[Q] Can rooting disable international roaming? - Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

My venerable Samsung Galaxy S i9000 (rooted, Android 4.2.2 using CyanogenMod 10.1.2 ROM, on Virgin UK) has always served me very well when roaming abroad, and up to last year I had no problems with data connections. I'm just back from France, and could not get any data connection for the entire 2 weeks I was away (I bought a travel pass of course, and got confirmation of validity). This is totally unprecedented. I spent hours on the phone (calls and texts were OK) to Virgin, who variously said they needed to refresh my account settings at their end, then that there were known European network issues, and then that the problem was with the phone. I was told to turn on international roaming, but I don't have that option. The options at Settings>networks>mobile networks are:
Data enabled - ticked
Data roaming - ticked
National data roaming - ticked
Access point names
Use only 2G networks - unticked
Network operators
I don't have anything called international data roaming, and indeed have never seen this on any Android version I have ever had. I have seen images of other phones where `data roaming' is replaced by `international data roaming', and I'm sure there is no technical difference. Roaming is roaming surely?
I am very suspicious that there is actually nothing wrong with my phone, and that something odd is going on with Virgin. The reason is that last year I was running Android ICS using a different ROM, and mobile data kept turning off. This went on for over a week until Virgin found it was their fault and fixed it. At that time they never mentioned international roaming. I've done the usual searches and not turned up anything useful. There can't be anything wrong with the handset because data access turned straight back on when I got back to the UK. Can anyone shed any light?

Hmm. Calls and texts were working though, just not data? And it wasn't an APN setting? I'm assuming they had you check those. Did it show you were connected to data but there was no data transfer? In Settings > About Phone > Status - what would it say? Disconnected? You've used the phone on that other network before? It's possible that the other carrier's data frequencies aren't supported by the phone.

Yes they got me to check all settings and all were OK, except that according to Virgin there should be this `international data roaming' option which I don't have. The signal strength icon on the home screen showed a little R not a little H as normal. So I don't think there was any data connection. My key question though is whether there is any evidence at all that rooting affects roaming. I've been searching the web for over a week and found nothing about that. Frankly I don't believe it.

[Q] Data Roaming popup

In Settings->Wireless Networks->Mobile Networks,
I have "Data Roaming" unchecked.
I'm in an area when my weak-signal 2G connection on T-mobile frequently drops out and restores. Every time it restores, a popup graciously informs me: "Attention! Data Roaming will incur extra charges. Disable Data Roaming?" I must click yes to dismiss the window.
I don't get what part of the setting (Data Roaming: UNCHECKED) the OS doesn't understand!
Am I missing something or is there a special way to really disable data roaming or get rid of the popups?
thanks!

Does it still show that it is connected to data when it is roaming?

I sometimes see the Edge symbol in the top row. I just figured out that a couple of other carriers are sometimes weakly picked up at my location. I have a pay-as-you-go tmo sim in the phone (unlocked). I thought data roaming was not a possibility anyhow (I'm a noob at this). I only want to use 2G for phone, and wireless for data.
What I'm really hoping for is to NOT be asked to disable data roaming, since I made that setting.

Well here is a better option. Go into Settings>> Wireless and Network >> Mobile Networks >> Access Point Names >> Click on Menu & select New APN and create Dummy one. Then before selecting the back button make sure there the radio button for the dummy APN is selected. This should prevent you from connecting to Tmobile Data Services.

Thanks. That seemed to have worked, in that I don't get the roaming popups anymore. It seems that it may prevent me from roaming on 2G as well, but I'm not sure - I'm trying to figure this out whilst in cellphone hinterlands (in the San Juan Islands where the locals hate cell towers). Now I'm getting a string of popups requesting that I automatically search for providers, even though I've set it to manually select tmo. What I'm hoping for is just tmo 2G for phonecalls and SMS, with no guff from the phone about it. My Razr does that just fine.
Tomorrow, I'll drive off to a more cell-friendly area and make a better determination.
Appreciate the help!

I am glad it worked. Just set your phone to select automatically and you should be ok. Since you changed your APN, it will not connect to internet anymore using 3G. I know this coz, I used this while in Toronto last month.

[Q] Netwrok roaming tmobile/orange

Hi
I have my nice new SGS2 but there is no option for network roaming, only data roaming. In order for me to use orange network i need to re-scan and select tmobile/orange, but only get "G" data connection. When i rescan and select Tmobile i get full "H" data connection. Is this normal or am i missing a setting where it will automatically switch. I have set it to automatically but it does not switch between the two. (it's a PAYG O2 handset but unlocked)
Any ideas or will i just have to switch it all the time. Not a real problem as its onyl in my place of work that t-mobile signal is awful yet orange is fine.
Thanks
I think Everything Everywhere rolled out to everyone automatically but by the sounds of it you were missed out. As you're on T-Mobile you can sign up here:
http://www.t-mobile.co.uk/share/
For anyone on Orange, sign up here:
https://kareena.orange.co.uk/signal/
Also, if you haven't ticked the data roaming then tick it! You won't move to any other network than Orange in the UK. Just remember to turn it off when you leave the country.

