GPS only works with graphics off - AT&T Samsung Galaxy Note I717

Alright, this one has had me scratching my head for weeks while attempting to play Ingress.
GPS will give me a full lock... If the screen is off or no graphics (assuming OpenGL) are in use on screen. The first screenshot is typical. Good signal, zero locks. The second is immediately after leaving a menu in the app. Back to zero locks just seconds later.
ALL ROMs attempted and all radios work the same. I've ran multiple GPS fix apps, wiped, updated AGPS... I'm at a complete loss. I've had 1 good day of playing Ingress, and then I dropped my phone hard enough to cause restart and I'm back to this.

Ditto. It has nailed me within 3 feet while zoomed all the way in on the map. As I move around my yard it moves almost instantly.
Used a few times in Chicago today, near O'Hare airport which is known for **** signal. Worked perfectly.
Locks on quicker than my ogEVO.

If by accurate you mean reading you as 3 streets over...
not sure
I use mine with a running app Runkeeper. It was very good the first 2 times I used it showing 3.08 miles for a actual 3.1 mile distance. But yesterday is showed 5.37 miles for the same 3.1 route.
I hope it was just a glitch which happens depending on clouds but yesterday was clear.
meh
Meh, it gets poor signal indoors. Outdoors, it's often off. To truly test the GPS, you need to disable WIFI, otherwise it will use the BSSID's of nearby wifi hotspots to show your location...
I noticed that on the OG Evo in Maps (Maps, not Navigate), it would usually snap-to-street while i was driving. Now it doesnt seem to, i could be doing 50 down a side street and the map shows me driving through people's back yards on that street...
I use mine for logging runs and workouts. I wasn't too impressed yesterday when Cardio Trainer logged only half of my run.
NS4G didn't do that, lol. You could see where it would pickup and drop some sort of signal, and it repeated it numerous times while walking.
Running, it seemed to hold signal decently.
::EDIT::
Went running and I think its a CardioTrainer issue, not GPS. The GPS is constantly updating it seems like, just with CT I had a setting (auto pause after 5 seconds of no running) and I don't know if because of picking up and dropping satellites or what, but it was in and out of that mode.
Disabled that option (no big deal to me if it doesn't auto pause), and had a CONSTANT lock for the rest of the run after I did so.
I can get a cold lock inside within 10secs. Outside cold lock almost instantaneous. Gps rocks in this device.
Sent from my 3rd Dimension of Evolution
It's really good and accurate. But, I never really use it so I can save some battery life.
I've been blown away on it. Google Maps on my Palm Pre used to take over a minute to load, and in some cases wouldn't load at all. After it did, it wouldn't aquire a GPS signal. On the 3vo on the other hand, maps opens up within seconds and it also aquires a GPS signal right away. The arrow even moves around depending where the phone is pointed. Can't say I have any complaints. My favorite feature is being able to stream pandora music and telenav at the same time, and it actually fades out the music while GPS kicks in.
I've been having all sorts of trouble with GPS locks. It'll lock on fine to start, but within a few minutes of driving I'll get GPS signal lost and it'll take a long time to re-acquire. I wonder why. I may have to consider taking it for a repair/replacement if I'm the only one seeing issues. It reminds me a lot of how my 4G acted when I was using an earlier CM7 build so I attempted the ##GPSCLRX#, but that didn't seem to solve anything.

I drove from Buffalo, NY to Summerville, SC and back last week (900+ miles) and my GPS was spot on the entire time. While in SC I used it to get everywhere and it was perfect.
Mine grabbed me within 5 meters. Spot On.
I used Cardio Trainer also and it was very inaccurate. I watched the signal jump all over the place, it was terrible. I took it back to Sprint and they reluctantly swapped it out. I haven't tested it yet. Others, please test walking or running. I will be taking it back and going back to my EVO 4G if it is not fixed. My EVO 4G worked flawlessly.
you can only test something like gps when your driving and have time to set it up, wait for lock, yadda yadda yadda...
on the three occasions that i have used it it consistantly dropped signal and was a PITA. as for gps... I prefer the 4g not the 3d
Strange...

My GPS has been working flawlessly since purchase. I play golf and use the Golf Card app and was very happy with the accurate results. However, today....the GPS was acting wacky. It was jumping all over as described above. I reset the GPS and that didn't fix it. After playing around with the phone for awhile, I finally got it to work as normal. Keeping an eye on this in case I need to get rid of this phone.
My GPS has been about as temperamental as the OG Evo on CM7. It sometimes has trouble locking and often is fairly inaccurate (it seems to work better in Google maps than other apps). The OG Evo on sense was definitely better IMO.

