Need to know what would be the best way to root and update to kitkat I have used Odin many times is their a stock rooted 4.4 kitkat rom I can flash
Sent from my SCH-I535 using Tapatalk 2
If your fully stock mk2 right now use saferoot to root let it disable knox when it asks. install safestrap 3.72 then follow the instructions in this thread
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2749660
IMO updating to kitkat isn't really worth it, until there is a native root that is not downgrading and rerooting and then upgrading. and if you want to keep root stay on mk2.

Exactly I'm with him on that one
... Mk2 is where I'd stay unless your extremely comfortable with Odin and troubleshooting.

I have a Verizon S4 and I am on 4.2.2 on an I545 VRUAME7. Is this how to get back to the original before the OTA to be able to unlock the bootloader? I found thisd but not sure if that is what that does http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2289325 I am not rooted right now if that matters and I really don't wanna screw anything up but I really want to be able to flash custom roms
Thanks, Dan
No....the OTA ME7 you CAN NOT go back to before the OTA ME7. You are stuck till someone finds a way.... Sorry for the bad news

You can root me7 tho.

For what you want, you are out of luck. You cannot revert back. You cannot install a recovery. You cannot install a custom rom.

I'm a long time lurker and I use the search function for everything. Can't seem to find what I need.

I'd like to know what proper steps to take to got to mj7,which I believe is the last update.
Any information is much appreciated thank you.

Remove safestrap using the directions in the Safestrap thread (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2441441)
Then follow the "Update to VRUEMJ7 and Keep Root" thread (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2504408)

Don't do it.
Get something that you can flash based on the newer firmware.
If you have safestrap and you like the ability, don't update to MJ7.

I did enjoy the ability, but then I started messing with xposed framework and noticed those tweaks are what I cared for. Touchwiz doesn't bother me and with the touchwiz tweaks it makes it similar to custom rom.
I do however will only go to mj7 if there is root method, which I've read there is..
Thanks for your input.

No, using that method to retain root through the OTA does not use Vroot. I used that method successfully and am on mj7 and have root.
No Chinese stuff

You can keep root through the upgrade.
What happens if you need to flash your device??????
THen you need vRoot.
I'm just saying, I won't move to a new OTA unless there is a reliable root method.
With my luck something goes south and I need to re-root after a flash.

Yes if you were on one of the previous basebands you could take the mj7 OTA and keep root. Like shown here : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2504408
And yea.. As soon as you're on mj7 you're stuck there, no going back. If you had to flash mj7 for some reason after all that, then you would be left with the choice of using those Chinese root methods. But that guide that was already mentioned above by another poster worked prefect for me.

[EDITED BASED OFF FEEDBACK]
Its hard to gather what order and what defines each build for the Verizon Galaxy S4 without a lot of reading. So here is my understanding! Please correct and or add onto this!!!
MDK - Original Build, can replace recovery, rootable
ME7 - 2nd build, cannot replace recovery, rootable, SafeStrap support
MI1 - 3rd build, cannot replace recovery, rootable, Safestrap support (you can install any ME7, or MI1 roms)
MJ7 - 4th build, cannot replace recovery, rootable, Safestrap is not supported
MK? -

MDK - Original Build, can replace recovery, rootable
ME7 - 2nd build, cannot replace recovery, rootable, extensive SafeStrap support
MI1 - 3rd build, cannot replace recovery, rootable, limited Safestrap support due to limited ROM selection* (HyperDrive only?)
MJ7 - 4th build, cannot replace recovery, rootable, Safestrap is not supported
Is it true that you cannot run ME7 Roms on a MI1 device using Safestrap?

No, You can run any ROM on MI1 that suports Safestrap on ME7 & is based on TouchWiz. You would just flash the MI1 kernel modules after you finish installing the ROM.
The only difference between ME7 and MI1 really is that screen rotation is broken on MI1 if you run a custom rom. Also MK2 is the newest build now.

Thanks this helped me greatly. Going to Odin back to MDK after reading this.
What are you on right now? You can't downgrade firmware.

I just got a phone sent back from warranty and it's currently running on the MI1 firmware you can still used xposed framework and stuff if i were to root it right? Would you advise rooting now, or at what stage of firmware?
If you're in MI1 I wouldn't upgrade, it's the last build that you can still run safestrap on.

So i can follow the MI1 root instructions and install safestrap , but will this void my warranty? i heard something about how something like a code change triggers a signal on their servers or something,to void warranty but is that with Knox?
Rooting your phone is technically voiding warranty, although there are ways to get back to complete stock. No servers are triggered and the rooting instructions will have you getrid of knox.

there is just so much stuff in the op i am lost. can i get some help please.

Hi all, I got a couple questions. I'm currently still on 4.3, running a safe-strapped Rom (Galaxy s4, VZW). I'd like to upgrade to KK.
Is the latest firmware available OTA still NC5?
What method will I need to upgrade, OTA or flash stock? Since I'm rooted, is an OTA even an option? I do have SuperSU pro's survival mode (I heard that worked for a couple people). I'm guessing otherwise I'd have to Towel root.
Finally, I assume I should delete the custom ROM slot and factory wipe my stock slot before updating. Will doing a reset affect safe strap, or will it leave it alone?
Thanks!

Thank you for the link, and everything else you've done around here, Bob. I read around a little but I couldn't figure this out: do I have to use Surge's method to upgrade or can I take an alternative route (in guessing Odin) , now that towel root exists?
I'm hesitant only bc I tried to use his downgrade /upgrade methods on a different phone and had some problems. Thanks.

Nvm, I'm going to try to giglie's method. Guess I'm going to wipe my 2nd Rom slot and factory reset my stock slot. Hope I'm on the right track?

You can't use ROM slots with 3.72 safestrap. ROM must be installed to stock slot. Take and research this info.

I went back to stock using Odin. took update, rooted with towelroot installed Safestrap 3.72 . Then installed custom KK rom. All worked without any issues

Thanks for the info. I was just curious, could I do a full unroot/reset (I rooted with saferoot) instead of flashing stock with odin? I mean, same end result, right

I would recommend Odin full wipe tar. This gets your phone 100% stock. It's safe, simple and proven to work.
Watch the videos they help a lot.
I haven't done it the other way!
Don't want to miss lead you.
