Throttling - AT&T HTC One (M8)

Any updated tricks to get around the dreaded AT&T throttling for unlimited users besides not using so much data? None of the APN settings I try work.
Sent from my HTC One_M8 using XDA Premium 4 mobile app

I personally haven't seen any successful workaround for the throttling posted here on XDA.

I've been trying to figure this out since I had my Galaxy S3 with no luck. I don't think its really do-able. I'm about to break down and switch to one of the 10GB shared family plans as I'm the only one on my account that uses any data.

The old swapping of the APN used to work for me..

It's Almost pointless to keep unlimited. That throttle speed is horrible.

Yeah it is. They have effectively made the unlimited plan useless, which is what I think they set out to do, when I'm being capped its something like 50kb/s, and that is just unusable.

Isn't there something in the contract that prevents them from doing that. If you're paying for unlimited 4G when you're on a 4G signal it should be unlimited at 4G speeds. That's just bull! Glad I'm not on AT&T.

The contract terms state quite the opposite, actually:
AT&T may reduce your data throughput speeds at any time or place if your data usage exceeds an applicable, identified usage threshold during any billing cycle. AT&T will provide you with advance notice of the usage threshold applicable to your data plan, or any changes to the applicable usage threshold either by a bill insert, email, text message or other appropriate means
And folks on AT&T aren't "paying" for 4G specifically. For folks where 4G is not even available, they pay the same price for their data plan.
Is this correct ideologically, or even from a logical/common sense standpoint? Its easily arguable that AT&T is in the wrong; and I would agree with you there. AT&T's policy can easily be seen as anti-consumer, and solely in AT&T's own interest.
But are they technically or legally in the right, its pretty debatable either way. AT&T can argue various points, such as the fact that the technology has changed, and the terms can therefore change also. The fact of the matter (in my understanding) is that AT&T, and all the carriers are having trouble keeping up with market demand for bandwidth. Smartphones are getting more and more data hungry, along with the way folks use these devices. The longer terms outlook for the networks to keep up with data demand is not good, to say the least. The carriers are going to be dumping a lot of money to upgrade their networks over the coming years/decades. And that money needs to come form somewhere. Its in the carriers interest to force customers onto tiered plans.
Unfortunately, ;egal action regarding throttling has only met with limited success, from what I can find on Google. One person won a small claims lawsuit and was awarded $850. Probably not an effort that most of us would be interested in pursuing. Class action has only been specific to the iPad 3G (from what I can fine), and won each owner a whopping $40. And class action lawsuit is actually prohibited by the . . . . (wait for it) . . . . present AT&T contract terms (and upheld by the Supreme Court)!

So still not like Verizon, where the throttle is temporary based on location and load.
Yay.
Oh darn you beat me to it. But I dont read it as only hspa+ customers will be throttled at 3gb, I understood it as all unlimited customers.

Negative. "If you have a 4G LTE smartphone and still have an unlimited data plan, the same process applies at 5GB of data usage, instead of 3GB."
so.. I'm confused. If i have an LTE phone in a market where there is no LTE --- is my threshold still 5GB? or is it 3GB?

Update: Ahh, you clicked the "what you need to know" button. Thats cool I guess. Are they admitting lte phones eat up much more data?
Kind of have to take this news with a grain of salt. 5GB was the prior threshold anyway, so LTE users aren't gaining any extra bandwidth prior to being throttled. Non-LTE users are just getting less.

I would think it would be determined off of the actual data plan attached to the phone. For example, notes have lte data. Where original s2 has hspa+ data.
Just glad I don't have to freak out about going over 2gb now.

No it wasn't the previous threshold, explain all the users throttled at 2GB or less in January. Like me. This at least explains what "top 5%" means finally, and spells out when you will be throttled.

Thats what I said though lol. There are 2 selections for unlmited plans, you can view them online as well under manage features. Smartphone personal unlmited and lte personal unlimited. When I had the note, yes I returned it..long story, I had the lte unlimited plan. This morning it automatically switched back to the smartphone personal plan which I guess I'll be throttled at 3gb instead of 5gb. I thought I may have been left on the lte unlimited plan. Either way this is a good step for us unlimited data customers but still not great.

5GB was the unofficial mark for throttling last year until they lost their mind and started throttling unlimited plan users before 3GB even though we were paying the same as the tier plan for 3 GB. That is when ATT lost all credibility. I have never used over 2 GB but would have like to have seen a higher limit of like 8 or 10 GB.
At least we do not have a moving limit now we can plan accordingly.

i currently am doing my parctice were i use my phone a lot for video chat and photo taking for price checking and inventory.
I aint tryying to denfend att in no way in fact i did start a complaint here in puerto rico fcc equivalent when this whole five percent thing started to the point of having to talk to there customer service manager.

That sucks. That almost happened to me this time when I changed my phone to GNote from Atrix. ATT tried to pull a fast one by charging me the same price for 3gb of data. It wasn't a difficult process but they did have to make a claim. Nowadays even supervisors can't change the plan... Thankfully, i keep a good eye on my usage.
I wonder if you guys can get the unlimited data plan back with the iPhone 2G (aka Original iPhone) trick. Get an old iPhone, activate it on iTunes and it will get you the unlimited data plan since that was the only plan available for the iPhone 2G. Don't know if that loophole was closed but some people have claimed they tried it in December and it was still working as of then.
EDIT: Looks like that loophole has been closed and no longer works
Beats getting overcharged i guess buat am able to use my phone normally so maybe now att is using there heads
or you can go the verizon way and have an 10gb plan (20gb if ya bought it at christmas time)
now theres a plan i dont think anyone will cross

They've been doing it for months and its everywhere not just in select areas but most people wouldn't ever use enough data to get throttled.
The only real change is that now they've set the throttle cap at 3gb for HSPA+ phones & 5gb for LTE phones. Up until last month they were basing the throttling on being in the 'top 5%' of other users in your area, which resulted in people on 'unlimited plans' getting throttled under 2gb.

