[Q] Android 4.4.2 Update Failed - Verizon Samsung Galaxy S 4

I tried to update my phone today and ran into an issue. It seems that when the phone reboots into recovery mode, it says that there is an error and forces me to find the download image manually. I looked to see if it was on the SD card and there was no luck there. Is it because the download itself is corrupted in some way, or is this a bigger issue than that? BTW my phone isn't rooted if that helps

Did you get the update OTA? If so you could try a factory reset, then re-download the update OTA, and try again.

Rooted S4 won't update to 4.4, error, rooted with CF-Auto-Root-jflte-jfltexx-gti9505
I haven't gotten the OTA notification yet, but if I go to about phone, system updates it will find it and download it.
When it tries to install it will do the normal things, but at the end won't complete and says error.
What error would it be? The S4 was rotted with CF-Auto-Root-jflte-jfltexx-gti9505 and I also read the source code of KitKat was realeased from Samsung. I guess I may have to wait until I get an OTA update or until one of you masters redoes the update.
Please Help.
Thank You

ive flashed stock rom and stock recovery and still have the custom unlocked padlock.. any ideas? i need to go back to verizon since i messed up my sim and 4g is broken.
third time flashing recovery and stock rom and the padlock is finally gone
I have the same issue. I had jellybean. I think it was 4.2.2, rooted it and then they pushed the OTA kitkat 4.4.2. I lost my root and I'd really like to get rid of that padlock screen now. Problem is people keep saying I can use triangle away to reset the binary counter and that will get rid of it. Can't do that without it being rooted though. Some say just re flash with the stock firmware. I'd do it if I could find the file but some say that doesn't work anyway. If anyone has any suggestions I'd appreciate it. Thanks.

Ive read somewhere on here that it may be something on you external sd card , possibly old " hack , root " files from a previous phone?
Also if busy box was ever installed that would need to be removed. There's probably something else I'm forgetting. But if your phone just has that custom screen.... Verizon doesn't really care i can tell you from personal experience.

Thanks for the reply. I read those responses but mine didn't have the padlock out of the box. I just figured maybe someone found a way to get rid of it by now after the KitKat OTA removed their root. Perhaps re flashing the stock rom, which I can't find, might do it. And I did look around with no luck.
Eh. No biggie. It's not affecting the performance of the phone. I'm just being anal. I guess I can live with it. Thanks again.

Let's figure out how to update the baseband on this phone

Well, I know you've all been waiting for the MJ4 update, and I have all the system files ready to go. However, the baseband refuses to update past MI3 for me. Nothing i've done gets this thing updated past MI3. I had it at MI5 at one point, but in an attempt to get the MJ4 update before someone passed it along to me, I Odined back to MI3 and now have the stupid message about roll-out updates exceeding.
Basically, anyone with any sort of knowledge in this please chime in with suggestions, ideas, whatever!
I know a few of you have had trouble getting past MI3 yourself with my firmware update. My phone updated fine with it in the beginning, but now it won't. I'm assuming samsung has some security checks in place that reverts any changes unless they're official?
I have tried the following:
-dd from a friend's phone who has MI5. No luck, mine is still at MI3.
-created a flashable zip from the update.zip MJ4 OTA. System files get updated fine, but baseband remains at MI3.
-created a flashable zip with just the modem/apnhlos updates. No luck, still remains at MI3.
-created a odin tar with MI5 modem/apnhlos from a friend's phone. No luck, ODIN refuses to flash it.
-tried flashing the official MI5 update from MI3 with stock recovery. No luck, signature verification error.
-tried flashing the official MJ4 update from MI3 with stock recovery. Obviously no luck, signature verification error, and i'm on an older MI3.
-tried creating an all in one flashable from MI3 all the way up to MI4. Works in custom recovery, however, baseband remains at MI3.
-tried dd aboot, rpm, tz, sbl1, sdi, manually from adb, then applying MI5 update, then MJ4. No luck, baseband remains at MI3
It looks as though if you haven't been officially updated, it refuses to update any of the core firmware.
I'm pretty stumped and annoyed at Samsung for their HTC-style crap they're pulling on us. This may be my last Samsung phone.
If anyone has any ideas or would like to test things please feel free to reply back with suggestions or whatever.
How can the signature verification be fixed

Well I wonder if we can get it to work through kies.
It seems to me this was something we had to do at one point with the epic 4G the one with the slide case.

