[Q] 'update from external storage' missing - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi to all,
I have Samsung Galaxy S2 (GT-I9100G) which is running Android Version 2.3.6 (Gingerbread).
I'm trying to root it via a zip file in an external SD card but as soon as I press VOLUME+POWER OFF/ON + MIDDLE BUTTON)
I go to the android environment but I do not get the option 'update from external storage'....
Do you have any idea ???
Thanks in advance !! / Yiannis

Do u have Custom Recovery or Stock?
I think you have to flash a custom Recovery, or try the App Framaroot to Root your phone, then u dont need a new recovery.

Framaroot not working....

Thanks but unfortunately is not working....
I mean I have not flashed custom recovery but I have tried the other solution with App Framaroot but unfortunately is not working
(exploit fault code 6).
My problem is that device memory of my S2 is almost full (180 MB) left and after search, I have seen 2 solutions :
1) Type *#9900# and after 2nd option (Delete dumpstate/logcat) -> Not working for me....Grrrrr
2) Clear logs under /Data/Logs _> you should have a root phone which is not my case....
Trying to root with different methods, I have not found solution for my Build number : GINGERBREAD.XXLB1
Any other suggestion is more than welcome !!!
Thanks again !!

Root from sd?

hi there
my USB port is broken
i want to root my phone via sd card, it is possible ?
iam on orange UK 2.3.3 BVKG3
i just need to root it
cheers
If you first update to ICS somehow (OTA?), yes.
Although i seen something similar to that (flash a .zip file using stock recovery to gain root) i haven't seen someone around s2 forum make a .zip like that. I have seen low end devices gain root by flashing .zip files through stock recovery like Galaxy Ace, Optimus Me and Galaxy Y.

Yes it can be done. I've done it myself on SGSII and it works fine. See this thread for details:

He's still on GB. That only works for ICS.

Doesn't Mobile Odin require root in the first place to run? His phone is currently unrooted, unless that status has changed.

I do have a theory... but it will involve you upgrading to ICS while you're at it. You'll also have to wipe your device, which will remove all your apps/contacts/etc, but should leave all your pictures/movies/music/etc. I am not sure if it will work or not, as I haven't actually tried it myself.
You'll need an external SD card for this.
- Download CWM Recovery for the Galaxy S2 from the ClockworkMod website and put in on your external SD card.
- Download one of wanam's stock ICS ROMs that are CWM flashable from his thread and put it on your external SD card.
- reboot to recovery
- do a full wipe (data/factory reset)
- choose "apply update from external storage"
- find and select the recovery image downloaded in the first step, and wait for CWM recovery to appear
- choose "install from sdcard"
- find and select the ROM you downloaded in the second step
Once this last step is done, I believe you'll need to reboot. The advantage of this is though all the ROMs in wanam's thread are all stock, they are ALSO rooted. So you'll both upgrade to ICS and root your device simultaneously.
Again, this is a theory, but I don't see why this wouldn't work. (of course, someone please point out anything I didn't think of that would prevent this from working the way I envisioned it)
not working for me nothing, as CWM zip file cannot be instaled from stock recovery
there is signature problem
i already downloaded touch version too without luck

Well, it was only a theory. Sorry.

[Q] im confused why i dont have root ??

ok im a real noob .. but trying to learn ! i have a problem that i cant solve . i had a root on my phone untill it updated some months ago to 4.0.4 then i lost some of the root . i have titanium back up which works but seem to have a problem with superuser. i do have the insane chip in my phone as i checked with eMMC check . last night i uploaded CWM.zip to the external sd card then flashed siyah-s2-v4.1.5 cwm.zip and re booted my phone. i checked in the " about phone " and indeed the kernel had changed. BUT when i ran root checker pro .. it says i dont have root ?
i will type what it says...... superuser application status: supeuser application - version 3.1.3 is installed !
superSU application- version 0.99 is installed
system file properties for root access
standard location
check command: is -l /system/bin/su:
result: - rwsr-sr-x 1 root root 22228 Mar 14 2012 /system/bin/su
Analysis: setuid attribute present and root ownership present. root access is correctly configured for this file ! Executing this this file can grant root access!
alternative location
check command: Is - I /sbin/su:
result: Is: / system/xbin/sudo: no such file or directory
analysis: File /system/xbin/sudo does not exsist
Root user ID and group ID status
SU binary not found or not operating properly
System Environment path : / sbin / vendor/bin/ system /sbin/ system /xbin
ADB shell default user
ADB shell setting for standard access. stored,in default prop. is configured as : shell (non root) user - ro. secure=1
hope this make sense to somebody and they can help me . a couple of point though first .. is my phone now "safe" from the brick bug ? by flashing it with the new kernel ? and if i can fix this problem with the root .. again my phone is safe as i now have a different kernel ? i thought that when i flashed this kernel last night my phone would root aromatically ?? but i guess not ! please can anyone help and give me a noob guide on what i need to do to sort all this out ,,
thanks a million
You could try flashing that kernel(but get .tar version) through Odin and see if it rooted.
yes, your phone is safe from the brick bug with siyah kernal. As siyah has disabled the bug in his kernal.
Your phone is rooted but root checker will not always work with custom kernals.
In Siyah case he has totally revamped the kernal, so that the method root checker uses may not be able to see the modifications properly, thus giving a false reading.

