[Q] Camera button not working properly? - Xperia Z2 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I was playing with the camera on my Z2 and noticed that the dedicated camera shutter button wasn't working. I press the button, it focuses, and the button on the side disappear as if it were about to take the picture, but it just stays that way until I release the button. When I release the button, no picture is taken and it unfocuses and the buttons come back.
My phone is bootloader unlocked, rooted, and I removed some things via Titanium Backup. Did I somehow remove a piece of software needed to use the button correctly?
Any help is appreciated.
Thanks.

Are you awear that it is a two stage button
Soft press for focus
Hard click for snap picture
When you focus the Overlay is removed for better view
You could use the onscreen buttons if this isnt the case
This could be a firmware or hardware issue
I need more details to conform
Random:
You can not remove of Firmware that manages the camera button however you can delete the camera
Unlocked bootloaders should have no affect on anything at all besides the usual bravia / x reality
Same goes for root

Hi,
I have same issue. Dont know it was like this on stock kernel/locked BL, sometimes it works, i think it is matter off delay.
D6503 Rooted, bootloader unlocked
FW .402, doomlord kernel v09
EDIT: on my case it was fault of Xposed Additions plugin

[Q] Annoying popping up of keyboard / menu on Viewpad7

Both the on-screen keyboard and the menu keep annoyingly popping up on my Viewpad7. It is driving me crazy.
At some point I thought it had to do with how I moved the device around, but I still think it's a random thing. It was/is a problem before and after loading it with a custom rom.
Is this a known hardware (or software?) bug ? If so, is there a cure for this? I have looked for settings, but was unable to find them. Thank.
SWVer=3.16K

HWVer:103
Android 2.2.2
Hi
Have the same problem and some other users here too.
Seems the Touchscreen/Softkeys are faulty and have to be replaced.
I bought mine 1 week ago and day by day it went worser. I didn't upload a custom rom so far, so it's a stock problem.
Now every 2nd time I take the device it vibrates and menu/keyboard keeps popping up/down. Looks like, the "menu" softkey does his own business, right?
Also the G-Sensor/Compass seems to be defective for me - after a few hours I have to calibrate always.
I made some videos, look at this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1258052
Where have you bought yours?
Regards
With my device it was when I held it in landscape mode and touched the bottom part of the right side or the rightmost part of the bottom of the device itself. It was also HWVer 103. You will most likely have to get the screen and soft keys replaced like I did.

Or, it could be just be a "normal" thing with Froyo OS itself, I've noticed it on 2 newer build - both ITE enabled - in U.S. market.
SWVer=3.41
MODEL=FM6-0001
HWVer:107
Android 2.2.2
This happened only on certain Apps - even when Auto Rotation under Settings are turned off, it will switch to the "opposing" mode and won't go back once it make that orientation change, i.e. YouTube whereas Angry Birds will stay landscape all the time. Device has been calibrated & sensors working, as I had no issues with GPS status & Maps, etc.
Should be a simple fix or patch on the OS or custom ROM .... BTW, I'm running the stock, rooted 2.2.2 ROM while waiting for an OC one with the ITE kernel working to boost the Quadrant scores, LOL.
Ours seems to be more a hardware problem since it happens anywhere, with autorotation on or off, after a complete hard reset (without any additional apps installed) and simply by touching the case itself (not the screen)...

Hmmm, interesting after I checked out a few YouTube videos & it sounded like it's all HWVer 103 yet running Froyo 2.2.2. Is the device ITE enabled as I noticed that the pop-up keyboard is "standard" whereas mine has Swype style keybaord with ITE.
It's a pain to get it returned, exchanged & repaired at the authorized factory service center and be without the use for 2+ weeks, unless one's within a 30 days period & can send it back to the place of purchase for a new one (could take just as long)
Another post mentioned a new stock ROM just being released, it might be worth an effort or try to flash it (FM6-3350-0-1008-A01.nb0) upon downloading & using the SUTL3 app to do it - would need to root it again - if one is brave enough (since it's going back for repair/exchange anyway?)
BUT, I'm guessing whether this newly released stock ROM is for ITE devices vs. non-ITE ones with HWVer 103, 106 and 107's ???
The button clicking by itself or when under vibration is an HW fault.
pulling the back off and wedging some paper near the touch IC to keep pressure on it has fixed mine.
Brought it back to the store for repair. I think they put a new screen and cover (back) on it. Works like a charm.

