Agreed....
and once the new image is pushed over to the device, you will need to boot once, then reboot into recovery and wipe all caches and data.
Otherwise, you will have dirty flashed, and you will have stability issues....g
I've never used odin I am reading up on it now as far as I can tell you can't flash zip files so do you know any good roms I can use for my galaxy note?

Odin is used to push stock image files...
And they can be found in the super thread, at the top of the general section.
concentrate on getting a stock build running properly first, then we can worry about custom builds later.

update: after 16 hours with kies decided to give odin one more shot on a different computer. she's back up and running! now to decide with what rom to go with. LOL. thanx guys for the help.
Kies is a fickle pig. Sometimes you're using the wrong cable or usb port.

wow this is unbelievable when it went to reboot and never came back on and it makes the Microsoft Windows keep asking you need to format a disk in drive D before you can use it so itslight turning itself on in 3 seconds in 3 to 4 second intervals. then the computer started loading drivers for a Qualcomm CDMA technologies MSM now where would that come from?
evidently from what i have gathered through many hours of reading and studying, i have hard-bricked my device. like i reported in previous post my computer will recognize it in short intervals. it continues to attempt to download drivers for Qualcomm CDMA.....but disconnects before finishing installing. one time ofter unplugging it left an icon that read.....oh i forget but i immediately looked it up and all reports from xda says that means a hard brick. called service provider and they are sending out new one but what happens when they recieve it and see that it has been rooted? i would really like to keep trying to save the phone i have. any suggestions?
If you are using files from our section, you must have the SGH-I717 device.
You mentioned CDMA. And although present in the chipset, this version of the note is a GSM device, and runs on the following networks respectively.
AT&T, BELL, ROGERS, TELUS, STRAIGHTALK, and carriers in far eastern countries....
Please link us the information on the Odin file you used to repair the device.
It appears you may have inadvertently pushed the wrong image. Perhaps for the N7000 ???
If that's the case, then the device will be hard bricked, and can be repaired using a JTAG repair service.
After you post the rom information, we will know for sure.
A general search for JTAG information will link you to several threads that talk about the service.
I'm sorry you are in this predicament, but for $50 U.S. dollars the device can be repaired.
I do not condone sending the device back under warranty, as it technically is not a defect, and is not the fault of Samsung or the carrier.
Good luck to you Sir.....g

Simply copy/paste the link into your next reply.
then we can see the source for the file.....g
okay i took your advice and sent the replacement back. your right if i can't spend $50 to save my $600 phone i shouldn't start on this road. however as thorough as i usually am i am not very organized. i started installing upgrades and little modifications for my friends and family as a little hobby. then other people started asking me for this and that, so i would help them. so, i have downloaded a LOT of things to my computer (ROM's, MOD's,, etc.) for different android phones and from different forums (now i only use software from xda) and i rarely delete or uninstall anything. needless to say my computer started to look like a teenagers bedroom. i have now started to organize things so i can get a better grip on what i'm doing so i can take this more serious. with that being said i can't remember exactly what file i used to flash with Odin. is there some kind of log that is automatically kept by Odin?.....i have decided to try to use a phone jig to get my phone to at least turn on. is that a wise move? i am studying all there is available on the ins and outs of phone jigs. if that fails i will send off to be JTAG'd. if there is any advise or info that you feel i could use please send my way. thank you.
oh one more thing i do not own any windows phone software or cdma software, but i was connected to my friends nokia lumia 822 hot spot when i flashed my phone. and that's when it went dead and popped up as a cdma devise. could that have anything to do with it? sounds farfetched but so does alot of things that we are capable of doing nowadays.
The jig doesn't work for the note 1, so it's off to the JTAG guy.
ouch! can u plz send me a link i cant seem to find any. thank you.

A clean and reliable PC environment is at least as important as the proper files.
Maintenance is king on any file structure...
And while I feel badly that your device was damaged, I applaud your choice in sending back the replacement device.
People forget that when these phone manufacturers take back damaged product under warranty, they increase the price of new devices to maintain the same profit margin.
We pay at the register for others mistakes.
Again, thank you for your honesty, and integrity in this matter.
And don't worry, the device will return quickly, and will run like new.
We are always willing to assist users here through the lessons we have learned, and it becomes much more gratifying when we know the caliber of the user we help.
You have earned high marks for your choices today, and stand with the most reputable Members of XDA ....IMHO

using fat fingers. I have been avoiding update by hitting LATER since update 1st offered, to keep my options open. I saw a white box with the android guy standing by while it was either unpacking or downloading, so I pulled the battery. Every time I put battery in it goes back to the start of unpacking box.. I believe the phone is completely stock, no roms, mods, etc. I bought it used about a year ago, and am happy with stock so far. It was supposedly factory reset by previous owner. 1st question: Is there another failsafe point after the unpack where I can choose NOT to install update? (that would be so easy, right?) If not, what else can I do to avid update.I am a complete NEWB, but follow detailed directions well. THANK YOU ANYONE AND EVERYONE in advance for any assistance you can provide. Two other pieces of info. 1) Sprint Photon. 2) I have taken it offline so it is not active on network at this moment. Issue occurred last night.

