[Q] Car Mode, Task Manager, Flashlight - AT&T HTC One (M8)

Hello,
I've had my new phone for a few weeks. I love having an HTC again, but I seem to be missing some things. So, I have a few questions about my ATT HTC m8.
First is Car Mode. My last HTC had it, the internet seems to say I should have it, yet on my AT&T device I cannot seem to find it. It it there and I'm missing it? Is it on the AT&T model? If not is there an apk file I can get to add it?
Second is a task manager. I can close out recent tasks, but they remain open in the background. The older HTCs had a task manager. Am I missing it? I would rather not have to use a 3rd party app.
Last is a flashlight. Is there not one pre installed on this device?
Thanks for taking your time to respond!

There is a thread with the flashlight.apk over in the Themes and Apps section.

DriveMode is ATTs version. No built in task manager or flashlight that I'm aware of though.

Thanks for the help. After further research I did see that the ATT version does not have Car Mode.... SOO.... This is where I am a little more confused....
I installed a 3rd party car mode app. CarHome Ultra to be exact. The crazy thing is if I open the app, press tap to set, then go to applications Car Mode is there! The HTC version! After going back to my application manager and going to ALL I do see the car app(I looked before but must have missed it). It's not accessible without going through that 3rd party app to get there though.... Any ideas? Anyway to make it accessible without rooting my device?
I know it might be silly going though so much work, but I'd rather have stock applications.
By the way! Thanks for the flashlight apk and the other info!

HTC Car Mode is actually on the phone but AT&T has it hidden. (the Icon looks like a steering wheel) You can easily add a shortcut to it by using QuickShortcutMaker from the Play Store
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.sika524.android.quickshortcut
The app scans your phone and then lists all the apps on it. You then select the app you want and it will add a shortcut to tha app you one of your home screens. It won't add it to the app drawer but it is fully functional as a shortcut on your home screen. Hope this helped

I use this.
Just remember to run it again when you're done, or the next time you hit the home button carhome starts again.
Looks cool, but not the one I was looking for. I will keep it for now though.
The car dock app pops up automagically when the atrix is placed into the car dock. I know that's probably obvious, but if you don't use it, you can freeze it with titanium backup.

That's odd, I have a car dock and it does not pop up. How does the car dock you have plug in?
Its the oem one from moto. It plugs in from the bottom in landscape...

If you use launcher pro, you can make a shortcut to it from the activities section, or use super manager to make a shortcut for it.

Your car dock, if it is OEM, shoudl automatically open the car dock app. If it doesn't you might have a defective one and should either return it or contact motorola.
You can use "any cut" to make a shortcut to it.

I used the same app for a while. It causes the motorola car dock app to start when you hit home. You have to run it again so the home button works normally again.
Then I found the Google Care Home apk online and installed that. Now when I exit car mode it actually exits car mode. It also has a feature to start it automatically when it connects to a specific bluetooth device. So mine starts as soon as I get in the car, dock or no.
The trade-off, though, is that the motorola app is actually a little fancier and more polished than the google app. It includes a custom dialer for instance, while the google app uses the default dialer.

[Q] GBooks & car mount

1. I recently updated to 2.3.6. While on .4, I was able to rename the Google Books apk using ES File Manager and it removed the app. Now nothing will remove it. How do I get rid of it, short of installing a custom ROM? And yes, I am rooted.
2. I have the Samsung car mount. I used to have the Droid Charge, and had the Samsung car mount for that one as well. On the Charge, using the mount would turn the homescreen sideways. The SGSII mount doesn't. Any way to enable this?

Have you tried Titanium Backup? How come you haven't yet heard of it since December?

Do you use a custom Launcher? If so does your custom Launcher force the screen to stay in portrait. I don't own a dock but I never had any issue changing the homescreen to landscape mode on Go Launcher without a dock. To add more convenience.. you could probably use Llama to configure your phone the way you want when the dock is connected.

3. And lastly, someone mentioned setting the default Android car dock app to launch when the phone is docked. Where would I get this app from, and how would I set it to launch when docked instead of the Vlingo app?

Llama would be the answer to this again. There could be something better than Llama for the thing you want to do. But as I have never used dock, I can't say for sure.

1. Titanium backup as the previous user stated
2. Use a different launcher like launcher pro or go launcher, the built in touch wiz launcher does not support landscape mode (although it does support landscape lockscreen)
3. Uninstall the vlingo app with titanium backup and install a new version in the market (the installed one is ooollldd) You will find way more features like a widget that will help you. Not sure where the default setting is though.
Just as an extra note, I absolutely love putting my phone in portrait mode instead of landscape when driving. It lets you see more of whats coming up when using gps, notifications appear normally (instead of only 2 at a time when landscape, and GPS sensor aiding is more accurate.
TiBu doesn't work because GBooks doesn't show up in the list. Edit: Shows up in uninstalled apps in Market. I can't find the icon anymore. I guess the problem fixed itself.
Nope, running the stock launcher. It's weird that the Charge was able to rotate the homescreen. I'm guessing it has something to do with 2.3?
And the Vlingo app doesn't show up in TiBu either, unless it's under a different name.
Additional question: I remember there being a list of all the stock apps that show up in TiBu, saying whether each one could be uninstalled and what detrimental effects it would have. It might've been for the Charge, though. Does that exist for the SGS2?
It's been a while since I saw Google Books on my phone. It should be named just "Books" in app list in TB. Or just use search in TB.

