Hi everyone. I have a question about removing hyperdrive. I used surge's method of upgrading to 4.4.2 with root. I did this because I knew that Hyperdrive ran on the 4.4.2 base. I installed hyperdrive on the stock slot because a few forums said when installing hyperdrive after using the method I used to upgrade to 4.4.2. My question is that I'm trying to now uninstall hyperdrive and go back to stock. Is there a way to do this while keeping root and not having to use Odin? Because that was a long process. Thank you in advance!

You can use Odin to flash a factory stock 4.4.2 image, then use Towelroot to root that. One long step (Odin Kit Kat), then a very quick root.

Thank you for answering! But I have another question. Am I also able to install Hyperdrive 17 by downloading it, wiping my stock slot, and then installing it?
I'm normally one to be able to do research on my own, but i'm deployed and on a satalite internet connection that is slower than what is considered acceptable by even the old 56k standards, so I come here for help.
In a few weeks i'm going to be hitting port again and I'd like to update my phone from Hyperdrive 14 into the new hottness HD 17. Every guide that I've found online for the installation of HD17 says that it needs to be NC5, or at least MK2 baseband install. I'm currently on MJ7.
Do I need to update from MJ7 to MK2, and then to NC5 just to install HD 17? Or can I just update from MJ7 to NC5 and install HD17. As far as the end of the NC5 upgrade guide, what is the point of reverting from NC5 to MK2? Just lots of questions - I'm also fairly new to SafeStrap - the way that I understand it, only the stock rom slot is working; could I just install HD17 and forgo the NC5 install, or is this mandatory?
Thanks for the info in advance. You've all helped me out lot.
yup, gotta be on nc5 to use any kitkat-based Safestrap ROM
also sorry about the internet, might want to try tethering using the phone. sounds like 4G will be a lot faster than what you have right now haha

No you do not need to upgrade to MK2 from MJ7 before installing HD 17.1
If you use Surge's instructions you can upgrade everything but your bootloader to NC5 and that way, if you ever needed to downgrade, you still can.
Here is his method: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2726868
Then once you have NC5 installed, follow instructions from HD thread to get to 17.1
Awesome. I'll give this a shot once I get to port, and to an internet connection. I was very confused as to the point of Surge's post - why not just flash NC5 and be done with it - But that's awesome, able to keep my MJ7 bootloader with all the benefits of NC5 firmware. Thanks for the info and the help!
Hopefully this will happen soon - Never really know when we'll pull in. I'll reply when it happens though! Thanks again!
Hello all, I did a quick search and found nothing new on here.
I have a Vz I545 4.3 (MK2) that I rooted years ago. I never got the OTA update to 4.4.2 because I was rooted.
It asks everyday and I just tell it later.
I am ready to wipe my phone and install 4.4.2 (hopefully rooted).
Hoping its fairly easy. Any help appreciated.
It's as easy as downloading the nc2 or nc5 full wipe tar file to flash through Odin. After that you just need to download towelroot, selinux changer, and Safestrap 3.72/3.75 then you're good to go!
[Q] New (replaced/refurbished) I545, with MK2. Quickest route to root & up to date?
Hi.
I just received my replacement/refurbished verizon S4, I545. It came with the MK2 baseband on it
On my previous S4, I recall having to downgrade to MK2, then updating to NC2, then NC5. I do still have my notes and bookmarks from when I previously went through this whole procedure, however it appears that the bookmarks have been revised for newer, more relevant builds.
I am going to begin researching this and I will edit this thread accordingly. Until then, if anyone has any links handy, it would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you
Also, here is my previous thread

You should be able to update to NC5, this is using odin, root with towelroot, and rom with TW based roms only using Safestrap. Many people are seeing success using SS 3.75 with the ability to load roms into the rom slots.
Edit: Forgot to mention how to root if you decide to update to NK1.
1) Root MK2 with saferoot.zip
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2565758
2) Once MK2 is rooted; proceed to upgrading to which?
On my previous phone, I was on NC5, and I began to get the atrocious update nag screens which are almost impossible to dismiss. If verizon wants you to take the update *that* badly, then perhaps there is might be something that too good about NC5?
Looking for something that is beyond NC5, lets see what I can find...
MDK? -- older, unlocked bootloader, unfortunately we cannot go back to this, as per: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2578569
NC5
NG6 - apparently, this version is less ideal for us, best to stay on NC5.

http://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-s4-verizon/general/downgrade-ng6-to-nc5-t2910933
NK1 http://forum.xda-developers.com/gal...-to-root-i545vrufnk1-4-4-2-12-1-2014-t2959613
rooting NK1 involves getting to rooted NC5, then flashing a NK1?
Dunno about this, however it seems best to upgrade from MK2 to NC5 as of right now.
Going to use this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2726868
Then I will install Safestrap 3.75 from here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=56030788&postcount=2281
Problems
The thread that discusses updating to NC5 from MK2 is very ambiguous and confusing.
####################################################################################################
2) Installed Safestrap 3.72 from that "AT&T" thread.
Following Surge1223's thread, and just ignoring the NC2 crap, and I have updated to NC5.
I also had to use jfltevzw-NC5-modules.zip to get wifi working.
3) ROM - I installed "empty galaxy ROM" taken from here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2768183
So to recap, from MK2
1) root it with saferoot.
2) install the 3.72 safestrap
3) follow surges thread and get to nc5
4) once on NC5, reboot and install new rom (might have been able to skip installing the deodexed NC5 like surge mentioned)
I will revise this later

You really could've just done this
1) Odin to nc5. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2735172
2)Towelroot, install safestrap
3) Flash your rom.

