OTA Kit Kat thread for non-rooted phones. - Verizon Galaxy Note 3 General

I created this thread for people who do not have their phones rooted.
I am downloading the OTA currently and can't wait to discuss the pros and cons about this update compared to Jelly Bean.

The OTA was indeed 4.4.2
I am loving the notification bar being all white. It will take more time to comment on any other features.
"Google Camera" is a must if you are on Kit Kat and you like bokeh effects (someone's face or a specific item that is in focus and everything else out of focus). The effect is more profound if the background items that are out of focus are far away.
I mention Google Camera because you have to have Kit Kat to install it.

Can you test FoxFi to make sure it works on the update?

I have never used it before but I will download it when I get home and see if I can get my 3ds to connect through it...I also have a 10.1 tablet at home I will try it on as well.
I am on the share everything plan so hotspot is free for me...I have never used it though.

I went to Foxfi's website and they list kit Kat on the Note 3 as a workable device.
http://pdanet.co/help/devices.php

I really want to hear about battery life before making the plunge. If anyone can throw some stats up in a few days after a couple cycles I would greatly appreciate it :good:

I went to activate foxfi but in the end it wanted me to turn on mobile hotspot from settings....seeing how I am on a share everything plan I am able to have free mobile hotspot. Therefore I can't verify if foxfi works or not...the play store app lists that it does on the Note 3 and the foxfi website says that it does on the Note 3.

The foxfi app had me make a pin to unlock my phone...now even after uninstalling foxfi I can't remove the pin security. The option to choose none is shaded and I am unable to choose none. Uhg!!!

Mine didn't change either...I didn't know anything about the new one until I just read about it...I want it!

So now that Note 3 and other Verizon phones starting to get 4.4. Do you think we will see tap-n-pay Google Wallet ever? Or you think that will still be forever blocked on non-rooted/stock Verizon phones?

Are there new radios or is the signal strength any better in 4.4?

Verizon setup ISIS on my Note 3 at the time of my purchase. The first time I tried to use it, I didn't realize that I hadn't added the American Express Serve card (with the $25 free money added). The second time I tried to use it I couldn't get it to work...However, S-beam was off and now I keep it on. Both times above I gave up and paid with my card...so I am still waiting to try it for the first time.
As far as Google Wallet goes...I just downloaded the app from the Play Store. I will mess around with it after work to see how I can get it to work. Already though it tells me about the most recent purchases I have done with Google even the free ones.

There is a certain section on my way home that I always lose signal if I am talking to someone...it has been the same with the Incredible 2, galaxy S3, LG G2 and the Galaxy Note 3 before Kit Kat.. I will respond to your question after about a week of going home after work. I expect it to be the same though.
Is your Note 3 worst than other phones you have had?

I'm curious about the battery life. My battery life is outstanding on my Note 3 on 4.3... Hoping KK is the same. Haven't taken the plunge yet.. Still reading feedback.

By far. My HTC Thunderbolt had decent reception after it got a couple updates.
At work I'll be sitting right next to guys with other phones on verzion(Note 2, S4, motos) and they all get way better signal than the few of us that have the note 3.

Battery life...ehhh. I keep my phone plugged in at work so the weekend will be the true test for that. I keep Bluetooth, GPS and Wi-Fi on at all times.

Samsung DIVE

Has anybody tried to activate Samsung Dive on their Note? I created the Samsung account but I don't see any options to activate the remote control settings on the note, even though it says in Samsung's site that the options will be enabled automatically when the Samsung account is created.

I got to the samsung site logged in, but then to add my phone, nothing happens.

I came from a windows phone, and microsoft has that feature enabled for all their phones just by going to windowsphone.com and signing in with your live id. and before that, on windows mobile, i had my phone setup with creeper and it got stolen and i wiped it remotely but before i wiped it, i sent it a couple texts telling the thief where he was and that if he didn't return it i was going to call the police. the next morning the phone was sitting on my desk...
I used that Windows phone feature to locate/spy on my kids iDevices have the similar functionality. Not sure why Google left this one out?
DIVE was left out of the i-717 because AT&T offers their own called Mobile Locate and surprise...they charge for it! It is an add-on to the phone insurance.

Really, no love Cerberus?
You can snap pictures from the website control panel with the phone's front camera and have them emailed to you, or record audio from the mic and send that.
You can make it so any SIM put in the phone that isn't the current SIM will only call a phone number you specify.
You can wipe whatever you want from remotely and track the exact location of your phone at all times.
It is AMAZING!

Cerberus is one of the first things I install on a new phone. If you are rooted you can install it into the rom and it will survive factory reset. It blows away anything else out there right now. You can record audio, video, have it call a number, take a picture, snap a screenshot. Remote lock / wipe. It is just amazing.

