Without an insecure boot.img you cannot write to your system. So what happens is the kernel flashes...but the required modules that build with it do not get pushed...so stuff gets borked.
If you are unsure what an insecure boot.img is...it is literally a few lines in the ram disk code that change ro to rw (read only to read write).

Yes. Having root means you have su binaries on the phone. It has nothing to do with the boot.img. The boot.img is only the kernel (zImage) and ramdisk (files that link the kernel to the system).
I was one of the first to flash this last night. I immediately checked the schedulers and gov's. I've had it on the max gov and haven't had any issues. I do notice a little more snappiness but I don't know if it's just placebo or not. GPS is locking pretty well. Everything seems to be in order. I don't know about this insecure kernel thing but I'm running Fly's rom so I'm assuming I'm good. Nothing has flaked out or got borked so I'm assuming I'm good to go.
is FauxSound Audio control apk boost headphone volume only ?

Quick question. So the kernel runs at a default of 1512mhz right? And you'd have to manually set it to 1.9ghz if you'd want that speed? Was hoping someone could clarify.

Thanks for clarifying mate. I just flashed it and I'm going to leave it running the way you set it up, don't see a reason to stray away from stock settings. Everything is running smoothly, good job on the kernel man.
I also just noticed that all the default settings are highlighted in bold silly of me to not look properly

No issue with root loss for me running CM with superSU, battery is at 92% with 1hour 10min screen on so is looking pretty good, and has been a lot smoother than Faux kernel!

So I look to have resolved the root issue. (fingers crossed)
Can you please give r8 (download here) a try and report back. You will need to flash ROM first if your still on r7.
Have tested it myself, looks to work OK on cm10 and stock.
Thanks
Trying r8, everything seems fine so far, kept root too However I would suggest people try ondemand instead of interactive, it gives as good performance with fewer random CPU spikes and no insane ramping on touch, it's what the nexus 4 uses by default now and i think it's the best balance
with r8 root is working just fine

I haven't known about qualcomm variant before, so this kernel is for exynos only.
@hensk, I dont have any specific profiles for now, because I'm also testing different combinations.
I tested the at 2.0GHz and performance govenor and I didn't notice any heat.
I recommend 500-1.8 for a15 cores and 200-1.8 to a7.. But you can set limit for a15 200-2.0. At this variant I haven't any lags and haven't notice additional battery drain.

Serious bug found in the custom kernel v2
Initially on stock kernel, when outdoor mode in notification panel was enabled, brightness was set to max for convenient viewing under direct sunlight.
But after flashing the custom kernel v2, as soon as outdoor more is clicked, device reboots. Not just once or twice but every time its clicked. Please fix the issue in the custom kernel v3.
And somebody please upload the stock kernel for the time being. Moreover can somebody please check & reply whether the same issue is in the custom kernel v1. Apart from this, is there way to remove the kernel modified notification appearing in the upper left corner when device gets booted, though it's not a major problem but a bit annoying & eye catchy.
Last but not the least, is there a way to receive regular updates in this rooted J700F. If not then where to manually download the latest updates & flash it via custom recovery.
Looking forward to a positive reply&thanks in advance.

yes
I've decided to go ahead and build you guys a ROM and kernel, despite having hardly any time on my hands to do so.
Testers are needed.
Reply below if you're willing to give both a shot.

This is great news. Been a Beastmode fan from way back. Not sure if I would be a good tester but always a good donate-er
OP has been updated with a download link. Please provide feedback here

Are you on MM firmware?
Sent from my 0PJA2 using XDA-Developers mobile app
Yes unfortunately I am going to have to second that it's just staying at the Samsung Galaxy Note edge splashscreen, I Odin'd stock mm firmware, flashed chain fires tbltespr CT-auto root, (it failed but it usually always does that), than flashed twrp 2.7.8.1, than flashed Micky's twrp 3.0.0.0; than flashed supersu_beta_2.74, than flashed kernel

Did itvwork after that?
woo! I will be testing this later today Cant wait
---------- Post added at 06:43 PM ---------- Previous post was at 06:42 PM ----------
I would like the fix for zerolemon batteries if possible, added
ok, phone wont boot with the kernel.
reflashed my stock MM backup, flash kernel, flashed supersu 2.74 beta, cleared cache and all. Just sits there at the boot logo telling me the kernel is not selinux enforcing.
I DID do the developer unlock on my 915p. I dunno if that matters

**** man we got a rom, all we need is this, I know it's probably annoying as hell to build for a device u don't even own freeza bur thank you brother
Sent from my SM-N915P using XDA-Developers mobile app
Yeah quite annoying, especially because what works on the note 4 doesn't really work on the edge
Do you have any thought what might cause this 'no boot issue' could it be we should fully wipe device than Odin rom than Odin twrp ?