That would have been much easier.
I suppose with my method, I am still on the MK2 bootloader? I realize that in theory, it is better for me to be on the earliest bootloader as possible, should we ever unlock a MK2 or newer bootloader, however in all practicality, should I just Odin to NC5?
Also, I should mention that post #3 in this thread was nothing but a copy and paste of my notes that I had been typing out throughout the process, which I had completed the majority of before Slowbalt posted.

There is a minimal (like extremely minimal...) benefit to being on an earlier bootloader version. However, to be honest, there really isn't much hope for a unlocked bootloader at this point. Being on NC5 means you don't have to do the whole process of upgrading every time you wipe.
After going through a whole heap of frustration: see below, I have updated my setup:
1) Updated Safestrap 3.72 to Safestrap 3.75: Safestrap-I545-3.75-KitKat-A03.apk with md5 checksum of f57032ba40e9e6ecf54a0da3cf27d3a9
2) Flashed Empty ROM EGR_TWUI_329.zip with md5 checksum of b704e221dd67f050bce266e0b7a7eb4f
3) Fixed WiFi by flashing jfltevzw-NC5-modules.zip with the md5 checksum of ca4d842186ed9f17ca03dcc2c4ef7815
4) Applied theme S4_CheekyTW_v1.zip with md5 checksum of e78d35755141152e2a2ac0eab98e3a2f
5) Applied theme vr_Dark_TW_Menu_BG_TopBars_AND_EGR_SystemUIapk.zip
6) Flash dialer theme EGR_DIALER_MMS.zip with md5 of d181e6989d043685f39d2838f6512bf3
7) Flash I545VRUFNK1_Tether_Unlock___Toggle.zip with md5 of 260de779ecac37c9461e459b78dd21fc to enable tethering
Questions/ToDO:
Determining whether to upgrade to NG6 or NK1 base/kernel?
If so, I need to figure out what gigilie is suggesting to do to update from MK2 bootloader (NC5 everything else) to NG6, or these new NK1 modem, kernel, etc.
Frustrating Experience I encountered:
1 - dOPE-PSOA 4.4.4-A HYBRID WITH PURE AOSP - I wasn't able to get Wi-Fi working. Seems like nobody else was able to either. I have a few zip archives of various WiFi kernel modules that I tried to flash. Nothing worked. There very well may be some zip archive that I could have flashed to get things working... It also would go into a bootloop if I installed nova launcher. I even tested this out after a full wipe and installing the Nova launcher apk through adb, and then rebooting.
2 - ChaosROM - Garbage. It not only bootlooped after doing a full wipe, but it took out safestrap as well. I had to odin back to NC5 and use towelroot to root. What the threads don't explicitly say is that you need to install SuperSU after you run towelroot. And then, Safestrap 3.75 will not install the safe-bootloader. I even logged into the google play like others suggested and still nothing. I had to find my old version of Safestrap 3.72 from one of my old TitaniumBackups, as the Safestrap 3.72 download links in this forum were dead. Apparently there's a magic combination of options that you must select to get it from softbricking. Check out this post where he tried several times to get ChaosROM working to no avail.
3 - CarHD 32.1S - Well, it didn't destroy safestrap. It looked kinda neat, sometimes. I wish they had spent as much time making sure the more important features worked as they did on theming and doing things like moving the clock to the top left of the status bar. Thanks, but no thanks.
Apparently I am no longer on the MK2 bootloader, and I am on the NC5 bootloader.

Just a question. Do I have to do throw this if I just want to be rooted so I can do TB and remove/disable bloatware? Thanks
I'm on hyper drive rom MJ7 I've been lost and away and never bothered to keep updating the phone. So how would I update the phone from 4.3 MJ7 to the latest version of Android keeping root? Keep in mind I'm using safe strap at the moment.

You would have to flash the nc5 FULL Wipe TAR with Odin, then use the safe Update to OC1(Munix_ri)
http://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-s4-verizon/general/i545vrugoc1neuteredfullodin-tar-t3098956
Okay sounds good as long as I keep root!
So just to make sure, I would Odin to NC5 and then root with the toleroot than upgrade to OC1 through safe strap or stay on NC5 and use safe strap to flash hyper drive. Because there is no custom rooms for OC1, and if I use safe strap to get to OC1 I'd lose safe strap and I'd have to deal with flashfire.
Right?

OC1 doesn't even have access to flashfire, there is no root. Your first assumption is correct:
-Odin to nc5
-Towelroot, Busybox, Safestrap
-Either do the Neutered tar through Odin(which lets you go back to nc5 and have root on oc1)
OR
-Use Echoe ROM(which has some bugs that will not be fixed due to development abandonment.
Okay thanks so just to make sure after I obtain root on NC5 update to OC1 using Odin to keep root. I think I'm just going to stay on NC5

Yeah. I think the Neutered .tar needs MDK though.
