Hi there,
I recently got a used Xperia U. It's on ics ICS 6.1.1.B.1.54 Kernel. I'm using CM11 on my HTC One S and I thought that using a custom ROM on the Xperia U would probably get some more speed out of it. Being on HTC, I'm used to doing this through a custom recovery (TWRP).
With all the different topics around, I soon felt a bit lost. I managed to unlock the bootloader using the Sony website and this tutorial. That worked fine. The next task in my mind was getting a custom recovery on the Xperia U. Following the information in this topic I thought that flashing a kernel with a custom recovery would be the thing to do. I looked in the U development thread and flash this kernel. This is the output of that proces:
Code:
~/XDA/XPERIA U$ sudo fastboot flash boot keiran-recovery-st25.elf
sending 'boot' (9239 KB)...
(bootloader) USB download speed was 19507kB/s
OKAY [ 0.502s]
writing 'boot'...
(bootloader) Flash of partition 'boot' requested
(bootloader) S1 partID 0x00000003, block 0x0000d000-0x00014fff
(bootloader) Erase operation complete, 0 bad blocks encountered
(bootloader) Flashing...
(bootloader) Flash operation complete
OKAY [ 0.814s]
finished. total time: 1.316
I felt the phone buzzing once, and that was it. It seems to be dead now. Connecting the phone with USB while holding down the volume + or - buttons doesn't seem to do anything (no blue or green led coming on).
I would appreciate any help on getting the phone unbricked and advice on how to get a CM11 rom on this phone, preferably through the use of TWRP.
An update.
I didn't notice this yet but in the top right corner of the Xperia U the notification led is burning red when I connect the phone via USB to a PC (under Windows. I had the phone connected and I wasn't really paying attention until I noticed that the led bar was on in green. It seems a lot like this problem, but I'm not sure what to do.
When the green bar comes on Flashtool seems to detect the phone as can be seen in the attached picture.

You have flashed a recovery image to your boot partition. Download a kernel, maybe this? Phantom Kernel and flash via fastboot > fastboot flash boot <kernelfile>

Ah! I see that now! I thought it was a kernel WITH recovery and that was just the Sony way of doing things.
I like your suggestion of flashing, the only problem is I cant get in flash or fastboot mode. My question would be if that is related to flashing the recovery in the wrong place or if it is a different problem, maybe battery related.

Yeah, you flashed the recovery to the partition where kernel should be, so your phone can't boot. Can it be detected with flashtool or adb?

So that is what is puzzling me. I flashed a recovery image at the boot partition :silly:, but now I can't get into neither fastboot mode (blue led) nor flash mode (green led) by connecting the phone with USB and holding volume up or down.
Did this happen by flashing an image in the wrong place? That sounds strange... Fact is I can't get into fastboot mode so flashing is kinda hard. Every now and then when the phone is connected to a PC the green led comes on and flashtool seems to detect the phone, but that is only for a short while.
About the kernel you suggested, how do I flash it? It comes as a zip. I'm used to flashing boot.img to the boot partition with fastboot or installing a zip through TWRP. This zip contains a .elf file and a META folder.

Fastboot supports flashing ELF and IMG files. But, I see, that you can't enter fastboot or flashmode. I'll find out another option...

Ah, I see... .elf is just another extension. I come from HTC and that is .img from what I know. If you could find another way, that would be great. I greatly appreciate your help. My thought was that, maybe, the battery is dead and it won't charge without proper software on the phone... I ordered a wall battery charger just in case.

No, that shouldn't be battery problem... But that's a software damage and wrong kernel will not ruin the battery charging process. If there's no other way, you will need to bring your phone to Sony service center...
EDIT: I think your device is powered on (but you don't know beacuse the screen is black but actually is a kernel loop or kernel panic). Try holding power button and volume up until it vibrates more than 3 times? (I forgot maybe 5, or just 4?) Then, try to enter fastboot mode or flash mode. See if it works...

I tried the key combination, holding them down for at least 60 seconds, with and without USB connected. Nothing happens. Could it be that the battery is drained by now and that that is preventing a succesful boot...?