Can you describe more precisely how and what did you do or can you (better) do some photos?
Did you pulled off a back cover and inserted a piece of paper somewhere?
Need to experiment
Software solution
This is a solution from a user 'retrochip' from 4pda.ru forum
(Link to original post in Russian and i'm not able to post is here)
1. Root your device (can be done with Gingerbreak)
2. Find out codes for Menu button and Search button (229 and 217)
3. Edit configuration file /system/usr/keylayout/qwerty.kl (you can use RootExplorer)
In qwerty.kl:
Find text:
key 217 SEARCH WAKE_DROPPED
and change to:
key 217 MENU WAKE_DROPPED
Find text:
key 229 MENU WAKE_DROPPED
and change to (just comment it with #):
#key 229 MENU WAKE_DROPPED
Save and reboot.
Now Menu button isn't active and Search button works as a Menu button.
No annoying random popping keyboard anymore.
This has killed my all soft buttons, now the only option is to fix it in adb, because screen keyboard doesn't appear in terminal, I need to touch menu then screen keyboard.

Amaze wakes up when you tap camera / video camera button, how to turn off?

Hi Guys,
Title says it all. When the Amaze is asleep and I tap either camera button, the phone will wake up to the lock screen, which is really annoying because the case I have makes it very easy to accidentally tap the camera/video camera buttons. Is there anyway to disable this functionality so the phone will only wake up when the power button is pressed?
I still want to maintain the long-perss to camera functinoality of the buttons, of course.
Thanks everyone!

There is no way to change it if you are not rooted. If you have rooted your phone or have any custom rom use Root Explorer to do the following:
Go to system/usr/keylayout folder
Mount it as R/W
Open ruby-keypad.kl file in text editor.
Change the following 2 lines and delete the WAKE.
Code:
key 248 CAMCORDER WAKE
key 212 CAMERA WAKE
Save the file and reboot.
Awesome, thanks for the info. Cheers
Hi i have a similar, but different question - how do I make it so that long-pressing camera button, will launch Camera App, even if phone is locked with pattern / password??
I bought Amaze because of camera, and I often need to take a picture quick and unlocking the phone each time is a pain in the @SS ... especially if I need to take a pick once every minute
Thanks

Take off the lock, if they made it capable of doing that then basically anyone could steal your phone and get off with your info since there is no lock what so ever.

@ Dark Nightmare
You are wrong about disabling lock and everyone being able to steal ur info. And no - I will not disable lock - I have too much precious info on my phone.
1) this works perfectly on Energy Rom (only Energy Rom is buggy).
2) I did as instructed here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=28194573&postcount=8
And it works - Camera key launches Camera APP ... and if I try to get into the phone - it shows lock screen / pattern - does not unlock the phone!
^ also works on PB/SpeedRom6

[Q] ARHD 2.2 --> Shutter button doesn't launch straight into camera

Anyone else having this issue? After the upgrade to ICS (Android Revolution 2.2), the dedicated camera shutter button will turn the phone's screen on to the lock screen, but not launch directly into the camera.
Not sure if this is an ICS thing, or an ARHD thing...
Thanks,
Massiv.

Would love to .... this 10 post thing is a lesson in pure frustration for me since I've had a Hero, Desire, Desire HD, and an Amaze, all of them rooted and upgraded with various ROMs, as well as having beta tested Mike's ARHD 2.1 for him [nuking my internal SD in the process].... yet I still don't have 10 posts and thus am prevented from posting a list of potential issues where it matters.
Writing this helped though!!
Massiv.
i also noticed this.
the camera button for me sometimes goes to lock screen, and if i press it again or hold it long enough it would eventually get to the camera.
the positive thing that happened after ICS upgrade is that if you have a lock screen password, it goes to camera without asking for the password, whereas in GB it always asked for the password before opening camera app, making it impossible to take fast shots.
lets hope either tmobile or the devs will work on this
Please keep all question based threads in the Q&A section. Thanks.

