[REQ] Modded Vonage Mobile - Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have the T-Mobile $30 per month plan which is great except for the 100 minutes. My workaround is the Vonage Mobile app. For free you get 3000 minutes per month for outgoing calls to the US. The best part is it spoofs the caller ID to that of your actual number so when you call people they still know it's you. Also, if it wasn't clear, this uses wifi or cell data. As nice as that is the app has a few missing features I'd love to see and I'm hoping someone here will be able to implement them.
Missing Features
------------------------
1. The app doesn't work with 7 digit numbers, rather you have to enter full 10 digit numbers. It'd be great if there was a place to plugin a default area code for 7 digit numbers.
2. The app isn't integrated with the native dialer at all. Other apps I've used let you dial with the native dialer and when you hit call you get presented with a choice to continue as normal or send the call to the app. I'd like that.
------------------------
My apologies if this is in the wrong place or incorrectly labeled. Kindly correct it if so.
Also I'll happily donate $10 to whoever makes this happen.
The app for anyone wondering: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.vonage.TimeToCall

Answering Machine for XDA???

First:
@XDA-Developers: Great work guys :!: :!: :!: Keep on ruling :!: :!: :!:
Second:
Does any1 ever thought about programming an answering-machine for the XDA :?: Or where do I find such a tool :?: Would be nice to have the missed calls directly on the XDA without using the Provider Mailbox (no costs for me to check the calls).
Sure, I know that this only may work if the XDA is connected to the network.
Greetings,
Kaputter
The answering machine idea is kinda cool, but really probably wouldn't save much on system usage, at least in the US. When someone calls in and goes to voice mail, that call is free. When you call to check it, you pay for that. So...if the incoming call is answered and recorded by the device, then you will pay for that. Net result--same cost. Actually it could cost more, because you could retrieve multiple voice mails in one call, but each call in would cost you at least a minute.
Its about functionality
It is not so much about cost as about functionality. Think of all the fun stuff you could do if you could program your own voicemailbox. Use callerid, special voicemail dropbox functions, only let your best friends ring you normally and dump the rest to the voicemail....
The idea of selective calling is very good--but would not need a voice mail system on the XDA, since it could just pass on the "deny" command when the call comes in. This could be useful for those times you don't want to be disturbed unless it is critical. Of course, you could do fun things with your own voicemail like having funny outbound messages only for certain people. I used to have that on my landline PC-based voice mail using CID. Actually it occasionally had a business pupose as I could leave custom messages for clients. Since you can already record phone calls, it doesn't seem like it would be very difficult for a programmer to play a message and then start recording.
In the US, the voicemail systems use CID to allow you to return a call directly from voicemail, for example. Used to be that my carrier would send the CID with the voicemail notification SMS, which was handy, but they stopped now for some reason. How are things like that in Europe?
... So...if the incoming call is answered and recorded by the device, then you will pay for that. Net result--same cost. Actually it could cost more, because you could retrieve multiple voice mails in one call, but each call in would cost you at least a minute.

When the XDA receives the call and records it like the mailbox of the provider it won't cost me a Cent. Only the caller has to pay. Like the answering machine at home.
That thing with "...only let your best friends ring you normally and dump the rest to the voicemail..." would be nice too. Like the little proggi CALLERID where you can attach different pictures to different callerid's.

In Germany you don't pay for incoming calls to your cell phone?

