[GUIDE] Noob guide to access root on NC5 from NC5 OTA - Verizon Samsung Galaxy S 4

Complete Noob Guide To Access Root on Android 4.4.2 (NC5)Helpful Guide by Reconde
This guide will thoroughly explain how to obtain root on Android 4.4.2 (NC5)
There is ONLY ONE FILE needed for the entire process, download it here: http://www.androidfilehost.com/?fid=23501681358538076File provided by: @gigilie
Proceed after downloading and extracting the file above.
1. Navigate to /ODINv3.10 > Odin3 v3.10.0 and run it. In Odin, click on the AP slot and navigate to MK2_system_4downgrade_rooting_all_in_one and open it. Before going to the next step, you must put /safestrap flashable files-modules-quickupgrades-supersu onto your SD card, this is important. You will also need to download gogolies-wififix-VZW-retail-NC5-w-modules-SS.zip, and put it into the folder you just put onto your SD card.
2. Now, turn your Galaxy S4 completely off and boot it into Download Mode by turning it on and holding the volume up button at the same time. Once your phone is booted into Download Mode, plug it into your computer and press "Start" in Odin.
3. After the downgrade file has been flashed to your device, let it boot, set it up, and then go to Settings and enable Developer Options (this can be done by going to "About device" in settings, and clicking on "Build Number" several times until the phone says "Developer mode has been turned on"). Open developer options and enable USB debugging.
4. Back on your computer, navigate to the folder /apps-for-android-down-and-upgrades > /saferoot and run install.bat
5. After following instructions given by the command prompt, your phone should now be rooted. Now, transfer Safestrap-JFLTE-3.72-kk-B01 (found in /apps-for-android-down-and-upgrades) to your phone and install it. ***IF PLANNING ON INSTALLING A CUSTOM ROM IT MUST BE ON YOUR EXTERNAL SD CARD BEFORE THIS STEP. IF PLANNING ON KEEPING ROOTED STOCK ROM, VZW_NC5_PREROOTED-gogolie.zip(stock ROM- KNOX FREE) must be on SD card*** In safestrap, click install recovery, and when that is finished click Reboot to recovery.
6. In safestrap, go to Wipe > Advanced and wipe only dalvik and cache. After this, go to Install and install the custom, or stock, ROM of your choice (must be a 4.4.2 ROM) **IMPORTANT: ROM MUST BE INSTALLED ON STOCK SLOT** After installing the ROM you must flash jfltevzw-NC5-modules (found under /safestrap flashable files-modules-quickupgrades-supersu) and add to the queue gogolies-wififix-VZW-retail-NC5-w-modules-SS.zip AND UPDATE-SuperSU-v1.94. Now flash and wipe dalvik and cache again.
7. After installing your ROM correctly, reboot the phone into Download mode in safestrap by going to Reboot > Download. Now open Odin and insert NC5_4.42-ODIN_UPGRADE-FOR-4.3-NO-SYSTEM-NO-BOOTLOADERS-gogolie (found under /odin flashable files-modemhlos-bootimgs) into the AP slot and press start.
8. Reboot your phone into safestrap after Odin has finished. You must wipe dalvik and cache one last time and then flash jfltevzw-NC5-modules again and you are done! Your phone should now be rooted on NC5.
If you have any issues after completing the process, feel free to reply to this thread or send me a PM!
Special thanks to @gigilie for putting the files and other guide together. His thread can be found here.
Make sure to thank this post if this process worked!

Just what we needed for gigilie's method. He does some great stuff but he doesn't write very clearly lol.

Okay! First of all I would like to thank you for condensing this and making it bit more understandable. I'm usually really nervous about messing around with rooting (even though it's my second time), so simplified things like this really take the stress off.
the one question I had, is...
In step 7 you say to put "...open Odin and insert NC5_4.42-ODIN_UPGRADE-FOR-4.3-NO-SYSTEM-NO-BOOTLOADERS-gogolie."
Which slot in odin do I place it in? AP like before?

