I am rooted and on ToxicSwamp MJ4.. I do not care about tripping Knox. I would like to know if there is a stable KitKat and if so how do I get there from here. Do I need to go back to just plain stock rooted MJ4 or is it stock unrooted MJ4? And do I use unrooted recovery or TWRP? And bootloader. .. and Kernal? Things are changing so quickly it seems and I'm getting further and further behind. As you can tell I'm also more and more confused.
If anyone can help I would appreciate it. Please try to excuse the noob-ness of it all.
Thanks
J

Check out the kitkatkiller thread. Go back a page or 2 from the end. Micmars has a good write up there that should help. Kitkatkiller is currently a test version but it is very reliable and I personally haven't had any issues. Be sure to thank those guys over there. It goes a long ways

I would also highly recommend Freeza's fre3 ROM, found in development section. A few minor tweaks and OUTSTANDING battery life.
Good luck!

I havent found the way to do it, but if you go into the att note 2 themes and apps, they have alot of mods there that work for Scotts rom, im running a transparent mod right now.

It will teach you the things you need to know to begin to LEARN to theme any rom.
The status bar is in SytemUI - after that you need to learn and experiment. Every ROM is different, sometime the files are in different diretories.
And on top of that each time the dev releases a new version you have to extract the .apk and re-theme it in case they made some changes.
It's a good starting point,
REMEMBER TO ALWAYS make a backup in recovery before you flash your themed apps, cuz even though I think I know what I'm doing, I've bootlooped them more than once!!!!
Another great tool is software called beyond compare.
Break apart the apks, put stock beside a molded stock one and see what was changed. You'll learn a good bit doing that

I've been away a while. If I'm understanding correctly I can one click route my MK2 and install Samsung based ROMs without a custom recovery using mobile Odin. Can anyone please confirm it or correct me? If I'm right can you give me ideas what to look for in a ROM that will work with this method. Thanks and sorry if this has been asked. I did search but there wasn't much to look at in terms of direct solutions.

Personally, I've never heard of what you're describing. The only way I know of with MK2 is to root using this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2565758.
After that, your only option for roms is Safestrap. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2441441. You will only be able to install TouchWiz 4.3 based roms. Make sure they're compatible with Safestrap before you install.
My advice would be to do a lot of research. This is a good place to start. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2606501.
Good luck
Edit: Just noticed your profile says your using AT&T. This is the Verizon forum.

This is the Verizon forum, not at&t. However I believe mobile odin is only useful for restoring the phone to a factory state without a computer, not flashing roms, yet you must be rooted. I could be wrong though.

Well as far as I know Odin is just for flashing the firmwares and a custom recovery is for flashing ROMs. Maybe there is an exception, but I don't think so

Generally yes for recoveries and stock firmwares however it does need to be in a tarball file which would take some time I imagine trying to recall what phone it was but this was a few years ago a lot has changed since the n

Ok looking like I misunderstood then. Thanks for the clarification. I don't think I trust the idea of the safestrap. I know it's safer, but I have been flashing ROMs for years and the recovery method makes me warm and tingly. I don't think they'll ever crack into the ability to flash the way we're all used to. For every genius we have that's capable of figuring it out, Samsung has 10 that can stop it. I pray they get it, but my hopes are fading.

safestrap has been around for years for other phones and recently hashcode ported to the S4 last fall. I have used it since that time with zero issues and have been running several ROMs at a time to evaluate, with again no issues with safestrap. Not sure why you wouldn't "trust it".....as it gives all us non-MDK owners ability to run something else than just stock.

Exactly, I've been hammering away on Safestrap since my RAZR and it's really safe just like the name implies. Granted I could flash AOSP on the razr, but my guess is at some point kexec will come around for the S4 as well. Too many really smart people working on that project for it to fail in my opinion.
Anyways.... For now Safestrap is awesome, and happy to have it.

slowly getting there. Takes some time and while many SS roms are available they all come up short to my main day to day HD12 Rom....battery life is simply amazing
I have a Verizon S4 rooted and with Safetrap installed. I formatted a couple slots within SS so I could test out a rom or 2. I think, from reading, that I cannot use any ASOP version roms. Correct me if I'm wrong
I checked both development forums before I wrote so if I missed any thing please let me know.
Plus after you create a slot within in SS do you have to do any thing to the partitions or any thing else so you can run a rom?
Thanks for any help

i've taken some screenshots and hopefully these are helpful. ive only seen it actually happen once, every other time the phone isnt in my line of sight.
it happened while i was reading manga from my phone. any other time the phone is dormant.
i greatly appreciate your time in looking at this, and hope there is a resolution. i am very new to this entire proccess and was helped this far by droidmodderx and wwjoshdew
Am I posting in the wrong place? Id like to take this to the development section but my post count isnt high enough and I dont spam. Is there anyone that can at leaat give me a hint?

Flash back to stock with odin and reroot and install recovery .... then see if it still does it ... could be hardware issue or stay on stock for a couple days and see ...if it's hardware get it replaced otherwise it could just be a bad software issue that could be fixed by starting over ...

After looking for fixes what worked for me was flashing twrp recovery
hltespr-recovery-4.4.img.tar
Could you post a link for the TWRP recovery. I just had a modem crash for the first time today. I thought I was on the latest stable TWRP version, but if there's another one that may be better I'd be ok flashing that.

You've been getting modem crashes on a regular, sustained basis? Are the moments repeatable or unpredictable?
I've had them when completely stock with only root, and when running stock DeOdex, plus when on custom roms, on both NABD and NC5D (ie, before and after WiFi calling).

Very unpredictable when they happen.. I cannot replicate. They've all happened since flashing the NC5 engineering bootloader. Once i had 3 in a row all back to back about 5 to 10 minutes apart.
I've contemplated flashing the NC5 developers bootloader but from what you've just told me, they'd probably still occur.
Right now they occur maybe once every or every other week.
This never occurred while i was on stock NAB

It'll help if you provide us more information on what you're currently running. Are you on MJ4, NAB, NC5? Can you provide a snapshot of your settings page and of the update notification.
Our answer will depend on what you're currently running.