YAP.
So what's to keep people from making a one-minute call just to say, "Call me back" and getting their calls free?
It's kinda amazing that this kind of software is not around (yet). Would be very cool to carry a pda+cellphone+answering_machine in one device. And it would save me the money my telco charges me for listening to my voicemails aswell!
Well Carlos
Well Carlos,
The caller pays the charge so it is never free. Actually in the UK, it does cost slightly more to call a mobile.
That's interesting to learn. Long ago when cellular was still analog here in the US and cost $0.35/minute, we had the option of having incoming caller pay services or not. The mobile user decided which to use. It was not very successful because of our antiquated phone systems compared to Europe's, and there were a number of ways to beat the system. All of that completely disappeared when Sprint PCS first launced at $75/1500 minutes and completely turned the cellular world upside-down.
I haven't seen any discussion of the main reason I would like this capability - to be able to listen to my messages while I'm on a plane. The answering machine idea wouldn't save me any money, but I'd love to be able to listen to messages when I'm out of range, in a bad building, or on a plane. I wish someone would develop this. I'd buy it.
Now that is finally a reason I can get behind. My travel schedule recently backed down to infrequent, but I don't know how many times I paid $2/minute to use an air phone in the last couple years, just to get my voice mail and make notes/tasks for call backs, etc.
Hear, hear.
There is another reason that I would like this. Every time someone leaves me a voice mail, T-Mobile sends me a SMS to tell me that. I only get so many SMS messages each month and I have to pay for them. If the bulk of my calls were received and recorded on the PDA, I wouldn't have this problem.
Another thing, sometimes I retrieve a voice mail and there's information in it that I have to take down. If I don't get it right, I can't go back and check the message again, unless I saved it, which I usually don't, and then it would cost me again to go back and listen to it again. I just like the idea of having the information locally, under my control. Then the fun things that could be done with caller ID and customized greetings would be icing on the cake.
Any programmers reading this? My son works for T-Mobile and he tells me that they are selling the PDA/phone like hotcakes. Now AT&T is selling it, too.
I'm 99% sure the voicemail notification SMS does NOT account against your allotment. Also, if you have GPRS, that gives you another 300 or 500 SMS messages per month.
I'm with you on the rest of it though.
Hi!
Just found something about the HP Jornada 928 Smartphone. It has an integrated answering machine.
Does anyone know if this is software or hardware?
Look at
http://h20015.www2.hp.com/en/document.jhtml?lc=en&docName=bpia2573
or
http://www.palmtopman.com/Pocket PC.htm
Interesting. That would be software, definitely. As usual, the Jornadas come with so much more bundled than most. I can't believe they're being dropped in favor of the crapPAQ.
So what would be the chances of being able to copy that program from the Jornada 928 and getting it to work on the XDA/T-Mobile?
Probably not high. I have tried to copy other extras off the Jornada 568 and I get a message saying that you cannot copy programs stored in ROM. So it's only possible if either the program also comes on the Jornada CD (worth a look) or someone knows how to get around the copy protection on the ROM.
I've looked at the list of software on the CD and it's not listed, but I don't have access to an actual CD. Anyone know how to copy this program from the 568 ROM?

[A] Google Voice Phone/mms Take over!

Remember when Google and Sprint went through that Integration a while back? Well this is where it takes affect!
If you Blindly Install Google Voice like many of you flashaholics do you probably misses an important but subtle step cause you the following issues:
1. All MMS/SMS are being handled through GV
2. All Out going phone calls are your GV#
3. Ass Acne
This is caused by you blindly agreeing to all of this and THIS wil tell you how to fix it (no ass acne solution yet... i think there is a tread in DEV section working on this)
1. UNINSTALL GOOGLE VOICE FROM YOUR PHONE
2. Jump on your computer (or use yoru phone if you can use the browser like that)
3. Go to Google.com/voice and sign in and jump to your Voice Settings
4. Now next to your number you want to click the DEACTIVATE SPRINT AND GOOGLE INTEGRATION (or something along those lines)
5. Back on your phone Download the GV app AND WAIT TO OPEN IT!!! YOU WANT TO READ THIS BEFORE YOU BLINDLY INSTALL AGAIN!!!!
6. Now when you first open the app THE FIRST screen you will be promted to integrate your sprint and google number...
7. "Tap 'Next' to complete the Sprint integration, or 'Skip' to complete the regular Google Voice setup."
8. I hope everyone who was complaining chose SKIP
9. Continue to install GV the way you remembered
10. ????
11. PROFIT
If you have any questions please PM or post it here
REMEMBER TO THANK IF THIS HELPED YOU!!!!
Or... Take the time to setup integration correctly and don't bother using the GV app any longer.
Seriously considering this myself. But I really like the integration... I was aware it did this since I had the same issues on my O.G. Evo. Google needs to just step up and make a way for us to turn off the MMS/Text. Or at the very least refine it because it handles them like garbage...
If you integrate using option 1 (Use your sprint number as your GV) and Don't use the GV app, then correct your settings on the GV site, you get MMS, etc, plus all the goodies of GV integration.
It seems to be working fine for me.
All sms is handled by the GV app and if I get any mms, it goes to the stock messaging app. Is that not what others are seeing?