Yes, it took me about 12 tries to fully understand gigilie's method- his writing is confusing at times!

Wonderful! Thanks so much for the quick response and help with understanding all of this! I'll let you know how my root and custom ROM installation attempts go.
Update: I pulled it off and got my first custom ROM running as well! Might want to consider mentioning how to install the minor parts in step 6, after custom roms (like having to press the three dots and whatnot). that was the only place I had gotten tripped up. All in all, very effective tut. Thank you kindly.

Did you use this with installing hyperdrive? Since that ROM uses an aroma installer you have to click the three dots and click exit or it will automatically reboot. You don't have to do that with roms that don't use the aroma installer.

Oh! Yes I did. Sorry, I didn't know that hyperdrive installed differently than other roms. Good to know, though, and hopefully people who have similar problems can scroll down and find this, as it's probably not worth being in the OP, haha.

In @gigili orginal post, it says if you're on stock rooted 4.3 MK2 to start with step 3. I'm on stock, rooted 4.3 MK2 (I never take OTA update until I know I can root), so on your method do I start from the beginning, start from step 2, or from the middle of step 1 "Before going to the next step, you must put /safestrap flashable files-modules-quickupgrades-supersu onto your SD card, this is important. You will also need to download gogolies-wififix-VZW-retail-NC5-w-modules-SS.zip, and put it into the folder you just put onto your SD card."
Thanks for making it more clear.

where do I find /safestrap flashable files-modules-quickupgrades-supersu?
Edit: nm i figured it out I had a corrupt download and it did not have those files...redownloaded and now im good!

I've tried 3 times so far and each time I get to the end to reboot the final time, it tells me there's no OS.
*I want to keep it stock rooted.

From what I can tell the OP is wrong about this step. You don't have a 4.4.2 system on your phone. If you want stock rooted flash this: http://www.androidfilehost.com/?fid=23487008491962465

Yes, you will need to flash the stock ROM if not installing a custom ROM. I do not recommend using this file, though, go back to the first post and I have updated the link in step 5. At this point though you will need to run through the entire process again. I apologize for any inconvenience.

You will want to do the part in the middle of step 1, and then you can skip to step 3 and go from there.

I followed the original instructions to the end (which said to skip the rom flashing steps for stock ROM). I grabbed I545VRUFNC5-Stock-Root-Odex.zip and can't seem to get the flash to work. Is there a certain step I should go back to?

Does this procedure trip the Samsung Knox flag?

After step 7 got this error on reboot:
E:Error in /cache/recovery/sec_csc.zip (Status 7)
I'm not sure what I did wrong. Any help would be appreciated.

only problem with the above file josh is that KNOX is all over it still. yucky...
gogolie's NC5 Rooted/ KNOX FREE:
http://www.androidfilehost.com/?fid=23329332407590564 is my version with no KNOX was released a little earlier than that other ROM and I didnt publicly put it out there as much as I maybe should have. with all 4.4.2 ROM's you need to flash SuperSu 1.94.zip file after installing ROM or you will probably lose root or not have binaries installed... so be sure and always flash that file after installing a ROM in Safestrap!
also I gave Reconde the okay to start this thread, its endorsed by me and I thank him for giving props and not just copying my stuff Thanks buddy. Sorry about not being the best with words... figuring out how things work is more my specialty. Users feel free to ask any questions in the main thread I will answer or respond still as soon as I'm able you can also keep up with current development for the 4.4.2 as well as ROM's and testing ROM's there in that thread. Thanks guys!

try the files i listed just before this post. they will be your answer. and sometimes you will get that no os error depending on what ROM and system your using its totally normal for instance my mk2 AOSP roms say that everytime yet they boot absolutely fine its just an error from Safestrap sometimes not reading the system folder correctly but has no outcome on the booting of the ROM. Ignore that error as long as you think you properly installed it.

