Yes but I can not do this on 200 contacts everytime I change my rom... When I do this its ok, but when I resync with Google account the pictures get small again! This is a real blunder from Sony! Android 4.3 fixed this for HTC, Samsung and LG... To bad to by a new top modell from Sony and this is still a problem
You think the pictures will stick if I not sync contacts with Google, but use the Backup/Restore feature on the phone instead?
The images in Google contacts are too small
I use backup but I haven't restored

They are not to small on LG, HTC and Samsung... So I think something is wrong when you sync to Sony. S5 has same picture size on contacts and I get big pictures when I sync to that device from Google

X10 2.1 the contact photo is very blur when call out or call in.
X10 1.6 it 's no problem about contact photo ,it's very clear.
Has one any inquired with SE to see if there is a certain resolution the pictures need to be? or even dimensions might make a difference.
have the same problem... its really blurry
the same problem here

This problem is caused when the contact pictures are synced with gmail. They upload in low quality. So when you download them they are going to be low quality

contact pictures aren't synced, and when you just browse the contact people, picture is very clear, but when you call in or call out ,picture is very blur.
I have the same problem like ppp1974. It's very annoying, but I don't find any solution yet. Shame on SE
I have the same problem, taking a new contact picture and when I call picture is still blure
Sorry I'm new here, lurking for UK 2.1 update news, so haven't seen it myself, but... I believe the pixellated contact photos is an android enforced 96 x 96 pixel limitation. Certainly when syncing with google contacts, there are hoardes of people saying the limit should be lifted or a push from phone to google account, rather than google able to push the 96 pixel limitted one. Several threads / requests on google code website. It is dissapointing if SE have changed this, as indicated by posters here, it seems to work well on 1.6...

contact photos work well on X10 1.6
Anyone solve this?
It seems that 2.1 is trying to stretch the contact pictures from the native resolution (from the contact list) which is making them blurry.
if so then sux, anyone tried sync them with timescape and then use facebook sync??
dunno it that can help us
Problem solved..
I found that when joining contacts from phone with facebook contacts it makes a blurry photo.
BUT when joining contacts with facebook I had two choices:
- 1.st was Contacts name, facebook icon and my email address.
- 2.nd was Contacts name, facebook icon and just Facebook or Timescape.
The second option makes crisp contact photos.
It works for me. If anything unclear send me a PM.
(edit):
If you go to edit your contact and you see already two facebook accounts in there (one with email address and one just with Timescape under it) then just touch photo under Timescape facebook section and select Set as contact picture.
If you get the fullscreen caller id app and assign pictures from there it fixes it in the phonebook as well. Also i read that this is a general android issue and not only x10.

Bitte this is only a solution if you habe a facebook account.
Same here. Only the default pic from Timescape/default contact app works well, everything else is blurry in call screen (I am not using FB).
EDIT: It is a generally issue because Google only uses pics in I think 96x96. The solutions from other devices is to make another contact with the same name as you already have, but make it as a contact only in your phone (not google contact). After that when you edit this "double" contact, you can assign photo to the contact in the phone and after that phone uses this foto, not that one on the google. The problem is that this solution doenst work on X10 (at leasts not on mine), it makes pics look better, but still it is blurry.
EDIT2: Just for testing purposes, make whole new contact on the phone, assign any photo you want (I have tried photos from 4mpix camera as well as from 12mpix camera - doesnt matter) and still when in call in/out screen, its blurry and here I think the problem is on the X10 part.
it is not genral problem from google it's from se stupidity they were working in 1.6 and i have htc hero with 2.1 and every thing is ok so se should repair this huge mistake with some fix
This method is little strange, but it's working..
Install from market - "Full Screen Caller ID" app, then open and assign any new photos to contacts. Then you must uninstall Caller ID, and that's all.
I think that this application overrides default pics 96x96...
Is the blurry image display problem for incoming and outgoing calls fixed? I know the image doesn't look blurry if the contact has facebook account. But that image looks stretched hence looks ugly. Plus only few of my friends have FB account. Still I prefer to assign my own collection of photos to my contacts. In 1.6, the image displayed in great resolution.
I read about SE Sync solution but when I set up SE Sync account my Google contacts don't get sync'd from phone to SE website where I thought I can update the images. I have to create new contact on SE website and add image there. So, I basically end up with duplicate contacts grouped as SE Sync and Google Contacts which is a pain to maintain as I prefer to stick with Google Sync. But, even that solution has the same problem as with Facebook image problem which looks stretched from top to bottom.
I know about some apps that display high resolution images for calls but SE style is very cool. That feature worked so flawlessly in 1.6 and is such a basic and most visible feature. I guess SE developers and QA time completely missed as they probably used SE sync, Facebook, or never cared about using images for contacts.
the blurry images are an android problem, not SE
all devices are suffering from it:

How come pictures updated with Sony Ericsson Sync on http://www.sonyericsson.com/user or Facebook don't have problem except for the aspect ratio issue?
Presumably because it's not using the google sync app.

Even if you don't use Google Sync, if you just create a new contact on phone and assign a image to it, we see the same issue.
Anyone know which folder has the images that get displayed when we make a call? Maybe replacing those files with higher resolution photos will solve this issue.
use the timescape pic, it's fine. when you create a contact, it syncs to your google account. once it's sync'd, it will be blurry. if this was an SE issue, you would not see this issue on EVERY 2.1+ HDPI device.

I am amazed reading about use timescape pic. First, I am talking about contacts who don't have Facebook or Twitter accounts. They don't show up with Timescape pic for my firmware version and I believe it must be the same for all. Second, even if you use the Timescape pic the person in the picture looks thin and tall as the picture aspect ration is stretched at the top and bottom. AND I am talking about the display of picture while the we are on call with the contact AND NOT when you view Info screen of the contact.
Does some body knows how you can make goggle picture to become the default contact picture, even if sync of Facebook contacts is on?
I did it on the pc with gmail and the facebook pics dont take over.

Thanks mate sounds interesting as last result
But still would be better if some body knows the way to keep Goggle as default even if you have chosen the pictures via the phone gallery or via internet but on the phone (like I use application called Contact photo).
May be there is an application that you can choose which “source” will be the default one.
Any one?
Hi!
Same problem here.
Very annoying.
And once again we are going back, to the X10 era problems!
I tried to manually change my contacts pictures but then the Google sync made it's magic and turned them back to the ugly 96*96 pixels resolution!
Is Google going to do something with this??????
We live in 2012 damn!!
I noticed the GMail notification icon and a couple of others are low resolution as well, perhaps ICS will resolve this since high DPI screens weren't around as much when 2.3 came out.
This is a Google contacts problem not Gingerbread's!

At least with Arc you could edit your contacts one by one and unless you recovered them with Google sync (after reinstalling a ROM) they stayed in high res!
You also could do a backup (with Titanium let's say) and recover them intact!
I tried syncing my contact's photos with facebook and facebook in xperia but it didn't work... All the information show up but no photos -.- do you have a clue?
Sony did it again

Turn on your syncing with Facebook and in contacts/settings/filters.
So I just noticed some of the girls that I have as contacts that have changed their names because they are married and have both last names on Facebook, they don't match up with my contacts on my phone. That's fine because I had to match those up on my S3 too but I have to set the Facebook picture as the default and it's a very pixely picture compared to my S3. Everyone else having these problems?

I second Ubersync. Been using it since my S4 for linking profile pictures. My only concern right now is I can't seem to find the setting in Contacts on the G3 that would allow me to link/merge contacts with Ubersync info that doesn't automatically link to a contact's name.
I love uber sync as well, I wish I could get my Facebook calendar to sync to my phone. You guys have any tips there?

I've been using ubersync since it was called facebook contact sync and it has always worked perfectly to show contact images and updates to the images.
