[Q] GT-i9300, If rooted , cant have OTA update?

My phone is GT-i9300, original stock ROM is ICS, and i have update to JB through OTA which give me XXDLJ1.
Then I root my phone by :-
1. download mode, flash CF auto root via Odin.
2. restart, install Triangle Away and reset the flash counter back
I just want to have root.
So, the question is, why I'm getting "Your device has been modified. Software updates are not available"
If root , then can not check for OTA update anymore?
Or is there any other way? To have root only and everything else like just stock and can check/download OTA again in the future.
Thanks in advance XDA

Thats right.
But if youre on xda why do you want the OTA update anymore? Just flash a stock rom, update via odin as and when a new stock rom is available and root each time.

Thats a question that I was about to ask. . I'm having a few problems with my S3, and I want to correct them but I need root.
I also want to keep it stock, I was a flash addicted with my previous phone, but now I don't have time and I just want something that works, and I want also to be able to check for updates. .
Looking forward to more replies.

As I understood, you won't get OTA updates if rooted whereas you can get updates via kies. Flashing them will remove root though.

Thanks for replying,
I'm coming from Galaxy S1, to S2 and now S3, and Samsung is not the same anymore for me, They really listen to the customer, and always improve their UI and apps. S3 is a solution/improvement for all S2 n S1 complaints.
So, it is really nice to see some app/mod which originate from here at first, been integrate to stock rom of s3 e.g. the toggle, n the lack of led light of s2 n s1
Btw, development means, to make something unusable to become usable,, to make something good to be better.
I think, it is really convenience to just have OTA instead need to find a PC just to hv update.
As my S2, i gain root just by flashing temp CWM recovery through stock 3e recovery n then flash root. It simple as that.

I guess it is the device status "modified". If I understood well you can only get "original" when you flash a stock rom and unroot but please correct me if I am wrong as I never went back to original state till now.

Yes you are correct, if your phone is rooted it'll show modified no matter what you do.

just how often do you think an OTA update is pushed out?
Just use mobile odin if you want to flash any stock roms without needing a pc. Youll get the update far quicker via xda/sammobile than waiting for an OTA one anyway

[Q] How do I go back to stock ?

im on build JDQ39.I545VRUAMDK and rooted. I have removed a lot of bloat on the phone and it is not stock anymore. I want to flash a factory image so I could update to 4.3. Any guide I could follow to get there ?
Thanks in advance.

Theres a short guide in the thread that has the odin images. Basically download the image and flash under pda. Make sure you got all the proper drivers.
Hit thanks if I helped you out. Doing a little bit of reading goes a long way. Sent via tapatalk.

In case you're not aware, you're lucky enough to be on MDK which is the ONLY build to allow you to unlock the bootloader and flash custom roms. If you take any updates past MDK you will lose the ability to unlock the bootloader and will only be able to root. Also, THERE IS NO GOING BACK once you take the updates, so if you change your mind, tough luck. Most people here including myself would strongly advice to stay on MDK.

Stay on MDK. A 4.3 touch wiz rom won't be far behind. Be patient. Nitro had an alpha release already. Data isn't working but it'll get there.

Also very little difference you will see between 4.2 and 4.3. Not worth giving up bootloader for.
Thank you all for your recommendations, I would definitely stay with the MDK for a while.

question about the update

Just got this Verizon note 2 from a friend, 4.3 MJ9, rooted it with saferoot method and found that an update was downloaded to the phone. Where is this update so I can safely delete. Also, with all this talk of locked and unlocked bootloader, I was wondering what are my options ROM wise? Way too much Samsung junk to freeze on here and I haven't flashed anything since my Bionic! Thanks guys
Can someone at least tell me where the update downloads to so I can delete it?

Patience..
Update is usually in cache/
Anyway... 4.3 is also locked.. So your only option is SafeStrap..with limited ROMS
After you delete the update freeze the app SDM 1.0 so it doesn't download again.
Brought the phone out of retirement due to theft, thanks again!

Flashing different custom roms

I am waiting on a note 2 to arrive in the mail. It's rooted on stock 4.1.2. I have a few questions before I start tinkering with it when it gets here. I really would like to keep all of the spen features, so I have determined it's best to stay with a TW based ROM. If I flash a 4.3 tw ROM and don't like it or find it unstable, is it possible to flash back to a stock 4.1.2? From what I've read it is.
The only thing I don't want to do is an ota 4.4 update correct? This would unroot and lock boatloader?
Is there a certain rom anyone would suggest a noob to start with?

Make sure your phone is unlocked as well before you attempt any custom ROMs. To unlock search for link to Adam Outler's CASUAL on this forum. In my experience 4.3 ROMS are pretty stable. If you want to keep looted and unlocked, do not ever take ota from the vendor.

Taking an ota of anything above 4.1.2 will lock the bootloader for good right now. Flashing roms through custom recovery such as twrp or cwm of 4.3 and 4.4 is fine. Also, if you need to Odin back to stock for whatever reason only use the stock image for 4.1.2.
Oh and never update the bootloader.
Awesome, it just come in the mail. It's in great shape, and I have verified that it is rooted and running 4.1.2. During my setup, it keeps wanting to download the ota from Verizon. I force stopped it and was able to catch it before it downloaded.
Is there a way to keep Verizon from pushing uupdates or it being downloaded in the background?
EDIT: ok maybe I figured this out. I followed the thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2112221&page=4
I installed titanium backup, backedup sdm1.0, then uninstalled it. Is this what the majority is doing to safeguard against a forced update?

Yes. Either that or flash a custom rom when you get unlocked , most of them have it disabled

[Q] Instructions to Upgrade to lollipop with rooted kit Kat?

I have the note edge, still on kit Kat, it's rooted. But it's got a stock rom. I was thinking about upgrading to lollipop, but read I'd have to unroot kitkat, install the official lollipop, then root lollipop?
Are there step by step instructions, or maybe even an easier way out there?
I miss the days when we could just flash radio updates and any rom we wanted without doing anything else. Ha.

You have to Odin back to stock firmware. .. Let the OTA take place then re-root ..
Werd.

I assume that this hasn't changed at all?
OK2 isn't rooted yet, so flash the OG1 stock rom for lollipop and root that one. Don't take the OTA though cause you'll lose root.

I'm sure I do somewhere. But it isn't a fresh install. It has my hacks and my own settings and my everything including any personal info they it stores? I. E. Google wallet info and lte encryption keys.
Thats no problem if you're still on KitKat make a new backup excluding the data and cache partitions, hopefully thas not too much for a friendly request lol