Whoa. That indicates your phone is bricked (i think). It can be repaired. But, I've sold my Xperia so I can't simulate the damage like yours... BTW, have you installed the latest flashtool drivers?

Thanks for all the replies. Some of the members responding have been rather discouraging saying my NAND is probably fried (or something) by flashing that recovery to my boot partition. This might be the case, but I try to be on the positive side and try the suggestions of the members that are with me on that side...
That being said: I love the rubber band idea! However, I had already ordered a wall battery charger for less than 4 pounds, so I'll wait for that one to be deliverd to my house before I go MacGyver style.
I have to be honest with you guys on two things: I cross-posted my problem in another thread (some of you are already aware of that). I'll continue on the problem just in this thread. The other thing I want to point out is that it is my wife's phone that I messed up. I just bought it on eBay for her because her HTC Desire C was giving her headaches... I guess you see the pressure here. I was able to mess up her new phone in about two days time.
Right, like I said I'm optimistic. With the occasional green flashes of the led bar and the actual cause of the problem taken in regard, I still think we'll be able to revive this machine. I'll try the wallcharger in favour of the rubber band, unless you guys say that is a bad idea. Could you point me to the/a right stock ROM?
Thanks again for the help.
ps: after this problem is solved I do want to get to a KitKat ROM. The unlocked bootloader is one step in that direction, but I need to take the next step and I'm still a bit puzzled about that step. Is it flashing a custom recovery and the a zip or do I have to do it through Flashtool...? any help on that is appreciated as well.

Wrond forum, it should be in Q&A. If you can enter flash mode flash with flash tool (find fw around this forum). Try changing the kernel to stock with adb command (not that tool you are using) fastboot flash boot (name of the kernel). Charge it for an hour and see what happens. Post the flash tool log here.

Flash the boot.img from the CM9.1 zip file (fastboot flash boot boot.img). Then reboot into recovery by holding the power and vol+ buttons until the phone vibrates 3 times, then boot (power button) and press vol+ when the button lights come on.
Then follow the instructions given before by DavidMKD.

as far as i know, if the phone turn on any led, is still alive, try using flashtool and the original .tft, go for it in the P Development Section, download the 6.1.B.0.544 (Generic Version) and try to flash it, it might work, but you need to know this, if you flash it, you can void the warranty of the operator and if you unlocked the bootloader sony can't repair it (warranty void too) (i remember this was in the ToS of the bootloader unlock web)
Good luck.

do this, plug in the charger and let it charge (about 3 hours) and try to turn it on, if its a kernel problem, at least the phone try to boot up or turn on the backlight and get freezed, it's a OS/Kernel problem, but the question is, did you flash the correct kernel on it? remember the codename for xperia p is NYPON, inside the flashtool folders are the fastboot.exe, try to flashing a advanced kernel (the one made by DoomLoRD) and check for the phone, if it boot up until the xperia logo, everything is ok.

First, don't panic.
i made the same mistake when i flashed the first kernel, i think i messed up everything and... i recovered my phone xD
flash this kernel and hope the best, the instructions are in the post.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1716966
first of all dont worry just know that when u press all the three buttons at the same time it reboots and when u still keep them pressed it shuts off completely
i have an xperia p and had the same problem
what u have to do is rlly simple
first unzip the kernel (boot.img) from the fxp144_cm9.1 zip file
now copy this file into the folder in android sdk/tools or platform-tools (basically any folder with the fastboot.exe )
hope u have installed fastboot drivers
now switch off ur fone completely
and then connect ur fone in fastboot mode by pressing the vol up key and connecting the usb
(hope it goes into fastboot mode)
run this command in cmd in the folder containing the fastboot.exe
fastboot flash boot boot.img
this flashes the kernel
using falshtools u can either flash the zip file or u can do it through recovery if its alread in ur sd card
do it twice bcoz the firs time it flashes the kernel
if none works switch of ur fone completely, press the vol down button and connect the usb
this puts the phone in flash mode and u can flash ftf files of stock roms
all the best
P.S all this will work if u have an unlocked bootloader by the method giiven on sony's official site

i thing my phone is discharged. cant turn it on.

keep the phone charging, the led doen't matter as far as i know.