Probably, but kies keeps telling me that firmware initialization isn't available for my phone
The problem isn't how to update officially, it's how to apply baseband updates for rooted people, which is looking very hard or impossible to do.
It's like .....if you're rooted, you can't get anything. We can keep updating the android system just fine, but any firmware or baseband updates absolutely refuse to apply. I'm guessing a firmware update is what solved the audio popping problems too. Maybe a android system update did, but who knows.
When I tried to update through the stock recovery it said the signature verification failed but the update finished. But in the phone nothing changes at all. That's kinda strange I've never seen that before, it either does the update , or it fails.

well what im thinking right off the bat is to modify the actual kies program itself so that we could get it to recognize the firmware we want to update to as the one it finds. if you could get me the extracted files I can see what I can come up with.

the original update.zip or the updated MJ4 android system files?
The other option would be to make a modified odin.

Also you obviously are knox tripped maybe that USA the problem?

what we need to see is exactly how odin and or kies is communicating with that part of the device and modify it to do it differently.

Yeah that would be an option, if someone can create one with all the necessary files (not just a system image, but recovery, modem, etc) Because the official updates won't apply if you have mixed firmwares. So if a modified odin image were created, it would have to contain all the MI5 firmware as well.

You can definitely odin back to MI3. I don't think there is an Odin MI5 around. The problem is, since Samsung is rolling out these updates in stages, probably to avoid server load, people will be stuck on MI3 until they allow more updates. You'll get the error message about roll-out updates exceeding.

I'll upload them in a sec. It'll be like 1.3gb so it may take me around 30 minutes to upload. Also, I don't have the official MJ4 kernel either. I don't know how to properly extract the update.zip. It was created in a way that doesn't allow traditional extraction. If you repair it with winrar, it treats the boot.img as a corrupted file and excludes it from the rebuilt zip file.

The update.zip that freeza posted didn't work at all even though I'm not rooted either. Like stated before it gave me the signature verification failed and it went through with the update. But nothing in the system changed not the build number nor the baseband nor anything at all. I'm not trying to sound like an a.. but I just want to explain as clearly as I can.

Unmodified meaning custom status. Knox trip as far as i know won't have an affect on your ability to receive updates, BUT now that you mention it, maybe it has an affect on you being able to manually update your baseband. I was only able to do it one time with a flashable zip, and I am not sure if i were knox tripped or not, but i sure am now.
Whoever you can think of, we could definitely use their help!

Before the update came out my phone was saying i was modified when i have not done ANYTHING to my phone yet. I told my brother n he told me to take the SD card out because Samsung has a weird bug with SD cards that if u have too many files or something it'll say ur modified. Idk but after i did that i got the exceeded error..... Also if u just clean up ur SD card it'll work too. He actually sent this

she (sorry )may be thinking of me. I'm out at cota today doing formula 1 stuff so will be a little bit before I can help. But I can say...
Was able to go from mi3 to mi5 (baseband included) using DeLaVega root and wanam. But then had to do some messing to get mi5 to show official.
Alternatively was also able to get official with wanam on mi5 by using the DeLaVega script and wanam on the official mi5 firmware also.
In both cases baseband was changed.when going back to MI3 and forward to mi5.both cases root still worked. Knox still 0x0
Of course no matter which method i try I still get update exceeded and am waiting for mj4.
I do have a few more ideas for you guys but need some time in front of a pc.to be sure. And a copy of the update to verify.
I'll set aside some time this evening.

I just received the update as well. It was small. I just clicked check for updates for the first time in a month and was shocked to see my phone found one. Don't know what the changes are yet.
I also got the update and I can't find any update notes anywhere yet. Searched through Verizon and Samsung's websites, nothing is posted yet. I'm guessing it is just a maintenance update.
New build number is JSS15J.I545VRUEMK2

I am rooted MJ7 and this update failed as well. Im sure there will be updates soon. Give it time.
Guys...if your rooted and you accept the OTA you could brick your phone. If your on a custom ROM most dev's remove the files necessary to take the OTA's. Simply be patient and wait for someone to, in the spirit of the holidays LOL :silly: , wrap it in a pretty little zip package then we can flash it via custom recovery.

Thanks Coycaine..Is there a way I can go back to build VRUEMK2 and then Root it from there. That way I can download a custom ROM for the 4.4.2 KitKat?? Does this make any sense? Sorry, i'm slowly learning all this.
If you already updated to kitkat there is absolutely no way u can downgrade unless u updated it using surge update to kitkat. But right now u r stuck in kitkat. For me I am still on rooted mk2 waiting for a root for kitkat. U should of waited before updating.