You don't have to be a farmer to know what sh*t smells like.
I have same problem in ARHD 3.0 - it works on Energy rom, but that rom is unstable (for me) ...
So - how do we get camera button to launch camera app when phone is locked? I really need this feature to work - please help if you know solution.
Thanks
same problem here as well
I made a quick fix. You'll need to mount your system directory as writable first, then browse to /system/usr/keylayout folder.
Then open Generic.kl file with a text editor and scroll down to key 212 (or the one that says CAMERA) and tab it (or space it) a couple of times and then add "WAKE" without quotes.
Like this:
Code:
# key 211 "KEY_HP"
[COLOR="Red"]key 212 CAMERA WAKE[/COLOR]
key 213 MUSIC
Save the file
After that, open ruby-keypad.kl file and scroll down to key 211 (or FOCUS) and tab it (or space it) a couple of times and then add "WAKE_DROPPED" without quotes.
Like this:
Code:
# CAMERA
[COLOR="red"]key 211 FOCUS WAKE_DROPPED[/COLOR]
key 212 CAMERA WAKE
Save the file again
When you're done, reboot the phone and test it out.
Note: This will make your shutter button launch straight into camera, but it makes it more sensitive. Half of a press of the shutter button will wake it up. So if you have a case or something that frequently presses the shutter button, it's recommended that you do not do this. If you don't like the changes, just undo the instructions.

[Q] Dedicated camera button

Two things about the Evo LTE dedicated camera button.
1. When the phone is locked should this turn the camera on after a few seconds? I cannot get mine to do it.
2. I was using the camera in the dark with Auto Flash on and the flash did not flash when using the dedicated camera button. If I use the soft button on the screen it would work.
Any thoughts on either of these two items would be appreciated.

your first point is as designed the second point is probably a software bug
I noticed this problem too, and I just got the phone yesterday. I found that if you press the camera button quickly all the way that it will flash. It just doesn't flash if you do the half press first.
My auto flash works with fast full or half to full press from hardware button. However, I cannot get the camera button to launch the camera from the lock screen. I could have sworn that I saw review vids showing this feature.

are you sure they weren't just pulling the camera shortcut into the unlock ring?
I cant say Ive heard of the camera button waking the phone. I know if you have it unlocked you can hold the button down and the camera will turn on no matter what screen you are on.
I sure hope there's some software updates coming soon, mainly to address memory management issues with Sense 4, but I would also love a more functional hardware camera button. I may just be ranting, but it honestly sucks. It's a 2-step button, but the first step doesn't do anything. I would love it to auto-focus at least, and properly control the flash would be amazing as well. The camera UI could use some tweaks also. The camera has a very powerful auto-focus, but a cross-hair type box wouldn't hurt so that we have a better idea of what exactly is being focused. Also, how about some AF metering settings? Taking a portrait of something when there's lots of light in the background will create a very dark, underexposed picture (of the primary target).
I think the camera is very powerful, and would love to see HTC make the software just as powerful... or at the very least fix the things that are broken.

[Q] Issues with xperia sola

hello to everyone,
i recently bought an xperia sola and i am very happy with that. After some days usage i discover some issues with my phone and i believe you can help me.
First of all the camera doesn't work with the camera button and to be more specific when i push the camera button does nothing and if i get into the camera app and push the button again i cant get any picture. So i changed the settings of the camera app and now i can take pictures by touching the screen.
whats wrong with the button? Is that a hardware problem or is software?
Also when i make some phone calls the picture of my friends those i choosed to appear when they call me some times are full screen but the most of the time are too small. The pics i choosed are taken from my phone camera.
Do you know anything about this?
Thank you very much and sorry for my bad english

i dunno abt the pic problem
for the hard camera button, u have to dig it in reeeeal deep for it to take a pic
(which by the way causes ur hand to shake so unclear pic--better continue to use onscreen button
It took me over a week to realise that the camera button has two positions (like the shutter button on most digital cameras). I first thought the camera was very buggy or that I had set it to some mode where it wouldn't take a picture unless focus was good or something like that.
So, just make sure you press it all the way down.
As for the pictures I have no idea, I never make calls (I'm deaf).
thank you guys for the answers