confused rooting my phone

I have the HTC Rezound with the recently released O.T.A. ICS from Verizon. My objective is to root the phone and kill all of the B.S. bloatware that Verizon feels they must add to the phone. I have posted before to ask how to do this and everyone says root the phone and kill the apk files or alternatively Root the phone and download Rom Toolbox then kill it from there. I have gone through and followed the "[GUIDE] Super-noob guide to unlocking, rooting, and flashing Ziggys kernel" to the 'T' up until its time to load the Kernel. I do not want to change the Kernel so my qquestion is:
If i have gone through the process of rooting my phone it should be rooted at this point. However when I run Root Check Basic it tells me "Sorry this device does not have proper root access." I do not understand why. In order to get full root access am i going to have to continue with installing the Kernel.
Is there anybody who could help me. I am missing.

1. Wrong section. Please post things like this in the general or q&a sections, not flaming, just telling you for future references.
2. If your device has an unlocked bootloader, flash amon ra recovery or twrp and go to the dev menu and it will say something like give Su permissions or root or whatever, just click that.
3. Profit.
4. You're welcome.
To root you should download the latest version of SuperSU zip file, and flash it with anon RA recovery.

This is a great community.
You do not need to root your phone to get rid of the bloatware, you can keep your phone stock unrooted and debloat it yourself and not have to worry about flashing anything. To disable go to menu>apps and after clicking an app you see the choice of disabling.
SuperSU not working
I don't know why i cant get this to work. I have flashed the amon recovery to my phone. Followed these steps:
1)Flash AmonRa Recovery.
2) Boot into AmonRa Recovery.
3) Scroll to and enter the Developer menu.
4) Scroll to install Su. DO NOT INSTALL THE ENG (Unguarded) one. Use the other one.
5) Confirm this, when it is finished, go ahead and reboot. You should be rooted.
Downloaded the SuperSU from google play and select install. after a few minutes it comes back and says the SU binert needs updated, I select continue. then after about a minute it says installation failed.
What am i missing? I have followed everything to e "t" I don't get it
More help please.

Also do i use the same method as above to flash it or is there an easier way.
THanks

Flash in recovery. If you have already flashed a custom recovery(amon ra) then pull your battery, hold out for 3 seconds, insert battery, hold vol down and power at same time til bootloader boots, select recovery, select flash zip menu, select sdcard(assuming you placed flashed zip on external sdcard), select file, press power to confirm, reboot when done. Now you should be rooted.

It says mobile signal or something like that. Did I do something wrong can any one assist me on this matter? I followed the steps on the form as well as several videos showing me how to do this. another question do i need to root first or unlock first? I've done this process over and over again but cannot get my cell phone to make calls or get data, There is like a hazard sign where the data shows.. please help me!

1. Flash revision3 via odin following the guide in its thread. (This will give you root)
2.Follow the bootloader unlock process in adam's guide from its thread (this will unlock your bootloader and unless hes changed it flash twrp a custom rocovery.)
Now you need to reboot into recovery and make a back up. To do this you need to go into recovery (twrp or clockwork mod). You can get to recovery by powering off the phone and holding volume-up+home+power. Now go to backup and restore back up. If you have an external sd I would recommend selecting the option to backup to it.
After that select a rom you want. If you want stock rooted you dont have to flash anything. Look in your app drawer if you see an app called supersu or super user you're rooted. If you want another rom follow these steps to flash it.
1. Read rom thread for known bugs so you know what youre getting into.
2. Download rom. DO NOT UNZIP.
3. Check md5 sum.
4. Move to external or internal sd where you can find it.
5. Boot into recovery.
6. Select install.

[Q] Custom Rom Problems?

