[Q] S4 Wifi won't turn on after custom ROM - Verizon Samsung Galaxy S 4

So I flashed the FoxHound ROM (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2596654) found there today on my SCH-i545 Verizon Galaxy S4. I flashed it with SafeStrap, and everything works beautifully except for my WI-fi. It absolutely won't turn on no matter what I do. I heard something about a wpa config file, I tried renaming it and rebooting so a new one gets made. There's a Wi-Fi fixing option in the FoxHound settings, but all it does it download files that I have no clue what to do with. I'm very new to this stuff. How do I fix it?

You have to flash the safestrap modules that match your boot loader after you flash the ROM and before you boot. Wi-Fi won't work without them.
If you don't understand go back to the safestrap thread and read the entire OP.

I am having the same problem with hyperdrive. Wifi wasnt working on the stock rom either. This is my first time trying custom roms. Could you please give me more info on how to flash the safestrap modules? Nothing was mentioned about it in the thread.

Thanks for the help!

It explains this in the SafeStrap thread.

Like Josh said, you just flash the kernel modules after you flash the ROM before you leave recovery. Match up your modules to whatever your build is , MJ7, MK2 etc...

When flashing, it said no MD5 found. What does that mean, and what should I do?

Recoveries can check the md5's of whatever files your flashing. It's just a way to see if the file is still in tact and what it's supposed to be... If your on SafeStrap I think there's an option in there to turn off md5 verification under advanced maybe. I check md5's prior to flashing either on my PC or an app on the phone. I don't bother while in recovery. That's just me though

A few questions about flashing roms

I just bought a DNA and it currently has viper rom 1.2.0 on it. It is rooted, but is s-on, I really don't know if it has CWM or even how to tell? I am using straight talk on it and cant seem to get MMS to work, but it looks like Virtuous rom works with straight talk MMS. I am really not sure where I need to pick up on one of these guides just to flash a rom. Is that all I need to do to get it switched over? Sorry if these questions are easy/noob I really would rather just not brick this phone =)
Look in the general section and the original development sections for guides and pretty much any phone forum for guides. They will do a better job of explaining than me. You cant have a custom kernel on viper 1.2 and it for sure either has CWM or TWRP.
If you are s on, you have to download the zip of the Rom or kernel you want. Next, download flash gui on the market. Select the Rom or zip and it will flash the boot image. On a kernel, extract the modules and flash in recovery. For Roms, flash the zip after you flash the boot.img. try all that out, then look in the original development section for rooting and s-off. Hope this helps!

Download the "tweakker" app from the market as well. It solves many mms issues across roms.

Alright, I have a few additional questions then I guess, I have the Virtuous rom downloading, as well as the flash gui app. You say flash the zip after i flash the boot.img. I'm not sure exactly what you mean when you say that? Do I need to download an additional file or will the boot.img file show up in fastboot after I flash it with the gui app? Am I correct in that I should just be able to flash the virtuous rom without needing to flash a kernel also?

It probably comes with a stock kernel and you can flash your own if its NOT based on 2.04.

It is NOT 2.04, I made very sure of that when buying it after I bought the first one that was =x, luckily I got a killer deal on each of these so I'll make money reselling the 2.04 one.

He was talking about the rom, not your phone. If the rom us based off 2.04, such as viper, you can't flash a custom kernel.

No mobile data on any rom w/ safestrap mj7

Ive been searching for 3 days and dont know what the problem is. Im on mj7 with safestrap 3.71. I can flash roms in slot 1 and they boot fine. Everything works except I cant get any mobile data. Ive tried flashing mkj module files but it doesnt make a difference. Thanks!!
Are you Verizon? Do you mean mk2? Or is that a build from another carrier?

And also quick question... You're saying that on your stock slot..running stock mk2 you DO have data? Just trying to rule out possible Sim card problem.

Sorry guys. Im on build mj7 on verizon. The stock slot works perfectly with data. Ive tried several tw roms and even flashed them in the stock slot and I get no mobile data. Ive tried stock kernel, kt kernel, flashing the mj7 modules, and reflashing the modem. I can only get mobile data with the factory flashed odin rom.
I did a twrp restore of m1a3 rom into slot 1 and did get mobile data. Im obviously missing some kind of file. I just dont know what it is. Here is the link of the ss restored rom that worked.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2612862
If I flash the same rom and modules I dont get data.

