Just got my s5 from T-mobile last night and shes beautiful
Just wondering does anyone feel the front facing camera gives you a funky look? Its making my head look super longitudinal as if someone has squeezed the camera! Especially when I position my head so show at the bottom of the screen. Please let me know have a great day !
It isn't very good, that would be my best guess

Your head may be defective, I'd take it back to a T-Mobile store and see if they can help you with that.
Perhaps if you posted a sample image (not necessarily of your face) to see if something it obviously wrong. The front facing camera does have a wide angle lens which might be what it causing you to perceive it as "squished." If you rotate the camera do you observe the same effect?
I knew one person would say that lol thanks for clearing the air Haha.. Anyways I'd be more than happy to share..
Also would like to add that I went to T-Mobile and all their phones including my friends front camera are doing the same problem it may be a glitch in the software. It's just how you angle it it had to be at the top of the screen or bottom.
Here is a picture of my face in the center and on the edge, I'll let you be the judge and try it on your phone as well. I am holding my phone horizontal for this one and it made my face wider if I hold it longitude my face will be longer.
Notice how the center picture looks perfect versus when you position yourself at the bottom or the top of the screen.

Hmm strange the s5 at T-Mobile they had for display did that but I will wait maybe it's a software thing that might be fixed within the next update.

haha thank god! i swear to you i went to at&t and t-mobile and used my friends s5 and all their camera's are like this.. it also does it in snapchat if you use that... pretty much anything with front facing camera..phone is fairly new and im sure people will start noticing it sooner or later! Shall we email samsung or something ? lol
I think I have an idea about what you're experiencing, I always thought I looked funnier than I normally do when talking a photo with the front facing camera lol. I found that I look normal before taking the picture but then after taking the photo and when reviewing it something always looked off. I then found out about the "Save as flipped' option when you press the settings button while in the front facing camera mode. I turned that on and it was better, granted all its doing is flipping the image but it just looked so funny when that setting is off for some reason.
Try it out and see if its the same for you.
It's not that. When you have the phone in front of your face taking a "selfie", try moving the phone up and down as far as you can while still seeing the screen and have the camera on your face. You'll notice your face and head starts to distort.
Sent from my SM-G900T using XDA Premium 4 mobile app
My guesses:
a) The lens itself is distorted intentionally to fill the extra "widescreen" areas of your display with an otherwise 4:3 ratio sensor.
b) The digital picture is distorted intentionally to fill that same extra void when viewing a 4:3 ratio picture on a 16:9 display.
Think of the days when HD (720p) was brand-new. Some of the first broadcasts that were in "HD" were simply 4:3 ratio videos stretched on the sides to fill up that extra space on your TV (versus having the "black bars" fill it instead).
It could be that the front facing camera just isn't very good, poorly made. I mean it's 2.1 mp. People still use their back camera for selfie lol

I don't have the phone yet but reading for education. This may be silly to ask, but does the distance you put the camera from you change the distortion? I know our arms are only so long, but just a thought.... Since it was pointed out that it does have the extra wide angle lens

Hey more knowledge to you my friend! I did a test with distance and I got the same distortion no matter how far i stood from the front facing camera, if I got near the top of the bottom of the screen, I would become bulging, and a little longitudinal.

You bring up a great point with the "widescreen" but it is 2014 don't you think they would have thought of a way to get a wider ratio with out distorting an image? This makes the front facing camera unusable to some. The HTC one also has a front widescreen screen camera but does not distort.

Hey good idea and it made a difference, I lowered resolution to 1.6 mp1440x 1080 and the effect was still there. 4:3
I put the resolution on 1mp 1072x1072 and the effect is completely gone. Ratio is 1:1
Then I put the resolution on what seems to be the lowest 640x480 .3 mp ratio 4:3 and the effect seems to SLIGHTLY be there by hardly noticeable.
For now I will be leaving it on. 3 mp it seems to be usable and not noticeable. But when I opened any third party applications that utilizes my camera like Snapchat it is distorted

Hello fellow Atrix users. I bought the phone recently from amazon. I have a question regarding the camera on Atrix. When i was taking the shot, I can see the dust like thing going on. However, after I took the shot, the pictures are pretty clear. The front VGA camera did this kind of thing also. Do yours act the same way?

