I have a rooted Nook tablet so not a complete noob, but how safe is the root process for a verizon Galaxy s4? I'd like to root it so I can get rid of some of the junk apps and install others I want, but I void my two yr warranty...thoughts from the experts? just want to feel comfortable moving forward and if so, is there a set of clear instructions somewhere?
Thanks to all

Instead of an asinine comment that does you no go, here's some info.
Yes, rooting will void the warranty. However, you can always Odin to go back to stock should you have an issue that requires returning your phone to VZW.
I've rooted both my old S3 and my current S4. I JUST started rooting on the S3, so I'm relatively new as well but have learned a lot. My S3 was stock rooted, but I took the plunge with my S4 and am running HyperDrive ROM which is HOLY MOLY sweetness.
It's up to you, but if you're going to root, perhaps look at the ROMs that are available and flash one. I'm not sorry that I started flashing Roms. Not one bit

Three replies thus far and yours is the only one of solid benefit..thanks. Can you point me anywhere to see step by step to accomplish what you did on your S4?

Here is the link to root: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2290798
How old is your S4? The reason that I ask is that there was an OTA update the broke root. Currently there are Dev's looking into how to root with the new firmware.
Have you installed the OTA update?
Phone is about a month old...I have made no changes to the existing phone so I don.t know about the OTA update (although the VW software that came with it appears to update the phones software when plugged into laptop)

Go to ->Setting->More->About Phone and tell me what you Baseband version says. If it's VRUAME7, you have the OTA update. If it's VRUAMDK, you do not.

Unfortunately you will not be able to root until a new method becomes available.
is it possible to back up to pre-OTA update status?

No.....there is no way to uninstall the update. Patience, young rooting grasshopper! A new method will be out shortly, I would imagine. Doesn't usually take too long,
Much appreciated...and lastly can you point me to how I would reinstall what you refer to as Odin should I screw up a future root process?

This link explains how to go back to stock by using Odin: http://www.sxtpdevelopers.com/showthread.php?t=237

I'm also curious about theandroidsoul.com/universal-root-de-la-vega-script/. I can follow those instructions, but I'm new to Android and I don't want to inadvertently brick my phone since I'd probably have a hard time fixing it.
Here you go below is the link you will to follow to get root in MJ7

Unfortunately for me, I swear I followed the instructions in that post to the letter, but after the update was applied I lost root. I'm sure I screwed up somewhere because everyone else says it works. But anyway, I was hoping for a way to get it back.

Sorry but just to clarify, you were already on MJ7 and you were able to achieve root on a Verizon S4 using the link that vladimirtm posted?
If so that's great news for me! :fingers-crossed:

Only works if you have yet to take the OTA.
Once you take the OTA and have not followed the instruction, you need to grab a seat and wait for a root method.
Is there no way to roll back and root on 4.2?

Why do you guys take the update, when the last two updates have already broke root? There's not always going to be a root exploit to be found...

This has been asked and answered hundreds of times on this forum.
There is no way to downgrade to an older version.
You WILL soft-brick your phone if you try it.
Even so, there's already people who upgraded to MJ7 and tried to install the MI1 root and watched their phone brick.
And there's no way for them to recover since there's no factory install image for MJ7 yet.

Sorry -incorrect thread.
Hi guys it's been a while since I've been on here. I have a quick question. I know the S4 bootloader can't be unlocked yet. Which is fine with me..but I found this thread to root it but it says not to do it if I accepted the OTA update. How do I know if I have the update? I did update my phone the other day but now it's asking for me to do it again. So I am think I don't have the latest update. I just want to root my phone to take out all this samsung and verizon crap it comes with. Hopefully when the bootloader is able to be unlocked I can start flashing custom roms. If anyone could help me out here that would be awesome. Here's the thread that I was going to follow.

There are separate OTA updates to get you from MDK to ME7, ME7 to MI1, and MI1 to MJ7. You'll get prompted for each of these as there's no way to skip an update.
To find out what you're running, Settings, More, About Phone. Look at the Build number field.

That depends on what you want to do. Updating to MI1 will still allow you root, but no custom recovery.
There's no big advantage there, but MI1 will allow you to update to MJ7 and keep root, which is perhaps worthwhile as that's 4.3.
I find my GS4 to be a lot faster on MJ7 so it was worth it. But only you can decide what's best.

But the bootloader is still locked and I cant flash any custom roms yet right? And MJ7 is the newest update that is out???
Thanks
If you're on ME7 you can install safestrap to flash TW roms, but no AOSP. There's no point to upgrade to MI1 if that's what you want to do, because there's certain kernel issues using MI1 with safestrap. If you want to be on 4.3 rooted and don't care about flashing, then are safe methods to update firmware and keep root. Just follow the guides in their respective threads.

Will CF auto root would it be able to root android 5.0.1. I really do not care about the Samsung knots being trigger my phone is already out of warranty. I just have insurance if it gets stolen or I drop it in water. Or should I wait until they find a root method without triggering Samsung knots. I read about triangle away but like I said at this point I can careless if it gets trigger. What are you guys opinion?
The first rule of XDA is - Search.

As of now, if you took the OTA and did not preserve root, there is no root method available. Also, "Knox"

Fyi...... @dgutierrez04 was the guy that pulled the OC1 ota update for me when no one else could due to the two part 5.0 update. He also took one for the team during testing of the OC1, Stock Rooted ROM so many of you enjoy today by updating his bootloader to OC1.
I assume he has no backup phone.
That said, it seems a lot of people have to use Kies... as Odin reports fails...
I did not root my I545 verizon so now I have lollipop oc1. My question is should I not take the next upgrade for lollipop or at this point does it make a difference as far as getting root?
Thoughts are more than welcome

No I do not have a backup phone. But hey that's how we learn. I will do it again for the community if I can capture again the update and test it for everyone I would. I am a te player. I wish I could built roms but I'm not that smart lol.

I suggest is to wait and hope they can find a root method and try to avoid future updates as off right now. That's what I would suggest you doing as for me I will be doing the same.

Neither am I(smart enough for a ROM build). As much as I love Unix, it isn't a full time playground. Still loving Visual Basic and batch...
I've been reading all over the forum but it's difficult to find a definitive answer. I have the AT&T version on 4.4.2, I527UCUBNJ2. I'm not looking for a custom recovery or ROM as I'm pretty sure no progress was ever really made on that. What I'm curious about is whether or not this build can be rooted. I'm not worried about tripping KNOX, I just want to make sure that by (attempting) to gain root I don't make a big brick.
