OmniRom install from recovery? - Galaxy S III Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I just almost bricked my phone by trying to update CM on my phone with an install that didn't download completely.
I tried flashing the newest omnirom but that resulted in the same thing - phone booting, restart, boot into recovery.
It was obvious I had to reinstall CM so I did that and now its working but I am done with CM (due to broken tether and hotspot functions) and seeking a replacement.
So, was the broken boot after omnirom install happened due to the previous install failure or I just can't flash omni via recovery?

[Q] CM10.1 Nightly's stuck on boot animation

I've been running the Cyanogen Mod 10.1 nightly's and yesterday my tablet crashed and rebooted but would not go past the boot animation. I tried restarting it many time but it only boots to the animation. I booted into bootloader mode and wipted everything and tried installing an older nightly and the wingray gapps. It still is stuck not booting up only showing the spinning boot animation. Anyone have any ideas on what I can do? Any help would be greatly appreciated
Is there a way to update to a working rom though odin? I can't figure out how to do that.
Guys I installed the latest nightly, except for the keyboard problem, the resolution seems to be wrong: the writing in fact are blurred. is it a known problem?

Yes, you can use odin to flash a rom, but it must be a stock rom, after which you will need to root your device again, install CWM recovery and then flash the nightly again. To use odin, you will need to put the device in download mode connect to the pc after activating odin and when the device is recognised (one of the boxes will light up in yellow) then put the extracted firmware in PDA of odin and click start. If successful, a green PASS will show in odin. Disconnect the device and wait for the device to boot up. You can try ICS 4.0.4 which is commonly available in Samsmobile.

Mine just died too. Went back to stock 4.0.4

For the bootloop, you can try to Wipe Cache/Dalvik.
But honestly, every new update that is pushed out, it's harder for our tabs to manage. So unstable to keep it up-to-date with every version, haha.
Thanks! I'll be going back to stock when I return home from work. Does anyone know where I can get CM 9 or 10 nightlies or stable ROM?

[Q] Problems booting any ROMS

Hi all,
I've been on the CM 10.1 nightlies for some time now, but wanted to try out CM 10.2. I'm on the ICS bootloaders and was using TWRP 2.6.0.0. After wiping everything but the SD card, and attempting to install 10.2, I've had nothing but bad luck with any ROM I try to install. I can install and boot 10.2 Diamond ROM by AAcount, but as soon as I try to connect to wifi I reboot and get stuck at the CM animation. Any other rom (4.2.2 or 4.3) I try to install can't get passed the Samsung logo or the initial CM animation. I've wiped, reflashed bootloaders, tried CWM 6.0.3.6 and had to resort to adb sideloading my ROM's since I kept getting "failed" messages when trying to install the ROM from the tablet directly.
Does anyone know what I can do to help fix this? (At this point I just want ANYTHING to load/work)
I have the P4WIFI model.
Update 1:
One of the error messages I get when trying to install via TWRP -
"E:Unable to open zip file.
Error flashing zip '/sdcard/Download/gapps-jb-20130813-signed.zip'"
And via adb sideload -
"failed to write data 'protocol fault (no status)'"

Last time I experienced something like that, the culprit was inadequate memory. Take a look at that.
Secondly, when you said you wiped everything, hope it includes formatting system under Mounts and Storages. If it doesn't then you need to do it for a clean installation.
Cheers.

No, had an issue just flashing in general. I'm not sure how/why, but I wiped my entire internal SD and managed to install DiamondROM + PA Gapps and was able to boot up.

[Q] No wifi or radio e970

SOLVED: Used TWRP instead of CWM to flash.
I flashed [ROM][KRT16M] AOSP Google Android KitKat 4.4 GEEB [Nov.2] using CWM and my ATT LG e970 has no cellular or wifi now.
stock rom rooted and unlocked using freegee
backed up stock 4.1.2 using cwm
I went into recovery and cleared system cache and dalvik cache.
flashed the rom
flashed the gapps
flashed SuperSU
rebooted and saw 4.4 launcher.
tried to turn on wifi and did not work.
no cellular signal from ATT either
I tried rebooting it and it displays the stylized android logo for greater than 2 minutes before the screen flashes and boots into the lock screen still without wifi or cellular.
help.
EDIT: I was digging trough the thread and it said that CWM6.0.3.8 had conflicts with SuperSU that led to no service
I restored my nandroid backup and my phone works fine.
What can I use to flash [ROM][KRT16M] AOSP Google Android KitKat 4.4 GEEB [Nov.2]? TWRP and how do I get it? Trough ROM Manager?
Use TWRP instead of CWM.

