It is advertised as having 2 GB. I was reading something about the HTC One a while ago where somebody theorized that 512 MB is put aside for video. Is this the case with the Max?

Some is auto used for system.

As far as i know for all devices using the Snapdragon 600, 512 MB of RAM is reserved / utilized for he GPU.

So... the task manager shows 800 mb of ram.. i thought our phones had 1 gig ram ?
Can someone please advise me if the missing 200 is used for sense or something?
That's allocated for the os, I believe.......its the same with the Atrix.

it's just like a computers motherboard with ON BOARD VIDEO a portion becomes dedicated for video
I just upgraded to EVO LTE and is very nice its fast quick beautiful screen very smooth but can't figure out what's is using my ram I'm using 400 and have mabe 270 left to used but when I combine those it doesnt equal 1gb of ram

htc sense use ram also i don't know how much but it's alot. Don't worry about the ram cause the system will end whatever you have open and not using to make more ram.

I think the gpu probably uses some too which might be why it didn't add up to 1024mb

Possibly, but when I add my used and unused ram together I only come up with
660 which is way short or 1gb ram

I think I remember the EVO 3d with more ram. Like 720 something.
Well, there are plenty of hidden system settings. The number that you see in Task Manager or Settings is how much RAM that can be used for anything. The ram you do not see available is being used by things that are UNABLE to be removed from RAM because they are essential to the system running. That is the reason why we see nothing close to 1GB.same thing goes for computers, you can either see Installed Memory or you can see Usable Memory. Installed Memory on LTevo would be 1GB and Usable Memory on Stock would be around 670MB(IIRC) for me.

I noticed this also, coming from the EVO 3d (also with 1gb of ram) vs the 4gLTE. IIRC the 3d shows 804mb total vs 680mb. I figured it had to do with the 3d running gingerbread/sense 3.5 vs the 4gLTE running ICS/sense 4.0. My friend who has a galaxy nexus also with 1gb of ram, shows around the same amount of ram in the task manager.. either way I am absolutely amazed with this phone, not one issue or hiccup so far..
Which one is better?
I think quad-core is a waste if there are no games or app optimized for it. I'd rather have 2gb ram so I can have more ram hogging app open and less automatic app closing.

There is exact same thread in general section people discussing about the issue you are asking hence this thread is not needed. Also quad in gs3 is clocked at 1.4, not 1.5.

I searched it, but didn't find it.
I'm a little iffy about upgrading .. now on G2, 1.2 with 1Gb ram. Is it worth spending the money for only .3 and 1 extra gig of ram?
I believe its the the epic 4g general section

If you asked the guy with the exploding quad core I bet he says the dual core with 2gb lol......... But seriously, I'd say you get more use from more ram, for at least the next 6 months anyways, till all the devs start updating their apps to optimize the 4 cores. But I'd still rather have more ram really.
Sent from my SPH-D710 using xda premium
I was asking myself the same question. Im going to go with the us variant, since there arent many apps (if any) optimized for 4 cores yet. I prefer the extra gig though because i run widgets like there no tomarrow
rather have the 2gb of ram...
ram is usually the bottleneck in computers
I like having a suped up dual core with TWO gigs of ram. And LTE , when it's available of course.

I'd say both quad core and 2GB of ram are overkill.

how about a quadcore with 2gb of ram?
Hi to all!
I have a doubt, in the stock rom, it apears to have 700 mb of ram
I have installed cm10 yesterday, and it shows the same, 700 mb
how much ram have we in the xperia S??? in the original box, it shows 1024 mb!!!
Part of the ram is used by the GPU (graphic card). This is why the system can use "just" around 700 mega bytes.
300mb used by system itself.
dont worry
But I think this is lot of wasted ram.
300 gpu + 400 os =700MB not available
Sony should indicate that this phone has 768MB not 1GB like MIUI did.
They shouldn't include the 300MB lost by the gpu.

They mention the chip capacity, not the available memory. It is perfectly normal. My laptop has 7.631 GB RAM because the Intel GPU and ramdisks and whatnot use up the rest.

Yeah I know that but from 8GB ram 7.631GB available it's like 90% available not 20% like in xps.
I know android is not like Windows in memory management but....

Just forget about your RAM. You'll have enough. That's all you need to know.

It is a comparison of two different devices. If you just take the Xperia S and slap an additional 1GB RAM chip on it, you will never notice the difference. It's Tegra vs Exynos and Sense vs TouchWiz way more than 1GB vs 2GB.

Hi folks,
just bought me a S3 yesterday and i realized there is just 779 MB ram. Where are the other 200 MB ?
What does Samsung say about that?
Is there a kernel or rom out there which allows to have more ram available?
Thanks
799mb available to the user (you) and the other 201mb is taken up by system processes.
Sent from my GT-I9300 using xda premium
Those megabytes are in system and graphics usage. But if you want to slightly increase your RAM, you'll have to try some other kernels than stock, or other roms...
Thanks for the answers, now I understand.
I was a little sceptical because on my sister's HTC One X there is almost a gigabyte available to the user.
Some ammount of the total 1G RAM is also "given" to the GPU, that's why you don't see 1024 MB as max. free.
It's there, just reserved to the GPU.

The 200MB is being used by Android OS (Ice-Cream Sandwich/Jelly Bean) itself
Every android phone has this. Even similar ones like HTC One-X.
I was bit disapointed to that fact aswell, because Galaxy S2 had more free ram than GS3. Why not just have 2GB ram on the device.
Well, till Galaxy S4 maybe then.

2gb ram will be nice. But wth, GS3 with 1gb ram still rock. Enjoy your phone.

you can free up some ram occasionally in task manager if you are worried about lag due to low free ram which shouldn't be the case. you can also reboot your phone once daily which is what I always do