Just a side note since your using safestrap unless I've missed something new in the past week.. You can only run the stock kernel. And since your on mj7 you'd only be able to flash TW ROMs based off of mj7 or mk2 using your mj7 modules. I'm not 100% right now where you're problem lies.
Flashing to the stock slot is risky and unfortunately sometimes the only remedy is to Odin back to stock and start again making sure you're using the correct ROM , modules.

I figured. Seems like you have a handle on all that. You said earlier you were trying different kernels... Last I know trying to flash a different kernel wouldn't even do much because of the security on that phone... And I wouldn't think that'd mess you're data up but you never know. The data should work right out the box for you on hyperdrive.

I'm still at a loss. Can someone tell me what files are needed to provide mobile data access?
@maniac2k
I don't know.. Maybe look into the settings you get into from the dialer to check and see if anything in there is disabled as far as data/3g/4g ? Obviously you've checked your APN settings as well? If your stock didn't get data either I'd say your sim card is acting up. I know there's a thread on here for the dialer settings I've done it before myself just forget what they are. Until someone else has an idea might be worth a try

whatever build base you are, MJ7....you flash the MJ7 kernel module patch. If you Mk2 buildbase, you flash the Mk2 kernel patch..... Be sure the kernel patch is a valid download, You do this after installing rom and before first boot.

Hey again! So this is a new scenario now from last time or same issue? If you made a backup of your stock before you flashed to it, maybe you can restore but not a gaurentee.
You never were able to get Odin to see your phone?

Put phone into download mode.
Put the unzipped file into PDA or AP depending on Odin version.
Make sure only Auto Reboot and F Reset Time are checked.
Onces that's all set and Odin shows your phone connected. Hit start.

No you can go back and forth between mk2 and mj7 those are the only two. You cannot go down past mj7.
I bet if you did this you'd be good. There's a possibility you may need the Pit file but I think this file alone should get you back to normal. You really have nothing to lose at this point.

Well I don't think anything is going to install or restore correctly for you since your stock slot is screwed up.
You can Odin the mj7.
Then re root
Install SafeStrap again
Reflash Hyperdrive but this time you want the mj7 modules since that is what your stock is going to be. Do you follow me?
Basically you just want to bring your phone back to life first. Before you worry about anything else.
Getting mj7 modules is very easy.
And I'd suggest next time to just install hyperdrive on a ROM slot not your stock slot. If at that point you need help the folks in the SafeStrap thread would definitely help you

That thread has SafeStrap Roms for you.
First backup your stock slot
Then create a ROM slot and then activate it.
Then flash whatever ROM you want on that slot.. and flash modules after the ROM flashes .

Well I know it's not this hard lol don't take that the wrong way, probably something your doing. I'd say try another ROM. Unfortunately your not going to get away from tw since your on SafeStrap. If you are trying all this on a ROM slot just try a different one.
Could be any number of things going on here.
Bad download
Not a SS version ROM
Choosing Custom Kernel in Aroma
Plus a couple other things I could be missing since its late lol
Just a reminder :
You can only flash
Touchwiz 4.3 SafeStrap Roms
+ you can only have the stock kernel , no matter if it's an option in a ROM Aroma Setup. Sometimes those Aromas are also made for people like me with MDK S4 with custom recovery.
If you truly want this eclipse ROM you're going to have to find that thread somewhere or on Nitro's site and tell them exactly what steps you took to get you here with as much detail as possible.

Once you create a ROM slot you must activate it... Not just go back and start wiping and installing..
If you truly have your stock slot intact and all this is on a ROM slot then you shouldn't have any problems but my guess is maybe that's what happening.. Forgetting to actually activate the slot.

Are you downloading these files right to your phone or a computer then transferring to you phone?
I'd always download using the PC.. check the md5 of the download.
Transfer to SD card then check md5 once more to make sure your good.
Then hop in SafeStrap Recovery
- wipe data/factory reset
-wipe vache /Dalvic
* do that a couple times
-flash ROM zip
- don't leave SafeStrap yet
- flash modules
-clear cache/Dalvic once more
I've never had a problem doing it this way and I used to run hyperdrive.

