[Q] Problem with CWM recovery and SlimBean - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Sup. I'm stuck installing SlimBean 4.4.2 build 5 on my Galaxy S2 i9100.
I changed the kernel to the one compatible with my phone, then I installed CWM from Google Play, BUT I didn't update the Recovery component because it would go to 100% and stop (without finalizing the installation).
So now the recovery is 5.5.0.4 and not 6.0.4.5 (I think that's the latest one) and the SlimBean zip won't install from the recovery screen. I get this error:
set_metadata_recursive: some changes failed
E:error in /emmc/Slim-i9100-4.4.2.build5-OFFICIAL-4068.zip
(Status 7)
Installation aborted.
The log also says:
Symlinks and permissions... ApplyParsedPerms: removexattr of /system/addon.d/50-slim.sh to 0 failed: Operation not supported on transport endpoint
So I figured I need to update the CWM Recovery component and it should be OK, but I disabled USB debugging before doing all the things listed above and now Odin can't see my phone (I wanted to install the .tar using that) and neither does my PC (I can see the safe removal icon in the tray and I can eject it, but I can't see it in My Computer as a device).
What can I do?

I came up with an idea: pull the micro SD card out of the phone and put it in a reader, then copy the new CWM Recovery .zip to it, re-insert the card and install the .zip in recovery mode.
Does that sound good?

Yes......
And kudos to you for searching / figuring it out.......most noobs simply post "help URGENT, status 7......what do I do" without trying to figure it out first......

Will that work? My dad has the same phone model, so I can try to put my SD card in it, connect the phone to a PC and copy the zip that way if his card reader (I don't have one) doesn't see the card (because it hasn't been formatted on a PC). Those are all guesses because I don't know much about all that stuff.

I don't think you need to worry about formatting.....the SD card will be 'prepared' when the phone is booted up after inserting the card.....

[Q] replacing a file in /system/ after phone won't boot

alright i have this problem and i am quite panicking now.
i will set everything straight , i hope someone reading the forums can help me asap !
- have a sgs2 unbranded (hk)
- has ICS 4.0.3 stock rom, rooted.
- i don't remember if usb debug mode was enabled
- i messed up in some way with the file /system/build.prop but there is a backup in /system/ called build.prop.bak
- phone doesn't boot anymore as it's stuck at the logo
- recovery and download modes work however
#need a way to delete the build.prop and replace the bloody file with the one backupped. I would like to avoid having to format the phone as i do not remember when was my last kies backup...
what i tried:
-adb shell: it doesn't work. for some stupid reasons the drivers won't be recognized (i have download android sdk and usb drivers), but when i plug the phone in recovery windows just says Device Unknown and even if i update drivers manually it would say that current ones are functioning so no need to update.
if i connect the phone to usb while it's stuck at boot logo, it would recognize the device through samsung drivers (except MTP of course, that would give error).
in both cases adb shell doesn't list any connected device: even if i kill-server and start-server it still doesn't list anything.
-tried using droid explorer in both frozenboot mode and recovery mode, doesn't see anything.
-tried using that other program called SuperOneClick or something like that, that has a "check drivers" button in advanced: if the phone is in recovery pressing the button doesn't do anyhing; if the phone is in frozenboot it asks to download and install some drivers but when i press yes a message appears with " no more data is available " !
i tried this procedure on both win7x64 and winXPx86: same results. reading around , someone says that adb shell will never work if usb debug is de-actived, like i said i cannot remember if that's the case.
-zip package: i created a package to try and overwrite the file with a custom working one i got. i put the package in the root of the micro sd , put the sd in the phone and booted in recovery.
but when i am in recovery the bloody CWM 5.0.2.7 says error to mount /sdcard, or E: could not mount /sdcard , same if i try to mount/unmount /sdcard. if i go to mount external usb card or whatever it says that a file or a lib (cant remember the exact message) was not found.
i have no more ideas of how to solve this, please be patient :<
edit: is there a way to soft format the system folder so that i don't have to properly wipe all my user data and it only affects the system without other contents?
If adb doesn't work hen you are in trouble, better download some non wipe rom and flash it over the existing rom so that your user data will still be there.

