Any ROMS Compatible after OTA Update? - Verizon Samsung Galaxy S 4

Hello, first post.
I'm non-rooted and I've taken the 4.4.2 OTA update. After realizing that Applications can no longer write to my SD, I'd like to go with a custom ROM.
Are there any avaliable? I realize it's soon.
I'm on SCH i545 4.4.2 Build NC5
Thanks

#1) There's nothing you can do until a Root Method is achieved for NC5. It's probably going to be awhile. Look at the Galaxy S5 forum; high bounty for root on that device.
#2) Once Root is acheived then my guess is Safe Strap will be the mechanism to boot into recovery for flashing Rom's.
#3) FWIW you should NEVER take any OTA's from the carrier unless you can settle for a locked down bloated OS. Just keep tabs in these forums and hopefully our trusted Dev's can find a solution......

[Q] Succesful downgrade from mk2 to mj7!!!

My Samsung galaxy S4 i545 verizon was rooted on mj7. I Odin back to factory with the mj7 odin file.then took the mk2 O.T.A. update.. Then I downgraded back to mj7 using odin.. I've been searching forums all day on this few people already know about this, why isnt this big news? Is this a possibility to get a custom recovery on mj7 or mk2?

No, it's not big news. MK2 isn't a major update and doesn't change the kernel or the bootchain, so it's possible to downgrade to MJ7 from MK2. No, no possiblity of a custom recovery. Santa's not that generous, unfortunately.

[Q] Updating MDK and ME7

I asked a similar question back in October, but fell out of the loop again and didn't want to necro an old post. I just want to verify that the information I got back then is still relavent.
Is installing custom ROMs still the best way to bring my MDK S4 up to the current version? If so, what should I be looking for in a ROM title to tell me that it's just a stock ROM that gives the same experience as the OTA? Someone mentioned Deodex'd in my last post, but I have no idea what that means or if it's what I should be looking for.
And for an S4 that came stock with ME7? Should my girlfriend (with an ME7 update) just take the newest OTA and root that, or is there a benefit to sticking with ME7 and installing a ROM? If the answer is to go with a ROM then she'll want the stock new OTA experience as well for now, are there any ME7 ROMs available that can do that?
Thanks again guys!
Don't touch your MDK S4. Leave it on MDK with Loki. It's practically an unlocked bootloader with actual TWRP and CWM. You can still install 4.3 TouchWiz stock ROMs on it because you can change the kernel. Plus you can run AOSP ROMs, which is awesome.

You're girls me7 s4 might as well update to mj7 or mk2 (4.3) as then she'll still be using Safestrap. Mostly everyone is running Hyperdrive anyways. Great performance and battery life with that. Update it, throw Safestrap 3.71 on there then Hyperdrive 12....pretty much bug free.
As far as you're MDK phone just grab whatever AOSP 4.3 or 4.4 ROM you like. You're lucky to have that phone!!

I have ME7 on my phone and decided to update to be compatible with hyperdrive.
I started the installation like 6 hours ago; is it supposed to take this long?
I had it rooted and got rid of all the bloatware from Verizon using titanium. Would that have something to do with it? Otherwise, I don't know what's going on. Thank you, and I apologize if this was addressed in any other thread.

No its not supposed to take that long. So you're trying to take the ota from me7 you're saying right? You may have to Odin if that doesn't work for you. Sometimes unfreezing and removing mods just doesn't do it

[Q] OTA 4.4.2 Fails with Root

I must be missing the how-to thread, but I've searched and come up empty handed...
I have a Verizon S4 on 4.3 with root. Originally I had 4.2 rooted, did the procedure to keep root when I upgraded to 4.3, but now I cannot upgrade to 4.4.2 without removing root (the OTA fails).
How do I remove root from 4.3 so that I can take the OTA update? I found this thread here, however, the Stock Firmware Page only lists 4.2.2 as an option, not 4.3. I didn't want to brick my phone by flashing to 4.2.2.
Is this really the simplest way to make my rooted 4.3 take the OTA for 4.4.2?
Thanks!

First of all, I would recommend staying at MK2. There are many reasons. If you REALLY want to goto 4.4.2, you have to open SuperSU and tap on Cleanup for permanent unroot. Then try taking the OTA.
EDIT: To get root back on 4.4.2, use towelroot.
EDIT 2: If you want to keep MK2 baseband but upgrade to 4.4.2, follow surges method.
Forgot to list that...I tried using SuperSU but it just sits there with the spinning circle forever and never says it has completed.
I have no real reason to go to 4.4.2, other than my desire to try the new OS...
xXsquirr3lsXx - Can you elaborate on why you recommend staying on MK2?
Code3VW - The other option you have is to ODIN the NC5 tar.
You could use the verizon repair tool , it will load the latest version of android and then use towelroot for root. I had the same problem on my wifes S3 and it worked and it is confirmed towelroot works on the S4.

[Q]: TW 5.0.1 and SafeStrap

Yesterday Verizon posted information about the lollipop update 5.0.1.
I'm assuming that the current 5.73 SafeStrap will not work with the stock 5.0.1 firmware. Do any devs have an idea how to load Roms onto the s4 after the update? Or do we assume that anyone not running an MDK bootloader is stuck in 4.4.x based or with the stock 5.0.1 TW?

I would say wait and see. I have been seeing other updates to 5.0 also updating the bootloader. Maybe a new exploit in there? I would wait to take the update until either A: It is confirmed that SS will/will not work or B: they find a new exploit to use.
Currently, there is no new exploits for lollipop, and there is no rooting method to lollipop. If you REALLY want lollipop, I suggest you flash NC5 and then use software update to update all the way to lollipop.