There's an app called "Phone Info" that will let you do it but it hasn't been on the play store in some time (you'd have to hunt around to find an APK online).
There's another called "4G Switch" which is $0.99 on the play store which several people have noted works on the S4. Looks like it's essentially the same app as Phone Info, with a few changes.
I haven't used either so can't comment on their functionality but worst case you could drop a buck and if the paid app doesn't work, just refund it.
Think you can enable some scripts by Terminal in certain ROMs like Hyperdrive

GPS SUCKS & Samsung swipe too!

The GPS in this phone xxxxx (Mod edited). Best accuracy is 33 ft. WTF! I have a better one in my Kenwood TH-D72 ham radio handy talkie. When on maps or navigation it shows me off the road and constantly reroutes you. When on maps it shows you on the road and moves you back to a place you've already been and then back to where you are.
The Samsung keyboard swipe to type function mispicks the words even when I delete and make absolutely sure I swipe over the correct letters even when I use the S-Pen.
It's a shame because otherwise it's a great phone. Big screen, blazing fast and takes great pics too. I even tried to switch to Swype and same result.
I paid big bucks for this phone off contract. If KitKat doesn't fix this I may sell it and go back to my Motorola DROID RAZR HD MAXX. At least it's bootloader is unlocked.

I'm on my second Note 3, since I had an inferior case on my first, and managed to smash the Led screen.
BOTH Note 3's plus my wife's Note 3 lock onto GPS very fast, with accuracy spot on. No issues at all. We also use SwiftKey.
I'd suggest cashing in on your warranty, and downloading the SwiftKey trial. You seem to have the rare less than par device, plus SwiftKey has a 30 day fully functioned trial.
Unless you are trying to navigate through thick trees, or skyscrapers..
Just get the Google keyboard from the play store or it may be on your phone already so you can just enable it and use it within the "Language & Input" in Settings.
I find the Google keyboards swype function to be far more accurate than Samsung's keyboard.

GPS - fixed by unexpected way
Just telling my story hoping it may helping someone out in the same situation...
I have asked for help and searched the forums, web, etc... My issue has been that GPS does not lock and takes longer and longer to lock or find location...and it was a growing problem that was not there when I first got my phone!
-- Purchased when first came out
-- No case ever to say...I am a "Monk" character never been dropped...still looks mint today...very well cared for
-- No kids touch this phone
-- Rooted with HD first and Beans roms
From MI9 had no GPS issues as OEM and with simple root. Had no GPS issues with MJ7 with custom room. MJE is where it all started and knowing my device was spot on before MJE I just felt it was software nothing with the device hardware. However I did OBIN back to MJ7 stock and it seemed to work but only tested outside the house not on the road (but this same test failed on me prior before OBIN..so thinking all was OK I proceeded to flash a clean HD rom. Again the GPS issues was there. Flashed Beans and still had the GPS taking a long time to lock. I read on forums and tried:
-- Tightening down all the screws
-- Remove the device back and lift up on the GPS antenna pin connections (really for Note 2 but tried anyway)
-- TOPNTP to modify the gps.conf file app (but I manually used Derek custom gps.conf file which he has his own APGS server he updated daily)
-- Purchased GPS Status app & still using the custom gps.conf file
Now GPS Status did work but I had to open it, do the AGPS download via the app, get a lock...and THEN open MAPS, RunKeeper, etc which for my jogging app would not lock GPS until I did GPS Status first... Something I never had to do on MI9 nor MJ7 nor MJ7 with custom rom. They always locked quickly and I did not use GPS Status.
Well Thiurs I got pissed! On Beans (not a Beans or HD rom issue) I could not get lock and needed to get on road. GPS Status usually works but 7min past waiting on lock and Maps to give me location I rebooted the damn device. To no advantage still could not get lock doing it all over again. Later, I called Verizon and they said my problem was in Settings, Mobile Networks that it should not be on "Global" but LTE\CDMA... Well while on the phone walked outside with new setting and still no damn lock. So they overnighted a replacement I got Fri and personally I hate certified service phones since mine was new!
Got phone Fri morning:
-- Powered new phone which was MJE firmware OEM
-- Tested GPS driving to a few places...spot on locks
-- Return home and begin to root and flash backup of Beans rom I was using on old phone
-- Successful getting quick locks for driving Fri afternoon and night
-- Still successful getting quick locks Sat morning, afternoon and jogging (opened RunKeeper it locked without using GPS Status first)
I am STILL testing but GPS locks are back as they use to be. I have NEVER done anything to my device to warrant a hardware problem but it looks from what I read and did not believe about phone replacement...Seems I had an hardware issue. Keeping in mind I put back on the new phone the EXACT same rom from a Safestrap backup I made just before switching...and the old phone was properly & correctly put on the MJE firmware.
Crazy....
GPS is perfect on the note 3 until you start adding big bulky cases, really the aluminum cases to be exact, do you have a case on your phone ?

