Hello!!
I have just purchased a Galaxy 2 and it should arrive Friday or Monday.
I have been using the N900 for around 18 months and absolutely love the FREEDOM of a full Linux stack (Maemo).
Got too old and slow.
Upgrade time. SGS2 time!
Now. Rooting looks relatively easy, but why do you guys install custom roms?
Also, if anyone here can help with a small side question, the N900 has a FULL xterm with all available commands (/bin).
How do I go about getting such commands under android?
On Maemo it was as easy as "apt-get install //missing-command//"
I installed bash on my NItdroid (android on n900) but there are a few commands not available. Nothing special, just things like "history" and Possibly "nano" etc.
I had virtually zero commands on my old Xperia X10 (rooted), which is why I went back to N900. I'm a terminal geek!
Im used to having full Linux repo's.
I can build custom kernels for N900 and other Omap 3 and Omap 4 devices, but they are u-boot kernels, so I have to start learning again!!
Also, is there a terminal program which is green text on black background?? I can only find white on blue! YUCK! not nearly nerdy enough!
More often than not custom ROM's offer much better battery life and are faster and have many many added features which stock ROM's do not have, also most custom ROM's will not have Samsung bloatware in them which again will save you much battery, you can if you wish apply some themes on custom ROM's,the list is endless.

How's it going? I was on the N900 as well (still use it as my music player) and have recently moved on to the SGS2. speed wise it is miles apart! even thouse the Maemo repos have excellent apps, you do notice the lack of commercial apps for Maemo when using Android
i'm not sure if i have all the answers you require... a simple way to compare custom and regular ROMs:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1219612
Rooting your SGS2 isnt as easy as typing "root" on the N900... you'll have to use CF Root with CWM (i think):
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1103399
and a list of useful Root/ROM links at Android Forums:
http://androidforums.com/galaxy-s2-...guide-updated-12-00-pm-bst-jul-03-2011-a.html
i hope this helps
Thank you both. I'm not really a commercial app/program person.
I'm an active open source user. I love to modify and help with programs. I don't really like apple style control over programs.
I'm going to check those links. Thanks!
I hope I can try bring some of the work I made for Maemo over to android.
Most (90%) is terminal based, seems like droid users love the GUI stuff. Hehehe!
Well I will differ from Post 2. A custom ROM will bring more juice from battery? I don't believe it. It can definitely fix some bugs what the Stock one has, but nothing more than that. Also keep in mind there will be some glitch here and there in a Custom ROM.
I, personally, will never use a Custom ROM.
Regards.

nope, in general this doesn't exist. you have a linux kernel with busybox (assuming you install this along with su), but afaik, that is the limit of what you might expect from a distro. All the apps are running in the android environment, unless you wanted to chroot into something like ubuntu. Whilst I suspect there are some distros that are close to running on an android phone (or netbook, like the ac100) you're no longer running android then.
Try
SL4A (Scripting Layer for Android) as a terminal emulator (shell python etc) and it is fully open source.

so then you, personally, will never know the difference between custom and stock. and yes, you can get better battery life with a custom rom. even a customized stock rom. with my infuse on infused 1.5 i got about 10-15% better battery life over stock.

You answered by yourself.
That's what I meant anyway.
Regards.
there wasn't a question at hand to be answered...
Bit like why do people buy different cars .
Custom rom may add something or remove something from the phone is the basics .
jje
I found from flashing HTC Desire, that the cries of better battery life and performance on custom ROM's were generally over exaggeration or complete nonsense, as I tried loads of custom roms and the battery and performance remained the same throughout.
For this phone, my battery life is awesome anyway, and performance is awesome also. I also seem to be pretty much bug free, also
As for the technical questions and what not in this thread it's also gone over my head lol!
I for one will vouch for better battery and performance for custom roms. It only takes one disabled service/application to improve both categories.
Custom ROM's also add features you won't find in stock ROM's and arguably enhance existing features.
For example there is no reboot function on a stock ROM, but this is just one example. CM7 has a plethora of enhancements that simply rock, on the flip side there is still a few kinks it needs to work out, but with Cyanogen joining the samsung team it wont be long until a production phone comes out with CMx running on it.
You can just install 'Advanced Power Menu' for Reboot feature on a Stock ROM.