Why are all these apps "running" on my s3?? HELP PLEASE.

Disclaimer: I'm a total smart phone noob who recently went from a cheapo tracfone to a Samsung Galaxy S3.
I seem to be getting really bad battery life and I just went into my app manager and clicked on the "running" and there's a big list of apps in there...all with timers running..including a couple games I dloaded. Why are they "running" and are they draining my battery? How do I shut them down? NOTE: When I play a game or use an app, to get out of it, I just hit the Home button. Is there a way I should exit from each app?
After hitting the home button, hold it down then a list of your recent apps will show up as thumbnails, slide them off the screen to close them.
And if you are finished with an app exit it with the back button, exiting it with the home button just keeps it in ram (multitasking)

Great! thanks didn't even know I could do that. Ok so I did that and swiped them all off the screen...then did it again and went into task manager and it said "Active Applications: 0"...ok awesome. However, then I went back intoSsettings ->Application Manager and "runnning" tab and there's still a big list in there:
Settings
Factory Mode
Software update
T-Mobile My Account
AllShare Play
MAPServiceSamsung
Bonus Apps
Google Services
Dropbox
Maps
Task Manager
Media Hub
MobileLife Contacts
Email
SecPhone
GBA service
S voice
Samsung Keyboard
Deep Sea (live Wallpaper)
now I obviously understand Settings, task manager and wall paper, but why are the rest "running"??

You are always going to have running apps and services, that's unavoidable.
Just clear the recent apps menu by swiping them away and forget about the rest.
If you are rooted you can use a root explorer to go to system/app directory and delete bloatware.

This is a computer, pal. And all of them run dozens of processes. Leave Android kill by itself those that are not needed anymore...

On your Windows PC (if you have Windows), press CTRL+Shift+ESC, then click on the processes tab of the window that shows up. For extra excitement, click on "show processes from all users". See all those apps running? You don't need to care about 98% of those. That's Windows doing its thing.
Loading up a task manager on Android results in a similar list. Most of that list is just Android doing its thing, including keeping apps cached in case you need to go back to them. In almost all cases, you don't need to do anything. Even if you exit an app by pressing the Home key, Android will just page it out of memory pretty quickly unless it's specifically designed to run in the background (or just poorly programmed).
Your best bet is just to ignore task management software as they tend to do more bad than good.
visit the thread "apps safe to remove" and delete or freeze all unwanted apps forever
sent from: designed for humans
Also remember to go into S Voice settings and turn off the wake ups etc
Then go follow the tread posted above and have Titanium backup or System Tuner Pro etc ready, to Freeze bloatware.
Also you use Kies? Can also remove or rename 'kiesexe' from system/bin.
Then enjoy! Went from 90-110M free ram to 220-320M now after loading all my widgets etc

Swiping them away in that menu clears them from memory.
All running apps/services are not shown in that menu.

Strange tasker behavior

I'm a tasker newb, my problem is that I do not have the option to load apps in the app action section of tasks in Tasker. I mean it is literally not there. I have the options for
Calendar Insert
Go Home
Kill App
Launch App
Test App
No Load App, and Load Last app is unavailable. Been playing around with Tasker for about two weeks and have installed it/uninstalled it. Still the same. I have made/used a few profiles but wanted to make the simple headphone plugin music player menu profile but I cant do it if I have no way of loading aps to a menu. Is there something I'm missing, doing wrong? Or does it simply not work with my phone, a rooted galaxy s4? Has anyone else had this experience? Is there a solution

If you want a singular app to load when your headset is plugged in, say Spotify for example you can use the launch app action and select Spotify. If you're wanting a selection of apps to pick from when you plug you're headset in, you're going to have to create a scene to do this. I suggest going over the pocketables tutorials or looking up the Tasker google group.

[SUGGESTION] One app only android setup? Kiosk Mode?

So I would like to restrict an android tablet to only one app and one app only.
I guess I need to customize a ROM to only be permitted to use only one app and not be able to install open anything else but the one app, would also be very nice if the app was actually the home screen. of course the other usual settings should be accessable, wifi, sound and similar, or if i could restrict those that would be nice also?
The tablet will be some cheap one.
What are my possibilities?
Any ideas, suggestions? Thanks.

Hi!
- You could make use of apps like one of these:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.promobitech.mobilock
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.gears42.surelock&hl=en
- If your tablet is running Android Lollipop then you can make use of Screen Pinning.
http://www.greenbot.com/article/2850373/lock-to-a-single-app-with-lollipop-s-screen-pinning.html
- You could also customize a ROM to suit your needs. You can enable root access and start deleting the system apps that you feel you won't need. For example, I think you can remove PackageInstaller.apk to prevent anyone from installing any apps (apk files).
- You can take a look at these pages:
http://stackoverflow.com/questions/24127947/lock-android-device-to-a-single-application
http://www.andreas-schrade.de/2015/02/16/android-tutorial-how-to-create-a-kiosk-mode-in-android/
- You can find a lot more info by just Googling "lock to one app android" or "kiosk mode android".
I hope you find my post helpful.
