Help upgrading to latest version of Android. - Verizon Samsung Galaxy S 4

I'm on hyper drive rom MJ7 I've been lost and away and never bothered to keep updating the phone. So how would I update the phone from 4.3 MJ7 to the latest version of Android keeping root? Keep in mind I'm using safe strap at the moment.

You would have to flash the nc5 FULL Wipe TAR with Odin, then use the safe Update to OC1(Munix_ri)
http://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-s4-verizon/general/i545vrugoc1neuteredfullodin-tar-t3098956

Okay sounds good as long as I keep root!

So just to make sure, I would Odin to NC5 and then root with the toleroot than upgrade to OC1 through safe strap or stay on NC5 and use safe strap to flash hyper drive. Because there is no custom rooms for OC1, and if I use safe strap to get to OC1 I'd lose safe strap and I'd have to deal with flashfire.
Right?

OC1 doesn't even have access to flashfire, there is no root. Your first assumption is correct:
-Odin to nc5
-Towelroot, Busybox, Safestrap
-Either do the Neutered tar through Odin(which lets you go back to nc5 and have root on oc1)
OR
-Use Echoe ROM(which has some bugs that will not be fixed due to development abandonment.

Okay thanks so just to make sure after I obtain root on NC5 update to OC1 using Odin to keep root. I think I'm just going to stay on NC5

Yeah. I think the Neutered .tar needs MDK though.

[Q] Wanting to upgrade to Kit Kat

Hey guys, I'm currently on the Verizon S4 running ME7.
I want to upgrade to MK2, so that way I can install Safestrap and then upgrade to NC5 so I can keep root and install a custom ROM. How the heck do I upgrade to MK2? Is there a full wipe file that I need, or should I do a no wipe? I can't really find ODIN files for MK2. I currrently have modified many system things and have uninstall some Samsung apps with Titanium Backup. Should I use one of the ODIN files for MK2 for a full wipe and install that, and then I will be on a stock version, and then I can root and Safestrap MK2 and then use a keep root method for NC5?
Any help would be appreciated. I just mainly need help upgrading from ME7 to MK2 so that way I can root and install safestrap and use the keep root method for NC5. The ROM I want to install is Echoe for Verizon: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2702592

Here is MK2 Odin files for you. Try the no wipe one first. Then make sure you read up a bit if you haven't already on upgrading to NC5 and keeping root. Staying on MK2 isn't a had idea really until more ROMs are available for NC5.

Download:

Flash using Odin's PDA slot (AP in Odin v3.09+)
Note:

Do not attempt to flash the above file!! (Hate to say it but if you were interested in root access you should have waited before taking the ota).
2. The most common cause of an Odin flash failure is a bad usb port or cable. Please check before reporting a failure!

Sending in for Replacement
Some time ago, the microphone stopped working on my phone. I decided to finally start the process of getting a replacement, but VZ wants to do all these OTA tests. They can see that I "may" have rooted my phone. I managed to convince them that the OTA update to 5.0.1 may have been bugged(I did not take the OTA. I follows the steps in @muniz_ri's thread [How-To] Update to I545_OC1 - 5.0.1 and KeepRoot). Since I would need to get the phone 100% stock before sending it in anyway, I want to do that before I call them again. Will this get the phone close enough that they won't care or can't tell? The only thing this leaves out is the OC1 BL, right?

Yes, the first bold paragraph says it has the NK4 bootloader.

The absolute latest is OC1. But upgrading to that would not allow you to downgrade to anything lower. OC1 was released in 2 phases. First NK4, then the actual OC1. NK4 was released to prepare NK1. You can safely upgrade your BL to NK4 and still downgrade your system to a lower version.
Ok well I'm still on NK1 now and I'm rooted. Is it ok to flash this OC1 with Odin? Does it wipe the device?
Is this the same ROM that is in your other thread (http://forum.xda-developers.com/gal...o-update-to-i545oc1-5-0-1-keeproot-t3096558)?
The only difference being that this is an ODIN tar instead?
How do I confirm that my BL is NC5? Doesn't show in About Phone.

[Q] Upgrade to 5.0.1 on MDK?

Is there currently any ROM that works on MDK, let's me keep root, and doesn't update the boot loader so I can always revert back? For 5.0.1, that is.
I second this. All of the flash instructions seem to assume you're using Safestrap, or coming from a build later than mdk.
For the "lucky" few of us still running rooted mdk, is there a rooted OC1 zip we can flash in recovery, the old-fashioned way?

Rooted Galaxy s4

This was rooted a long while back and now with the OTA update I have i545vrufnk4 baseband version but I can't install lollipop. I don't care about lollipop I just don't want to be prompted to install it when it doesn't work (thanks knox).
What are my options? Odin? Rooting? I tried towelroot and it didn't work this time around. please help
bump
Well, nk4 doesn't have root. NK4 is the first step to lollipop. The qfuse isn't blown yet, so you can full wipe back to nc5, get root and safestrap. You can't disablet he update thing without root, so you have two options:
A)Odin back to nc5, then disable the OTA
B)Live with the notification
-I believe if you hold on the thing, click on settings, and disable the notification, that will stop any popup. I haven't done this in a while though.

