So I just got my Z2 yesterday and tried to set it up with my work account when I discovered that it erroneously keeps telling me that I need a password rather than a PIN lock. My device administrator requires only a PIN lock (and my M8 currently uses only a PIN lock).
I was able to somewhat get around this issue by installing the stock Google 4.4 email app and exchange service (which does work with only a PIN), but that app will not sync with my car to show my email on my navigation screen like the stock app would (and like the M8 does). Does anyone have any ideas on how to get around this "password" thing, which is clearly an error in Sony's software?

That's just the way it is with Sony KitKat phones. It's stupid. Just use Nine mail client instead of the stock version.

My concern is that Nine will probably not work with my car. I will give it a shot, though. Thanks for the suggestion.
By the way -- I tried Nine and it's fantastic. I might even stick with it even if it doesn't work with my car (and it probably won't) just based on the application level security. Not having a passcode is incredible. I had forgotten what that feels like.
Thanks for the suggestion.

You shouldn't work on email and drive at the same time anyway :good:

After a bit of trouble I got the new JI6 update installed on my vibrant. One of the "lovely" changes included was apparently "better" exchange support. By better I guess they mean that I now have to put up with a rather annoying and completely unwanted need to include a password to access my phone after it has been asleep for a bit. I quite simply do not want this. Yes I understand its for security etc, but no I do not want this simply because I need to connect to an exchange server. Does anyone know a way around using this feature?
Would it be possible to use the mail app from stock? If so, how?

I know this isn't what you want to hear, but just to make things clear -- The improvement was the fact that the email client more fully supports the ActiveSync protocol. The password requirement wasn't supported before, and is now. And the actual requirement comes from your Exchange provider. Ask them if they'll let you use Exchange without a password. Odds are they'll say no. But still, if they agree -- they can remove the requirement for you.
If it is not possible to disable the password all together is there a way to change it? I have been finding it very annoying to have to enter a password every 15 minutes or so, so if it can't be disabled, is it possible to change it to something else (ie 1111)? Would installing an earlier version of the email.apk work? If so, where could I find that?
Thanks...
I am attaching the Mail.apk that comes with the Thunderbolt and begging someone who is up to the challenge to mod it and allow the removal of the device admin so I don't have to put in a password every 15 min. I hav.e searched and every patched Mail.apk for the desire doesn't work. I totally need this as I am sure that others will too. Your work will be legendary.
That would be so awesome.
On a side note...Why does Sense only let you sync 3 days with MS exchange? I have always synced 7 or 30 days with my other android phones.....Mytouch 3g, G2, and my Nexus 1
I don't think that it has to do with the Mail.apk as I can synk up tp thirty days. I just have to deal with the password issue. So in the mean time I am using touchdown.
Search market for lockpicker app. It bypasses the exchange policy that makes you enter your password. It's a sense thing. And this app was made for it.

Says it does not work with Froyo
The people in security at your work will hate you for this. It's there for a reason. You lose your phone and work data escapes... you can be jailed and fined (depending on the data)
I work for a company that has to be hippa compliant and mass HI-TECH compliant. We don't even allow android devices to connect because of things like the lack of device encryption.
Help please...
I accidentally deleted Mail.apk using titanium backup (idiot). I tried to install the attached mail.apk from the first post but it didn't install. Can someone please send me an apk that can be installed.
Thank you!

That is the APK from the stock rom and I did the same thing as you. But I was able to flash to a recovery that I just had made. I posted that Mail.apk directly from the stock rom and it wouldn't install for me either. The plot thickens...

It's far worse than what my employer's IT implemented...
Our Exchange policies haven't changed (I know many people at work who are setup to receive email + calendar from our corporate exchange server, nothing changed).
I only have to enter a pin ever ~30mins. Then I upgrade my Cappy to froyo and setup the exchange account again. NOW I have to re-enter it every time my screen blanks (timeout), even for 1 second.
This is froyo mail app folks, not my employer's Exchange settings. they didn't change, my email client did.
I want it back the old way. Not to mention calendar only synchs ~5% of my meetings now. crappy appy on my Cappy!
Hi, first post on XDA, and never used android before! Liking it so far, but have a couple of questions and would have a couple of questions.
I am using an HTC One (from Rogers wireless in canada, apologies if i posted in the wrong section, couldn't find a section for this phone). I came from using an iPhone, so naturally somethings are very different. I am not rooted, and currently using Nova Launcher free. Would like to stay un-rooted.
My first question is regarding the email notifications for the stock email app (not gmail). When I receive an email, in the notification drop down, there isnt a preview for the email, it only lists my email account, and "new email" underneath it. Any possible way to have it show a short mail preview, similar to iOS using the above launcher and stock firmware (4.1.2)?
The other question I had was if there is any possible way to set up a geo-fence which would enable a preset passcode to be used when i leave my house, and then disable passcodes when i arrive back home?
any help would be great, or if there is a similar thread already.
Thanks!!