i think you should try to remove battery first. i used this method to recover my p. i opened the back cover and removed the battery for a few minutes and then did nothing but connected it in fastboot and flashed the correct kernel.
to remove back cover you have to remove two screws at the both sides and two under the bar over the camera. just remove the top plastic cover and you will be able to access the screws. then just remove the battery connector for a few minutes reconnect it and try flashing kernel again. i wish it also work for you bro. good luck. :good:
Hi! Can someone guide me into removing or getting access to the battery of this unit. I think the kernel is corrupted coz I think I flashed the wrong one. The battery drained out. So without a working kernel, I cant charge the phone. Even in USB to PC or directly to wall charger. I want to re-insert t the battery to see if that fixes the issue.
Can someone tell me if removing the battery then plugging in the usb without the battery if I can enter flash mode or flash boot to be able to flash the correct kernel or go back to stok room for the phone? Would that work?
Or I just need to reinsert the battery then try to enter flash mode?
SITUATION:
- cant enter flash mode or fast boot.
- can hard reset (Power + volume+)
- Cant turn on the phone
-just red led when plugged in then disapperas after a few minutes (not charging)
- the phone never got wet or never been dropped. (so im hoping this is a software issue)
- phone is rooted, unlocked BL with CWM.
-started when I flashed a flshable version of CWM touch version to upgrade from version 5 to 6.
Help please. Im thinking of opening the phone to access the battery.
The idea of removing non-removable battery is not the best one, unless you really know what are you doing - and i don't think you know it.
And i think this won't help you, really not.

What were you exactly doing? Rooted and BL unlocked Go? What and how were you flashing (which rom and kernel were you flashing)?

Hi, i am having the same problem. I flashed the kernel for another model out of noobness. So removing the battery did not help at all?
OMG right as i was typing this, the rubber band trick worked and i accessed fastboot and flashed another kernel. It wont start for now, but maybe the battery needs to be charged for a while (red led). In case you dont know (if you still have this problem), i will explain what i did (the computer just detected the device, so i think im in the clear):
1) get a rubber band and put it around vol up button (this is for fastboot; for flash it would be vol down)
2) plug the phone to your computer
3) get the fastboot.exe file (google)
4) put the correct boot.img file (or kernel, i flashed the wron boot.img, so i did it this way. I dont know what the difference is) in the same folder as fastboot.exe
4) open command prompt, go to the fastboot folder (look up commands)
5) type in "fastboot flash boot boot.img"
6) the cmd will say "waiting for device..."
leave it like that; i got purple (i guess blue plus red) led after awhile and fastboot flashed the kernel.
I will keep you informed on success or failure.
EDIT
It worked, i have a running phone.
Hey! Thanks for the post and reply, would have done that. However, i sent my phone to a repair center, and they havent got bakc at me until now, its been 3 weeks.
Was your phone unable to go fastboot and flashmode too before? And when you charge it red led appears then goes away after a few minutes? My PC cant recognize the phone, the only indicator i had was the red led when plugged in which goes away after a couple of minutes.
How long did it take for the phone to enter fastboot? Coz, I've tried holding the button (Vol+) for almost 5 minutes and nothing happens.
Can you provide me the exact situation you had? and the clear cut steps you took to fix it? Especially how many minutes for it to go to fastboot with the rubber band on?
TIA!
@ madismet
your rubber band technique actually worked!! thanks a lot!
I was just about to give up on my xperia go, when I came across your post...
thanks!! :good:

Hey guys,
I've got the xperia z tablet (16gb wifi only)
and I had unlocked it, the other day I saw it finally got an OTA update, so I let it update.
apparently that was a bad idea?, I was stuck with the broken android symbol every time i attempted to start the tablet..
I tried the sony software, the recovery thing it has. That has only made things worse, now the tablet refuses to start whatsoever.
Can anyone point me in the right direction? I'd appreciate it very much.

apparently that was a bad idea?, I was stuck with the broken android symbol every time i attempted to start the tablet..
I tried the sony software, the recovery thing it has. That has only made things worse, now the tablet refuses to start whatsoever.
Can anyone point me in the right direction? I'd appreciate it very much.