can you expand on this?
give any suggestion/example?
isn't there a soft temp rom for emergencies like this that you can just start, make modifies to fix and reboot (similar to the process to boot ubuntu on windows, fix issues and then restart normal windows? )
i would so like to make adb work.. but how.!!!
probebly will not work but try backing up of your ROM from CWM working or not..then just back up current one...
you can restore apps & data lateron from nandroid backup with some application like titanium backup donated version.
i made a backup . but since the external sd card isn't found by the recovery, now the backup is sitting on the internal memory.
the problem is that, if i flash something with odin now, won't odin wipe everything in the internal memory killing my backup as well?

nope....it will be there dont worry,
just check one more option, go to storage and mount, there is one option mount usb storage, after connecting your phone to PC just mout that and check, are you able to access the SDcard from the computor ot not, if yes, just copy paste your backup to the computor.
then flash a firmware from ODIN
Did the very same thing myself yesterday.. Most ICS-roms from Samsung is non-wipe, so you can just flash it over again with Odin.. Then you just need to root and make customizations (if any) again

could you be more specific on the process ? can you suggest me one to flash with odin ? i need to enter the OS , transfer my backup on my hard disk and then restore the whole thing.
currently my kernel is CF-Root-SGS2_XX_XEO_LPQ-PROPER-v5.4-CWM5.tar
and my firmware is GT-I9100_BRI_I9100ZSLPE_I9100OZSLPE_I9100ZSLPE.tar

you try to reflash once more CF-Root (.TAR)only from odin
then check "E: cant mout...error" is rectified or not.... also check booting or not,
still no hope...you flash the same firmware again and Cf-root, your SD card data will be there for sure as far as our expereicne till now..
first part of your comment: i tried reflashing the kernel; no changes. same errors
second part: shall i try using the same firmware from my previous post then?? not other roms? after that i will put the root and check if internal memory is still there. if it is i will copy it on my hd and restore.
if it is not there anymore..............
so the end of the story.
thanks to anyone who helped.
the resolution was much easier than everything else.
opened odin, pda loaded my same firmware which was the HK stock update to ICS and reflashed.
what it did was apparently and overhaul of the system folder, that's it.
any data was still there, as well as the backup that i did and all my apps etc etc etc.
however especially at first it looked a bit unstable, with processes failing randomly. now it seems it has stabilized a bit, but still when i try to run a Kies backup, the phone kies process dies and the backup gets stopped.
i still don't know how to fix this, but i'll be looking into it.
so, the morale out of this was at least for me: if there is some **** up within the system folder just reflash the same rom installed. i feel so stupid now for having made such a fuss when the solution was so easy and straightforward
NICE that you finaly came across and able to boot , now you make the Titanium back of your all apps and data transfer to PC....forget the system data.
and move to a nice stable ROM
"Unfortunately, wssyncmlnps has stopped"
anybody knows about this?

[Q] How do I install custom roms on my rooted Galaxy Player 5.0 USA?

Well, I am new to this forum because I recently bought a Galaxy Player. This is my first Android device and I have rooted it using SOC. just pretend you didn't do any of that and...
1. download odin3 v1.3 (windows application)
2. download the samsung usb drivers and install them, i can't remember where i got them
3. plug phone into usb, turn off while plugged in, turn back on while holding volume down (maybe it was up?)
4. go into odin and click the pda button and select...
5. this file and press "start" (i think that's what it's labeled)
6. the phone will reboot itself back to normal
7. copy this zip onto your sd.
8. turn the phone off, and turn back on while holding volume up
9. back that **** up, i dunno what the hell it's labeled
10. wipe data/cache/dalvik (dalik is under advanced)
11. choose to install zip from sd, choose the "this zip" from step 7
12. choose install from zip again -> ICS ROM you downloaded
13. reboot, try out ICS for 2 seconds
14. turn off, boot into recovery (the volume up + power **** we keep doing)
15. install from zip -> Google Apps zip
16. reboot and enjoy ICS and google apps and all the other cool stuff the internet has to offer
Thanks! Very well written, I'll try it out later tonight.
I have installed it successfully, however I don't think it detects my internal SD card. Do you know why that is?

