically I can't see why it wouldn't work if the limitations are physical as oppose to software based (whole other issue I have no clue about).
EDIT: Wow, when I started that post no one had replied, err, seems a little redundant now, lol. My bad. Also, this 5 minute wait to point this out, have seemed really long...
guess we'll have to wait for that dock.

For now it's leading edge, heck I don't even have PCs with it yet but going forward it is the new standard. Like the 5g wifi speed 2x faster than normal wifi, will McDonald's have it doubtful but I have it at home! So I welcome faster usb speed, 10x I think.

That's why we have these forums I suppose
I am still hoping that this is a sign that Samsung is about to release the micro sd cards that were rumored earlier this year with reads around 150MB/S. This would make sense because 3.0 can handle around 300MB/s. Just a hope though. If they were not releasing it, it would not make too much sense to add 3.0 to a device with 2.0 speeds in its memory or the current sd.
I am using mine with an extreme 32 gb sandisk. I copied 10 gigs of movies in about 2.5 min. I didn't have a stop watch but I was damn impressed. I did a full twrp 4.6 gb backup in about 400 sec @ 30mb a sec... the card is supposed to be 80mb a sec so it might be internal bottleneck we are not rightly seeing. All in all I am loving this phone...
I'll be especially interested in seeing a USB 3.0 OTG adapter... But then I guess I'd had to buy a USB 3.0 HDD...

I have a small external drive that's powered off a USB 3.0 drive on my laptop. It's amazingly fast. Data copies at 100mb/s.

Will I still be benefited in terms of charging speed? Trying to decide whether I should buy few extra USB 3.0 cable.

I am sorry, I missed the point of both of your questions @martinliu & @inco9nito99 . Updated answers below:
@martinliu - No, charging through a 3.0 cable on a 2.0 port will not increase charging speed...and you wouldn't be able to plug a 3.0 cable into a 2.0 port in the first place since they have different ends due to there being an additional bus (8 wires instead of 4), so it's a moot point.
@inco9nito99 - The note 3 comes with a 2 amp wall charger and a usb 3.0 cable out of the box. Typical wall outlets allow WAY more output than 2 amps so you should be able to charge via the wall outlet at a max speed of the charger (plug part) which is, by default on the stock Note 3 plug, 2 amp (or 2,000 mA).
USB 2.0 could output up to 500 mA where as USB 3.0 can output 900 mA (source: http://www.diffen.com/difference/USB_2.0_vs_USB_3.0). This means that the wall outlet can charge more than 2x faster than the computers 3.0 port and 4x faster than the computers 2.0 port.
2000 mA wall vs. 900 mA 3.0 port vs. 500 mA 2.0 port
Hope this helps guys!

Micro-USB plug hub with Ethernet

Does a micro-USB hub with ethernet that has at least 3 USB ports exist? I despise chaining a bunch of dongles, so I'd like to see if an all-in-one solution exists:
- micro-USB cable attached to the dongle so it can plug straight into the GNP
- Ethernet port (my experience is that wifi sucks on the GNP)
- 3 USB plugs for flash drive, keyboard/touchpad combo, Flirc.
The closest I found is this Samsung dongle (the price used to be $25 but it went up, can still be found around $17 on ebay shipped from China though), but it only has 2 USB ports and I'm not sure that it would actually work with the GNP:

It would be great if it had a micro-USB connector rather than a standard one, to avoid yet another adapter cable.
I dont think that will work. My friend got one and I plugged it into my tablet that has a standard USB slot and ethernet didn't work. I bought a USB (standardsize) to ethernet adapter works fine on my tablet. Now I need a standard to micro adapter