Waiting on a boot.img so we can get the 5.01 GPE rom to run under safestrap ...
I gotta say, they did update the recovery modules, and the boot modules too. The only downside is that they did not implement certain features that the galaxy s5 right now has, but overall probably the best update yet. Plus it is pretty smooth.

touchwizz is still crap tho
I can agree with that. I updated this morning. I'm disappointed that the s5 camera and the favorites in messenger didn't make it into the update, but I can't complain. It's still lollipop.

I presume that this update loses (unpaid) WiFi tether?
Currently on rooted NG6 with tether modules on VZW unlimited. Keeping tether is the only mandatory feature for me.
Wait?
There are guides out there to upgrade and keep root.i would advise using one of those.
If you upgrade to the OTA OC1 you will be on another locked boot loader with no way to downgrade back to Kitkat if you don't like it.
Currently as it stands, there's no root for OTA OC1. There's also no Safestrap that will work with it and no way to Odin back to nc5 once you do the OTA upgrade.
Development Forums are for developers to share their work and post their Roms and Mods.
Questions belong in the Q&A section.
Thread has been moved to correct section, please pay attention to XDA rules.

[INFO] Kitkat and Lollipop - ROOT, ROMs, etc.

nobody here is responsible in any way if you break your phone. It was your fault. Figure it out yourself.
Before I begin, I would like to explain the usage of build numbers. There are 4 Kitkat firmwares and 2 Lollipop firmwares. The last three letters of the build number are used to identify the specific build (everything before that is device code stuff)
Kitkat builds are as follows:
NC5
NG6
NK1
NK4 (generally unused, as this was a preparation update for Lollipop)
Lollipop builds are as follows:
OC1
OF1
The easiest way to root is by being on a kitkat firmware and root the firmware itself using a kernel swap method, or downgrading to NC5 and using Towelroot.
OF1 IS ROOTABLE. CLICK HERE FOR INFO
OC1 is rootable through the usage of Kingroot (desktop version only): LINK HERE
YOU CAN NOT USE ANY CUSTOM RECOVERY (TWRP, CLOCKWORKMOD) WITH LOLLIPOP. NOT EVEN SAFESTRAP (it's too buggy and requires flashing the nc5 kernel to even get into)
(mdk users need not apply)
ROM info available in 2nd post.
Flashing ROMs
You can not flash CyanogenMod or any ROMs based off of its source code! Those are only for the MDK bootloader.
UPDATE: If you are on the OC1/OF1 bootloader, you can only flash TouchWiz Lollipop ROMs.
Two pretty solid ROMs for lollipop are:
[PORT][ROM] Albe95 S6 FULL PORT 4.6 [S6/Edge Plus/N5 FEATURE PORT] (UPDT 31/10/15)
stang5litre Ediition 5.0 OC1 MDK,SS,FF/OC1/OF1
I surely appreciate this post. Kit Pop was the only one that peaked My interest but after seeing this I will be back at it. The o.p.s often don't list if the rom is Safestrap compatible so I shy away.
Thanks
Nice write up and in for future updates on OC1 roms. Really hoping for an eclipse-style update to OC1. I hate touchwiz.

I can not get this goddamn Kingroot to work on OC1 Lollipop. Any suggestions guys? I've tried it a dozen times.
thesame here... i cannot get this Kingroot to work on my phone...
I read in this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-s4-verizon/general/rooted-galaxy-s4-t3158098/page1 that it is possible, but nothing for me...
Nice.
I don't see Kitpop(I finally got my APN issues sorted out)
Someone Sticky this. I think I opened 15 threads with people saying they boned themselves with OC1... People need to know how cruel Verizon is.
hey guys
so Samsung has had this program for a while where they automatically update the security policy (specifically, SELinux, things relating to root privileges, etc) and they may have updated that system component to make kingroot not work. I was patient enough to stay on KitKat until some rooted lollipop ROMs came out, thus having the older bootloader so I can downgrade to nc5 and root that way. next time, all of you oc1 people who tried kingroot but failed, be patient!
if you are rooted and for some reason get a security policy update, you won't lose root. if you're not rooted and an update got rolled out to you, you're SOL. Samsung usually rolls these out without user intervention in the background

will any of these roms work with flashfire and the oc1 update?
Eclipse (a TouchWiz KK ROM with a really thorough AOSP theme, my personal favorite)
HyperDrive RLS21 (TouchWiz Kitkat, super customizable
Empty Galaxy (you might like this guy's theming to TW, it's pretty awesome!)

no unfortunately. eclipse and hyperdrive are based off of KitKat and empty galaxy only works on the mdk bootloader at this time.
your options on oc1 are stang5litre edition and muniz_ri's stock/deodexed ROMs
So basically if I (actually a friend of mine) is on NK4 4.4.2, the best way to root is to upgrade to lollipop via the verizon OTA update, then use Kingroot to root?
But what if I want cyanogenmod on the phone? Should I root a different way...how?

Don't do that!
There is a method to downgrade to NC5, gain root, and upgrade without losing root. Search the Dev forum.

If you're past MDK (which NK4 is past MDK) you can't use CM. You can only use Safestrap ROMs for KK, and OC1 ROMs for locked bootloaders using Flashfire.
updated OP to reflect new OF1 update.
OF1 (minor update that mainly fixed the Stagefright bug) is not rootable and the qfuse counter has been increased, meaning no downgrading to OC1 (yet)

in my opinion, touchwiz became more usable, but for people who have locked bootloaders who want custom roms (like me) are basically stuck on KitKat. oh well at least I have a choice, sorry for those who don't.
