Droid Razr/ Black Screen/ Replacement Phone - Motorola Droid RAZR

I have a Droid Razr Maxx on Verizon. Rooted ICS Stock with Clockwork Mod. On Friday the screen went black and seemed near death. I called Verizon, they were unable to troubleshoot it so they sent me out a Fed Ex "Refurbished" double of my phone. Later that afternoon like Lazarus my phone revived. I called Verizon and said the problem seemed to have resolved itself. They said no problem. They said they would cancel the shipment.
But the next day, the Fed Ex guy arrived with the replacement phone. My phone works normally, then poops out. It seems to be a software issue. I figure I can either use one of those tools to remove root, wipe data, get rid of Bootstrap (or Clockwork Mod, I forget which I'm running right now) and revert my old phone to a virgin state, and send it back to Verizon, or I can try to resolve the issue with my current phone.
My question is - what might be causing it?
And if I cannot salvage the current phone I know there is a tool that reverts Droid Razr back to total out of box virginity so a rooted phone is not going back to big red. I can't find it though. Help in either direction is appreciated.
Oh, and final question. If I am going to be restarting from zero, which it looks like I am, does anyone know if there is a stable KitKat Rom yet for Razr OG/OG Maxx? Thanks.

Use Matt's utility to revert Droid RAZR Maxx (xt912) back to stock firmware: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2192467
You could try this on your old phone to see if it resolves the problem. If this doesn't fix your phone then send it back. If it does fix your problem then install a recovery system and ROMs of your choice (or install recovery and ROMs on the refurbished phone).
You can use the utility to root the phone (you may want to accept the Verizon OTA update first). Then you could install Safestrap 3.72 recovery system (don't use the utility to install Safestrap since it installs an older version that doesn't work with newer ROMs).
Now you can flash a new ROM or ROMs of your choice. I'm currently running CyanogenMod 11 (Kit Kat 4.4.2). It is still in development so it is receiving nightly updates (some better than others), but generally works pretty well now. The 4/27 nightly seems good, but I've only been running it for a few hours. I also use the Paranoid Android GApps (version 4/26a full modular pkg).

Safestrap is the program that "installs" the CWM recovery, that is how you get it. Well this assumes you have the Verizon XT912 version of the RAZR/RAZR MAXX
If you need it for flashing specific ROM's see which version of it is required for that ROM and use that version.
As daniel explained, which one you use depends on which ROM you plan on flashing. I know that Eclipse for the RAZR does not work with Safestrap. You MUST use bootstrap in order for the Eclipse ROM to work. I don't know what other ROMs Safestrap works with as I've only used Eclipse.
Safestrap is nice because it ALWAYS loads upon rebooting, giving you the choice of launching into Safestrap recovery or let it boot normall. So if you somehow bricked your phone but can still boot it, you have the option of getting into Safestrap to fix the problem.
Bootstrap only launches itself after you run it from the phone and reboot it, so if you've bricked your phone where you cannot boot back into the desktop, you're screwed.
Ive got ics bootstrap installed now and flashed a mod so that when phone reboots it automatically goes to cwm. Im new to all this. Id like to try an ics rom. Rigjt now im just stock rooted. Any suggestions

Well, I do know that Scott (nitroglycerin) is working on an ICS edition of Eclipse. He definitely states to stay away from anything other than release 79, I guess so I can go back to GB since that's what the current RAZR Eclipse is based off of.
Sounds like a lot of people are liking the latest leak, release 211 but I think I'll hold off until possibly Scott releases ICS Eclipse. I love Eclipse on my RAZR too much to move away from it right now.
Should i be alrigjt flashong eclipse with my current setup. It doesnt ask to boot normal or recovery when turning on it just boots cwm. It was a mod i flashed

ICS Eclipse isn't out right now. Only a Gingerbread edition is available.
I'm not familiar with ICS bootstrap, but I do know that Eclipse wants the normal bootstrap recovery to be used. I don't know what ICS bootstrap is, but I do know that Safestrap will NOT play nicely with Eclipse because of how it partitions things.
As long as you are on GB, you should be fine with Eclipse. I like it. It's really stable and fast. Makes the RAZR scream if you ask me.

[Q] Do I have a brick?