Done that but still it does not switch to orange when i have no t-mobile signal. If i do it manually it shows great orange signal....just does not automatically switch...
It won't switch automatically if there is a T-Mo signal available no matter how weak or strong.
Or is there no signal available to you with T-Mobile?

I can't say for the SGS2 but I can tell you how it is on my Hero, and im guessing it should be same on the SGS2 as its an Android setting ...
If you're on T-Mobile, as I am, then scan your network and select "T-Mobile" only and tick the Data Roaming option. That's the only option you need and it's the only option available. This should then automatically switch over to Orange only when you can't access a T-Mobile signal. You'll know its done it as your network will be displayed as Orange as opposed to T-Mobile.
This is how it works on my phone and it works fine. It should be the same on the SGS2 as well.
Also apparently you'll only get "G" or "E" connections on the Orange signal. That's all they are allowing at the moment.
Hi, I have a Hero and that switches fine but the sgs2 will just show no network when i lose tmobile and not switch to orange. I see that if i get orange manually i will only get "G", its just the automatic switching does not seem to work. Checked tmobile web site and they dont have internet settings for the phone yet, but do have mms/sms settings...maybe in june when they release it they will update the settings and ill be able to down load.

They aim to do 3G roaming at some point in the future but for now it's EDGE only on data.
My network currently (ie when I drag down notification bar) is 'Orange T-mobile'
Sent from my Galaxy S2 using XDA App
Im on t-mobile and mine seems to auto switch without setting anything. A few days ago I remember it saying orange but most the time it says t-moble.
PS: the other day I found out my phone had been emergancy calls only for neely 24hrs the only way i could get signal again was to turn it off and on so dont know if that had anything to do with it messing up when it tryed to change

[Q] Force SGS2 to think it is not Roaming

Hello,
Have tried searching xda-developers, google, and apps to no avail.
My SGS2 thinks I am roaming when I am not, so certain Apps will not work as they were intended.
Is there anyway and or app that would override the phone/sim to think I am not roaming.
Thanks in advance for any solutions.
There is a option in settings-wireless and network-mobile network... Data roaming, untick that, i do not know if it does anything for you, and maybe choose automatic network selection, according to sim... other than that, i wouldn't know... It is strange if its roaming all the time in a home network...
When un-checking Data Roaming the phone will no longer connect to Data services as it thinks it is Roaming.
If selecting the network or leaving it to automatic it makes no difference.
I had this same issue before with other phones and was hoping with Apps or Root Access I would be able to finally force the phone to think it was not Roaming.
Did you by any chance use same sim card on all of your phones ? if yes, contact you service provider, because no phone should think its roaming all the time. I doubt it its up to the phone, as apps go, i've haven't heard of any, but if i find anything i'll post it..
Yes I have used the same Sim. It is not one of the main local providers in Spain (Movistar, Vodafone, Orange) but rather Simyo which is owned by KPN (major Dutch company). Simyo only sells sim cards on the Internet and are extremely cheap.
I have checked with the service provider and it is something they force, in that Data connection will only work when phone is set to Roaming. Internet, and Skype works but Rebtel will not activate as it thinks I am roaming.
I have this same issue.
Just upgraded my SGSII (GT I9100M) from the stock Bell firmware to Android 2.3.6 XXKL1 Firmware. After the upgrade it thinks it's roaming when it isn't.

[Q] Issues with National Roaming on Three UK

Hiya there,
I switched to Three's One Plan quite a few months ago, and it is seemingly great.
However, whenever I tend to travel through, or visit, places that do not have Three's coverage, it roams onto a partner network (Orange, I think).
As soon as that happens, I get the little "R" on top of the network bars, and a warning triangle notification which says "Data roaming - You havev lost data connectivity because you left our home network with data roaming .. " can't read the rest :/, although a bit of online research says " .. with data roaming turned off." Under the mobile network settings, I have Use Packet Data and Data Roaming enabled, and my APN set to three.co.uk (APN type: default MCC:234 MNC:20)
Any ideas as to why I can't get any data access at all? Customer services tend to get me round and round a circle, and keep asking me to try another phone, which I would if I could right now.
Did u brought that 5L abroad data packet and u can try to flash other modems maybe this help

Data Roaming not working on Android

Hi guys, I'm having this bizarre problem that I hope you could help me with.
I currently have an iPhone 5S, SGS4 and HTC One and share a single sim card between all three phones.
In my home country my SIM card is able to access data on all 3 phones with no problem.
However, when I go abroad and use data roaming, only the iPhone is able connect, both android phones are unable to connect at all.
I checked the APN settings and all seem to be correct.
Any ideas?
Thanks!

Have you enabled data roaming in settings..!??
If you are using a custom rom you can find it in settings - - > more - - >mobile networks... Tick the data roaming option... I've never tried data roaming as I don't travel much... But that might help you..! [emoji106]

Yup it's ticked for sure. On the HTC it says that APN settings are incorrect, on the Samsung the phone just refuses to connect. If I move the SIM to the iPhone, data roaming works flawlessly!
When I'm back home, I have zero problems with either phone, which leads me think this is either an Android problem, or a SIM card problem.

Then I guess it has something to do with APN's... Maybe it requires different APN's for roaming... And somehow iPhone has them by default and android doesn't.... Contact your service provider and get the apns..!! That's my best bet.... Good luck