When I turn on the phone it shows custom with the unlock picture so I thought that meant the fuse was blown. I
No, it won't tell you if the qfuse is blown. That just means it detects root access on boot, and the system status is unnoficial
Just downgrade to NC5. There is a thread for that. Install towelroot and then using TB, freeze SDM. Good to go.

Towelroot doesn't work anymore for me. It did once but now it fails(this phone isn't currently supported) and I tried several codes. Is there something I should know before I try odin?
I guess what I'm asking is why do I need to root?
Secondly, does odin no longer work if I upgrade to lollipop down the road?
What firmware should I put on this phone?
You will have to use Odin to go back to nc5, with a FULL WIPE
Then, you have several options:
1)Use the stock deodex lollipop with Root
2)Echoe ROM v49(no dev though, so no more updates)
3)Super6(s6 port)

I saw something about that, I was reading the Odin guide where they said after odin shows the green "passed", then you need to reboot the phone holding the power home and volume up keys and pick the "factory reset / full wipe" option. if you don't do that does that brick the phone?
appreciate the help, it's my first time but I'm picking this up quick
No. The Full Wipe will wipe it for you and it will automatically reboot the phone. It will be in an "out of box" state.

I'm sorry I just feel like I'm missing some key concept here.
So just to clear up my understanding here are the following firmwares avaiable for my galaxy s4 i-545
i545vrugOC1 5.0.1
i545vrufnk1 4.4.2
i545vrufng6 4.4.2
i545vrufnc5 4.4.2
i545vruemk2 4.3
i545vrudmi1 4.2
My phone says it's running VRUFNK4. I'm guessing that's the temporary OTA (1/2) upgrade.
Am I right?
Is that why you want me to flash NC5 and is that why if I do a factory reset using the home and volume keys it won't do anything but just keep me where I am now? Why not an NG6 or an MK2 for that matter?
I'm sure a lot of people have these questions I just can't find it anywhere. I just don't want to brick my phone (is that permanent?)
nk4 is part one of two yes.
Even if you do a factory reset, it still won't update because you once rooted, and knox takes note of this, and will block any OTA. nc5 is the last firmware that had towelroot working. ng6 doesn't work with towelroot. I don't see why you would go any further back since the ROMs are based off of nc5.

Ok that makes sense, I thought for a minute the phone wasn't capable of going back to an earlier version because it had a different boot loader? is that not the case?
That is only the case once you go to 0C1. It is not the bootloader. It is because a physical qfuse is blown, and it has two values, 0(unblown) and 1(blown). If it reads as one, no going back to an older version.

!! Help unbrick OF1 and keep root?

Apologies if this has been posted, but I couldn't find it. Thanks for any help!
Before softbricking, my VZW S4 had OF1 with root (rooted while on OC1 and flashed via FlashFire to OF1).
While trying to set up new payment cards with Android Pay, I tried to temporarily uninstall Xposed framework by flashing the Xposed uninstaller with FlashFire. Android Pay apparently checks for su and Xposed and blocks addition of payment cards if present. After flashing the uninstaller, boot sticks on verizon screen.
I did not have a bootloader like safestrap present to restore backups before boot.
I do have a full backup from FlashFire stored to my SD, but I don't know how I can restore it when stuck in boot...
I'm currently downloading Stock OF1 found here http://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-s4-verizon/general/of1-stock-tar-t3216417
...but I expect that will take root from me, if it even works to unbrick it. Then of course, I won't be able to restore my backup via FlashFire...
Any chance I can unbrick and keep root?
Thanks!

I used a similar method to root kitkat ng6 by flashing nc1 kernel rooting and flashing back to ng6 kernal. They're actual Samsung signed kernals so odin should have no issue flashing them. Root using wondershare then flash back to OF1 kernal. There's no downgrading from of1 because your bootloader was flashed to of1 when u updated BUT you should SHOULD NOT WILL BE ABLE TO be able to root it with oc1 kernal and flash back to of1 kernal then proceed to flashfire of1 DeOdexed and xposed it. Don't take my word for it though do your research you could always brick and that's all on you I'm only suggesting what rocks to look under I've read of people having rooted of1 with xposed working. The kernal switch rooting is fairly new to of1 it was common on kitkat
---------- Post added at 08:33 PM ---------- Previous post was at 08:32 PM ----------
In other words you're stuck on of1 but shouldn't be a big deal if u have root and xposed working then you're better off than oc1 because of1 got some bugs fixed over oc1
I had rooted of1 with xposed before I softbricked. Rooted oc1 with kingroot then flashfired the "rooted" deodexed of1 to maintain root and xposed it. It worked but was a little buggy compared to xposed on kitkat. I think I'm just going to hold off anyway. I actually accepted the OTA as a way to futureproof me from messing with it anymore I was spending too much time tinkering.

My rooted oc1 with xposed is running flawless. Battery life is also better than before I soft bricked. Weird. Screw that. I got an s3 on jellybean rooted for backup. I still got unlimited so an unrooted phone is useless to me. I don't have home Internet I tether all day errday
So I softbricked my verizon galaxy s4 of1 bootloader using flashfire to install a rom. It's stuck on the screen with the unlock and custom sign. How did you get your phone back to normal?
Flash the OF1 tar file in Odin. Use the AP slot and make sure it's checked. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=3203361 That's the tar file thread.