Others want their stock text app to handle sms which it can if you tell Google Voice app to let text messages through.

No. Remember, you can use Google Voice integration even on phones that don't HAVE a Google Voice app. It really works server-side, and the app is just a client to the service they provide.
Yes but the thing that made the Sprint/Google voice integration unique was that you replaced your google voice number with your sprint number. You essentially only have one number now, which I like. If I deactivate this service, I'd have to go back to having two numbers, as far as I can tell. So that's the reason it's a tough decision for me, unless I'm totally missing something...
You can go through your desktop and turn off text through tv on your device.

I'm sorry but that doesn't make sense. Could you please clarify?
Sorry I meant gv. Go on the online gv page. And you can alter how your device receives texts. I thought mms cannot come through gv

I still can't get it to work the way I think most people including myself do.
I want to be able to have the voicemails downloaded directly to my phone meaning not just a text notification, not dialing my number to hear them, just pressing play to hear them. And I'd like them transcribed too.
And for the texts I want them to go to either my default texting app or another app of my chosing but not the GV app.
And I want to maintain the tight integration with my Sprint #, meaning Sprint # = my GV #. Someone lay out the steps to achieve this exactly and I'll gladly donate $10

There's a catch, as with anything. If you turn your sprint # into your GV number (option 1), you get MMS, you get SMS, you don't need the GV app, but it kinda ties to to sprint pretty much. If you ever change you're going to PAY to port your number IF you even can.
If you choose to use your GV number as your sprint number, (option 2) you'll lose MMS and the other drawback is billing. The unlimited mobile to mobile database is tied to prefixes so sprints lookup routines won't be able to figure this out and you'll use your minutes.
Seems like they only added option #2 for folks that gave out their GV number to everyone and not their cell. Fortunately I was NOT one of those that "fully" shared my GV number.
If you go option #1 for full integration, you'll lose your GV number as your sprint cell number becomes your new GV number. You'll have to set the settings that your number is ALSO a cell and to send texts to it from the GV website.
MMS and SMS will go right to whatever SMS program you choose to use (I use handcent) You will NOT want to install GV app on your phone at this point, but do make sure you set up the GV web to also text you or email you when you get a voicemail. <- important step, or you may not get any notices since that's what the GV app also does and you didn't install it.
How I have it setup is I have call groups, friend lists and time schedules.
Work and family in my list is allowed to call me after 11pm. Nobody else.
Work rings both my home phone and cell between 8-5:30 pm, then only my cell after that.
I also have 2 telemarketers blocked from the GV site as well.
GV is pretty powerful IF you use it and you configure it correctly. there are folks that hooked up VOIP devices that also share the same line where they can make/receive calls through that, all using the GV single line.
You will have a miserable time if you don't set it up correctly or just install the GV app and don't pay attention. <--- do NOT be this person!!!! hahahaa

This is pretty much where I am now. I decided that taking texts out of the GV app was more imporant than voicemail for now. The major drawback to this set up is that although you get a text notifying you of the voicemail, which will include a transcription, you can't actually listen to voicemail unless you are using the GV app or you call your own number and log in. Sprint's voicemail app will not pick it up
I've never played with the voicemail piece. Never used VVM either. I always just dial my number and enter my password (from the phone) or open it in my email.
BUT, I get like 1 voicemail message a month IF I'm lucky.
Can't direct you with voicemail. But to me, the other features are more important as my cell is also my work #.
Is there any way to get the GV app to display on the lockscreen like the stock SMS app does? The only problem I have with using the GV app is that I lose this functionality.
Ok I am that guy. I set up GV blindly and now I can not get any texts sms or mms and I can not make any phone calls or receive. I know I am an idiot for not reading but I did not realize that it was changed. Can anyone help, PLEASE?
Edit: Not sure what happend but after lossing all data I now have my phone back.

[Q] Is it possible to Spoof my personal CELL# while using EVO View Texting App???

Greetings Forum PEEPS!
Just a quick question... is it possible to SPOOF my personal line instead of my Sprint/EVO View #? Reason: As a Headhunter, I text my candidates ahead of calling/emailing them and I'd like to use my personal cell as my text number NOT my tablet #. Mainly for two reasons, I'm reaching out to people that may not be aware of me yet and I also don't want to confuse them with two separate #'s.
I have a 7-of-a-kind repeating phone number as my personal cell and it would be ideal to use that number.
Thank you for your help
Is your phone service with sprint? If so, you can enable Google tight integration and use Google voice. I send texts from my tablet all the time using my GV number.