I use the default mail app and I get a small preview as you call it (see attachment), But I'm on 4.2.2 not sure if that was introduced with the update or not.
As for the Geo- fence you can accomplish this with NFC Tags or an app called Tasker would allow you to setup your phone to do this.
I also came from an iPhone 4S I'll never go back

I went into google now search settings and performed the voice training and enabled the option for hot word detection from lock screen and power off but it doesn't work. the only time it works is when i'm at the home screen UNlocked OR at the google now search area. Screen off or from lock screen detection simply does not work.
does anyone else notice this?
I don't have the nexus 9 but I did install the latest google now search and launcher from apkmirror .com and there was an always listening option in 'hotword detection' in voice settings of the google now. There was also the screen off detection option but it was greyed out. I had the always listening in all apps option enabled and it was working greatly but the next day I woke up and the feature wasn't working so I went into settings and discovered that both of those options had disappeared (not greyed out but freaking disappeared), its some kind of google restriction, they are remotely restricting users from using these features for some unexplained reason.
Maybe its the same for u or it might be something else.
Same here, bit worked arter reboot
It works for a while after a reboot, but eventually stops working after a couple hours.
Looks like a common bug, I've seen some threads about this same issue (and I'm experiencing the same problem, too)
Ok, let's hope Google is on it

think about it...you're in your car, the screen times out and you want to make a call using voice recognition....so you have to unlock the screen and then use the voice recognition... sounds like a dangerous bug to me....serious liability IMHO

I know, but the N4 doesn't support the neccessary hardware for this feature. Only the N6 and N9 does.

there is an option in Google Now -> Settings -> Voice -> OK google detection ....a check box exists here stating:
When Locked
Allow "OK Google" to start a voice search or action from a secure lock screen
so, it would seem that this is what was intended. perhaps what they meant here was that the screen has to be on and not timed out. dunno.
Yes, but screen has to be on. Only nexus 6 and 9 support GN with screen locked and off
Google search from locked screen works for a while and then stops. It's done this on my s4 and note 3. It is defenetly supposed to work from secure lock screen. In Google now settings there is a 3rd check box and you even get a warning stating anyone may be able to unlock your phone.
Google needs to fix this issue. I'm not sure what's up with these companies making screwed up software. Where are the devs, and why are they getting paid if they can't make flawless software. When I crash My car into a tree trying to unlock my phone and I press a law suit against google I'll bet they will fix it. Always takes a law suit to fix ****.
Oh. Anyone notice every app you've ever paid for or downloaded is under my apps "all" what's up with "all" I'll file my documents in my office under the "all" folder and see how quickly I get fired...Thanks for allowing me to rant.
Happy new year!

Major issue
My work emails require my device to be encrypted. I thought it would be okay since android 5 comes "pre-encrypted". However when I go to add my work email, it ask me to encrypt the device as any other android device (running kitkat and below) would do. So after clicking encrypt it goes to the green android screen and then boots up as if nothing has happened. If I try to update my emails, it goes through the whole process again. Anyone else facing this problem????
May be wrong on this.
Have you got either PIN or Password set up at start? - Without that then encryption settings are irrelevant. (or were in earlier Android versions)
Yeah I have a pin password setup, I'm extremely annoyed as I got the tablet for work purposes as well as personal use, instead of carrying a laptop around.

I understand your frustration. As this is a brand new device with brand new software its very possible its a bug. The other possibility is that Exchange may need an update (less likely).
I'm not sure what your work environment is like but if you were to talk to your network admin and show him the tablet and how its already encrypted they can potentially put a policy in place to not require encryption
Have you given Nine a shot? It does app-level security, so the only time you need to use a pin is when you open the app, not for the device. I normally use xposed to get around the exchange security, but started using Nine on my N9 and Moto X in anticipation of losing xposed. I'm very pleased with it.
Wow nine works like a dream and it has a nice interface!

Excellent suggestion! I too have used Nine in the past and it is a very good program!
plus it has threaded emails. which is the main thing gmail is missing with my exchange address.
Solved the problem. All I had too do was set a pin lock on boot up as well as on the lockscreen!

Hi all. I loved Nine and used it for my work email. I like that it allows app-level encryption since device level really really really slows things down.
However, after the most recent update, Nine is making it such that I have to encrypt the device. The reasoning is that calendar and contacts are handled by native apps and not by Nine. I tried to have Nine only sync emails and not calendar or contacts but it still requires the same thing.
Has anyone found a workaround for this? Or alternatively has anyone managed to come up with a exchange security bypass for gmail?
I'm on a Nexus 6.
If you've got a nexus 6 you should already be encrypted, am I right?