try rsd flashing the 2.3.4 sbf and hope that the bootloader hasn't been upgraded yet. that's all i can think of.
Thanks all for your replies. Being a complete noob at this, can someone point me at a file location and detailed flashing instuctions? I would be
MOST greatful.
I have been doing HOURS of reading here on XDA. Now find I can boot into FASTBOOT mode with all of the various sub menus. What if anything next to try? What is FASTBOOT? a service mode? Is there a recovery/restore built into this thing? If so, I may still have some data available that everyone seemed to be looking for some months ago.....2.3.4 stock and unlocked. TIA
Have you tried a factory reset in the menus.

Confessions of a TRUE NOOBand a chuckle/or sob) from you all. Yesterday, in frustration, I called Sprint, asking for tech support level2. Didn't get there, but level one did check with lvl2, who said, "stores should have ALL versions of software for reinstall" Lvl 1 checks with a large trusted Sprint repair store directly, who says "YEAH we have software" I race over, a half hour before closing. They look at phone. Tried a bunch of things. NO JOY. We only have the software on the server to down load, that MOTO sends Sprint. Current only. 2.3.5 ONLY! SQUARE ONE.
To answer your question, yes, I and others have tried to run factory reset, but it appears to be unpacking the new software as described above, so it has been aborted by pulling battery.
I am ALMOST resigned to 2.3.5 so I can get my phone back. I don't have the time, mental energy, or maybe the smarts some of the you folks do, I live vicariously thru what I read about. Note my join date. Been here since Sprint MM-9000/original Touch/TP2. I'll hang out for a while to see if any miracle ideas appear, and thanks to all.:fingers-crossed:

Well. My curiousty led to a hard-bricked phone
It's definetly official. I am not going to install any more custom roms after this. To make my story breif. I aquired a motorola atrix 2 phone, and had read it could accomdate a custom rom, so I used a one click root method program and the program said it had done its job. I booted into the recovery and installed the rom, which ended in an infinite reboot. Great, so I read more on how to revert back to firmware using rsd lite. I did this, but the battery was dead. so I went out and purchased anther battery, attempted the restore, phone restart, then BOOM. it stayed black and now it wont come on. wtf.
Can any please recommend the proper cable I have to order to get the phone back working>?

Thank you. But an experienced repair guy said my phone wasn't responding to neither the USB jtag or the fast boot. So my phone is dead forever? Should I start digging its grave?
Sure sounds this way, and you shouldn't be doing JTAG through the USB port anyway unless your phone is something special I've never heard of
But in truth rooting your phone won't damage it, it just gives someone the opportunity to do so. I'm a firm believer in rooting all androids so long as they read and understand what they are doing, its very hard to brick a phone if you know what you're doing
So although this phone may be dead forever (unless you find someone who for sure knows the proper way to JTAG it) then still consider rooting your next one, just be sure to completely understand what's going on, and try to stay away from one click roots, its hard to learn anything from this
Best of luck on your next phone
*side note, if you still have warranty and your phone is completely unresponsive chances are you will get your warranty exchange, just play dumb and say "I was playing angry birds and it just froze, now it won't turn on"

I wish I had warranty on this thing. I got it second hand from craigslist. However i've managed to acquire an HTC inspire 4G, what an upgrade from a motorola cliq xt! I would love to install jelly bean on this thing but after messing up the Atrix 2 i'm scared I will F*ck this one up too. I can never find clear and concise instructions on the internet. Every web page I visit, it seems to be someones personal way of doing it. Steps not mentioned, or instructions written for intermediate users. For example, Every video or piece of instruction i've watched on youtube regarding booting into the fast boot on the atrix 2, said something about holding volume up and power button upon booting and I would see something on the top of the screen. However that did not work, First I had to use the volume down and power button, then I would get to this fastboot screen where those recovery options werent available, from there I had to hold both volume buttons down and press the power button twice which would bring me to the recovery options screen. thats just one example, and even then for some reasons I didn't have all the recovery options the instructions spoke of... for example. Very annoying and frustrating. On a side note, is there anyone on this site who lives in the US that can unbrick my atrix 2? The guy who repair phones I took it to said theres a device for 250.00 bucks he's waiting to get that can unbrick any device. However he doesnt have the funds and had gotten laid off work. I am just having a hard time believing a simple soft user error could permanently damage my device forever and that as sophiscated as our technology has gotten there's absolutely no way to revive it.