If you odin using the full wipe or no-wipe NC5 tars your will be back to complete stock. You could then downgrade, root and install safestrap, then if you wanted to you could upgrade to 4.4.2 with root and install custom roms.

Hmmm well if you look at a flashable kernal, it makes cahnges to /system/lib/modules/
Since this is under system you SHOULD be able to reflash surges NC5 rooted rom.
I answered this in the other thread where this was asked. (Which has a zip with the NC5 kernel modules.)
OP, there is no reason to post multiple threads about a question.

Yeah I just looked under modules and I took a few screen shots of the hotspot turning on then immediately turning off before I flashed the KERNAL it came on like a charm just like surge said it would. I just don't want too have to do a full wipe

Well since the kernal is under /system and when you install a rom it usually formats system then installs everything. Those bad kernal files would get replaced after re-flashing without losing data.

Back to TMobile need recommendations. My S5 I bought used is running F0j4 and is

Stock and lagging as heck. I have always rooted and am almost done with rooting the TMO S5. I am looking for a rom that is complete and does not lag. I have always used the Stock roms on my other samsung verizon phones and felt the most comfortable with them.
Which is the Fastest lag free rom for the TMO s5 and closest to stock minus bloatware etc.
Thanks in advance.
Do you need wifi calling if not then
Use my maverick rom v4 on international thread it had s6 features because it is a port
If you need WiFi calling use my area 51 rom I update fast

I travel a lot internationally for work. so wifi calling is important to me. I will try the area 51.
Thanks, I want to support the guy that made the hispasian kernel how do i do that.?
i am on f0j4 to use your area51 rom do i need to be on og6? is flashing back as simple as using the bootloader and stock modem tar's in odin and flash back? Then can I flash the v9.6 of your rom onto my phone through odin as well using the pds button? or do i need to find a 0g6 version of the rom and flash that first?

area51 is oj4. if you want to support hispasian kernel you can flash it over the kernel used in 51. You might need to install the correct supersu but i would think it would work fine.

I got rooted I am just getting ready to flash the new rom. I used the hispasian kernel and sent him some love.
I don't need to stay with it if there is something better to run with the area 51 rom.
My question now is as follows? I already am running f0j4 do i need to flash the stock modem and bootloader? Can I just skip those steps and go straight to the odin and flash the rom?

I guess it would depend on the method that was used for getting the phone to OJ4.
If it was a full install then your bootloader is OJ4 which the area51 is based off of.
My modem and bootloader is OJ4 however others have said OG6 works as well too.
If your OG6 or OJ4 then you dont need to flash a modem or bootloader.
Also Area51 and 9.6 are flashed in custom recovery not odin.

I got to Oj4 by OTA I assume. When I bought the phone off of Craigslist it came this way.
I maybe confused in regards to V9.6 and Area 51. I though that Area 51 was the rom and it was currently in Version 9.6.
I have downloaded it from the download tab on this forum link. http://forum.xda-developers.com/tmo...t/maverick-5-1-1-improved-edition-v2-t3159387
It says it is version 1 when I download it. Area 51 v1.zip to be precise.
I was also planning on following the instructions on this page #3 forum post to flash the rom. Is this wrong? Am I going in the wrong direction?

Post 3 is not needed if you are on OJ4 already. Area51 and 9.6 are different roms. you do need to flash in twrp and install the rom from within twrp.
so step 4 and 5.
malbert16442 said:
Step 4
Close and then reopen Odin, pull the battery for 30 seconds, pop back in and boot into download mode all with your phone disconnected from your computer. Now grab the TWRP recovery image from here https://dl.twrp.me/klte/ (I use 2.8.7.0) and place into the PDA button inside odin, uncheck F Reset Time and Repartition then flash or click start.
Step 5
When step 4 completes, now you can do the 3 finger boot into TWRP recovery to flash V9.4 of this ROM.

However post 3 is old you would flash area51
Just for future reference. This section is only for developing. There is a Q&A section where you can post for questions like this. No offense but people always go crazy when others post in the wrong section.