well i have just tried to download font changer lite .. the message i get is superuser required ! it says superuser accsess was not found on your device .? if i have root why am i getting this message ? anyone know ? i think i have a problem with superuser .. its on my phone from months ago but since my phone updated to 4.0.4 i seem to have lost part of it ? any fix for this
cheers guys
method 1. delete superuser apk from phone and reflash siyah kernal, it should install and updated superuser.
if that does not work. delete superuser apk and download superuser apk from playstore and use recovery to flash it.

You can't delete it because you have no root access you need to root your phone normally and it will update it if the rooting introduces supersu then via root explorer delete the superuser apk.
Using GT - I9100
I thank those who give helpful comments
I expect the same from others.

If it is not installed authomatically from playstore.
find where playstore downloaded it to check the download folder, if it is there follow these instructions.
Next turn off phone.
Press Volume up + home Key + power all at the same time, it will boot you up into recovery mode.
click on install update from sdcard
using the volume keys navigate where you download the file to. It should be in be in the download folder.
click on file using the power key for yes or home key depending on which version of recovery you have.
say yes again it should then install.
after installation completed click on go back till you reach the first screen.
press reboot system and the phone will power up normally check to see if you have a working superuser app.

Is this what you are trying to say ?
your reflashed siyah and then tried to download superuser from playstore but was nt successful.
then you tried to install it from titantium back up it is not working but it is not working now.
Then you were rooted but superuser was not working properly, now it is not working at all.
go into recovery try doing the following : clean cache, go to advanced clean daavik cache, reboot and see if that fixes the problem.
if not we can try a factory reset.

You can back up contacts to sim card, and sms with app Sms backup and restore from Play store.
Factory reset will wipe everything except your internal memory (the 11gb one) any system ofc.

do you think that flashing siyah kernel via odin would work better than doing it via CWM ? or shouldn't it make any difference ? i have the CWM app on my phone .. so every time i go into download mode it goes into CWM .. so i cant use odin . is there anyway of getting rid of CWM once installed ? i have deleted it from memory card but it didnt make any difference its still there. or should i just do the factory reset ?

thanks for that .. just flashed with odin too and still i don't have root ? do you think a factory reset is my only option now ?
well i did a factory reset .. and nothing has changed ? so now i am confused !!! anybody have any idea why i cant root this phone ? PLEASE
Try this
Download a non wipe stock ROM and flash it via Odin and then root that ROM using a rooted kernel like CF via Odin again.
Also did you unroot before you updated to 4.0.4 via OTA?

Umm you can download CWM Recovery for your device from HERE
Then press "Install Zip From SD Card" in Stock Recovery, and you will get into CWM Recovery by installing that zip.
After that flash the zip I gave you, and there will be no Signature Verification problems (It is a typical problem for Stock Recovery, no worries). By default, CWM should have Signature Verification disabled, but if it isn't you can easily disable it in the menu.
You're on Stock 3E recovery right?
Download this : http://www.androidfilehost.com/?fid=9390233485161005747
Put it in your external SDCard
And flash it in recovery. It's signed so it should work.
If it doesn't, get a temporary CWM from here : http://bit.ly/12SfdWY

You can root this by using Ubuntu.
1. adb devices , to check for connected device
2. adb root , to gain root
3. adb shell, to check if you get root sign #. then exit
4 load SuperuserAndFullBackup.zip and extract to any folder. then
5. use adb push to push all files in /system/* to it destination
6. adb shell go into device
7. chown and chmod like permission in updater-script.

:fingers-crossed: The absolute best rooting package I’ve found is CF Root 6.4 (although I know Chainfire isn’t backing or updating anymore (it’s there’s)), It will root every Galaxy S3 i9300 firmware there is, well every firmware update that I’ve put on my phone including custom ROMS and there have been many. It will install SU App, and CWM recovery (albeit an older version) and does it EVERY TIME. It’s awesome. Being that it's a clone, who knows if it will work, anyways give it a go.
Quick ? How were you running Android 4.3 when it just came out 5 days ago & not even officially available for the S3. Just curious but correct me if i'm wrong
cf root wont work for it. It is not Samsung phone. it is just a clone cheap clone. I don't believe it is 4.3.

