Unlimited Hotspot Just Stopped working - T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy S 5

I was using an international ROM, over 100gb of data used on my 3gb hotspot, but then suddenly today I got a message pop up on my phone that I have used all 3gb of hotspot data, and I must upgrade to continue using hotspot.
I switched roms out to the infinity rom from this tmobile forums, can't even connect now.
Very frustrating right now as I am on vacation and need my hotspot to work.
Any ideas? I went through the steps to manually configure my system apks to stop tethering provision checks but the infinity rom already has those provisions enabled.
Any help would be greatly appreciated. Any other tmobile users experience this? About to flash back to an international rom and see if anything is fixed. Paying for hotspot data seems absurd when I already pay for unlimited data.

Ok, I think i figured out how to do that. I will post if I keep having issues. Thanks for the tip.
I also found out that I am able to browse any https website, but any http website seems to trigger the buy more hotspot data splashpage. Odd

Are 3rd party tethering apps detectable by ATT?

I was thinking about using the app wifi tether and was wondering about ATT detecting it. I am on unlimited data and don't want to get the boot...if I used it once in a great while.

I have been using the stock tethering by rooting and deleting some tethering apk (look for it somewhere in the forums). But I have not had any issues or messages about tethering. They will give you a warning if you are detected though and that'll give you time to stop tethering. In other words they're not gonna just take you off unlimited instantly.
If you're still on gingerbread root the phone and download titanium backup and delete tethering manager then boom. Don't have to pay for tethering services

Ok, so back on topic here.
They can and they can't.
If you just browse the net and do normal things like that, no, they can't.
But, you start sucking up bandwidth playing MMO's and downloading torrents, then yeah, they will get you eventually.
The amount of Bandwidth you use will get you before they seek you out for tethering is what I am trying to say. Just be reasonable and responsible is all.
On my cappy I was running saurom and tethered alot of the day to my laptop. Never got anything from ATT. Now I have the Note and its stock. Installed FoxFi and within a few days of just normal browsing I got a text from ATT so I had to call them and stop tethering, don't want to lose my unlimited data plan.

I have unlimited data and used to tether my laptop to my Infuse when my internet was down at my college house. My roommates also would tether to it and use their laptops and our internet connected bluray player to watch netflix. I never had any problems, until I installed a ROM that didn't have the tetheringmanager.apk removed, because the developer thought free tethering was wrong...ugh. I didn't bother to check for it being uninstalled, as most custom ROMs have it removed, and I got a text from AT&T about an hour later.
I was really pissed when I went and read that the dev didn't remove it, because it caused me to lose my tethering ability since I want to keep my unlimited data, but it was also my fault for not checking. Long story short, make sure the apk is reoved, and you should be good to go. They may still catch you if you use enormous amounts of data as others have said, but they will warn you before changing your unlimited plan to a tiered tethering one.
My suggestion, do it while you can, and just stop if you get warned! =]
Ok pretty much what I was expecting. I have a few questions but first I want to clarify that I'm on Saurom VII, does anyone know if this ROM had the APK removed and what's the name of it so I can remove with titanium if need be? Thanks in advance.

Edit: I found two apps named wifi share 1.0 and wifi sharing manager 1.0...bingo?
No bingo, though I don't think it would hurt to remove those either, as those could also tip off att, not sure though. The one you need to make sure of is tetheringmanager.apk. Go into root explorer: system > app > and delete tetheringmanager.apk

I couldst find anything name tethering manager, but I found like 3 other apps that the wifi icon but not sure what they do lol. Here a screen shot..., well apparently I can't upload a screen shot because the JPEG had an invalid file extension (using the XDA app)

Disabling TetheringManager
This thread is very helpful. Thanks!
Posters have suggested that you delete the TetheringManager apk. Could you just freeze it (in Titanium Backup) instead?
backup then remove
You can freeze it if you have the Premium Titanium Backup. If you don't you can back it up then uninstall it. That way you can restore it if need.
Yes. Freezing works.