Hello abhaxus,
I'd love to know the process as well. I too have Sprint service across all of my lines including my EVO View. I'm assuming you're saying using the texting feature via the Google Voice app? But NOT the Sprint stock messaging app. But is it possible to spoof the number that's assigned to the VIEW or ideally change the number in the settings somewhere. My main concern is if I send a text, I may get a call to the VIEW's # when I'd rather have it come to other Sprint phone (or the VIEW once I configure it to receive calls).
I'd really love to also be able to use the VIEW to make/receive calls... I'm going to do a search on these forums before I ask ?'s on that.
Thank you for your help
Basically, if you input your mobile number (for forwarding) as a Sprint phone number with Google Voice, it asks if you would like to integrate the services. If you say yes, you can use your Sprint phone number as your google voice number. Then when you use the google voice app to text, it will send the message as your Sprint number. Allows you to carry on text conversations across multiple devices.
This goes along with all the other benefits of GV. Make sure you set up screening also, which is a great feature if you use it for business. It will screen calls to your sprint number based on whether the person calling is in your contacts or not. No more "who the hell is this?" when you look at your phone

Here's how to get started

[Q] Google Voice integration w/ GV as primary number

Hi,
I've got a question about to how to set up my google voice (configuration) with my upcoming andriod phone.
I'm an Iphone user moving into andriod (I've snagged an LG nexus 4 and will be using that in the near future).
My current setup (I am out of my 2 year contract) is that I have a monthly minutes and data plan. I do not have a texting plan.
I mostly use my google voice number to text over data/wifi.
The problem with this of course is that this requires giving people two numbers and most people have my old original cell phone number and they'll need to remember which number to text (a remarkably hard task, even in this modern age of technology and mobile internet because people are still content to pay for texting plans)
.
I plan to port my cell phone number (because I'm out of contract) into my google voice. I will also open a new line with my carrier (to maintain my cell phone service). I will not giving out the number to my new line to anybody. This allows me to manage all calls (screen, block, etc directly from google voice which I really enjoy) and I will not have to notify my contacts that I've changed my number. I would like to keep my original google voice number as well.
As I see it, I have 2 options.
1) Port my cell phone number into my current google voice account (effectively having 2 numbers in 1 google account - this costs 20 dollars to port and 20 dollars to keep the original GV number - 40 dollars total)
2) Port my number into another google account, leaving me to use 2 google acounts, and use 2 different google voice applications for texting (only 20 dollars for 1 port). This would also force me to set my (new cellular) number (new line which I've opened because my old line will be ported) as a work or home number - because google does not allow you to link your mobile number to two different voice accounts.
This chart was tremendously helpful in helping me figure out that the native andriod texting application is not "fully integrated" with google voice. It more or less functions much like the default Iphone's messaging app (not what I expected).
http://i.stack.imgur.com/zW9Os.png
Therefore my questions are
1) How well does andriod's native phone integrate with google voice?
The first question might answer the rest:
2) Will I be able to use the default phone application to manage all my numbers (dialing, voicemail etc). Or will I possibly need to use multiple applications.
3) Will I be able to use visual voicemail from the default app? )
4) Will I be able to use my phone to place an outgoing call from my google voice number using hands-free (bluetooth, etc)
5) Are there any other better viable alternatives?
Sorry if this is a bit wordy and messy.
Thanks for your help.

Google voice alternative for small business - call AND text feature

Hey guys. I run a small business locally and have been using GV exclusively for that for the past 4 years. Recently I have been having issues and realized that they are going to be pulling it offline at some point in the near future. So I want to figure out what I am going to do. Here are the features that I MUST have:
- Calling using carrier's minutes (not VOIP) but to where it will still show up on the receiver's end your business number (GV does this by call forwarding I think, when you call out using GV it calles google and they re-route your phone call to the number you were trying to reach)
- Texting ability (mms would be nice but not a necessity)
- Custom voicemail
I just downloaded Text Free by Pinger from the play store and it seems to work ok, but I think it uses VOIP (not sure?)
I don't mind paying for one if I need to. Do you guys have any recommendations?
TextPlus.
good
thanks for your good post
