Date/time stamp issue when transferring vids/pics to computer. Help please. - Xperia Z2 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi, i am having an issue when transferring my vids/pics from my Z2 to my PC.
On all my previous phones when transferring media to my PC it would be copied and labelled with a date stamp followed by a picture number- an example being 2014-01-13- 0123. This has always made organising and finding my pics/vids in there relavent folders an eay task.
The problem i am now faced with is when i transfer pics/vids from my Z2. The pictures are stamped with DSC_0001 for example and the videos with MOV_0001. This means when on my PC i have to examine each file individually to find out its date and time of origin.
Even more of an headache is everytime i have transferred files from my Z2 and then take more pics/vids and then try to transfer them to my PC the computer will not allow transfer as the stamp on the file i am transferring from my Z2 eg - DSC_0001 is already present on the PC from a previous transfer. This means i have to rename all the PC files first.
I hope this makes sense and hopefully there is an easy fix.
I am new to Android and overall i am very happy with the operating system, being a massive improvement generally over my previous phones. Fingers crossed this is down to my lack of knowledge and just involves a settings change somewhere.
Thanks in advance for any help.

When recording Videos or taking pictures, sony devices uses the univertal method of time stamping media,
It adds it to the properties of the file
There is no fix for such as far as i currently know, you kinda have to deal with this method of time stamping,
On your pc you can see this by right clicking on a video and clicking properties

Are you trying this app?
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=net.inedev.renamer
This app have option that rename automatically all picture to date and year. Try it.
Send from my Sony Xperia Z2

link not working for me mate.

Thank you for the reply, i think we may have crossed wires. The problem i am having is that the files on my sony Z2 are being labelled with numbers not dates - i.e DSC_0001 - 2/3/4/ etc for pics and MOV_0001 - 2/3/4/ etc for movies. When i transfer from my phone to the PC the process begins again from 0001 on my phone. Further transfers then tell me the file already exists on my PC and would i like to replace the original file with the new one.
If the phones was naming the pics/vids with the date and time or not reverting back to 0001 when transferred to my PC my problem would be solved.
Thanks again.

[Q] associate album picture in music player

Hi everybody
first of all i want to say TNX to all the wonderful people here, who make my HD2 experience so much better
i have a good question which i bet other HD2 owners are struggling with:
i keep my mp3 files stored on my SD card.
Q: i can't seem to find a way to set a certain picture to a certain song in the music player (instead of the default picture of the note icon).
what i'v tried up until now:
- i went to My Device\MUSIC and saw the way the original (crappy) song is set with its own picture, and tried to set my mp3 file the same way with it's own picture, but - no luck, still the annoying note icon..
so.. i give up for now, hopefully someone knows the answer to my question here
thanks allot guys
I think I've got the solution:
Settings -> Manage Applications -> Media Storage and choose clear data, this will wipe the media library database from the phone.
you then have to power down and reboot. Now when you open the music app it will rebuild its database.
Click to collapse

SORTED! tnx to Wilco!
Wilco you are the man
i didn't find a way to delete the media library database from the phone, the solution presented in the thread is meant to work with another HTC device which has different settings, BUT - the issue was the same -
in order to show a photo instead of the default note icon in the music player htc devices require an image called "folder.jpg" located in every folder which contains mp3's, this is the picture which will be shown as the album picture. so in order to show a different picture for every album the albums must be in different folders.
there is a certain BUG which occures when there is no folder.jpg file in the folder containing the mp3 file and you try to add it later, the device has a DB that records every folder you create and it doesn't remember a folder.jpg file in that particular folder so it will not show a picture even if you add one, i still havn't figured out way to clean that DB, anyway, by simply putting a folder.jpg with your choice of image and changing the folder's name to another one, the device will recognize this as a brand new folder and tada! album picture is presented
hope we helped you guys!
thanks!!

[Q] Photo importation nightmare with i9100

Hi, just a simple question for you folks:
How do you import photos cleanly from the i9100?
Kies is a mess: no thumbnail / every single folder is scanned, regardless of .media files / files already imported are not identified as such / no grouping by date etc.
Windows 7 file explorer and picasa are barely better...
Help please.
with any other android phone, you just drag and drop using a file explorer. create a new folder called pics, or put them in the DCIM folder if you want, and let it scan away and youre done.
if the SGS2 is having some specific issue that causes this to not work like it normally does, then i have no idea.
same applies to your music collection too.
I delved deeper into the problem. Switching to debug mode / removing kies usb connexion mode allows windows 7 to display thumbnails, making it easier to import files with live galery.
Nightmare is back with ICS...How the *** do you remove the mtp crap? There's no pure storage connection mode now, is there?
To answer the above remarks, I don't want to drag/drop from a folder. I want to import with some sort of software, so that photos are auto-rotated / erased / tagged.
Cyanogenmod 9 is just perfect for photo import: it only scans the dcim folders and displays thumbnails when importing...unfortunately, I quite like stock ics and I'll only move back to CM9 with jelly bean or when Samsung forsakens us
Help?
Here it is, your posts are really confusing and everything but to the point
Thank you. Above post worked. Sorta. Thumbnails are back.
See screenshot for the mess I'm talking about (only 2 pics to import).