The GPS is very inaccurate and jumps around constantly on Runkeeper. For example, see these runs:
http://runkeeper.com/user/rcrockett/activity/41894800
http://runkeeper.com/user/rcrockett/activity/41487967
Zoom in and you can see how it's jumping around all over the place. It makes it seem as though I am running faster and a longer distance. The first link is a 10k, but it reported it as 7.15 miles. I thought was kicking butt!
I have not taken any OTAs. I hope this is fixed sometime soon. I wonder why this hasn't been reported more.

I am using CM7 and my gps takes a long time to lock. Anyone has similar experience?

Yeah, gps can sometimes take ages to get lock, I have waited for up to 5 mins for lock, this is not limited to any type of rom, I have used stock eclair, stock froyo, rooted eclair and the others in my sig....
If you have mobile internet and network location turned on, i notice it does help to get lock quicker, I think that has something to to with AGPS data loading. Also if you don't use gps regularly the location data becomes out of date, I'm pretty sure there is an expiry on the life on the data, so for example if you use gps regularly daily or a few times a week it seams to lock much quicker....
On another note, I have one of those silicone rubber covers on my phone, when using the "gps test" app (from market) for example I get quite a significant signal increase when I take the cover off, so if you have a cover, try taking it off and see if it helps you...

HELP - Bootloop

Alright, so this phone is becoming extremely frustrating.
The very first day i got the rezound I had it for literally five hours right from the store and I figured i would restart it to freshen things up after messing around with setting up my home screens.
Upon my phone turning back on, it booted up to the lockscreen... froze... turned itself on and then restarted itself and it LOOPS... it does NOT get past this point it bootloops the process
So I pulled the battery a few times, then did a factory reset in hboot and the problem fixed itself, so I gave it the benefit of the doubt and thought maybe it was just a fluke so i reset everything back up... now three days later... I restarted the phone... upon turning it back on... SAME THING... BOOTLOOPING for no reason
I have never tried to temp root my phone or do anything whatsoever. This is a 100% legit phone but its becoming extremely annoying. Im returning this thing to VZW tonight and exchanging it for another one but im torn between exchanging it for a different rezound or just straight up returning it and waiting for the nexus december 8th to come out.
There have been ALOT of reported problems with this phone from my bootlooping... dead pixels... horrible battery life... etc
Dont reboot it anymore. There is an app in the market called fast reboot.when you need to freshen the phone just push the icon and it wiill get all the free memory in about 10-15 seconds.
Sent from my Galaxy Tab 10.1
im supose to be locked into a phone for the next 2 years that i cant reboot because it bootloops?
I have seen several people with boot-looping issues.
I'm not one of them and I don't think it is rampant with this phone. As for dead pixels and horrible battery life - those issues are even fewer and far between.
I wouldn't say there have been ALOT; probably a normal percentage of definite defective units mixed with people being unfamiliar with "how things work" on a phone like this.
..... my $.02
yeah im returning it at VZW tonight for a new unit... if the second one has any issues at all that have been described on this forum so sorry i gave them two chances... returning and waiting for nexus
You also gotta realize your hearing about a ton of issues with the phone, because only people with issues are posting about it. The other 90% that dont have issues arent posting.
Anytime a new phone comes out about 10% of them are duds with the same problems you are describing. When the nexus comes out their forum will be full of threads about problems with that phone. Read thru the android forums and no matter what the phone, you will see complaints about the phone. i have been reading them for years.

I had the phone for about 7 hours three have been fighting loops. My temporary solution is to disable LTE and put my standard size battery in the device ? I don't know why, but I have a hunch that my specific device may be verry sensitive to heat issues.
I called Verizon and they show the boot cycling a known issue and that it was submitted to HTC.
The phone does not seem overly hot to Me so my hunch could be wrong

Bootloops = Heat
In my experience, Bootloops are a result of heat. The phone heats up (or the radio heats up), the phone reboots on the thermal warning, but the bootup time is not nearly long enough to cool down a phone that hot, so once the OS (or kernel) loads to the point where it starts checking for thermals, it sees a heat issue, and reboots.
I have this on my DInc which I was hoping to replace with a Rezound because of these bootloops, but of course I am going to have sit and see if this subsides (or what the Nexus people say) because ...
... you are right, you do NOT want a phone for 2 years which bootloops when you use it for 15 minutes. It is hell.
What is causing all the heat on your phone ??