Yould could try and have a look at the following thread:

Hi
I had the same issues when I flashed the wrong ROM. Nothing worked no power light or anything.
Now I can't remember exactly what I did but I started to press buttons and I'm sure that holing the power button and the vol up for a while made it start again and it displayed an error and then went into flash mode .
As I said I'm not sure which buttons I pressed but I know that I held them in for a while
Try using Flashtool... Im pretty sure you can rcover it by flashing a FTF file.

So there is hope. :highfive:
I think I found the testpin. My sgp311 has started to blink after being dead since November, when I bricked it.
I don't have the device pack though.. Do you have any clue on how to find it? I think I just need the sgp311 SEMC package to resuscitate it now... Hopefully...

get the stock ftf file and flash it using flashtools, I was in a bootloop and it worked
i know its an old post but i have to try
i m in a boot loop and i want to find the Fed file in order to do a fastboot....
Can someone give them??
I test my tablet SGP321 with many ROMs.. I end up going to boot loop... Crashes and stuff but I always recover from it.
The things I do before doing anything insane with my tablet
1. Take backup off apps/data
2. Always enable debugging and Unknown Sources
3. Keep the backup of the ROMs
4. Always have the xperia flashtool on my computer
Here's what you can do..
Press and hold the Power button and the Volume Up button for ten seconds until you see a white light flashing three times. While doing this somewhere around in 5 seconds you'll see white led flashing once, but keep on pressing those buttons till it flashes next three times.
After that your tablet will be turned Off.
You can put your device in flash mode and flash a new ROM from Xperia flash tool.
If you get the error "Unknown sources and USB debugging must me enable for flash mode, then your option can be to flash the ROM from fastboot.
Download a ROM (CyanogenMod or any with custom recovery).
Flash the boot.img via fastboot and reboot your device.
Once done you should see a led lit up while the device is booting (pink/magenta color in case of CyanogenMod).
Press the volume up/down button and you should be able to go to recovery mode.
From here you can recover your device easily
And before you do anything make sure you've charged your device well.
Good luck
hi. my xperia u was unlock bootloader and root. when i entered a command in adb and want to flash a keiran-recovery-st25.elf the phone gone to off. and now it doesnt any pixel that shows to be alive !!!!! how i must to do? (( how to test is dead or not? sorry for my bad english
Try removing the battery -- then reinsert it and connect USB while holding down the volume button for fastboot or download
If you used fastboot correctly (fastboot flash boot whatever.elf) it can't have been the reason for causing a hard brick.

I'm experiencing the same problem with that kernel. I flashed it because I wanted to get CWM recovery on top of my stock rom. Now my phone seems to be an expensive coaster with the exception of one red led when connected with USB.
Any solutions are very welcome...

Does the red light become green after an hour charging ? ... if not , it looks like Sony service center is the only way

No green light at all. With some help in another topic I found out I flashed a recovery image in boot...
Would it be worth sending the phone to a service centre? I got it for 40 pound from eBay....

1- charging in emergency mode (without kernel and/or chargemon running) is extremely slow, assuming it can even turn green it will probably take a day to get to 90%
2- no. installing a kernel can't have caused this problem by itself (of course, something -potentially including the kernel- might have screwed up parts of NAND important to the bootloader)... if it's the TA or other individual data good luck without a full backup, generic parts can be pulled from another phone but you need either a JTAG card specific to the model or to solder ~6 wires under the sticker to even try, good luck finding someone willing to do that for less than what you paid for the phone...

Nope, it's still dead. Can't get into flash or fastboot mode so flashing a proper boot.img or kernel is just not working.

Hi can you try:
1. Disconnect the phone from PC.
2. Tale out battery and put it back.
3. Fire up flashtool on PC.
4.now hold vol - while connecting the phone to PC look what the flashtool log reads.
If its OK you can retry reflash the kernel and all.