Well thanks for the thanks anyway lol.. I was always suspicious of how they were throttling but now that they've set some actual numbers in stone I feel a little better about it. I'm a little irritated though that I pay for two identical unlimited data plans (for the past 5 years) and now one gives me 3GB while the other gives me 5GB.. even though I pay the same for both.. Oh well, its better than randomly being throttled at 2GB I guess.
At about 6.5gbs (which is pretty low for my average monthly usage) and have not been throttled even after reviving notification.

"Abuse King" I certainly hope it said this. It would be epic... All hail the King of abuse!
$70 "T-Mobile Monthly 4G" pre-paid will give you unlimited talk, text, and 5gb of data before they throttle.
They also offer 100 minutes, unlimited text, and 5gb before throttling for $30 a month (which is what I use)
Sorry, I can't speak to Simple Mobile and their throttling, I just had to quote the abuse King.
I read through their ToS. It says
Protective Measures
To provide a good experience for the majority of our customers and minimize capacity issues and degradation in network performance we may take measures including temporarily reducing data throughput for a subset of customers who use a disproportionate amount of bandwidth. Additionally, in the event that a customer is in violation of the Permissible and Prohibited Data Uses listed above, we may reduce your data speed for the remainder of that billing cycle or terminate data service without notice or refund. We may also suspend, terminate, or restrict your data session, Plan, or service if you use your Data Plan in a manner that interferes with other customers' service, our ability to allocate network capacity among customers, or that otherwise may degrade service quality for other customers.
Update: Now this is just funny. I went to check if Simple Mobile is a BBB accredited Business, they are not. Look at what the BBB rated them though.

Read the small print, if its one GB then its one GB every one knows unlimited is not unlimited anymore. At least you should if you know enough about phones to be here. I'm on contract and have 5 lines (not all mine of course, me, wife and kids) but my unlimited data is 5 GB & i expect if i hit that which i make sure i don't that i'll be throttled. So if your plan throttles at 1GB and you get throttled at 1GB what's the problem? You didn't read the small print? I just dont get it. I don't like it, i mean on 4g i get close to 20mbs & i can connect 8 devices they love to advertise that. So i could eat up my cap in a couple hrs. But thats how it is. Look how fast our phones are and oh yeah your capped but you can hit your cap faster with our network then any other lol. & buy a HTC one series phone will give you no sd card slot but 50GB of drop box storage. I laughed in the reps face when he told me that i said so with a 5GB cap in ten months i can fill up my drop box lol. Should have seen his face. I know, i know, wifi but still. I swear its a conspiracy, speed up the networks and phones lower caps and raise data prices, & now send us all to cloud storage wtf!!!! SORRY END RANT

LTE question

So my girlfriend is going to be getting a note.
But we don't get lte in our area. We hardly get 4g.
Do we absolutely have to add a lte data plan on to our account or could we get like a 3g/4g data plan?
Basically don't want to pay for something we are never going to use.

You can call ATT to verify but I'm pretty sure you can use a normal data plan. Your account needs to be provisioned for LTE for it to work (and with the SIM iirc), but you should still be able to pull hspa+ with no issues.
I wasn't charged anything extra for having LTE provisioned on my account, but I'm also grandfathered unlimited.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I717 using XDA
Yeah, it will depend greatly on the actual AT&T person who sets you up. Bottom line is that technically, you can use the Note without being provisioned for LTE. My girlfriend and I both had our Notes set up on our old data plan for a couple of months before a store realized the error while fishing in our account for other stuff.
Ok. I actually just called them.
The guy basically said that no matter what I get for data 3g/4g/LTE its all the same price.
It just depends on how much data she wants.
Can anyone confirm this?
She had a 2gb data plan from like 2 1/2 years ago. They don't offer that so they said regardless we are going to be charged more once we upgrade the contract.

Yeah the 2gb plan is no longer available, it's now like 500mb for 20 3gb for 30 and i dint remember how much the 5gb plan was cause i went with the 3gb
The plans and prices are all the same regardless of what smartphone u have. Currently they are $20/300mb $30/3gb $50/5gb with tethering. if u already had a smartphone on an older smartphone data plan you are grandfathered in to that for the time being.

Why do you say for the time being? Are they trying to do away with the grandfathered unlimited? Honestly...that's the only reason I stuck with ATT

4g trottling

With unlimited internet, but 4g caps off at 5g, is there a way to remove this cap?
Sign up for unlimited 4g.

If there was, what would be the point of throttling? You can pay for unlimited with no cap.

Your not that fast getting throttled, and no, that is a limit set by the company. You want a dev to go hack something inside the company for you? So pay up for unlimited 4g.

Let me dumb it down, your device is point B, T-Mobile network is point A, throttling happens at point A. Developers here don't mange the T-Mobile network

Please do us the favor and leave if you don't like the answers. The reality is, there are virtually no workarounds for getting unlimited on a not officially unlimited plan. If you have a problem with being throttled, pony up the extra few bucks to get unlimited with no throttling.