I am interested in all of the benefits of using a custom ROM (especially theming) but what about the drawbacks? Don't you lose the optimizations that take advantage of the CPU/GPU?
What else would I be missing out on? I've been trying to find a thread dealing with this topic but am still searching.

Their is no thread as their is no custom rom but many custom roms all with different features .
Why would you lose optimizations unless the custom rom developer decided to remove them and that would not really make sense .
The benefits of using a custom rom are that you can choose one with the features you required .

I know there's no single thread, what I meant was that it was hard to get the info about what the tradeoffs are of using various ROMs.
E.g. some do not have hardware acceleration (browser, video), and others don't let you use the stock app, etc... I've seen that some of the ROMs have made headway and do have hardware acceleration, but that seems to be the exception to the rule.
The only real alternative ROM is Cyanogenmod anyway. Any other rom is just some settings changed with notepad and some icons changed with photoshop.

You use custom roms if you think your cellphone isn't amazingly fast enough or if you think four buttons at the lower panel is to iPhone-ish. I personally love Samsung bloatware...
Hey guys,
I'm on the lookout for a good kernel.
Which kernel you you say is the best for my needs?
Need:
Over-/Underclockable
Over-/Undervolt
GPU renedring
GPU Over-/Underclock
small and compact
Dualboot would be nice aswell, as I am trying to stay stock, but yet I am making a custom ROM... (Both with root)
If you could help me, I would be greatful...
And, maybe you could also give me a few tips, on where to code Android on a Windows Machine, Linux isn't really my cup of tea, you see...
But, it really needs to be flashable via Odin(because the Siyah recovery isn't all that good, but I don't want to downgrade, just get a complete new kernel)

Actually the Siyah recovery is the same one that Hyperdroid stock kernel uses as well and i have not had any complaints with it so far. And another thing. No point me telling you what kernel to go because what might work for me might not work for you.

To be really honest, I'm not an Android fan at all... I'm just using it... And I'm waiting for WP7 to come to the GS II, I've tried nearly every kernel, don't like any of them, really... I'm just asking for help, and it just needs to have the criteria listed in my thread... But still thx

I think you bought the wrong phone if you are waiting for WP7 to come to the galaxy s2 as it is a totally different operating system and no way it can be ported over. So you might as well sell your phone now and go and buy a Nokia Lumnia if you do not like android and want WP7.
So what you just mentioned above the only kernel that i would recommend is Siyah. But you have to give it at least a few days or a week to actually get the full benefit of a kernel not a day or two. But anyway down to you i just thought i give you my opinion. Best of luck anyway

So far in the last hour you've made a thread claiming to stop the custom binary counter increasing, a thread claiming you can root your phone by typing "adb root", and now this.
Today is a new low.

We suggest trying kernels until you find one you like.

I've been using a Samsung Captivate for a while and I see that it has a ton of dev support, but as it is my main cellular device, I don't want to do anything to mess it up. Instead, I'm trying to look for a good Android device that isn't extremely expensive, maybe $75 and below, that has good dev support and allows me to experiment. One thing I would really love to try is putting Linux on it, or installing Backtrack for aircracking. Let me know what you guys think.

Myself I'm pleasantly surprised by Sony and their developer support for the Xperia series. Not only the bootloader is officially unlockable, but they also releases the kernel source code as well as howto's about compiling and building own images. They are also running the standard fastboot protocol allowing both flashing images as well as booting them over USB without the need of flashing. I like not having to be dependent on proprietary protocols and tools for this.
I'm sure there's other manufacturers doing the same as well. Look for unlocked bootloader with full fastboot support if you intent to play around building own images, running GNU/Linux and so. Experimenting with boot images, it's nice if you don't have to re-flash the phone each time you want to test running a new kernel.
And don't forget the AVD emulator included in SDK.
Hi, Xperia people. You probably don't know me, but in the future I might be getting an Xperia U, and looking forward to it!
I couldn't find a XPU Q&A sub-forum, so I decided to post here. You're probably wondering why won't I get an Xperia S, or P? That's because my dad said I could pick a phone, up to £200, and he might get it for me, as a present for getting good grades.
Reading my own post, I probably sound like some stupid trolling, spamming kid who doesn't know a thing about Android, or programming, etc...
Well, I previously owned a HTC Wildfire S, until it got stolen. I do know about bootloader unlocking, rooting, fastboot, specs (CPU, RAM, etc.), Linux, Bootloaders, prgramming (I don't know any programming languages, but I know a bit about them, and I only know the tiniest bit of Java in the world that won't help anyone). I like making ROMS, and flashing them.
So I just wanted to know some basic stuff about the XPU. For example, as soon as I get it, play around with it for a bit, then should I unlock the bootloader, and start flashing some new ROMS (like ICS and stuff), or do I need to do some stuff before that. I want to try lots of ROMS (and I want to make one too. I made a stock like basic HTC ROM once.) I also want to know how to boot into the bootloader, and stuff. I know this all probably has been asked before, but if I get a good enough amount of answers, I might consider transforming the thread into a Noob Guide.
If you own an XPU, can you post links to some good ROMS, ICS, stuff like that. Thanks!!!!
My missus has an Xperia U and it's a fine phone. For the <£200 price, it's unbeatable IMHO. Sure there are compromises, but they are in the right areas, not the wrong ones. Sony got it perfect for that price.:good:
I probably won't be getting it now. I've done more research, and there's a lack of development, so I don't think I want to get it.
get it now!