Your battery is most probably completely depleted. Try rubber band trick:
1) prepare stock ftf to be flashed in flashtool: that means that you go through all steps when you flash stock ftf until it says that you plug your phone in flash mode;
2) Now, take a rubber band and wrap it around the phone over vol down button and be sure that rubber band is pressing that button. Improvise if you have to.
3) Now that you have prepared both pc and phone, connect it to the PC via usb cable and just wait.
I suggest you do this overnight. Just do as I told and go to sleep. Hopefully, in the morning you will have a working device.
Idea behind this trick is to flash stock rom the moment the phone has enough juice for that action. By connecting, your phone will recharge at a very slow rate, but when it has enough charge it will light up, and there's your chance. By applying rubber band, phone will boot into flashmode the instant the device wakes up Very rarely, it may not have enough juice to finish the flashing process, but at least you will have kernel level chargning, which is way faster than the state in which your device is currently in.
Report if you manage to recover your device
Hi guys,
I have mk16i(xperia pro), and installed latest lx cm11 build. Then, I tried dark's kernel. But I wanted to revert to the stock kernel.
Now at that point, i couldn't enter the fastboot or flash mode anymore. The OS running w/o any problem. But i'm stuck with the dark's kernel(which is very battery unfriendly,10 hour standby)
When i try to connect the phone to PC while pressing menu(or back button) the LED blinks for miliseconds and the phone continues switching on normally (enter OS).
I know it is my fault to install nonstock kernel but I really need help. If anyone experienced this issue, it will be great to hear the advice.
Thanks in advance
Try taking out the battery for a few seconds, reinserting it, pressing the button for fastboot mode (I don't know which one you have to use for the xperia pro) and then you connect it to your PC while keeping the button pressed. This should work

Thanks for the reply.
I tried it many times. But no chance... The LED blinks then the phone goes into OS.
I tried to reboot fastboot via adb commands. Again same result. Directly goes to OS.
Flashtool also stucks at "Device will soon enter fastboot mode" nothing happens. Phone stays on...
Is it hw fault? I will be very disappointed if so I replaced its digitizer recently by paying too much money.) It was expensive when i bought it also... I cant stand buying a new phone these times... pff too many issues...
Sounds weird. I have made the experience that it sometimes helps to take the battery out, then keep pressing multiply and long the power button. Wait ~10 minutes. Insert the battery and try again!
Hopefully it helps!
Otherwise could maybe be kernel related. Try to flash another one (with recovery).

i think you done it allready but better than have adead phone:
- re check if all drivers installed (android sdk with its google driveer, flashtool drivers)
put out battery , put in & hold volume down while plugging cabel in. (if led not stays blue, pull out abttery, put in & reconnect but hold other button like menu key) --> try all buttons
i cant imagine flashing darks kernel broke yr bootloader. theres sth wrong with your machine / setup / whatever.

Yea my fault... my main phone's a galaxy s3
If nothing works, you can still "emergency" flash a stock firmware with SEUS, or not?

if he unlocked his bootloader DONT USE SEUS! --> you get a brick...
use flashtool to flash stock ICS ftf .

Thanks for the answers. Yes unlocked bootloader.
Since the device doesn't boot into "flash" mode also, i am not able to flash ftf through flashtool or any firmware via SEUS.
I had managed to enter fastboot mode once!
Happened with USB3.0 port via "adb reboot-bootloader" command.
Still, I am not getting into fastboot again...
I will inform you, thanks guys.
EDIT: I did it once again thru adb in recovery and flashed a stock kernel. Let me see the battery drain is due to kernel or some hw damage.
I am sure hw is damaged...
Ultimately solved...
After i am able to enter fastboot mode via some funny method described above, i erased system partition and flashed kernel.sin of the official .587 ftf file of Sony Xperia Pro.
Now the device is able to enter flash mode and fastboot mode via normal ways...
Thanks guys...
EDIT: I dont understand how is it related to kernel? I thought that bootloader files are damaged which i cannot correct them.
There are many .sin files in the stock .ftf which i cannot flash any of them without flash mode.(i was able to enter fastboot mode only)

Guys please help. I am very confused now: When i connect the phone to charger(AC) when the phone is OFF, the phone tries to enter flash mode!?! Led blinks green then the phone continues to open and offline charging animation comes as usual.
Sometimes the phone connects the charger in flash mode! But doesnt connect to usb in flash mode or fastboot mode. I know it is a bit confusing but that is the situation.
Thanks...