[Q] [SOLVED] Gallery App and Pictures Time Stamp

hey everyone!
I have extensively search the forum about my question but didn't find the answer, so here we go:
I had to format my android internal memory, before that i copied all the picture to my pc (windows) then after the format i copy all them back to the correct directory.
The problem is that the android galerry uses the "create date" attribute of the pictures to sort them, and now all the pictures are sorted in the same date.
I checked and all the exif data is ok in all the pictures, anyone know if there is a way to change the creation date of a file based on the exif (batch process or in the worst case scenario, one by one)?
thanks everyone!
Quick pic from market its far faster and uses creation name to sort.
Sent from the valley of the shadows....
Solved
i'm at home now and i just dicovered that if you copy the pictures files via usb mass storage (instead of using mtp protocol) the timestamp of the files remaing unchanged (i guess the mtp kind of recreate the files on the phone), so the sorting of the gallery is normal again.

Photo date correction app?

I just recently had to transfer pictures to a PC so I could update a phone. After transferring the files back they don't show up in chronological order in the gallery app due to the file creation date being changed. I guess this is a common problem with android so I'm surprised that it's giving me such a headache to find a solution. The only app I found that does what I'm looking for (Photo Date Correction) doesn't work with any Android version past 3.1.
Does anyone know of a solution to make the file created date to match the EXIF date taken? I'm looking for an android solution; copying 5,202 picture to PC and back was a nightmare that I don't want to repeat any time soon.
Thanks

Ok, so I found a gallery app called F-Stop that works OK in sorting by date taken. It still boggles my mind that stock gallery apps don't have this feature. It's stupid little things like this that keep edging me more and more toward a god forsaken iPhone.

Moving Pics to new phone while preserving the dates?

Oops, seem to have cross posted due to having two tabs open, cant make sense of the changed layout!
Mods please feel free to delete this thread if no one has answered!
Hi all!
An oldie but a goldie!
I've changed from S6 32g, to S6Eedge 64g since I was running out of space.
Now I need to transfer 4000 photos (sorted by date) to the new phone. A direct copy from PC converts all the created dates to the current date (ie when transfer is done) which as you can imagine screws everything up royally!
Ive tried and failed in many many many ways including:
Samsung Smart Switch
FTP
Syncing programs from pc to phone
ADB push
WEBdav
Hail marys, and praying to every god out there
They all bugger up the dates...........
The ONLY ONLY way Ive found out that works is by zipping up the original files, transferring to new phone, and unzipping locally with Total Commander. ONLY Total Commander seems to be able to unzip and preserve the dates, all the other file managers and extracting programs (I tried 10-15) out there can NOT manage this. Total Commander probably works cuz im rooted, and it can use this.
HOWEVER this only worked with smaller directories, but my main pics folder is a 8 gig compressed zip, and when I try the same way Total Commander only manages to unzip the same 700 files and stops (anyone else come across this limitation?). So the only way I can manage is to zip up the original files in 7-8 different zip files and unzip locally individually, which is a big hassle.
Ive googled many threads on this problem, most of them were unresolved and some solutions refer to previous android versions or software and dont work anymore.
I'm hoping that you all dont spend four days setting up a new phone everytime ( home screen and app settings is a whole different drama! Thank you Titanium backup! iOS really has the jump on Andoird when it comes to changing phones...)
The only thing I can think of which I havent tried yet is USB OTG, since I dont have the cable. Anyone can confirm whether this method keeps the dates unchnaged?
So in your experience, whats the best way of doing this? How do you guys do it?
To be honest for 4 thousand photos swapping back and forth between devices you are better off using a could storage. Especially if you want to minimise the risk of loosing them all if something goes wrong. All zip folders will extract with the original date it. You could try and torrent you DCIM folder and language download it to your computer. Torrents download with their file dates intact.
Thanks for your reply!
IMHO this cloud thing is actually whats causing so many of the problems in hardware design these days in general.
Why is it so hard for companies to realise that when you are two floors underground, or roaming or even in middle of central london, net connection is not guaranteed......
Let alone the speed, convenience, security issues etc etc etc
As to the loss risk, I back them up on my home pcs regularly with a sync application, which ironically enough works perfectly well thank god!
So for me cloud is a no go....
As to your other suggestion, sounds great
Can I torrent just on the local net? ie direct from phone to pc?
Any apps you can reccomend? will save me trawling through a hundred crap apps in GPlay.
Thanks again for your time, its appreciated!
PS re what you said about all zips extracting correctly. Can you try on your device? Zip up a few small old files on your pc, transfer the zip to phone, extract there, and check the dates.
All except one of the ones I have tried do it, as mentioned above.
PPS Gave your torrent suggestion a go, no joy. All the transferred files had the new date ;-(.
I tried the the utorrent android app...
Update and for future help for people who will come across this issue.
I managed it!
I used Total Commander on the phone through the LAN plugin function, to access my backup folder on the pc, select all files and copy to local phone directory.
You need to initiate the copy from the PHONE on Total Commander, ie pull the files onto the phone, dont copy them by drag and drop from PC.
It took a while but it was done!
Dates and timestamps all preserved and correct!