This is why you should always read the entire post when you download a ROM. That issue is mentioned several times through the thread, and it has yet to have been resolved to the best of my knowledge. But always look into what your flashing, otherwise you'll probably end up with a really shiny paperweight on your hands.
Yes, I should've looked at the whole thread but I f'd it up badly now... So, I read what you said about the "SD card problem in the thread" and I took a look and saw that you had to switch around /emmc (I think?) and /sdcard around in the vold.fstab file in the /etc directory. SO, I was stupid and extracted the whole .zip of the ROM, changed the contents in the vold.fstab file, re-zipped it up, and tried to flash it again. Unfortunately, I tried to flash but this is what CWM Recovery said:
-- Installing: /emmc/ICS/3-31.zip
Finding update package...
Opening update package...
Installing update...
Installation aborted.
... It's probably because the signature verification failed (because of no signature). And I was also being so stupid as to deleting the original ROM off of my SD card... I also note that I am doing this all from an internal, I do not have an external... This is what I am going to:
Get an external microSD and microSD reader for the PC
Put the original ROM on it
Flash it from the external
I am guessing that it would work from that way, as I probably f's up the internal. Can someone clear this up? Will this method work?
Disregard my last post, I am all set back to the stock ROM with no problems. Anyways, thanks for the support, and I will always try to look at the whole thread before flashing a new ROM.

HELP!! Signature verification failed w/ non-official Cyanogenmod 10 ROM for Sanei N10

Hello everyone. Let's see if anybody can help me, because I'm pretty stuck with this.
Note: I've already searched high and low for solutions to the "Signature verification failed", but they either don't work or don't apply here.
I've tried to install the following ROM from xda-developers in a Sanei N10:
Unofficial CyanogenMod 10 for many AllWinner A10 tablets
I've installed it following the usual procedure:
- Press Vol+ and Power to get the Recovery menu
- Select Wipe data/factory reset
- Select Wipe cache
- Install the three ZIP files: "cm10_a10_20120913.zip", "gapps-jb-20120726-signed.zip" & "n10_compatibility_1.2.1.zip"
The problem is, even though the first ZIP with the ROM installs successfully, the second one (the one with Google's apps) refuses to install, showing instead the message "signature verification failed". The same happens with the third ZIP (N10 compatibility).
So the installation doesn't actually finish. If I reboot the tablet, it runs Cyanogenmod 10, but the touchscreen doesn't work (I have to plug a USB mouse to interact with the operating system).
So what do I do to avoid the dreaded "signature verification failed" message? Just in case if it's of any help to identify the problem, I'll mention that I can see the Android bot laying down with a red triangle with an exclamation when entering the Recovery menu.
I've tried to use the ROM Manager which is preinstalled with Cyanogenmod 10, but when choosing "Flash ClockworkMod Recovery" it says that "The SD Card needs to be mounted to use ROM Manager". Of course my MicroSD is properly mounted (I can see its files in the card from console, from the "Terminal Emulator"). I think this happens because the MicroSD is mounted in /storage/sdcard1 instead of in /storage/sdcard0, but I can't change that. I can't download APKs from the browser, either, because it also says something similar about not being able to access the SD (even though it's correctly mounted and can see it mounted from Settings > Storage).
I've also tried the CyanogenMod A10 ROM available in this page, which is more recent (October instead of September):
http://www.slatedroid.com/topic/3870...mod-10-tweaks/
But the same happens.
I've even tried installing the CWM Recovery ROM, but it doesn't let me installing that from the Recovery either (same message about the "signature"), and with Odin3 it doesn't work either because I don't know how to reach the "download mode", which is needed for Odin3. Pressing Vol+ and Power I get the Recovery, but not the Download mode. Does anyone know how do I get to the download mode in the Sanei N10?
Any idea about how to solve this? Right now I have a tablet with no touchscreen and not even Google applications (so I don't even have the Play Store), so it's practically worthless (at least the WiFi works). How can I get this tablet back to being usable?
Did you fix this? I want to get this tablet and most likely want to root and rom it but if this is the case...