Please I need answers to this issue, not people blaming me for being such a noob. I reprogrammed a Verizon Droid Razr for my colleague here in Nigeria, we both work for a CDMA network. The phone was fine, voice, text and data working until yesterday he told me the phone lost network. I asked him what happened before then and he told me he did an update (the ICS update), so everything went back to Verizon defaults and I needed to reprogram again. I got to reprogram it today but there was no data so I figured I would go back to GB 6.12.181 which the phone was on before the update. I chose DroidRAZR Utility 1.6 which I have on my laptop to do the job. After this my woes began. The phone now stops at the Motorola logo and after that goes blank. I tried again but it was the same response, and I discovered that the recovery changed too, and where I should hit both volume buttons to get the option to wipe all I see is automatic update inside recovery. I tried to remove the sdcard, but I guess the update file he received is in the internal storage. How can I get the phone working again, whether on ICS or GB, whichever would work. Or do we have a total brick? Please I need urgent answers. Thank you all.
Pls people, Help Me!
After Upgrading to ICS you CANNOT downgrade back to 2.3 again, part of ICS does NOT allow downgrading, if its CDMA and you can get to bootstrap you could flash the ROM again, use the sdcard in another device to copy the rom, but it MUST be ICS you CANNOT install GB anymore

Thanks for your reply lashton. Please can you point me to a guide on how I can restore the phone to ICS. It is stuck on Invalid Flash Mode now and the battery is low, but I want to make a factory cable to use tomorrow and see if I can get the phone working again. I just need to know this is possible to restore to ICS.
Thanks.
What you have is soft brick. And yes you will be able to go back to ics but now gingerbread. Look online there are plenty of people that have soft bricked their phones thinking they could just go back to GB. Lol including me. Happy digging! =)

Please dear sir Chuckleb0ne, kindly guide me on how to do this since you have experienced it before. I have only till tomorrow to get this working as the phone has my friend's official company line on it, he must be able to use it for calls tomorrow. Down on my knees, tears streaming down my eyes... pleading for help...
OK. I managed to construct a factory cable and it supplied power to the phone, so far so good. I tried to use Droid Utility 1.7 to unbrick (option 2) but it didn't work, I mean the fastboot flash went through but I still cannot go further than the Invalid Flash Mode screen, no matter what. I can't even go into recovery. That's a major issue, I think. If I could get into recovery I could sideload the ICS zip I copied on the sdcard with the Utility tool. I next tried option 1, which is Prepare for sideloading ICS on any GB. It didn't work either. Please people, what next before I go crazy. We do not have Verizon here so their support is out of the question, or even returning the phone. I must fix this, with your help, because I have run out of ideas here. Help needed!
Try to boot through BP Tools. The phone must be unplugged. If you can reboot that way then just rewrite the boot .img, I want to say its option 9? Kinda sounds like what happened with my phone, but after I saw the dead android with the door open I believe I could still get into stock recovery and side load .211.
Guys, I got it back on. I used DroidRazr Utility 1.6, 1.7 and this file - Blur_Version.6.12.181.XT912.Verizon.en.US.zip, all three in combination. the blur file on my sdcard, fastboot restore to 181 with Utility 1.6, move into recovery, wipe data and cache, fastboot 211 boot.img from Utility 1.7, back to recovery, flash the blur file on sdcard... ladies and gentlemen, we have a working Droid RAZR on ICS 211. Happy mode activated...
Nice job ezeuba! I'm trying to find a way to get my RAZR back to GB because I HATE ICS. I've been using it for 2 days and I want to smash my phone. I keep finding people saying that it is not possible, although I have found 1 or 2 references stating that it may be possible but is very risky. I am willing to take any risk at this point as my phone is pretty much useless to me now anyway and it is at very high risk of being utterly destroyed. It amazes me how fast you can go from love to hate with a device. This fiasco reminds me of the day I "upgraded" from Windows XP to Vista. At least Microsoft left me the option to go back...
Question: When you did "fastboot restore to 181 with Utility 1.6", were you back to a working GB 181? Were you forced to move "up" to ICS or was it your choice? Thanks in advance for any information!
See! Once you do a little digging you come up with a solution. And now you probably feel incredible for doing it yourself.