OPTIMUS KERNEL
Hi guys, this is Optimus kernel for Lux. This is a simple kernel with no bloatware.
Only necessary features will be added. This is for marshmallow (Up to R15) and Nougat (R16 and higher) only. Works on CM/AOSP/STOCK Roms. Enjoy!
Code:
Disclaimer:
Your warranty is now void.
I am not responsible for bricked devices, dead SD cards,
thermonuclear war, or you getting fired because the alarm app failed. Please
do some research if you have any concerns about features included in this KERNEL
before flashing it! YOU are choosing to make these modifications, and if
you point the finger at me for messing up your device, I will laugh at you.
FEATURES:
- Updated to latest CM-14.1 Sources
- Compiled With UBER 5.X Toolchain
- Full -03 support with device specific Cortex-A53 tweaks & other optimizations
- KCAL - Advanced color control driver by savoca
- random: squashed entropy tweaks & optimizations
- CPU overclocked to 1.7 GHz (Big) & 1.2 Ghz (Little)
- Added Optimus & Lionfish governor
- Undervolted to reduce heat
- Added state notifier driver
- Clusterplug by squid2
- cpu_boost: new enhancements including wakeup and hotplug boost
- Added zen, tripndroid & sioplus I/O schedulers
- Added toggles for disabling wlan wakelocks
- Optimized ARM RWSEM Algorithm
- Optimized Square Root Algorithm
- KGSL & Devfreq patches
- Disabled CRC check: 30% Performance boost
- arm/dts: msm8916: enabled bam_dmux fast shutdown flag
- Optimized MDSS panel routines to save power
- Added System Wide Power Efficient Workqueues
- VFP HardFloat
- Updates to zram,zsmalloc,irq etc
- Sched & Cpufreq Tweaks
- Removed some debug and logging options
- Enabled Advanced TCP Congestions
- CM14.1 Profiles compatibility
- Many more (check github)
How to Flash:
1. Download the kernel and place it into your phone storage
2. Reboot into recovery
3. Install the kernel
4. (optional) Wipe Dalvik/ART Cache and Cache partitions
5. Reboot and enjoy!
You need ROM's default kernel before flashing this as this kernel uses Anykernel2 by @osm0sis (huge thanks to him). Make sure you have it otherwise clean flash the kernel with the rom to avoid any issues.(At least dirty flash rom+kernel)
DOWNLOAD:
R16+ is only for Nougat, 10 to 15 is for Marshmallow

Thank you @GtrCraft ! Nice to try this new kernel...feels snappier and very stable :good:
Thanks! Installing now. Not to hate on other devs but i'm happy to see a kernel not entirely based on Squids.
I can also confirm good battery life on this kernel. Should be at least as good as squid one. Thanks for a new kernel Nick.
Running nice and steady. Like all the new io schedulers and wakelock extra's. Great kernel and thank you.
Its just Optimus Kernel ported from Osprey to Lux. But thanks guys

There's no way to only flash stock kernel right? Need to reflash entire firmware?

That's right. You will lose wifi when restoring stock kernel. Easiest is restoring a recent nandroid backup. Next time you flash a new ROM and you are finished setting it up,make a nandroid backup before flashing a custom kernel. Takes only 2 minutes to restore to stock using a nandroid backup.
This kernel is stable and has no issues as such! Hope the dev adds some amazing features to it in the future!

Working for everything you just said, I'm actually getting more battery than squid's and better performance!
Working perfectly with Epsilon Rom btw.

so it is safe to flash this kernel overwriting other custom kernel without the need to flash an entire rom.

Worked for me too, on Epsilon Rom, you get Squid's by default, I just dirty flashed Optimus Kernel and that's it, working perfectly.

I should not do that, Optimus isnt based on Squid kernel but on CM's. You have to dirty flash rom first like said in OP
I was on stock rom with squids kernel a few minutes ago. Now running on optimus.