I asked and called Verizon again. I found someone with a little more info.
it seems that an above average amount of devices where sent out with a corrupted OS.
The corrupt Rom is having issues with its signal acquisition and causing issues.
its heating up from consistently trying to cycle thru signal acquisition etc etc.
I kinda believe they have nailed the issue- as we booted up the device with no back cover on,and bam!- a perfect phone that functions without the reboots ( Obviously no signal),but it works.
I have a replacement coming Tuesday.
Hmmm i think mine has something like that. BUT i dont do it so much.
Had the same issue with mine last night. Removed Sim disabled all network services and replaced Sim and it worked when I enabled networks again. Mine has been set to cdma only also. I think it might be an issue when authenticating with Verizon that somehow crashes the phone.

Let's hope that is the problem since I haven't had it and would hate to see it be a hardware problem. That is something that can be fixed with an update. I think phones are getting to thin for their own good. Cases problem don't help either.
For what it is worth, my phone is charging, streaming music, and I'm on the internet with auto brightness on. The temp is reading 100F. When I first got it, I was trying to kill the battery so I streamed Netflix over 4g and it got warm but never rebooted. Hope they figure this out for y'all.

I got stuck bootlooping related to the fb chat widget. As soon as it would load, sense would restart and after 10-20 the phone started rebooting.
Non stop. I got it to boot with battery cover off (no reception).
Cover on, it would restart as soon as the lock screen was up.
Battery pull, no help.
So I did a battery pull, guessed volume down +power and choose factory reset.
No fb chat widget and no issues so far

the GPS is not accurate at all!

Yes it locks on instantly and to a lot of satellites, but from there it goes to hell. I just completed my first run using this phone. The route i take is 5.5 miles but the phone said i only did 5.0. The app i use is called MyTracks and it overlays your path with Google maps. Normally with my old phone it lines up nearly perfectly, showing my path as being on the sidewalk. Well with the note it shows my path as running through front yards and houses, which of course i didn't do. All of that cutting through yards and houses is why my path appears to be half a mile less.
Fyi it is a sunny clear sky so no issues that way.
Has anyone else taken their Note running and experienced similar or opposite issues?
Using Navigon on both S2 and Note. Very accurate except my maps a bit old. So it shows to one way street sometimes. The Note lock within 3 seconds. Don't have your issue

I've taken my note in my car, and I can tell you that I've never seen a smartphone's GPS perform as well as the Note does. I get a lock in 5 seconds or less, and I've seen as many as 25 satellite locks, with a position as accurate as 5 feet for a long duration.
Do you keep your Note in your pocket while you're running, or is it exposed/attached to your body somewhere?
MyTracks and Navigon differ in that Navigon locks to streets, eliminating spurious off-path tracks while MyTracks saves every position report if you have it set to do so.
I used to use MyTracks to diagnose GPS issues w/captivate etc.
So far, I haven't seen any of those issues with the GPS in this phone, however, it is always spot on for me. Actually the best GPS i've used in a phone yet.
I am leaning more towards a faulty unit than a design issue..
The note is in my pocket at all times. I did The same with my old phone. The issue could be that, or maybe it just can't track slow speeds very well but it works fine at higher speeds like when driving. I am going to take it in the car later and drive that same path with it exposed and then again with it in my pocket and see what happens.

Have you changed any settings in mytracks or do you use the defaults? Is your phone in your pocket or out in your hand?
I did turn off wiring before my run, maybe there's a bug when you do that?
Just got mine yesterday. I had a Galaxy Tablet, used it with WAZE for navigation of sorts. The SGT would always show me not on the exit ramp at a particular exit, difference distance was 100 feet.
The Note shows me on the exit ramp every time, it is much better GPS
So driving down the road with the Note in my vent-attached phone holder, the GPS works flawlessly. When I put it in my pocket, it started getting inaccurate again. I'm not sure why this is the case since my old phone worked in my pocket just fine. I am hesitant to carry the phone in my hands for the 5-6 miles I run, in fear of dropping it. If others report that MyTracks works flawlessly with the Note in their pocket, I may return mine and try another.

I have Runkeeper Pro and Edmondo so I'm going to try one of those next time. I don't like those apps as much because they don't let me see a granular breakdown of my speed throughout the run. Meaning, I can see a chart of exactly how fast I was running all throughout my run. With these other 2 apps it just shows you a total speed at the end of the run, Maybe I can find another app that does what I want.
I use my GPS quite often and I will say there is absolutely NOTHING wrong with this GPS. Best phone GPS I have ever had.

Map My Ride woefully inaccurate?