To answer your question first, no I didn't have a choice to stay on Gb or move up to ICS. I only did fastboot to 181 with Utility 1.6 in order for the phone to even boot up to recovery. Prior to that I only had "Invalid Flash Mode" error, no recovery, nothing. So, after fastbooting 181 I got to recovery, wiped data and cache, went back to Utility, 1.7 this time, and flashed boot.img for 211, then went back into recovery and sideloaded the downloaded 211 update file on my sdcard. After that could I get full boot to ICS on the phone. No need dreaming of reverting back to GB, it's not possible, at least for now with a locked bootloader.

You are right. Nothing a bit of research would not solve, if you are really determined to get it to work. It was your assurance that it was certain to work that fired me up. I was afraid the phone was dead and about to be buried.
Thanks.
Thanks ezeuba! Fortunately ICS is starting to grow on me. I was able to load the old Gmail app which was my main issue and find some other workarounds for various other issues.

[Q] Question about Rooting

I have a Droid Razr Maxx and I rooted my phone last night using the Droid Razr Utility to try and install JB on my phone. Couldn't get JB installed correctly with working data, so I decided to un-root and revert back to stock ICS. My question is, does this simply revert my phone back to the ICS build I had on the phone prior to rooting, or is this essentially a clean install using a different build. I only ask because when I updated to ICS, I decided to do it manually instead of waiting for my OTA upgrade, and ever since then I've had nothing but issues with it. One of my biggest problems is the terrible battery life. I'm already seeing a 10% in battery life after only a half hour of use, so I'm assuming it reverted back to my original ICS build. Anyone know the answer?
Well how did you revert? With the utility as well? If that's the case it put you on stock .211 I believe. Which would be a clean install

[Q] JB and Custom Recovery Fail?!?!

Hey all!
I've been struggling with this issue for almost 2 weeks now, I used the Droid Razr Utility by MattLGroff to upgrade from GB -> JB without realizing that there was supposed to be an intermediate step of going from GB -> ICS. So the result of the upgrade has left my display acting all crazy where about a 1/3 of the screen is all garbled, looks like it's displaying noise like an old TV (see attached picture).
I'm able to get root and I install Safestrap 3.11 but when I boot the phone I can't get SS to appear. There is a pause in the boot process as if SS is there waiting for input but nothing I do gets it to boot. I also tried BootMenueManager where I select reboot into recovery and all I get is a black screen where the recovery screen should appear. I've tried re-flashing with the utility about 5 times without any change
So my question is simple, does anyone have any ideas as to what i can do to fix this?
Why can't I flash back to GB or go to ICS? All i've read is that it's not possible and haven't really come across any real reason why it doesn't work.
I appreciate any help you can provide!
Thanks!
You can't go back from Ics to Gb same as from Jb to Ics.
And you can't have Bmm and Safestrap at the same time, just one.
Did you tried flashing the rom with Rsd Lite?

Just saying that you can't go back to a previous version doesn't tell me the why aspect though. It's missing from a lot of the information out there.
When you say installed on the phone can you clarify? I have SS app installed but the recovery is not installed, i went and used SS's uninstall function but is that enough or do I actually have to remove the entire app? I'm not sure if this makes sense so let me know if i need to clarify.
I haven't tried RSDlite let since there are several other backup steps the lead up to do that from what I've been reading, I just haven't had the time yet. I assume it shouldn't be to hard to find the fastboot files for an XT912 Verizon JB but if you happen to have a known source for the files let me know!
Thanks!

Help with full reset of Razr

My wife and I both have original Droid Razrs (XT912). We just switched to T-mobile (with new phones) and she was reading about switching phones and she read where you should do a full factory reset to clear personal data...and, she did.
The problem is, I had her phone rooted and have Safestrap installed. So, now we have a phone that is not rooted, but still has Safestrap installed.
The good things are that it is no longer a daily driver and the phone still works fine.
My question: since the phone is no longer rooted (tried VooDoo...no dice...backup was gone), is there a good way to do a full restore of the phone to factory and remove Safestrap, so the phone is back to full factory?
I am including a screenshot of the phone information.
Thanks.
My stock rom on my razr shows I lost root back in Nov but I have cm 10 on rom slot 2 and the root checker app shows full root access but I cant install updates so im interested in a restore also, the droid razr utility was my go to for these issues but ive moved to a new device so im not sure if there is an update

Use Matt's utility. Find it in the Dev section. You can flash stock JB 4.1.2 with it. It will revert your phone to stock.