I'm really curious as to how exactly AT&T figures out who tethers. In the past, I tethered all the time whenever I needed to use my laptop in the field. Never a problem, and I never abused it. Then I got my international SGSII (GT-I9100). I was trying to download a wi-fi driver to my home PC so I could connect with my Cox Cable internet home network. I probably had tethering on for maybe 5 minutes, and I know I had to have consumed <5megs of data. A couple hours later I got the email and text from AT&T telling me they were moving me off the unlimited plan to the limited plan.
How'd they know? The phone isn't available on AT&T, and didn't have any of AT&T's tething apk's like tetheringmanager.apk. I've tried Googling to see if anybody knows exactly how they know, but nobody seems to know.
ClockworkMod Tether is supposed to be invisible to the phone company. I'm just afraid to test it now! Tether link: http://goo.gl/7Ay6w

There's been a lot of discussion about how AT&T detects tethering. From everything I've read, I believe that they look at the TTL parameter in the packets to see if there's an extra hop. When you tether, packets originate on the tethered device and the TTL gets changed. Apparently, some of the USB tether apps like ClockworkMod Tether don't change the TTL, so they avoid detection.
I haven't tested this myself, so I don't know for sure that ClockworkMod Tether is safe to use. Maybe other people have used it and can report here.

Isn't the Tethering Manager app needed for 3rd party Tethering to work? When I start FoxFi, Tethering Manager also got started immediately. I am on stock rooted.
I got the text from AT&T saying that I had to stop tethering so I called and tried to lie about but they said they were tipped off because I accessed the apple store multiple time and since I was on WM at the time it would be impossible for me to do that on my device. They were correct I was tethering to an ipod touch and they somehow knew. The women told me sometimes they get tips from their security system that tells them different things about the likelyhood of what customers are tethering and when their system gathers enough information to prove someone is tethering it automatically sends a text to that customer. I felt stupid for tryin to lie after she told me their records show I never switched my sim to an iphone and was still able to access the apple store several times. I never got caught tethering until I tethered the ipod.

short answer. wifi tethering doesn't come on the 2gb plan. only 5gb or higher. so yeah. you'll have to find a way around that I guess.

Check out my reply to another post in the General forum. Use one of the Tethering Widgets to get you past the subscription alert messages. It has successfully worked for many people on different carriers. I used "Fattin's" Wifi Tether widget.
Is that a custom ROM with tethering enabled? The limited or no connectivity, yellow triangle, comes when you have successfully connected to the network, but don't have internet access... then in your case your computer decides to go back to a remembered network...
Make sure Wifi is off before you enable tethering, and sometimes you will have to connect and reconnect and few times, even give it a minute before the yellow triangle disappears... This is all contingent on your rom having tethering enabled, and you're trying to use the stock android tethering...
To keep it from autoconnecting to the different network, you'll have to remove that from the preferred networks list temporarily...

[Q] T-Mobile Hotspot Tethering - VPN Workaround Dead

Not sure whats going on, but my go-to way for avoiding hotspot paywalls recently stopped working.
Nothing on my side has changed. I'm still using my same personal OpenVPN server with the same config files.
I did change laptops recently, but I double checked with Wireshark, all packets coming in and out are OpenVPN packets with a few TCP packets sprinkled in there. No way you T-Mobile can tell what the packets are really for.
Has anyone else noticed this? I'm thinking T-Mobile has switched to tracking tether usage by using the phone itself to report it.
If thats the case, I could probably get around it by rooting and using a custom ROM with its own hotspot app (like CM). Right?
But meh... I'm happy with the phone as it is right now.
All the Carriers are cracking done on tethering. And I don't think switching to CM will help. I'm with you I love Sense to switch to CM
If you have the T-Mobile my account app installed it's tracking what your doing. As for tethering, I have the truly unlimited, no tether included plan, and tether with out a problem.
HTC One
So if I uninstall the my account app, they cant track it?

