Pretty much what the title says.
I have Safestrap installed, but mostly use the stock non rooted image. I specifically set it up this way for Good compatibility, just like to keep the other image around for certain occasions.
Will it even work as is, or will it fail due to the modified bootloader?

Can't go back and forth with safestrap and kitkat...ss 3.72 ....which is out for att..will not do rom slots only stock slot install is allowed...There is downgrade method that allows NC5 to downgrade to mk2....but you would have to reload any rom in Stock slot.

My understanding of the reason that Safestrap 3.72 isn't released for our phone is that it doesn't support bootstrapping the slots.
If that's true, then you can't do what you want.
Also, if you upgrade, you'll get the Kit Kat kernel, which means that even if you get a slot to boot, you'll need to use bypasslkm to load the modules into that slot (otherwise, no wifi, etc.) But since you're not rooted, you can't run bypasslkm.
Bummer. I guess its time to pony up for a wife tether app, which is really all I need root for anymore. I love the ROM's, but it's gotten to the point where I can make most of the stock image run well for me and still be compliant for work. If I didnt need good, none of this would even be a consideration.
Will the update take and "fix" Safestrap, or will I have to manually uninstall it again?

You'll need to uninstall Safestrap and probably unroot before the OTA will work.

I used Safestrap on my Moto Bionic and would like to find a similar app that will make a complete recoverable backup of my device. I don't want anything that requires an unlocked bootloader due to the problems with OTAs. I don't use any custom ROMs, I just like to install MODs to the UI. My phone is already rooted VIA flashing the rooted image and OTA rootkeeper to update. I would like to try the MOD to add apps to the multi window drawer and fix autocomplete. It seems that it's not just as simple as replacing apks so I'd like a good backup/recovery solution in place before getting stuck in a bootloop. I could just reflash with odin but I'd rather backup the current state.
No there's nothing like safe strap. If you took the ota update then you have no choice but to use Adams unlock method to root which installs a recovery. Otherwise the only mod you listed is here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=34994272 for adding all apps 5o multi Window.
Why wouldn't you want team win recovery? If you're concerned with ota problems just freeze "SDM" after you gain root access. Then the phone won't automatically update.

there is no safestrap bull**** on a sammy device as mentioned above. root,unlock,recovery, then you can make all the back ups you wish. i would like somebody to give me a logical reason why they would want to take a OTA update? i flash all my updates via recovery provided by our gracious devs. PHUCK a OTA!!!
safestrap is not great and sucks. The only thing I liked about safestrap is that you can have 3 different ROMS to play with and boot up real fast. Use clockwork and you should be okay. Once you get clockwork or TWRP make your back up and you are set.
I had ME7 and rooted that, MODded some stuff, tweaked settings, disabled/froze bloatware... and everything was fine. Stable, fast enough.
Then I allowed (because I couldn't stand the constant Update Nag!!!) the MI1 update and DeLaVega Rooted that and things have been unstable since. Seemingly random apps are crashing and occasionally causing rebooting, sometimes it needs the battery pulled. The most critical app, and the one that leads to reboots the most, is Google Maps Nav - the one app I need most.
I am thinking I would like to revert to factory stock ME7, then re-root it, and maybe TWRP (and I have Titanium). There's nothing in MJ7 I need or want and I don't trust MI1 (it was out what... three weeks?)
I would do this myself but I can seem to find a ME7 Image that WIPES and unroots the phone.
It would probably help if someone would explain a bit more how the pieces work. I gather there's a bootloader, a kernal, the ROM and user data. Rooting deals with the boot cycle, the kernal is the main OS, the ROM contains OS layer above the kernal along with system apps and such. Obviously, those three have to get along. So my question is, if I used DeLaVega to root MI1, Can I just flash a non-wipe ME7 ROM? It seesm to me that the MI1 root tool would not get along with the ME7 ROM -- is that right?
BTW, I'm not a ROMmer. I get how ODIN works but I've never flashed anything (via Odin) to my phone(s) other than that MI1 root image (and WHY/WHAT is that 1.3gb?!? The ME7 exploit was a few KB)

as for as i know there is no method to downgrade once you have taken an update, not even with ODIN. once you take an OTA or update it you are stuck with it, you cannot go backwords

Now the only thing I can say is backup using TI and do a FDR (factory data reset).
This should clean up your issue. You will not lose root.
After that restore your apps one at a time and by all means make sure you *DO NOT* take the MJ7 update.
You think you are stuck now????