No, unfortunately I still couldn't fix it
There's nobody here in xda-developers who can help me? Surely somebody must know enough to help me find a solution.
I've tried creating a symbolic link from /storage/sdcard1 to /storage/sdcard (it doesn't exist right now), but it just says "link failed Read-only file system" (I was root, by typing "su" and clicking "Allow" in the Superuser window). So, I can't create symbolic links even while being root user? I need this link so ROM Manager can detect my SD Card (it says it's not mounted but it really is, but in "/storage/sdcard1").
Also, the gapps package linked in the ROM page above seems not to be properly signed, even though it has that "-signed" suffix in its name. I always get that "signature verification failed" error message. But now I've tried downloading a more recent gapps package (gapps-jb-20121011-signed.zip) and that package finally worked! BUT, even though it apparently installed successfully, I still can't see any Play Store icon, nor any other Google app (Gmail, etc.). Why? Those icons should appear after installing gapps, shouldn't they? Maybe this newer "gapps" package is somehow incompatible with this tablet? (is this even possible?).
Also, even though I can now install the newer "gapps" package, I still can't install the "n10_compatibility_1.2.1.zip" file (I still get "signature verification failed" for that ZIP), which, I guess, contains the drivers needed for the N10 so the touchscreen works (currently it doesn't, and I have to use a USB mouse to use Android in this tablet). Any ideas? I'm getting tired of trying 9485738489754935627 things with no good result . I guess Android is showing here its Linux roots...
I think the key here is managing to install a new Recovery ROM that doesn't care about signing, but how do I do that? I can't install through ROM Manager because I get that error about the SDCard needing to be mounted to use it (and it's really mounted), and then I can't create the /storage/sdcard symbolic link because I get that "link failed Read-only file system" error. Also, I can't use Odin3 because I can't manage to put this tablet in Download Mode. Aaaargh! There's no good solution
Any ideas?
Bump!
I have same problem, i think that we need a different compatibility file, or perhaps if we could open install any app like Novo7 we could fix it... hope that anyone have the solution.

Thanks for replying. If we could find some way to install a new Recovery, then we'd probably by able to get the N10 Compatibility file working. This can't be that hard to do, but I've tried lots of things, and none of them worked...
Anyone?

Please let me know if you find a solution to this. Thanks!
I'm having the same issue with [ROM][CM10/10.1][21 Dec] Codename Lungo
Well, at last I could finally solve the problem thanks to chris5s from this forum.
These are the steps that worked for me:
1. Download the latest ClockWorkMod for Allwinner A10 tablets from here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1802268
2. Put all three files in the ZIP inside the root of a MicroSD card and insert it in the tablet
3. Check from the Terminal app inside the tablet to see if the MicroSD card is mounted in /sdcard (just type "ls /sdcard").
4. If the "ls" command doesn't show anything (that's what happened in my case), then you must modify the "install-recovery.sh" file and replace all instances of "/sdcard" with "/mnt/extsd".
5. With the proper "install-recovery.sh" file, run the commands specified in the above xda link (in my case the card is in "/mnt/extsd" instead of "/mnt/sdcard" as the original example shows):
su
cd /mnt/extsd
sh install-recovery.sh
sh reboot-recovery.sh
6. The tablet will then reboot to CWM recovery. Then follow the regular steps to install Cyanogenmod (wipe plus install ROM + GApps + Compatibility). This time the Recovery menu won't care about the files being unsigned and will install them right away!
I hope this helps somebody else!
hey i just registered because i have been having the same exact problem i read that you fixed it but how can i get in to the tablet if im not able to do any movements after it boots ???