Dust? Are you talking about the grainy effect? If that is what you are seeing, that is normal for auto-focus cameras.

100% correct. Even my $1000 DSLR with a $700 lens looks grainy when I use live view through the LCD (Which is why you almost never see any pro photographers use the LCD). Using a LCD screen (on any camera device) to see what you're shooting is more a general representation of what your aiming at than the actual outcome.

No.. it is not what i was talking about. The dust like thing is like you are watching a tv and something interference with it which causes it to show a lot of small dots coming up. it is something like this picture:

That's not as bad, but my Infuse had zero issues, same with my iPhone 3GS.
The lighting is pretty bad in this room as well, so that explains the difference between my photo and yours.
Edit: @SPIDERTECH: It seems to be on ALL photos in crappy lighting. Can't notice it during the day while outside.
Just googled the issue and there are tons of documented cases and complaints out there Seems to be an issue with the hardware.
Take a picture of something that isn't viewing-angle-dependent before claiming there's an issue please.
My first instinct is that the camera is somewhat IR-sensitive (this is EXTREMELY common in cell phone cameras due to lack of space for a hot mirror filter) and the screens being imaged have higher IR content when viewed dead-on. (In both pictures, the red spot appears where the camera is viewing the screen dead-on. In the first picture the camera was centered in front of the screen, in the second the camera was at the lower right aimed up and left.)

I'll take a further look at it tonight, but IR sensitivity is not exactly rare in digital cameras, especially cheaper/smaller ones. Good hot mirrors (IR-blocking filters) cost money AND they're large.
Yeah I have the same problem, I took pictures of the tile floor at my parents house, and it had a red center to it also, is their a way to fix this?
Also for the love of god, why does this video camera not have image stabilization? every video is shaky as hell.

Thanks for the reply. I was almost hoping for someone to come tell me it's normal. I'm only on day two of my thirty and I've already downloaded so many apps
Anyone want to try a test of a white sheet of paper?
Just tested on paper towel in a different room with different lighting both with flash and without.
It would be really helpful for a sticky with known defects so we can completely check out the phones for defects in one place.
I'm glad I didn't buy the phone off of Amazon. Would have made the exchange process a lot more difficult than driving down to the store...

Its your flash... Mine does it too, think about it though, there isn't nothing wrong with it its just that the light bounces off the white surface giving you that effect. Will only happen on a white surface, I say don't worry about it as its normal. It's normal we don't have high tech flashes... We have to live with it Haha

Only two of all these test pictures have flash. The one with my hand where you can see it's shiny (flash).
And the top paper towel pic without the phone shadow.
All other pictures other those two were taken without flash. Green effect visible without flash. Seems to be slightly less notable with flash actually.

Looks normal to me. So this is a rare issue I'm guessing. Will try changing the options as suggested and report back.
Now that I have taken those few test pictures I'm starting to be convinced that my camera is defective. I'm using stock everything never messed with any camera settings. Pictures were taken with opening the camera app and immediately pressing capture along with trying to focus by tapping screen before taking picture. Green results both ways.
I'm just glad I haven't put my 35 dollar glas t screen protector on yet...

I went through three Notes (display issues), and they all did this. Every Note in my AT&T store does this as well. Every iPhone I've ever used does the same thing (except it's red instead of green).
I've always assumed it was normal for these types of cameras, because I haven't used a single device in many years that DIDN'T have this type of problem. I never notice it taking pictures because...how often am I taking a picture of a white piece of paper?

Wiped my phone and exchanged it. Right out of the box I tested the camera in front of the store rep. Same green issue. The green issue is also noticeable in the viewfinder for the camera. I didn't specify that before.
so the rep wouldn't let me take back my phone and made me keep this defective one. She rudely told me to go exchange it in a different store. I'm sorry I paid three hundred dollars and signed a two year contract expecting a functional non defective device. I'm guessing that stores batch all have the defect. But I tested both note display models in store and no green in either.
These are all the pictures I've taken with this new note with flash and without with default options as well as auto contrast and matrix metering.

This would include IP5, note2, razr, razr hd, SGN. Only one better *might* be the htc one, but the reviews are about 50/50 on that phone being *better"* than the S4 in low light.