My GPS is wonky about 90% of the time. I was trying to use it today and would never get a solid lock on my position. It showed me about 50ft away from the road I was on, the screen was flipped, something it has never done, and was all kinds of weird.

Keeping the S7 Without Unlocked Bootloader

I was very excited to see a sale on the S7 at Best Buy and was finally ready to relieve my nearly 4 years old Note II of duty until I came here to look into what mod options were available... only to find that there aren't any yet.
So, for those of you who have bought the S7 and have NOT returned it, what reasons have you decided to stick it out? Were you particularly deep in modding your phone before? Are you just happy with the few tools that have come out so far? Are you holding out hope for an unlocked bootloader eventually?
I haven't completely decided against it, but I'm seriously second guessing staying a Samsung customer after this fiasco. My Note II has been solid and a best, no replacements since I bought it on release, but I am way too into my modifications that I'm not sure I'd enjoy upgrading yet or seeking a third option.
Well I really enjoyed running custom ROMs in the past especially Aosp ones, but the fact that my s5 has cracked screen I not sure I'd want to go back. Since I got the free VR which would be worthless without either S6 or S7, I'm kind of stuck. I mean S6 is no go for me no SD card also IP rating. That aside it isn't to bad I was able to get themed pretty close to Aosp without root and I still have faith that we'll unlock this beast eventually. Samsung can't keep us down.
I came from a G3, before that a Note 2. I came back to samsung because I didn't like anything about the G5 and I was tired of some of the problems in LG's software on the G3. I had both devices rooted running debloated stock roms. The main reason I root is to get rid of apps I cannot uninstall and to block ads while sticking with a stock based rom to be able to use the features the manufacturer built into the software. I am disappointed that we may never get root or an unlocked bootloader as I would like to be able to uninstall some apps like facebook, FB messenger, the 4 amazon apps and the 3 sprint apps I cannot get rid of as well as run an ad blocker.
While I still cannot get rid of ads, There are ways to disable the apps using an app called "Package Disabler Pro" or you can use Gatesjuniors' Debloater which is what I'm using because its one less app on my phone, you can find it here http://forum.xda-developers.com/android/software/debloater-remove-carrier-bloat-t2998294 . I have Nova launcher installed and have no lag, call quality is great, mobile signal strength and speed is better than I've ever had with Sprint. My wifi reception is equally as impressive as I still have very usable wifi 30+ yards away from my router through the walls in my house. My G3 had trouble connecting 10 yards away (another reason I came back to samsung).
All that being said, this is the first phone I haven't rooted within the first week of getting it and honestly, other than an annoying ad occasionally (as most of my apps and games are paid for so I don't get many ads anyway) I really see no need to root this phone at this time. I've had the S7 for 3 weeks now and I love it. Wireless charging is awesome as I haven't plugged it in to charge since the first week and on that note the fast charging is even more awesome as it will charge 50% in 30 minutes. The peace of mind in the fact that if it gets wet its no big deal. The screen and performance is phenomenal. Its so much easier to handle than the Note 2 was, I don't miss the heft of that phone at all. If you can get the Gear VR I highly recommend it, I was not a believer and thought I would just sell it but decided to try it to see if it was any good and it made a believer out of me, the Gear VR is awesome and a lot of fun.
Get the S7, it is a huge upgrade to the Note 2 and well worth it in my opinion.
I've kept it because the only reason I rooted in the first place was the free hotspot, and it's not essential that I have it, so I can go without. I'm also keeping it because it's a huge improvement in specs over the S5 I had before.
Free stuff
I came from a SGS4. Heavily modded, custom rom etc... As someone mentioned earlier, the main reason I rooted was for free hotspot activation (and some other free -cough- stuff). For now, I have the hotspot activated for free without root. Happy as a clam. The phone is fantastic. Even if/when Sprint forces an update and locks down my hotspot mod, I love the phone and would not switch to something else. I can still put free -cough- stuff on my phone without root. I'm sure someone will eventually find a way to root the device.

Well Sprint just pushed an update that gets rid of the ability to mod the phone to use hotpot. The update became available yesterday and it locks down the APN settings to where they are greyed out.
I have had no such update. I just did the mod 1 hour ago. Working fine.

You can still block ads without root. adguard.com . Uses a local vpn to filter out the ads. It does consume a small amount of data to do so. Might not be the best choice on low data plans.
I know with the Sprint unlimited anything plan, they made mobile hotspot up to 3GB included. I don't actually use it much anyway, so that may be enough for me. I'm still so very on the fence.

Ahhh, gotcha. Then I guess I'm out of luck on that one. Best Buy has a pretty good promo for $99 right now with a free wireless charger, so I guess that eats the cost of the VR if you wanted to buy it. I'm thinking about it.