Hello all
I have searched all over but have not found any similar problems.
I rooted my phone and installed CWM and would like to install a custom rom that exists for Gingerbread 2.3.6 (I flashed back to stock OS), I have found the rom that I seem to like a lot (Atomic rom) however when I put the .zip file into my external sd and use rom manager to install the rom it turns off, then the phone boots back up... Any ideas about what is happening? Maybe I do not have everything rom manager needs?
I am definitely not ready to flash the new rom using odin, unless you put the .zip file into PDA section and hit "Start" when the phone is in download mode... from the forums I read it is not as easy as installing the stock OS
Thanks in advance!

im sorry, I know you are new here, but you lead me to ask some very generic questions....................
are you in the right forum for the right phone? this is for the Note1
I only ask this because I cant even find any GB ROMS for this phone. the Note 1 has been updated to official JB. I would and I am sure you would hate to flash wrong files to wrong phone and wind up with a BRICK.
I am not trying to make it sound as if you don't even know what phone you have, but you would not be the first to flash wrong and kill your phone.
may I suggest you read up in the "Super Everything Thread", which is in the General Forum. you will find exactly that, EVERYTHING, there. Odin is no big deal and super easy to use. also most don't even use CWM or ROM MANAGER anymore. TWRP is now the RECOVERY of choice and much more user friendly.
there are also many YOUTUBE tutorals that can walk you through. but first, lets make sure you are in the right place.
your phone is a ???????? NOTE 1
you carrier is ?????? att, tmo, ver, sprint
it is presently running ??????? GB, ICS, JB
good luck and let us know if we help

Sorry about that... I have the Samsung Galaxy Note i717 for AT&T and I am running Gingerbread 2.3.6
I thought that if a rom could run on GB it could run on any phone that has GB but your response has lead me to know that it also depends on what phone I'm running, so thanks!
I'll go and double check to see if the rom I tried to install was for the note... I guess I'm lucky I didn't brick my phone when I tried flashing the other 2 rome xD... Gonna count my blessings tonight lol

don't need to apologize to me for anything. the more information the better. not only are there so many phones out there, there are variations of those phones that have gotten people in trouble.
you have the North American version
International version
Korean version
different internals and wont all take same ROM. just be careful my friend.

I am looking into this rom, looks pretty interesting. Flashing the "AT&T fix" though, do I put that on my SD card also?
Update: For some reason I can not install rome
I am not sure what I am doing wrong because I have Rom manager do everything when I put the .zip file on my SD card and the phone restarts like normal, I even tried doing it manually in cwm recovery. I have no idea what I am doing wrong. And this rom I know for sure is meant for GB and the i717.
Any suggestions? Thanks again
You mean it's a gb rom meant for the i717 galaxy note....... I think you may be a little mixed up on what a rom is and what your actually doing...... Explain in detail what exact steps your doing when your flashing the rom so someone can help you.

I appreciate your patience
Step 1: I put the downloaded .zip rom (saurom) into my external sd card in a special folder I named Roms
Step 2: I fire up Rom manager and go to "Install ROM from SD Card"
Step 3: Go to folder containing the Saurom .zip file and select it
Step 4: Make sure "Backup Existing Rom" and "Wipe Data and Cache" are selected
Step 5: Hit "Reboot And Install"
The phone will then turn off and restart like normal, I check but the rom did not install. I honestly have no idea how I'm screwing up lol

You have to understand this as well, the ROMS do not install in conjunction or within the current Stock ROM. They replace them. So as stated above you have to make sure you have CWM or TWRP installed and boot directly to the custom recovery. Then wipe your data/system/cache/dalvik and after all of that install the ROM of choice.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1525341
The very first thing listed in this topic is how to install Saurom. No where does it say to try and do it through ROM Manager.
Maybe that is where your hiccup is coming from?
No further instructions needed good luck and happy flashing

Alright so I forgot that I had to wipe the data/system / cache / dalvik
But even when I tried that just now and went into installing the .zip file it said that the installation failed, is it because cwm was removed when I wiped the device?

haha, only problem is that the rom hit an error anyways so I'm still lost at what I am doing wrong...
Another question, when I reset all of the settings and stuff before I flash the rom, wouldn't that get rid of titanium back up? then how would I restore my apps and data?
Yes you are right... But first stick your phone in the freezer for 2hrs...then microwave it for 3 mins... It will cause your recovery to reconstruct and see your internal storage enabling developer options to be on... Then hit the rom installer button.