I can't attest to the videos you saw, but for most androids this is the best site with the most info, I only suggest being sure how to root before you do it, and to understand how the method works as well. When your not understanding this is when bricks happen.
I know it can be lots of reading and lots of questions but in the long run its worth the time
As for the JTAG equipment there are many who have it and you can easily spend less than 250 on getting the proper stuff.
Every logicboard is different so maybe this machine he speaks of has a wide variety of cables that come with it, but he's still paying too much
Anyway, most people seem to charge 50$ or so to JTAG it back, if that's more than the phone is worth to you just sell it on eBay for parts

HERE IS YOUR PHONES FORUM
you will find links to all the guides you need here, always read the stickies in each section, this tends to have the important info you need
then anything your not sure about should be asked in the proper place within this forum for the best answers
example, question on how to root should be asked in the how to root thread for best chance of a good answer, question on how to flash a new radio should be asked in a thread pertaining to this
im sorry but i dont know enough about your phone specificly to help further but hopefully the members in your device specific forum will

Okay. My boss gave me his tablet to fix and he noticed the touchscreen did not work after the ICS update in August 2012 and he missed his warranty by 3 weeks. I have been using these forums for all my phones since my HTC: HD2. I'm obviously not SUPER active and I know everyone wants you READ READ READ before making new threads. But I know how to research, flash, and apply fixes.
I used adb to push the mxt1386_fixer.zip the sdcard and I flashed it. The touchscreen remains in the same state.
MXT1386_Fixer.Zip
I read about the A1 Kernal learning that the fix was also incorporated in it and it also didn't work. I have read and read and read for over a month and nothing I flash helps. It seems that when this model updated to ICS, the problem occurred. I am currently about to downgrade to 3.2 Honeycomb as a last ditch effort because my boss is just going to put it in a drawer.
NOW. Sometimes, the touchscreen works in the home, task manager button area. but what can you do with that? Not a damn thing. There has to be something that can fix this. A lot of people simply got a replacement and I hate to recommend that he needs to just sell it for parts. I never ask for anything. [because I find the answers myself] but I need help for once.
I put CM 4.0.0.4 on it and flashed all I can find. HELP!

4.0.4 provides the best touchscreen capabilities this thing will allow and I realized the touchscreen immediately reacts to my touch on the left and right sides only. the middle is shot. Thought if I could install TouchScreenTune, I could mayyyyyyyyyybe help re-calibrate the dead area and aid this issue. But I think it's done. Because the screen is only dead in the middle, it may just need a new screen and digitizer. With this tablet being very old news now, I doubt it's worth it.
If you can open it, you may need to check if the digitizer is properly connected. What you are describing sounds like a case I came across once here which the owner solved when he opened it and discovered that the connection had somehow shifted and by simply reconnecting the digitizer more firmly, the problem was solved.
Cheers.

It was the digitizer strip the whole time. The whole left side was hanging out of the port. I gave the tablet back to my boss for christmas. He was happy and although he didn't pay me a dime, I was glad to finally fix it. So thank you!
Hello all,
My first post here and I cant really think of a better place where I might get help beyond the endless trawling through the internets. I have already done. My hair is going even more grey!
I have a problem that I just cant work out.. I have already spent far too many hours trying to find ways to fix. So its best I ask here and maybe someone will know how to fix it.
I have a Note 2. Owned it since new and its been fantastic, does everything I need out of a phone and I want to keep it working. I have no interest in buying a new phone ( nor that I can afford it! )
About 6 weeks ago it died after I had let the battery run flat over night. It just would not turn on. I tried all the internet fixes and nothing worked. Sudden death syndrome I think its called. Fairly common with these I have learned.
I bought a new motherboard from China on Aliexpress. Good feedback from seller. $35. It arrived two weeks ago. I swapped the motherboards and the new one worked. I had to change the phone over to English and re-load my favourite apps, exciting.. just like getting a new phone again
It worked well enough and I was happy. I noted that in the about section, plus in the apps draw, SUPERSU. I looked this up and figured that maybe the main chip had been rooted. Possibly that the motherboard was atually a fixed secondhand one, possibly they use another chipset that needs rooting to work? I don't know but it worked so I left it.
One thing that did annoy me was that when I connected my phone via USB to the laptop (a Samsung) the photo thumbnails would not show up like they used to. I looked this up and it was common. I suggested fix was to look for phone updates on Kies.
Then about 4 days ago I decided to install Samsung Kies onto my computer and update the phone. It said there were updates to install and I clicked go.
I went through the process and it all looked good until when the update process said it had finished. Then the phone just started to flash the Samsung symbol on and off, spaced every two seconds. Bugger!
So I tried a recovery mode on kies, that did not work. I tried booting into recovery (all three keys, volume up) and it does nothing at all. Samsung just keeps flashing on and off. I have tried everything!
However- it will boot into download mode so I have tried reloading the correct Samsung firmware back on with Odin three, several times! Everytime when it re-boots it just flashes. Cant get into recovery.
This is now where I am at. I want to know how to get into recovery via my PC. Maybe through some program. But I don't know how. I'll happily load on a new ROM but not sure which and most seem to need me to be able to change some settings within the phone first...which I cant obviously do. I have looked into Omegadroid and Lineage which both appeal. But there seems to be no way I can load them on from where I am at with this phone.
I am hoping that there some sort of program I can use to 'hard re-set' or wipe the phone completely start again?
Any help and suggestions very welcome. I am not at all adept at programming so keep it all in laymans terms (I have already learned so much in the last few days that my brain might well explode!)
Thank you in advance,
Alex

