If you aren't going to use it at all and your device came preloaded with Gmail, then you can disable it in your Application Manager in Settings. It'll be in the All tab. If you are rooted, you can freeze it or remove it with various apps as well. I'm not sure of a way to sign out of Gmail but keep signed into everything else like the Play Store.

[Q] Can you reinstall apps from google play?

Recently my Samsung Galaxy Mini went into a boot loop. To solve this, I had to factory reset the phone, deleting all my apps. When I log onto google play, and navigate to my previous apps, it says they are still installed, and won't let me reinstall them. Is there any way round this?
Thanks
how about the backup?did you always backup app?
if not,i think you can redownload using another website like appbrain...after that you can automatic update from google play..this is just my thought
Also you can enter to Play Store from your PC, and install all the apps that you need (clicking on the Install button, the app will be installed in your phone).
my android apps
go to Google play and my android apps on right hand side or hit this link https://play.google.com/apps
it will show you all the apps that u have installed on your phone, now click on app one by one and click on install button through web, in this way you can install the apps that u have loose
please press thank you button if u like this.
The thing is, when I go to "my apps", it says I already have them installed, when I don't. The install button is greyed out.

I had the same problem. The solution is simple however. I'm using Cyanogenmod for my rom. It turns out you have to download and install the google play apk.
As soon as I rebooted, I was asked for my Google account and once I entered the information, everything, including my apps, automatically downloaded and installed. Of course, it's important to note that I backed up my account to my Google account. I highly recommend this.
So, I think if you just find the gapp.apk for your rom, you'll be ok.
Hope that helps,

[Q] Play Store stopped working

All of a sudden Google Play Store stopped working. When I try to start it up, I get a screen "Authentication is required. You need to sign into your Google Account." and a [Retry] button. When I press the button, I get the same screen again.
I've checked that there's no firewall, my Google Account is working (checked from the PC), I've cleaned the Play Store data, all to no avail. I tried removing the account but that is not allowed, I need to do a factory reset for that -- something that I'm not particularly looking forward to.
Any idea what is going wrong and how I can recover?

When I try this, it asks for confirmation, I press 'Remove account' and then comes a dialog similar to "this account is required by some applications, you can only remove it by resetting the phone to factory defaults (...)".

im not sure if u can, but if u installed the market using the froyo gapps installer in a thread from here you should be able to go to settings->applications->manage apps and find play store and click on it and downgrade, a button where uninstall would normally be, also u could tell me ur device and android version and where u installed gpps from, thatd really help me at helping you out

My button reads [Uninstall updates]. After doing so, I get the old Market application again. However, when I start it, I get "Error: Authentication required. Please log into your Google account."
I tried uninstall Market and restore (from TitanumBackup) - no difference.

Archos 10.1IT running UrukDroid 1.6.4 (Based on stock archos Froyo 2.2)
Actually, I have the feeling that Market (and Play) try to start some authentication service, that fails or is missing.

hmm............try using the program u used to install market again, but first try after uninstalling updates to clear cache and data for google services framework and market, and also try to force stop them, otherwise try to reuse the app u used to install market
I removed the google apps and reinstalled them (several times, several ways). Finally success after reinstall using ArcTools. Now I can start Google Play. I asks me to create an account and it seems to work again.
Thanks for the assistance!
Again, I lost Google Play. Same symptoms: it says I need to sign in or create an account first, but doesn't give me the opportunity to do so.
I removed everything Google related. Re-installed Market (using ArcTools) but Market just doesn't get installed. Similar when trying to install Play using ArcTools: all tools get installed but there's no Play.
When restoring Market or Play from backup I have the same problems decribed in the beginning of the message.
Really puzzling - and frustrating.