I did FDR twice. Turned off restore of Google stuff during setup wizard, turned of AutoUpdate in Store so I could control what apps loaded, too.
After first FDR it appears I still had root. I think that MAYBE something went funky because I was rooted on ME7, let MI1 come via OTA, then DeLaVega'ed that. I just don't know.
Now, I have a different phone, I am going to need to UNroot and FDR the phone I will send back. Haven't found info on UNroot for Mi1/DeLaVega yet. I've seen ROMs for ME7-nowipe and MJ7-wipe.

Kinda surprised you managed root without reading enough to see there is no custom recoveries available for MJ7... What root method did you use? If you used one of the chinese ones like vroot you may want to read a bit on installing the normal SuperSU installed as there are some who believe the one that is installed is a bit shady (it contacts an overseas server unnecessarily if nothing else)
Either way, only the first software MDK can install full custom recoveries... The bootloader is still unlocked but there is a work around that allows you to use custom recoveries still.
ME7 and MI1 have Hashcodes Safestrap for recovery as an option, which installs TWRP along side your stock recovery and hijacks the boot process to allow custom roms along side the stock system. No custom kernals are available not though so roms must be based on the the stock system kernal.
Hash is working on getting Safestrap working on MJ7, however he works on a few different devices so we are not his sole focus and I don't know how straight forward getting it working with the new security features is.
I am giving two VZW GS4's to my parents for Christmas and I would like to make things as simple as possible for them, which means getting rid of all the boatware that Verizon/Samsung includes. I'm familiar with rooting/flashing etc. with my Sprint GS4, but I am still somewhat bewildered by all the info regarding the VZW phones and all the different versions.
These VZW phones are on the NC5 baseband (?) and if I understand correctly they can be rooted with towelroot but cannot install a custom recovery because the bootloader is locked.
Once I root, will the phone still receive OTA updates and install properly, or will there just be a continual message saying that the update failed?
I don't plan on trying to install a custom ROM, but if I understand correctly the only way to do so is by using safestrap?
Is it possible to backup the phone, similar to a ROM backup in TWRP for example? Will I be able to return to a full stock state after root? In other words, after I root what happens if I do a factory data reset?

1. You are correct. The nc5 can only be rooted. The bootloader is not unlocked or even possible to workaround; safestrap is your only option.
2. Once you root, your phone will not be stock anymore so OTAs will not work. You must unroot and restore your phone back to stock in order to update via OTA. However, if you learn how to use ODIN, your life will become much easier.
3. Safestrap is the only way.
4. You can backup with Safestrap. Yes you will be able to return back to a full stock state using ODIN. If you use ODIN to factory reset, your phone becomes back to stock i.e. unrooted.

Thanks. One more question: Once rooted, if I stay on the stock rom, will the phone still receive OTA update notifications (even though it will fail install)?
I'm a little familiar with odin so I should be able to go back to full stock if necessary.

Yes, unfortunately, you will receive constant update messages. However, if you are rooted, you can stop these messages. Download an app called "titanium Backup" and freeze fwupdate.apk. That specific app is what causes all the update messages to appear.
I'm looking for some help/advice. I did search and didn't find anything on this although I would think it would have been covered before so my apologies if I missed it and it's already been answered.
I'm currently running Stang5Litre 5.0 OC1 V2 which I installed with Flashfire and I'm having a lot of issues with Good For Enterprise and it's root check. I can get it to work with Xposed as long as I stay on an old version of Good, but I've had two accidental upgrades that triggered a compliance failure and it's a long process with my work to get a new pin to get it going again. Using the detach from market in Titanium doesn't stick. I'm also interested in using Android Pay and can't get that to work at all. So I'm now considering getting rid of root. There isn't that much I do anymore that truly requires a rooted phone other than I really like being able to get rid of all the bloat and being able to freeze and unfreeze in Titanimum.
So my question is what options do I have? Can i fully unroot a debloated ROM or would I need to flash a stock unrooted OC1 ROM? Also, is the fact that my Samsung boot screen shows as unlocked an issue? I know that simply removing SuperSU isn't enough. I don't want to do anything that is going to prevent me from changing my mind down the road and going back to a rooted ROM which I know means not installing anything after OC1.
Any help would be appreciated.

After doing a little more research on Good, I think I have no choice but to flash a completely stock unrooted ROM. Apparently it checks too many things to simply remove Root. So what are my options for going back to stock and still keeping the ability to root down the road if I choose?
