The noise cancelling headset MDR-NC31EM, does it have a microphone? If yes, where is the microphone?
Another question is what the difference b/t "Noise cancelling (Auto)" and "Noise cancelling (Always)"?
Thanks.
1 I think the mics are on the earpieces
2 I would like to know this too
Sent from my D6503 using XDA Free mobile app
The microphone(s) is in the earpiece.
About the difference between the 2 settings:
"Auto" turns on noise cancelling only when you unlock the phone. When the phone is locked (or screen is turned off) noise cancelling stops.
"Always" means... always. From the moment you plug the headphones till the moment you unplug them noise cancelling in on.
Hope that helps.
Binaural recording
Have anyone tried to record stereo audio using the MDR-NC31EM earphones? Maybe it's possible to do a binaural 3D audio recording through it.
Have you guys make calls using this headset? Many people whom I talked to using this headset told me that it is very noisy and cannot hear my voice properly. Anyone has this issue?

Well I don't have this problem. I switch it to "Auto", and when I make a call, the noise cancelling function seems to be reduced a bit so that the voice of the one talking to me will not be eliminated too much.
This is indeed very unclear.
I was testing it with a friend just now, and when I rubbed my fingers over the microphones on the earpieces they could hear the disturbance. This, to me, seems very strange. If the microphones are pointed outwards, then all the god damn sound around you will be picked up and get sent to the other person. How is that noise cancelling?
What am I missing?
I think I had the noise cancelling set to "Always", but even if it's on auto, the microphones are positioned in a very stupid way. Am I right?

That isn't the case. Auto just means that your phone will try to judge what kind of environment you're in between the three manual presets (airplane, bus/train and office).

I'm wondering if it's possible as well, I plan on trying it soon.

The noise cancelling isn't really made for calls, it's for cutting out unwanted noises while listening to music.

Hands-free calling
When a call comes in you can use your MDR-NC31EM to enjoy the call. Your hands are free and you have excellent call audio.
Note: call handling is only possible when the MDR-NC31EM is connected to a device with a 3.5 mm 5-pole audio contact. Check your device specifications for details.

I don't think that you're supposed to switch out headphones when a call comes in. That'd be... strange.
When i want to talk with this headset, i take out one of them and speak to the earpiece. So can the other people good listen was i said.

Hi all, I have a question about my GS2 that I bought recently.
I recently upgraded from a Nokia e71x. I'm a college student with a roommate, so I used a wired headset to talk to my gf quietly at night on the phone (mostly talking low voice or whispering). I bought the samsung earbud+mic that comes with other samsung phones and she couldn't hear me at all or my voice was breaking up. I also tried using a little adapter to use my old ear piece but still, same problem. So I tried to use the earpieces in the voice recorder app to see if it was the calling or the mics and it was picking up my voice with perfect quality!
is there any way to fix my phone so that it sends better voice quality or something? I tried using the mics on my brother's iPhone and they work perfectly fine on it :/
Does it break up when talking at normal volumes? It could be that low volume doesn't work well with that microphone.

Not at normal voices, just at much lower/quieter voices. I know the mic works because using it on voice recorder I can hear my voice perfectly. Also, I used the mics on my old Nokia and my brother's iPhone and it works great
Keep in mind during a phone call noise reduction will be active. Not active during voice recorder. The phone may be half trying to cancel out your voice because it thinks it's background noise.
If you can get noise reduction shut off, that particular microphone may work better. The apple headset shouldn't work as well with noise reduction as it's a different brand, enabling better low volume conversations.
To test it out, use the Samsung headset to call someone and hold the microphone next to the microphone on top of the phone and whisper, see how well it sounds.
Then move the phone a normal distance away from you and see how whispering sounds when the microphones on the phone are and aren't covered.
If it is noise reduction causing you trouble, holding it next to the top of the phone should make whispering pickup better. And covering up the phone mics at normal distance should also improve how whispering sounds.