You may want to search these threads. I don't remember reading about anyone trying to downgrade from NC5 back to MK2 yet, but I'm sure someone has at least tried. The leaked KK build (NC2) was able to be downgraded, but with some problems/issues.

There are some that tried and are now bricked until there is an ODIN file for NC5.
If root is important, one should just be patient, sit back, wait.

You know what, i'm just going to take your advise and wait. I agree with you, there isn't any guarantee with the messages i have been reading.
Thanks Coycaine
I'm always amused by these "I took the update... Help I lost root" posts. It takes time and unless you're actively working on a root solution.... Leave the people alone and let them work. If root is important to you, then never update until a solution is found first or your stuck. No amount of begging will find a solution faster.

Patient: Doctor, it hurts when I do this...
Doctor: Don't do that.

Sugarhill, don't ever become a motivational speaker...you'd make a great Biff III though for Back To The Future 4!
Rizz, sorry to say... I'm glad your situation is what it is, now I have a thread to check on to see if a solution has been developed!

I've never rooted before nor been interested. But since the Google morons screwed up SD Card access I will cross over to the root side as soon as the root method is worked out.

Really disappointed that Wakelock Detector no longer works, so I can't wait to root!
Yeah there's a bunch of us now waiting on the route to be achieved for the s4 on Android 4.4 .2.
We just got to sit back and relax and let the good people work their magic to get this done. It will come in good time. But hopefully not long. Lol

What's wrong with SD Card access?

What's wrong with SD Card access?
Every time I think I will try to go without root'n, they screw something else up and I find I need it again. This sd permissions problem has really messed me up. I had to move 3gig worth of data back to my internal memory to get some of my apps to work and I don't have much room available on it. If I knew this, I wouldn't have upgraded.

Google put restrictions on SD cards that broke most programs that rely on them. Search for KitKat and sd card for more details.

From what I read, if the app is not one of the pre-installed apps that comes with the ROM then the app will not have permission to freely access the SD card. There is an App to fix this in the Play Store but I think the app needs root. This really sucks. I thought I used TB to freeze the OTA on my wife's phone but she approved the OTA last night and now I am stuck until someone creates a new root exploit.

Do you know if there is a root for NC5 at this point? I just updated my phone and lost root. If there is a root solution out there now and you could link that to me it would be much appreciated. Thank you!

I just recieved OTA update from Verizon for the 4.4.2. Can this be rooted now that I had to go back to a stock Verizon S4 I545 vrufnc5. If so what are my options? Please give me instructions. Thanks

I was also foolish enough to accept the OTA update before checking to make sure I could re-root my phone after the update. Stuck waiting for a solution now. Hopefully someone releases a root solution soon. Let me know If any root fix comes up soon please! Thank you.

Update My Verizon Samsung Galaxy S4 to Lollipop

Hello guys. I am new here, so please bear with me.
I have a Verizon Samsung Galaxy S4, running android version 4.4.2 kitkat. It has no root, custom roms, or anything.
When I try to update my software (settings > more > software update > check for new software update) it tells me "Software update temporarily unavailable. Try again later". It does that every time I try it (I have had the phone for 3 days now, wanting to update) and obviously, I was connected to a WiFi network.
I contacted Samsung via their "Live Chat" function. The lady I talked to told me to boot into safe mode and update, and that it would work (of course, it didn't).
Is there something I am missing? Why will it not update?
The phone is not activated, if that makes a difference.

Did you Notice him that its smartphone bootloader will be "secure download" locked if he updates its phone so he will never be able to flash or root?
Maybe he will later want to root its smartphone, but he will face the most locked bootloader ever.
I am just to figure out why I didn't get an OTA update?

I just assumed he just wants to update to Lollipop. His issue is that he is not able to get the OTA update and he was looking for a solution. If he was successful in getting the OTA during his attempt the result would have been the same in regards to rooting. Rooting and installing ROMs is not for everyone. Probably most people don't do it.

There are several methods on this forum that will help you get the update. There are method's I believe Killnolife is referring to that allow you to root your phone and install custom ROMs. The link I gave you in my first reply is the official update and once installed you will not be able to root if that is your goal. But just search through the post on this forum and you should find a solution.
EDIT: The instructions to upgrade to Lollipop are in the S4 General forum.
Ok, thanks guys! I did want to root my phone (I actually just did that) so I don't want to update to lollipop then.