Hi Alex, Welcome to XDA-Developers!
It sounds like your Note needs a full wipe indeed. But first, I wouldn't have used AliExpress if I were you! These Chinese shops cannot be trusted when it comes to spare parts.

It's very possible that the mother was a second hand one. So, so it might have been rooted by the last owner.

Actually, this is what Odin software really does. If it fails, I'm afraid you'll have to take it to a repair shop again. Or maybe you can try another firmware. If you can remember the build number that was in "About" section before you flash it with Odin, then we could figure out what you were using in the first place. Perhaps by installing the firmware of that build number, you'll get it to boot.
And oh! The correct recovery mode combination is "HOME + Volume Up + Power Button". You mentioned "All three buttons + Volume Up" (4 buttons ?!), I assume then that you meant "HOME + Volume Down + Power + Volume UP"
Hey thanks for the reply- sorry for the late reply back..
When I plugged it into Kies I had no intention to do anything other than a usual Samsung update so I didnt look up the build number or any other info beforehand.
Well..that is one leasson learned!
Yeah- it was a typo when I said what keys I pressed. In order to try and get into the recovery mode I did indeed press 'home, power and volume up'. But nothing ever happens... the Samsung symbol just keeps on flashing away...mocking me
Is there any other program out there that I could try? I downloaded a program called Z3X Samsung tool. Used for flashing I believe? It installed fine but when activated, with the phone connected in download mode all I got was a prompt saying 'Cant find chip'

Hi,
I don't think there is any other tool you can use besides ODIN. The Z3X Software appears to require a flashing hardware (the box). In order to be able to flash your device using this tool, you'll need that box first. So, your best shot right now is to take the phone to a repair center. They often have device flashing hardwares (like the Z3X box) which provide convenient results but ultimately costs few bucks (compared to ODIN which is free if it works for you).
One last explanation to what your device is experiencing is that the motherboard is somewhat not working again. I really don't like this one either, but you can't ignore it. If you had bought it from a local shop or repair center, perhaps they could have assisted you in the current situation or maybe they could have even replaced it with another one.
I hope you'll find a way to revive your Note 2. There isn't much I can suggest anymore right now, as I have moved away from Samsung since 2014 (I owned the Note 2 aswell! Great device at that time).

Yeah thanks. I'll try the repair centre in the city next time I visit the big smoke. The phone certainly worked well for me but if its indeed dead, again, all is not lost because things have moved on and its bloody amazing what phones one can get now for half what I paid when I bought the Note 2.
If I get it fixed I'll certainly post up a reply with details just to help add to the info on this thread that might help other Note 2/Samsung owners in a similar way.

Exactly!
That's the whole spirit of XDA.
Thank you for understanding and good luck. :fingers-crossed:
Ok people of XDA. Here's and update. So I had no luck getting my Note 2 working again. I then bought a brand new Note 4 to see me through and that turned out to be a load of grief too....(Note 4 not liking the Marshmallow update and constantly freezing or rebooting, often every few minutes) oh my. When will the hurting stop?.... but that's another story kids
Anyway- while the Note 4 was out of action I decided I'd better sort the Note 2 out. I ordered another mother board from Aliexpress but before ordering I went through the available board listings, sent the same question off to each seller asking about any potential issues similar to what I have experienced with my current board and waited for replies. The seller that answered with the best reply that gave me some confidence got the sale. Another $35 NZD and this time it actually arrived after about 8 days from ordering.
I fitted the new board and as soon as the phone turned on, changed the language to English and promptly turned auto updates off- just in case.
Its been running perfectly ever since with no problems at all. After the fiasco I have now been having with my Note 4 (which has now been replaced thank fark) using the old Note 2 feels somewhat like jumping from a modern car with all the bells and whistles but too much to go wrong, into a nice old classic that is simplicity itself.
So now I'm off to look for answers on why the hell my Note 4 constantly wants me to download another update just after I have installed the last one.............
Alex