So is this a problem with the Rezound, or the program? I went for a short 20 mile ride today, and Map My Ride showed it to be 28 miles. It's a 20 mile loop by my cycling computer and by google maps, and this is hardly a small margin of error. I've generally had good luck with the GPS but this is a little extreme.
well, one time just using the standard gps, i punched in an address & it showed it to be in the middle of a lake on the screen... õ_Ô
Solar flares interfering maybe. No, seriously they're high at the moment.
Rezound GPS is not very good with any of the sports tracking apps. Someone posted a thread where clearing agps cache helped but it didn't work for me. I still use my incredible for logging my runs. I haven't tried any of the ics roms but I'm hoping they address the problem.

The GPS on the Rezound sucks! I came from the Samsung Galaxy S and it had its GPS problems as well but it got better and better as time went along. Hopefully this will happen again. But I can be in my back yard and when I start Maps it locks right away and says 5meter accuracy, yet it shows me 100-150 feet away from where I really am. So its basically worthless. While driving it shows me driving through buildings and people's yards all the while saying its got a 5 meter accuracy lock.
Part of the problem may actually be solar flairs, but it does seem to be a larger issue of the Rezound doing fine-grained tracking. Here's my supposed ride yesterday--I was riding like a drunk sailor, apparently!
This problem has definitely been happening since before the current solar activity

I will have to try this.. I've never had a gps problem on HTC phones. On my Samsung charge.. if the wind was blowing you couodnt get a lock.. my buddies Samsung captivate can't get a lock unless he's holding still in clear view of the sky. If he's driving.. it won't lock at all.
Every HTC phone I have used locks in seconds.. every time, all the time and always accurate.
And you guys realize that if for whatever reason the GPS connot find.you, its going to triangulate off ccell towers, which is never accurate.

Please do try, then I think you'll see what the problem is.
Edit:
For clarification, this is the solar activity being referred too - http://news.blogs.cnn.com/2012/03/08/solar-storms-causing-few-problems-on-earth/
I just noticed that in GB and ICS, it seems to be having the problems start up around the same time (a little more than a minute after the screen goes off, it always seems to start out right though). I'm wondering if it has to do with the phone going to sleep or the apps not being able to prevent the phone from sleeping. I'm going to see if the problem happens if I set the phone to never sleep.

The phone was in airplane mode because there's no signal out where I was riding. Wasn't triangulating.
I think it's probably the uptick of solar flares, or there's a problem with how the Rezound tracks w/GPS. Or both.

Note that aGPS (the a is the assist part) uses the network to provide the assist to the GPS to get a lock. If you turn Airplane mode on, you are turning off part of the ability of the Assist in getting the lock faster. So you can be making the use of the GPS much less accurate as it takes longer for the GPS to get a lock.
Once the GPS gets the lock, it doesn't need the assist again, but some apps don't keep using the GPS steadily, and need to reacquire the lock over and over.
Example, if you are using Gmaps, you will notice that the GPS satellite image will show in the top of the notification area while you are using the app. But when you move away from Gmaps, the symbol disappears. That is because it stopped accessing the GPS.
If you don't see the GPS satellite in the notification area, the GPS chip is not currently being accessed and it is is using next to no power during that time.
Not being familiar with the app mentioned in the OP, you would need to check that the GPS is being used continually.
It is not unusual for stand alone GPS trackers (non-phone types) to have glitches in their tracking as you travel, depending on the speed and access to the sky for the GPS signals. Devices like Garmin compensate for that by keeping you on the road, even if the temp position places you a distance from the road so you don't notice it much there. But if you are just tracking position (no locking to a road), you will end up with jutting points that can be a distance from where you were at the time.
A nice thought, but all these app should be pulling accurate gps even if the app doesn't have the foreground and they should prevent the phone from sleeping.

So I tested the app, 'Myrun' And I found your problem. when the app is in the background, it does not update at the same rate as it does when it is in the foreground.
On my attachment, the green dot is where I started, I went out, up the road, and turned around. The screen was on this entire time, notice how accurate it tracked me. It even has me on the correct sides of the road..
at the Yellow dot, I turned the screen off, notice how it jumps from point to point , making it very inaccurate. If I had to guess, I would assume that the app either A, does not utilize the GPS radio while the phone is 'off', or, it polls it less frequently. Either way, this is not a fault of the phone, as you can navigate with the screen off accurately with google nav/maps. So the phone is capable of allowing apps to use GPS data even in an 'off' state.
I would contact the App developer and see if they can fix it. In the mean time, make sure your phone is charged 100% and set the screen to never time out, and turn the brightness all the way down and you'll get accurate tracking with those apps.
Personally, my phone is set to never turn off, and my bike has a phone mount with a charger that gets power off my front wheel hub.
So all the tracking apps have the same problem and only with the rezound but it's not the rezound?