The tracking function requires user permission, which I have not done...
You could try paying for a service that you use
That's an option or use the work around and get it for free, after all you are paying for the data. Why not use it as you please.

I have been noticing that on the lg g4 and now the v10 that mobile my account shows small usage of mobile data but not the actual amount I used. I might just be a mobile thing. Not quite sure but I too saw the same thing. But I also watched a week's worth of anime on my laptop via router and only was a 20mb increase in hotspot usage.
What are your mobile settings and the app settings? Thanks

I used all the same as the stock apn except I changed to ipv4...I assume you're rooted. Did you turn off the wifi scan setting under wifi?
Yes, I'm rooted and the scanning is off. I have even emailed the developer of the app. His last response was that I need a vpn.
There must be some sneaky software tracking whether you have tethering enabled. My Hotspot Data is being used/throttled no matter if I'm behind a VPN or tethering to another Android phone.
I'm rooted, removed all of the suspicious looking system apps, and set the APN settings to what I've always used before. I'm at the point of giving up and probably just going to use another phone to tether until a stable custom ROM is released.
I used to have this problem on my old Note 4 where the WiFi Tether app was working perfectly but Tmo was still tracking my data usage. The workaround that I found was to connect to a private VPN on my laptop. I used Private Internet Access to hide my IP and then I was able to tether off my phone with Tmo no longer capturing data used. I'm not sure if it will work on my new v10 though since I haven't gotten around to rooting it yet. I think there's a free Google Chrome extension that will do that same thing and for free. I forgot the name, sorry.
On my note 3 the guide I followed said I had to change the build file in a couple spots and then it worked perfect if that helps u guys out at all I really want this but can't use a vpn bc ps4 won't allow it with online gaming and my phone all I got out here in the woods

Brother I have to pay for tethering. And only allowed 4gigs. That's why I'm asking. I have tried a lot of apps but failed. It still shows that I am using my allowance .
Not quite sure what you are trying to do. You can tether to your phone within the settings or wifi tether to another device, using the wifi settings

Bro thing is I am paying extra £5 for 30gigs of tethering.and I have my 3UK app. Which shows me how much I have used off that allowance. On my Samsung galaxy s4 omega ROM. My allowance would remain the same. Showing that there was something built in the ROM which prevented my service provider to not know that I am using using WiFI Hotspot
OK I understand !
In France we are allowed to use wifi tethering without over taxes !

I see that you have also posted this question on the elephone.hk forum with a similar lack of clarity. What exactly are you trying to achieve?
Tethering is where your phone becomes a WiFi access point and other devices connect to it to use the phone's mobile data connection to access the Internet. I'm sure you know this, but I don't understand why you would think that your telco would provide this data connection for free.
As a rule of thumb, if you have a data plan with your telco (Three, or whoever) which allows unlimited data, then you are normally limited to a certain amount of data that can be used by other devices connected via your phone. This limit might be zero. If your plan isn't unlimited, then usually telcos don't care how the data is used. I don't know exactly how they know whether data is going to a tethered device, but I suspect that there is information within the TCPIP header which can be snooped.
So are you looking for an app that will disguise the fact that you have other devices tethered to your phone? Do you have two separate data allowances - one for tethering and one for direct traffic? I don't know of any app which will disguise tethered data, but if you describe your problem more clearly, perhaps someone else will be able to help - or tell your that it is not possible.

Well brother I pay extra £5 for 30gig of WiFi hotspot. On my galaxy s4 I had Omega ROM and I could use unlimited as it was disguising my network usage. I have a three app installed on my phone. And it shows how much data I have used from my allowance. Where as on Gs4 it show zero MBS used of allowance.
Don't think you can get round it. Well not here anyways best bet is to look for an app that could help you with the masking of your data usage as this isn't specific to just this phone
Thanks will do
