I have a Verizon Samsung Galaxy S 4 MK2 rooted - Do I allow the Verizon 4.4 (KitKat) update to load? If you advise to allow the update, what might I need to do to restore the privileges the root had allowed?
Don't do the OTA when rooted. Almost always a bad idea. What you need is here:

Exactly what es0tericcha0s said. Do not take any OTA updates especially from VZW. Always a bad idea.

It's funny , on some threads some say never to use the software update due to a possible brick. the I've seen on other threads to root then update because there seems to be a build update after the MJ7 build. Mine has the MJ7
Today, I've read that Kit Kat may be out by the end of the month
Can anyone shed light to my question?
Before I read, not to try the update, I did. All it did was fail, plus after I checked that I still had root and a 0 x 0 in the warranty status, so I felt good about that )
Thanks
There's a thread on how to keep root and update in the development section

I guess the question is there an update build after MJ7? or is the newest MK2?
MK2 is the newest build just came out.

someone correct me if im wrong, but the any ota will error out if you have any system altering files ie xposed, viper4android, things like that. Or if you have deleted any factory apps you will need to get those back before attempting an ota. In my experience, i've had to odin flash a factory no wipe image before any ota took (me7 ,mi1, mj7,and mk2) therefor you would need to update in sequence to get the latest. ie from mj7 to mk2 before you could access any later version. so you'll eventually have to update to mk2 before kit kat anyways.

Not "any" system files, just any system files that the OTA is updating. Of course, it's not easy to tell what those files are.
The MI1 to MJ7 OTA, which was the update to 4.3, updated a LOT of files, so anything that you changed is likely to cause the update to fail.
MK2 doesn't touch nearly as much, so it's less likely to fail due to update. I think I've seen the MK2 update work even though xposed was installed and enabled, which wouldn't work when going to MJ7.
Having said all that wouldn't you still need to be on mk2 to ota the next update whatever that may be?

Yes, that's been the way the updates have come. No way to skip updates using OTAs.
Sorry if this is a dumb question but I find it harder and harder to find stuff around here anymore with people using the same keywords in their threads for ROMS and updates such as stock when it's actually a modified stock etc.
Anyway where is a stock root safe rom coming from ME7 to get to 4.3 or 4.4
I have SU set for root saver but anytime I try and go to the OTA I get a settings have stopped error.

Using an OTA, ME7 will update to MI1. That's rootable with Saferoot, so why worry about root saver?
MI1 will OTA to MJ7, which will OTA to MK2. Those are also rootable.
I'd recommend flashing a no-wipe MK2, which will get you to 4.3. That's available in this post.
You can't get to 4.4 yet since Verizon hasn't released it for our phones.

Hello, first post.
I'm non-rooted and I've taken the 4.4.2 OTA update. After realizing that Applications can no longer write to my SD, I'd like to go with a custom ROM.
Are there any avaliable? I realize it's soon.
I'm on SCH i545 4.4.2 Build NC5
Thanks

#1) There's nothing you can do until a Root Method is achieved for NC5. It's probably going to be awhile. Look at the Galaxy S5 forum; high bounty for root on that device.
#2) Once Root is acheived then my guess is Safe Strap will be the mechanism to boot into recovery for flashing Rom's.
#3) FWIW you should NEVER take any OTA's from the carrier unless you can settle for a locked down bloated OS. Just keep tabs in these forums and hopefully our trusted Dev's can find a solution......
Mine is running 4.3 and rooted. I am happy with everything. Just read the post how to upgrade to 4.4.2 and retain root. It seems Kitkat is becoming the majority soon. I am concerned 4.3 may not be well supported .... in 2+ years. Well, should I consider upgrading? Is there any compelling reason that Kitkat is the way to go?

Right now there is only a small different between 4.4 and 4.3 stay wit 4.3 the longest u can. Android is still supporting 2.3 apps. So when u upgrade we will probably be in android 6.0. Thats what I'm doing I have the s4 rooted in 4.3 and very happy

I'm work you. I'm at least going to wait for a root exploit before I upgrade. I made my wife take the update ( non rooted) and there's nothing that I seen to make me jump on it.

Yes just wait. I am also waiting for the root exploit to be found for 4.4 but for now. I am happy wit my wifi tether app and greenify app. Make my phone worth it staying in 4.3, especially when u used 50GB every month still grandfather in unlimited data.
Once Sbreen has 4.4 on hyperdrive ill upgrade to it. Im too happy with HD to give it up lol

Surge's method in the general section keeps root in upgrading to the ota 4.4. Wifi tether is natively enabled.

I used Surge's method and went from 4.3 MK2 straight to 4.4 NC5. The only problem I had was the lock screen issue but I followed instructions in the following thread and fixed it.

Works great.
I used this method because I wanted tethering to work and if you root these days you need to ODIN back to get an OTA anyway.
So there aren't any real drawbacks to the method to get KitKat and retain root.
You also don't update the bootloader with Surge's method and that's a plus.
Whatever you decide OP, don't take the OTA.
Not sure how many people are looking for a different root method.

How do you know what boot loader you are on? If the BL isn't changed with Surge's method then that means you should be able to roll back from NC5 to MK2 if you don't like NC5, correct?
If you are rooted on 4.3 I would promote that you stay where you are. On 4.3 with root, you can freeze all the crapware with TiBU and have a very stable and efficient platform.
Once you jump to 4.4, you'll lose root and will be stuck with all the crapware. To be fair, my wife's S4 is now on 4.4 and seems to be running fine. I just don't trust all the bloat that sits there behind the scenes

I must be missing the how-to thread, but I've searched and come up empty handed...
I have a Verizon S4 on 4.3 with root. Originally I had 4.2 rooted, did the procedure to keep root when I upgraded to 4.3, but now I cannot upgrade to 4.4.2 without removing root (the OTA fails).
How do I remove root from 4.3 so that I can take the OTA update? I found this thread here, however, the Stock Firmware Page only lists 4.2.2 as an option, not 4.3. I didn't want to brick my phone by flashing to 4.2.2.
Is this really the simplest way to make my rooted 4.3 take the OTA for 4.4.2?
Thanks!

First of all, I would recommend staying at MK2. There are many reasons. If you REALLY want to goto 4.4.2, you have to open SuperSU and tap on Cleanup for permanent unroot. Then try taking the OTA.
EDIT: To get root back on 4.4.2, use towelroot.
EDIT 2: If you want to keep MK2 baseband but upgrade to 4.4.2, follow surges method.
Forgot to list that...I tried using SuperSU but it just sits there with the spinning circle forever and never says it has completed.
I have no real reason to go to 4.4.2, other than my desire to try the new OS...
xXsquirr3lsXx - Can you elaborate on why you recommend staying on MK2?
Code3VW - The other option you have is to ODIN the NC5 tar.
You could use the verizon repair tool , it will load the latest version of android and then use towelroot for root. I had the same problem on my wifes S3 and it worked and it is confirmed towelroot works on the S4.

The very very very slim outside chance of finding a bootloader exploit...would most likely be found for pre - kitkat releases.