[Q] Problem loading Safestrap

Hello,
I followed the below instructions from the attached link. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2441441
The problem I am having is after I use the “Install Recovery" button my phone goes through the install process and prompts me that I have installed Safestrap however the State of my phone says not installed. I assume that Safestrap is not installed did I do something wrong? Thanks
I also attached some screen shots as well. Phone specs: Verizon S4 Saferooted on Build VRUEMK2, Android 4.3
HOW DO I INSTALL SAFESTRAP?
1.Requirement: Root
2.Requirement: Allow APK install from Unknown Sources
3.Download the Safestrap APK
4.Find the APK using a Filemanager tool and open it on your device, then click "Install".
5.(If updating from an existing Safestrap you might be warned that this will over-write the existing installation. Click the "Yes" equivalent to this message.)
6.Once installed, open up the Safestrap application as you would any other app.
7.Agree to the disclaimer that you won't try to sue me and hunt me down with a rifle if you manage to break your phone..
8.Then use the "Install Recovery" button. You should see the current version down in the lower left corner of the window. And the "Status:" should say "Installed" when you're done.
9.From there you can reboot and you *should* see a new splash screen during the boot up. While this is showing you can enter Safestrap Recovery using the [ menu ] button.
10.That's it for the installation! Read below for a brief overview of Safestrap Recovery v3.x

Im gonna give ya the best info i can. Im new to the safestrap stuff so bare with me hopefully someone can tell me if i am wrong.
1st:
On the stafestrap page: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=45517751 make sure you are using the correct SS for your version. There is a MJ7/MK2 version and a ME7/MI1 build.
2nd
If you have ran and installed SS before you may need to uninstall it before you install the newer version. There is instructions on that in the link i provided also.
PS
Make sure if you get it working that you download the correct Kernel Modules for the baseband you are running. Very important.
Hope this helps, but like i said... I hope i can be backed up on this and if i am wrong that someone can tell me that lol

Im running out of ideas but Im gonna do whatever I can to help you get this going. I may be doing this tonight to my girlfriends phone and I want all to go smoothly .
This may be stuff you have tried so just ignore if you have already. Just gonna make a list.
1. Redownload the APK. Maybe its a bad download and reinstall it in your phone. Uninstall your current version and then reboot phone. Then install the newly downloaded one.
2. If you can, maybe find a little older version of SS and try it.
3. Do a complete wipe of everything on the phone and start clean after the factory reset (as long as you dont mind factory resetting your phone) and then try the SS install. (make sure you can install from unknown sources again)
4.Make sure you didnt deny the SS app superuser permissions by accident
5.Buy me a beer and maybe i can come up with something else?. Just kidding ofcourse :silly:
Ill do what i can to find a solution for ya

Root should not be lost. If it does then you can reroot. Yeah all your app / contacts / settings will be deleted. You can using Titanium Backup to back up all your apps. Gmail can back up all your contacts. Settings, unfortunately you will have to redo all these. Also, what are you using to download the SS APK?

Well this process shouldn't be this hard. What I would do at this point is Odin the MK2 no wipe.. so you keep all your data then use Saferoot again to root the phone. Then re download SafeStrap and try again.
Another thing are you opening up SuperSu so it can update your binary after rooting and before installing SafeStrap?

Never thought of that.
Never really figured basically unrooting and rerooting the phone would help, but hey, anything that will work.
Thanks for the feedback!