I tried what you suggested with no difference between any of the mics. Also, I tried to turn off noise suppression, but apparently noise suppression is already off when you use a headset. Thanks, do you have any other advice?
Lol, I guess get an apple headset. I'm sure there might be other things you could do, but I can't think of any. Could just be the Samsung one is not as good as the apple one.

Reason I ask...
Whenever I put a call on speakerphone, no one can ever hear me.
And I just now noticed the couple videos I took with my DNA are only playing audio out of one channel (right).
Any info would be appreciated. Thank you.
And I know about the noise cancelling mic...
Curious if there is another mic (third) inside that is defective or I just have a bad flash on my rom.
I believe there are 2 one on top and one on bottom of the phone.
Sent from my HTC6435LVW using xda premium
sounds like a defective mic.
Mic works on calls without speaker phone on, voice recorder works, video audio records, although only one channel...

sounds like it uses one mic on the call and would normally be doing sound canceling as well but its dead and that happens to be the mic used when on speaker phone. That would also explain why your getting mono recording but to be sure in video options in the camera is stereo sound checked?
Speaker phone works amazing for me on this. Must be a defaulty device?

Yea, stereo is checked.
Might have to deal with it... Not really wanting to go JTag route on a replacement.
Ugh... spoke to HTC. Apparently the mic for speakerphone calls and for stereo recording is located up top with the noise cancelling mic.
So new question, how hard would it be to replace that you think?
As Sony said that the Digital Noise Canceling Function in Z2 reduce a noise to 98% when you listening a music with your headphone or headset, Do you thinkthe Digital Noise Canceling in Z2 will work if Z2 is in your pocket? Because I and my friend think that the work of this function is the phone measure and analyze a sound around Z2 with its microphone and then when it gets a result, it will tries to reduce that a noise sound to make a sound in Z2 clearer and better. So, If we put Z2 in our pocket,I think this function will work improperly in reducing the noise sound.
this function might be work if we set a mode (bus/train,etc.) in this function manually not let this function do by itself (auto),
What do you think about the work of this function?
I think it should work fine in your pocket. The phone is only doing the calculations necessary to do the noise cancellation. It is using a microphone built in to the headphones to gather the ambient noise, so it will not be affected by having the phone in your pocket. That's why you need special headphones.
Yes, it will. It registers the ambient noise through microphones built into the headphones - microphones built into the phone itself are not involved in NC process at all.
Does every z2 come with the noise canceling headphones or it's only for the people who preorder it?

For now, Sony confirmed to bundle them with pre-order stock. No word about what's going to happen after that.
My guess ? They will keep including them because NC is a big selling point of Z2 and not including the headphones wouldn't make any sense.
i
Noise-Cancellation is a process for mechanical wave (Sound)
whenever these waves get into this process Noise-Cancellation machine (or sensor) will make opposite waves of them wherever phone be in ur pocket or on a table. If there s sound so there s noise-cancellation
:good:

I can confirm that the noise canceling is using one microphone on each earbud. These microphones are also used for your speech when making calls. To work, the headphones utilizes a new, 5-pole connector (and of course some special firmware in the phone).

Did you have a chance to try them out ? Would love to hear some feedback on how the noise cancellation actually performs while listening to music etc. as it's one of the main reasons I'm upgrading my original Z.

You have three settings to choose from: Office, Train/Bus, and Airplane. The noise cancelling is especially effective, in my opinion, for the kind of "drone" you usually will suffer from on aircraft. In the office, voices will become significantly dampened, but not completely extinguished - you will still perceive people talking loudly to you, but you might have totake them off to hear what is being said.
The sound quality shall generally not be affected by the noise cancelling, and I at least cannot hear any difference in that regard whether noise cacelling is on or off, except of course that any outside disturbance is reduced.
When it comes to the sound quailty in general, that is very much a matter of personal preference. Our noise-cancelling headset will be especially attractive for those who prefer a strong bass experience, while I personally prefer a more balanced reproduction even if that is not so exciting to dance to. I suggest strongly that you try to listen to them, and compare with other headsets, before you buy; its horses for courses, so to speak.
Thanks chief. I'm definitely getting the phone anyway - might not use the noise cancellation feature sometimes if I don't like it - but from what you're saying, it's exactly what I expected. Never believe that any noise cancelling can extinguish ALL the ambient noise, but as long as it doesn't muffle or distort the music too much, and sound quality is decent ( I love the bundled headphones I received with my Xperia Z ) then it's all good.