Indeed, you don't get alot for a £200 budget, certainly not ICS update, dual core, unlockable bootloader and the U's build quality....

there is lack of development indeed, but only because xperia U is using a relatively new chipset. once the devs gotten familiar with it I think development will roll in nicely
Actually I've got my XPU for about 3 weeks, it worked fine for me and no problem was faced.
I'm proud that I can get a such brilliant smartphone with a very reasonable price and the chance for eating ICS:laugh:
Yeah, well it is a good phone. But I can't take my chances and waste money. Even if there is more development, it might not be that much. DoomLord said himself that he might not do any development for XPU as he's already busy with the other XPs and he can barely keep up doing that. Believe me, I'd like to make ROMS myself (I made one for personal use, then distributed it), but I don't think I can just buy a phone to do that, and there aren't many development resources to do that. Also, this sub-forum is kind of "claustrophobic" because it's most of the XP devices together, and it's kinda messy, for me. Sorry guys, I'd like to become part of your community, but I don't think I can. I might just get a Desire HD, if I can, because I know a lot about HTC devices, it's got S-OFF, and plenty of development. It's already got ICS (was in the second page of Portal).
Anyway, thanks for the encouragement.
So i just got this new phone and so far its great. I used to have s vibrant running ics passion ( sadly stolen :\) so i know what i can do and cant do with roms. But i came on to this and found out there are no roms for this phone. Why is that?

Lolz. You cant complain on XDA, after buying a phone without browsing the same phone in XDA. Similary these days new companies are formed only after suitable website name (www.xyz.com) is found.
Anyways this phone is new, only few months, and you need to keep some patience. There are really NO ROM/KERNEL DEVELOPERS HERE at the moment and the main reason is that, the phone have Locked Bootloader and some inbuilt restrictions and no good support from LG. No sources of Kernel is yet shared.
The good news is they (LG) have informed that they will provide unlocked version of Jelly Bean in next few months.:fingers-crossed:so everyone here have fingers crossed and literally doing nothing. May be after JB release more REAL developers will buy this phone and there will be too much of crowd in this forum too.
IMHO: If some strong developers from Optimus 2X forums, would buy this phone and come here, this phone will fly. They made roms and kernels inspite of Locked Bootloader by using some unique bypassing methods.

For guideline, if you want a phone with a lot of android development (custom ROM), look here on XDA which phone have most vibrant community. Generally, Nexus phone and very popular phone (like SG SIII) have a lot of custom ROM.
L9 can be a popular phone though (maybe already). Big IPS screen, 1 GHz dual core with 1 GB RAM with affordable price. Now it depends on LG whether to embrace this community or not (my newbie understanding, it can be very difficult to have firmware/driver for camera, for example).

When we suggest someone any other phone, for ROM issue, it should be in similar category and price range. Well, you know, if one can "easily afford" SGS3 would not even look at L9.
But yes, if LG want people to buy this phone then, they must know what people want.

Stock ROM is enough for me, just give me the ability to root and JB update (dare I hope 4.2? )
For comparison, Samsung went straight to JB 4.1 from GB 2.3 with its S Advance.
Please keep pictures like that away from XDA.