I mean I actually don't think you'd even have to Odin back either but at this point might as well just start over fresh.
Then root the phone again and make sure to update the SuperSu binary then reboot and try installing SafeStrap again. Seems like a superuser deal to me. I could be wrong... Just something I'd do to troubleshoot something like this

I am a little hesitant to re-root as I had a problem rooting the first time but I got through it. And I am not familiar with the Odin process but I see it all over the forum. Eventually I know that I need to venture out and learn this if I am going to experiment with the S4 and other roms. At this point in time I don’t plan on changing ROMs do I really need Safestrap? All I am trying to do is this 4.3 Tether Unlock MOD? http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2512981
As for the SuperSu updating the binary it did prompt me and I allowed it and I am pretty sure it was before trying to install SafeStrap. Thanks

[Q] Google Edition/Recovery Installation Issues

First off, thanks so much to anyone who helps me out here, Ive been trying to install the ROM below on my phone for many, MANY hours.
[ROM]KOT49H【4.4.3】AOSP Official Google Edition 【Verizon!】06-13-2014
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2643031
I have:
SCH-I545
4.4.2
VRUFNC5
I managed to get it rooted but I can't for the life of me figure out how to get the phone into a non stock recovery. every time I try, it goes into the stock recovery, even if I choose reboot recovery from rom manager. I tried flashing the rom from the stock recovery but that did not work. If someone could please point me in the right direction for a recovery program (loki) that will work with my phone I would really appreciate it.
Im hoping the problem isn't with the root but I havn't had any other issues. I downloaded:
UPDATE-SuperSU-v1.99r4
Im sorry if this is noob stuff but I used to do it all the time with my old DX and now I can barely get it rooted! (took hours) proper recovery is the next step toward a GPE ROM I hope. Thanks, a bunch, nap time

First off - did you read any of the stickies about our phone? Unless you are on the MDK bootloader, you cannot install a custom recovery nor can you install this rom. You must use Safestrap to load any custom TW rom - no AOSP or CM based roms at this time.

It is possible to install this rom, you just have to use Safestrap.
This is how to install:
Note: SafeStrap doesn't work with encryption turned on (disabled by default). If you don't know if you don't have encryption on/your phone isn't a business phone (in which case you shouldn't be doing this!!!) then you most likely don't have encryption on!!
6. Use this app to change your SELinux mode to "Permissive" https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.mrbimc.selinux, this is required to use SafeStrap
7. Install SafeStrap 3.72 APK from this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/show....php?t=2448925, NOT 3.71 FROM THE VERIZON THREAD!!! Then click install in the SafeStrap App
8. Install https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=eu.chainfire.supersu and update your binaries
Then to enter safestrap while rebooting hit menu key, from there you can flash your rom.

This does not work with safestrap its said over and over in the thread that it will not work. I tried it anyway per what you said and it wont get past the boot animation. You have to have an mdk bootloader and be able to install custom recovery for this to actually work.

If I downgrade to MDK firmware (I believe you can with surges method??), then I will be able to do this, correct? (without dealing with safestrap) by "this" I mean of course, finding a different recovery and flashing the GPE ROM.
If you read the top you would know that I spent MANY hours, reading MANY different threads and sites, that is why I am in the help section now. I'm not exaggerating when I say I spent from 11PM last night until 6:30 this morning with only a few breaks. I've flashed and re-flashed a million different files trying to get the results I wanted (bricked several times) and nothing worked, so this is my last resort

If you read the top you would know that I spent MANY hours, reading MANY different threads and sites, that is why I am in the help section now. I'm not exaggerating when I say I spent from 11PM last night until 6:30 this morning with only a few breaks. I've flashed and re-flashed a million different files trying to get the results I wanted and nothing worked, so this is my last resort

I see. So unless someone has a GPE ROM that works with safestrap, I am out of luck until a downgrade method, or some other alternate recovery mthod is found? I appreciate your time and help!

Understood. The learning curve has been very steep, as the last time I did this stuff there was only one version of each phone, sbf's were still around (don't know if they are or not anymore but it's not what I have to use to unbrick now) etc. Thanks so much for the replies and ill keep my eyes open for solutions as they are developed. I WILL have google play edition on my phone someday, and I thank all the dev's ahead of time for their hard work!