Interesting piece of information here..
So can we safely say that headphones without microphones will not work at all for NC? I wonder if there's an option to use the mic on the device itself for NC.

Yes, we need compatible headset for NC to work. Sony offers 3-4 headsets that support that, the one that is bundled with the phone and a few others - I assume some of them are or will be wireless etc.
There is, however, no way to enable NC with no headset plugged in - which makes sense because it would give no benefits at all. And the same goes for headsets that are not equipped with mics and a 5 bolt connector.

Nope. The mic built in A-Jays is for calls only.
That's just bollocks! (pardon me)
Sony marketed the Z2 with a NC built into the phone to reduce the bulk and what not.. but it seems to come with a catch.
The mic on any earphones can be accessed for any purpose. Unless there is a certain mic spec to follow to achieve NC....
Just hoping the package we get in my country comes with NC compatible earbuds..
Sony NC earphones have 5 poles on the 3.5mm connector. thats 2 more than other earphones and is used for NC. I am not aware if there are other earphones with 5 poles

It has a 5pole jack like the MDR-NC31 bundled with Z2, so I strongly think it does work.
But the Z2 doenst have a profile for the newer phones. I could only select the MDR-NC31 profile.

Yes, it's true. That's why I said I strongly think and not for 100% sure (but I think it will be pretty "funny" if it doesn't). Maybe if you connect it with the NC31 profile will work with it, I don't know. Personally I hate what Noise Cancellation do with the sound, so I prefer the passive one instead of the active.

The microphones used for noise cancelling act as the microphone for calls.
I've tried them out in call and have had no problems.

The red circle shows were the microphone is on the earphone, a way you can test it is if you activate the noise cancelling, rub your fingers across that part of the earphone, you'll hear that typical swashing sound when rubbing a mic.
(I took the photo with the Z2)
Hi, could you describe the method for recieving calls with this headset? Does it auto-answer, or do you have to press an answer icon on your phone display? As I understand it, this headset doesn't have any volume/answer buttons.
annoying
Correct, the headset doesn't feature any buttons. To me that's quite a downer. It's very inconvenient to pull out the phone for all actions like picking a call and pause/play/rev/fwd music. They sound good and noise cancelling works perfectly in flight, but I really dislike that they don't feature a button.
I've tested mine is nc31e without m.
and it has mic but I can't find where it is.
These are microphones in the headphones.

Same issue here.. Pls anyone could help?
I know this is an old thread but I've had a problem with my headset pretty much since day one. People who i speak with can hear the background noise a whole lot more (like a storm) more than what they can hear me.
It works perfect with noise canceling all on its own and with music, the problem lies with calls.
Can anyone offer a solution? (BTW, I've got a Z3)
Anyone's incoming call or any notification sound are still coming out from the speakers and not the earphones with the earphones plugged in? I'm with the noise cancelling earphones if that's how it's supposed to be?
All my previous phones mutes the speaker and you hear the ringtones/notifications through the earphones when plugged in

Press it till the end and it'll work.
And no, it's not normal to have sound on speakers and earphones in the same time.

As I understand it, this is a "feature" of Kitkat (If not Jellybean because it did this to me on my GS3). On my GS3 I rooted it and got around the problem but I can't find a way around it on the Z2. There is an app that forces ringtones to headphones but it does not seem to work on the Z2, at least without root. I don't understand why anyone would want this feature. If I am in the library and listening to headphones I don't need my ringtone blasting away. And it is impossible to hear on a crowded bus.

but that's weird when I had my Z1 running on kitkat it doesn't have this problem... isn't it a hardware issue? so this is happening on all Z2? surprised there was no much complaint about this to Sony...