1) Tried around 8 - 10 one click root software, like Unlock root, Kingo, Vroot, SRS root, One click root, rescue root, etc. But all failed.
2)Tried flashing custom recovery CWM for S6272 from various sources using Odin, dint work. Because when ever the phone reboots after the flash it reloads stock recovery. I even tried to root my device through cydia impactor but it says signature bugs unavailable....

just download this firmware and flash it through Odin...its pre rooted...you just need to extract and flash this firmware....just search the web "S7262 Root Firmware" but make sure to turn on the usb debugging mode and to install the latest Samsung usb driver which is Samsung USB Driver for Mobile Phones 1.5.45.0 (July 2014) before flashing !
After flashing the firmware just search for the supersu app in app drawer

Install Apps like Titanium backup which needs root privilege at start when you open and further you can verify if your device is rooted !!

Try framaroot again and see if it works. There was a Q&A part explaining your scenario where "Framaroot say Success but SuperSU is not installed after reboot".
Update: After using the search function, I found the CF- auto root designed for your firmware: http://download.chainfire.eu/24/CF-Root/SGS2/CF-Root-SGS2_XW_CLK_KF3-v4.0-CWM4.zip
Instructions - ODIN (long)
- Follow these instructions to the letter. Do not touch any buttons or checkboxes that are not listed below to touch!
- Unzip the attached CF-Root-xxx-vX.X.zip
- (USB) Disconnect your phone from your computer
- Start ODIN
- Click the PDA button, and select CF-Root-xxx-vX.X.tar
- Put your phone in download mode
- (USB) Connect the phone to your computer
- Make sure repartition is NOT checked
- Click the START button
- Wait for the phone to reboot
- Done (if it took you more than 30 seconds, you need practise!)
Thanks. I downloaded the CF-Auto root. And it works. My next question is: Can i "install" Cyagonenmod or something? For a newer Android Version. Or should i dont do it?

You will have to install a kernel with a custom recovery (such as philz kernel). Then you will be able to install custom roms.

Okay. But which should i install and is there a tutorial? I'm a beginner in this so i Need help ^^
EDIT: With custom recovery you mean CWM? If it is so then it's installed with that CF-Auto root data.

Yes, cwm is a custom recovery. The included cwm on cf auto-root is quite old and won't allow you to install kitkat and some jelly bean roms. You can always try

The easiest way to get kitkat rom and get new recovery is to use cyanogenmod installer. Then it would be much easier to install other roms of your choice.
OK does it work with dat cf auto root? And is there a link and tutorial?

Lol. To get cyanogenmod installer, go to get.cm on your phone's browser then follow on screen instructions, that's it. The installer actually doesn't need any root as it will install root anyway (in this case, you will keep root). Be sure to backup! Happy flashing

I installed it. But then the installer want to download "operating System" and after 5 min or something it says : Download failed. We were unable to download CyanogenMod for your device. Please check your Network Connection and try again.

Must be a problem with the firewall. I can teach you the manual way then, but it is definitely harder. Don't worry, I will guide you through;
I guess you are on gingerbread so follow my guide carefully:
Recovery navigation:
Up and down - Volume button
Select - Power key
1. Download the latest snapshot of cyanogenmod 11 onto your phone's storage here: https://download.cyanogenmod.org/get/jenkins/90770/cm-11-20141115-SNAPSHOT-M12-i9100.zip
2. (Optional) Download the compatible gapps file onto your phone's storage here: http://itvends.com/gapps/gapps-kk-20140105-signed.zip
3. Download the latest philz recovery onto your phone's storage here: https://goo.im/devs/philz_touch/CWM_Advanced_Edition/i9100/philz_touch_6.48.4-i9100.zip
4. Reboot your phone into recovery (turn off phone, then press power button, up and home button all together until you see the samsung logo)
5. You should now see the recovery, select flash a zip
6. Select Internal sd card or ext sd card (if these are not on the menu, sd card 0 = internal sd card, etc)
7. Select philz recovery zip
8. Confirm to flash
9. Return to main menu
10. Go to advanced
11. Select reboot to recovery. Your phone should reboot back into the new recovery
12. Once back into the new recovery, select factory reset. Your phone will now delete all of your apps!
13. Then select wipe cache partition.
14. Then go to advanced, then select wipe dalvik cache.
15. Go back to the main menu
16. Select Flash a zip
17. Select the storage location that you used for your downloads
18. Locate and select the cyanogenmod .zip file and confirm to flash
19 (Optional)Select gapps .zip file and confirm to flash
20. Return to main menu
21. Select reboot device
The first boot may take long so be patient. If it doesn't bootloop, you have successfully flashed a rom onto your device!
Ok just a question does it work with may CF-Auto root? It has the CWM 4.0.0.2 . So i'm just carefull cause i dont want to brick my phone ^^