Yea, I guess CWM is my problem. I flashed Houstonn's stock PA and it had the same no cellular problem. I will try to install TWRP and flash instead.
Thanks.
EDIT: How do I install TWRP using fastboot? I installed CWM via ROM Manager and that was easy, but I can't find a working installer for TWRP. How do I install using fastboot command from my PC? Do I need to install anything?
EDIT: Installed TWRP
Well, I installed TWRP 2.6.3.0 using fastboot from my PC.
Did backup to external sd card.
Flashed PA and BanKs 4.3 Gapps.
Factoryreset/clearcache and cleared dalvik before and after every flash.
Now my camera works, unlike before when I flashed on CWM 6.0.3.8 where the camera would just crash. "About Phone" now shows the phone's IMEI.
Unfortunately I cannot get service. ATT is detected but it is stuck on registration.
There is a version of twrp that acardinal posted in his slim bean 4.3 thread (they're testing a 4.4 skim bean alpha), it's recommended for v4.4...not sure if the updated twrp is recommended or required. Might be worth looking into.
There is also an updated boot loader in Houstonn's 4.4 geeb thread...don't know if it'd be of help or not.
At minimum I'd bring up your issue in Houstonn's thread. Maybe one of those folks has seen your issue.
Have you tried flashing any radios?

Thanks for the help. This time, I used TWRP instead of CWM to flash and then I rebooted the phone a couple of times and it now works fine.
Guess it was just CWM causing issues with all my rom flashes.

Z Ultra togari Mac Address Issues

I know this has been mentioned elsewhere for other Xperia Models, typically newer than the Z U, but I am running in to an issue where my two z ultras are trying to use the same mac address.
I wondered if there was a device specific work around for the z ultra and / if this is being addressed.
Running the latest nightly CM12 builds.
Cheers in advance.

Download this zip and flash, it is a fix for when the mac address changes after flashing a custom rom.
Regards
Hi,
Thanks for the post, but unfortunately I am getting a package verification error and a footer error when I attempt to flash the package in recovery.
You are using cyanogenmod recovery, right? If so, you have to use TWRP or CWM to flash it, cm recovery have signature check and you can't turn it off, all custom recoveries have it disabled by default.
Regards
Thanks for the heads up teddy. I was using CM recovery. Installed TWRP and flashed the zip/update. However, CM12 goes tits up with TWRP every time I update CM12 and only seems to play nice with CM recovery. Gapps seems to be the issue with none stop force stops. Seems in order for this to work I have to flash TWRP, flash the mac address zip and then flash CM recovery back every time I want to update via nightly.
You can flash TWRP to the FOTAKernel partition if you don't want to flash it everytime you update rom and if you flash it, it should work like CM recovery and it will be booting instead of CM recovery. Just download an app called Rashr and install TWRP from the app I assume the fix is working for you, isn't it?
Regards
I did use rashr to install TWRP and that's when the issues arose.
Unfortunately the nightly update came through after installing TWRP so I did the update for 30th and the phone was in an unusable state via gapps force closes as mentioned. So I flashed back to CMr via the update and haven't installed the update yet.
Until I have a workable solution to the recovery issue I won't be proceeding. It will be too much hassle each time the updates arrive.
I don't think that gapps are force closing because of the recovery installed, that would be weird. Have you tried flashing another gapps? Because I have also used CM12 with TWRP and gapps and I haven't got that sort of problems, even now I am using CyanideL (CM12-based) with TWRP and on my configuration it is OK. I will try using CM12 nightlies with TWRP tomorrow and I will write you back if I found a solution
Regards
Yes, I was using the signed gapps dated late last year, but when I came across the issue I reflashed the whole of CM12 with the more recent ones dated April I think. I still had the same problem, which is when I read up and saw it was attributed to using a non-CM recovery and reset everything back to CM12 nightly + CMr, I did however keep the most recent gapps. Let me know how you get on.