Well I was. Bestbuy did not want to honor the $99.99 sale price with 2 year activation (my current contract had expired at the beginning of the month) as they said Sprint wouldn't let them. So I chewed Sprint up and down until they pushed the upgrade through at $99.99. So I did tge activation swap through the website. Now I see I'm on a DIFFERENT unlimited plan. Some kinda "framily" plan for $30. Oh well. Still unlimited

You can still block ads without root. adguard.com . Uses a local vpn to filter out the ads. It does consume a small amount of data to do so. Might not be the best choice on low data plans.

Thanks, I'll give that a shot. I have unlimited data so it's not a worry.
I use about 100gb a month on data with hotspot. S7 not my option anymore. LG G5 is next.
Yeah, I think I'm going to hold off as well at this point. I want to see if they will bend under pressure.

T-Mobile has announced the LG G5 will have a locked bootloader. Will have to see if other providers will follow suit.

What?! Oh man... Tmo and sprint are the unlocked ones.. But if tmo is locked, more likely sprint will...
Seriously?! What are these companies thinking? Do they not realize how much of their sales is due to the modifiable side of their phones?

That is exactly why I moved from iOS to android. The ability to take 3rd party apps, straight out of the box and modify bloatware, the ui, etc...

The first part of this post will be my response to the OP post. The second part will address the user I quoted.
I actually bought this phone because I am losing my desire to mod/flash/root etc. While it's been fun the past 8 years or so, I've realized it has consumed TONS of my time. I can honestly say it got to the point where when I got home, the first thing I would do is get on my laptop or the app and open XDA. Next thing I know I'm flashing a new ROM only to find out in a few days or so that it lacks "this" feature or "that" feature isn't working properly and I'm back on xda looking for something different. It gets old having to reflash the phone because I "couldn't hear outgoing calls" or incoming mms wasn't working. I know seasoned xda members know as well as I that once you tweak one thing it inherently messes up another. Anyhow, this phone is a beast without root. No need for overclock, or even flashing a CM/AOSP rom. If I wanted that I would've picked up a Nexus. As a previous usuer mentioned, adblocking is possible without root as well as hotspot. I'm happy with my S7 and keeping it. Now regarding the user's quote, Samsung is the driver of Android sales worldwide. They want to keep that spot and unfortunately the vast majority of their users don't care about root. Samsung is taking on Apple knuckle to knuckle and in order to win over customers from Apple, they will have to provide the same level of security and functionality as Apple which means no root. Winning over Apple customers will yield them way more profit in the short and long run vs. providing unlock for their "power" users. I'm not cheering on Samsung to continue making their devices "NSA" friendly, but in a world of ever increasing security threats particularly of the cyber nature, rooting will become increasingly more difficult as OEMs try to gain their customers' confidence in the security of their mobile devices.

S9+ TMobile not rootable?

I've searched and just got my new S9+ coming from LG and forums here are so different in gathering info. Is this variant rootable yet? If so can someone post a link... In the mean time I'll keep searching. :silly:

Nope it's not, and will be a loooooooong time before it is.
Well? After much research I was able to disable bloatware, get YouTube ad free and some more all without root. Honestly? This phone is good enough not to root really. I usually rooted to get a kernel to speed things up and get less lag, amazingly there's no need. Also for Xposed but I also don't see the need. So waiting for something that now I feel is not needed is ok. But having the itch to root will always exist. Lol

I'm on Snapdragon directly from T-mobile in the US.
Very little bloatware installed. And what was there I was able to uninstall easily including Facebook.
This was the first device I've owned that I've been able to do this without root.

I have a question if i was to purchase a Samsiung galaxy s9+ from samsung themselves, will i be able to root the phone at that point.
I have been on iPhone for a long period of time because it is so easy to Jailbreak a phone once the program comes out, its just one click and done. I always recalled android phone goes through steps in order to be rooted, and i do mean really long steps, and the smallest mess up would brick the phone, i know now that the bricking the phone is a lot less likely. But it is still hard to root the phone..
Also back in the day, all android phones can be rooted except for Verizon Android phones. Now all carrier Samsung galaxy phones cant be or takes time to root. things have changed in the community i see.

With iphones you have to jailbreak just to get it semi-useful. My tmo s9+ had hardly anything already on it that wasn't easily removable. No need for root IMO.

Well, the main reason why I want to root is to find a bypass for the tethering. Example: On the iPhone there is a application called (Tetherme) it pretty much bypass the tethering provision so that the hotspot usage shows up as Phone usage not Hotspot usage.
I want to do that on the Samsung Galaxy s9+, I want to use the native tethering connectivity that is on the device and have it show up as phone usage not hotspot usage.
What I'm going to end up doing is selling my phone in order to purchase one directly from Samsung.