[Q] Can't access Google play

I own a MI-BOOK MI3 tab. I'm able to surf the internet using browser but, couldn't login into gtalk app, youtube app, googleplay app, can't signin or sync the device with google and, I tried factory reset couple of time changed modem settings, reset modem settings no chance whatsoever and also login with another gmail account which was created for this purpose. Also when I login into play.google.com browser it shows all the apps that or wiped after factory reset as "INSTALLED". What do I do? Also how can I upgrade to Android 4.2 Jelly Bean? I followed your tutorial and gained root access to my tab. Using this post I did so [[[ forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1994711 ]]].
Please help me out.
Also if I factory reset again will the root feature enable will be gone? Do I have to root again after one more factory reset if done? What about Android 4.2 Jelly Bean upgrade? Can I root again using same method if I get it to upgrade? Can I change the play.google.com settings showing apps as installed even though they were lost after factory reset? If I upgrade to Android 4.2 Jelly Bean and do another factory reset will it reset to new installed Android 4.2 Jelly Bean or will it go back to earlier version of Android? What will happen to apps that came with tab by default? Will the apps that came with the tab be lost after upgrade?

[Q] How to keep ATT/HTC apps from re-installing after installing GPe custom ROM

I just unlocked and rooted my device to install a Google Play Edition ROM. The ROM installed fine and it is great, but after the ROM was installed and booting the phone, the Google Play Store re-installs all of the HTC/ATT applications when re-installing all the applications I had installed on the phone. Is there a way to prevent this? This was the main reason I went to a GPe ROM so I wouldn't have all the bloatware from ATT/HTC. Is this possible or do I have to just go through and uninstall them all? I did a factory reset in TWRP before installing the ROM.

Did you use the "restore account" function when you were setting up your phone? Or whatever the restore function is. Perhaps Un-check that box, so you can decide in the play store which to install.
Yeah, if you like changing roms all the time it's annoying, but uncheck the back/restore apps and settings option when you sign into your Google account

Whenever you switch from a GPe ROM to a stock ROM it'll happen if you back up your apps and restore upon setup. I find it's easier to allow the google restore to take place; go into your accounts apps in the Play Store and click the x on each app you don't want backed up anymore (it'll ask if you want to remove it from your account, say yes). The next time you restore a GPe ROM (as an update, or a clean install for whatever reason) you won't get the extra apps installed by default. The next time you switch to a stock ROM, they won't autodownload, but you'll have to remove them from your account after setting up the stock ROM.
If you use a stock ROM that doesn't have the bloatware, this isn't even an issue.

Anyway to unroot without wiping data

My banking app requires me not be rooted and I'm a stock bootloader locked, rooted phone, can I unroot by changing some files or something? Not sure how my banking app knows I'm rooted
Thanks for any help
Si
Try root cloak in xposed see if that works, you can unroot via the su app if it doesn't work
Good call on root cloak but it's not working for hbos.
I did the remove root option in supersu but that didn't remove root..am I missing something?

Did you uninstall supersu aswell?
supersu uninstalled when I ran the option to remove root
I know I'm still rooted as I've got a root checker from the playstore.
I believe you can just flash a stock firmware and ensure that you uncheck the option to wipe data during the process.

Thanks for that, did a full back up this morning ( using the handy sony supplued backup and restore app ) then did a flash unticking the 3 wipe options ( appcache, syslog & data I think ), flash went well and when the came back up it did the android optomising your apps thiny like an uipdate had occured but most importantly all my data was good. I did see a contact crash of acore process which a quick google search identified as needing to clear the cache of contacts then I thought I was home free....but then I saw a pop up for a Sony OS update which I did and after the reboot I'm now getting Exchange services have stopped and Mail has stopped. I've removed my exchange account and cleared Cache and Data for mail, exchange services, calander, contacts and few more but I still get the Exchange error when I try to add my exchange account back in or open mail....any ideas ?
On the plus side, my HBOS now works like a dream
Thanks guys

I can only think of clearing the cache and data for Email, Enterprise Services and Exchange Services apps. You might also want to check under Settings -> Accounts and delete any email accounts you've set up there. Sorry I can't be of much help here.
No need to appologise, any help is apprecidated.
Spent 20mins at lunch going through the app list doing the following
Forcing Close, removing Database
Did for Calenders, Contacts, Mail, Exchange etc and obvioulsy hit the right one as it's not all working
Managed to add my email account back and my HBOS is now working
Happy days
Si