Hello "lesanei"
I just noticed your posts. Let's see if I can help you...
The touchscreen doesn't work because the appropriate drivers were not installed (because of the "signature verification failed" issue). So you need to connect a USB mouse (and preferably a keyboard too) to the tablet. The Sanei N10 should come with a USB to micro-USB adapter. If you don't have it, you can buy it for cheap here.
Since there is only the one USB input in the tablet, you can't connect two USB devices at the same time. What I did use is a wireless mouse+keyboard combo which only needed one USB dongle for reception. If you don't have that, you can just connect a USB mouse and type with the on-screen-keyboard using the mouse. It's annoying, but it works
When I say "modify the install-recovery.sh file", I mean the file inside "cwm_recovery_6.0.1.2_a10.zip". You can modify it from your PC if you prefer. You don't have to do it in the tablet if you don't know how to use the "vi" editor (command line editor). Just open the "install-recovery.sh" file in Wordpad (do not use the Notepad, because it doesn't support Unix line endings so it shows the file incorrectly) and replace all instances of "/sdcard" with "/mnt/extsd". So the file contents should look like this:
#!/system/bin/sh
if busybox test ! -f /mnt/extsd/recovery.img; then
echo no /mnt/extsd/recovery.img
exit 1
fi
cat /mnt/extsd/recovery.img > /dev/block/nandg
sync; sync; sync
echo done
Click to collapse
Then place all three files ("recovery.img", "install-recovery.sh" and "reboot-recovery.sh") into your MicroSD card. Then safely extract it from your PC, insert it in the tablet and type this from the Terminal:
su
cd /mnt/extsd
sh install-recovery.sh
sh reboot-recovery.sh
Click to collapse
Then follow the regular steps to install Cyanogenmod and this time all files should install sucessfully, so when rebooting, touchscreen and everything else will work.
Let me know if it works for you.

[Q] SGPT111us/S stuck on boot... ?

I apologize in advance for posting this kind of thread for the 100th time (as I've read similar ones around). I still couldn't find one that may have a solution. I'm not an Android user, so this is all new to me. I got this Sony Tablet S stuck on a bootloop. I can't do anything but enter the hard reset/recovery screen I think it's called... ? I figured maybe re-installing its firmware from the SD Card would do, but I don't know which one it had before (it's a friends tablet that I'm attempting to fix). I think it may be one called Ice Cream Sandwich since I read it on some other thread. Where can I find it and how can I do this? Is there a go-to for-dummies kind of guide? haha. Sorry. I'm really lost when it comes to rom talk and whatnot, so be gentle, lol.
Thank you for reading. Don't mean to waste anyone's time.
Attached a picture, just in case.
Don't judge me for this being my first post. I probably created this account, left it laying around and never came back. I just tried it cause it's my usually my username and it was taken. Found out it really was mine. :/

It's the only thing on your FAQ that I tried, since it's the "brick" thing that I think is where I'm at.
Also, (don't know if this would help) tried using the ADB Driver Installer but the drivers are not installing either... I went to the device manager and tried to do it manually, didn't work either. [Q] how to get new ROM on S3 mini

Hello, right now i have fully clean and empty phone (no ROM, no files in phone, just CWM recovery) and i need to install Cyanogenmod (or any other ROM) on it somehow. I don´t know how to get the installation zip to my phone. If I do it through ext. SD card, it says "E: error can´t mount" if I do it through "adb sideload filename.zip" it says failed to write data 'protocol fault (no status)' on almost every other command like push or usb it says "error : closed". I am clueless now. I don´t care about how do I get it to work but I just don´t want to have a brick.
Any tips or ideas would be great. Please.