Turn on the low light setting on your S4.
Go take some pictures in low light (not a dark room!).
Say something like "holy cow" in your head and smile :good::good:
edit: really just wanted to point out the plastic, it's probably been missed in reviews, and will IMHO affect image quality for the 100% crop type comparisons.
Also, we have slow and fast motion settings for video, just like the note 2, this is a LOT of fun to play around with, and an easy way to temporarily eat up a lot of space on a 64GB SD card

Just used a fingernail...I was worried about scratching it too but once I got under it came right off and no scratches. I tried tape first but it wouldn't come up...had to get the nail under the plastic and that was no easy task.
Maybe a female with longer nails might help. I would've asked the wife if she was here.
Did you guys know that by default the camera is set to like 9 megapixels? Go into your camera settings and you can change it to 13. I just found this out today and the picture quality is so much better.

16:9 > 4:3 imo. Since my phone and TV, which are the 2 devices I view all my photos, are 16:9 I think I'll stick to 9mp.
I can't tell that much of a difference in quality unless I zoom really close
I found this out while taking 110 pictures at the Dragstrip. I'd rsther have the widescreen myself. Also to note I went to my car for lunch and plugged the phone in which was at 49% and within 20 minutes of charging it was at 90%!
Yeah this phone charges crazy fast. The charger it comes with is 2.0A but even using 1.0A charger it charges faster than any of my previous phones
Yeah, my S4 charges like 1-2% every minute.

Having the GPS lock issues as well. What's strange is that it did work initially because that was the first thing I tested right after flashing. This is after a complete wipe (3x data, system caches, etc) using TWRP. If I pull up maps, it does find exactly where I am, but if I try to do navigation or use GPS status, it just sits on looking for GPS location.

Literally nothing LOL. I have several posts open and put that response in the wrong one.
yeah the first thing I do with a new phone and rom is take it out of wide-screen mode and put it into 4:3...being in wide-screen mode is the equivalent of cropping and zooming... I'd rather have the original picture at 4:3 because then it's not cutting off the top and bottom like wide screen does.

cool thanks.

you can, but you'll need to crop. taking the pic at 4:3 gives you more area to crop from. 16:9 tosses out the extra stuff at the beginning.

4:3 or 16:9 you'd have to crop to print a 4x6 (which is 3:2 as a ratio)
I actually worked in photo labs for a number of years and cropping has been confusing for people for a LONG time. Even with 35mm film most of the common print sizes (3x5, 8x10, 5x7) require cropping 4x6 is the same ratio as 35mm film so you get more or less full frame...but even then there would often be a bit of masking in the camera and again when printing the negative.
Even the ever popular "Glossy 8x10" doesn't match 35mm films aspect ratio (which was why we also offered 8x12 which did but most people didn't like because there aren't many cheap frames made for 8x12)
We had one client who drove us absolutely crazy. All he did was take photos of victorian houses. He'd come in about once a month with 5-10 rolls of film 1 house per frame. And he insisted on each one being perfectly centered because he took a lot of time and effort to center them in his camera. Except his camera wasn't consistent on how it would advance the film so even on his negatives each was centered slightly differently even though to him through the viewfinder they were all perfect. Then he wanted 3x5's because they were cheaper than 4x6's but that meant more cropping and he'd get upset that part of the image that's there on the negative was missing in the print...he somehow expected us to warp reality to get the full image in AND centered. To top it all off the guy was just physically unpleasant to be around, he had long hair that literally dripped grease (we had to wash the counters after he left!) and brillo pad chest hair with bits of what looked like cheese in it - but before picking up his photos he'd pull out a brand new set of white cotton gloves and inspect each one - any that weren't centered to his liking he insisted on having redone (and unfortunately our stores policy let him do that.) Still have nightmares about him.
TLDR: Both 16:9 and 4:3 are a different aspect ratio than a 4x6 or 3x5 or 8x10 print. To match what people are used to with 35mm film cameras you'd need a 3:2 aspect ratio. 4:3 is closer to what people coming from film are used to and you'd loose less image printing as 4x6 compared to using 16:9 but either way you're going to loose a bit.

I'm glad someone mentioned this I noticed this the other day when I was going through the camera settings. I wonder why they didn't put it as default and give you the option to choose a lower resolution.
So if I leave it in 13mp 4:3 it will give the look of a old square/box tv? And if I switch it to 16:9 will give me the best wide-screen shot even in video?
