Hello everyone,
I've looked through the forums and I haven't found a good way to unbrick my Verizon Galaxy S4. What happened I think was that I already had safestrap recovery installed and I tried to install a different recovery without first uninstalling safestrap. Anyway, the phone won't boot up normally now. It goes into download mode first. And now, it says "firmware upgrade encountered an issue. Please select recovery mode in Kies & try again." Kies doesn't even recognize the phone so that is not an option.
I have tried to flash a stock image with Odin, but every single time I get a "fail". I've tried multiple version of Odin, including 3.09 but I haven't had success yet.
Could anyone help me get my phone working again?
Thanks.

I'm not sure of the build, but I tried both files in this link:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2578209
I've tried others but I believe the ones above should work? I still get a "fail" every time I try to flash them. I've had this error before but I cannot remember how I got it to work.

Any chance you can post the screen of the Odin fail error or tell us where it's failing?
Side from that idk... Odin is seeing your phone so not the drivers. I'd say try the MK2 file and you could also try putting the PIT file from that thread in Odin along with the tar just to try it in the mean time.

Also... You think you had SS on your phone? But not sure?, there's a chance your phone is on NC5 Kit Kat and that's why MK2 won't work but really we need more details before going that route.

Alright guys as my title states I pulled a "noob move" and it looks like I've soft bricked my phone (It won't boot past the verizon splash screen). I've done a little research and I'm pretty familiar with Odin and how it works. Seems to be the same concept as jungle flasher and I've modded a few 360's in my time. I've tried, to no avail, to flash my phone back with the stock image numerous times and I figured it was time to consult the experts. What I've done so far: Downloaded the factory stock restore TAR from Rwilco12's site and put that in the PDA file browser of Odin. My phone shows up in Odin when connected in download mode with a light blue com:4 box. I read sometimes this is supposed to be yellow? Other versions of Odin it is yellow. This instance was attempted in 3.07. 1.85 it shows up as yellow. Regardless of either version, they both fail after the "aboot" step. I've tried two computers and have failed miserably all morning. Any help or advice would be much appreciated.

VRUAME7 is the most recent with the latest OTA update correct? If so that's the one I was on. Now I did root it successfully initially, it got stuck this way after installing SuperSU... I guess I should have said that initially. My apologies.

ME7 is the current OTA, yes. Are you using the correct .TAR file from here? http://www.androidfilehost.com/?fid=23032113221600748? Also did you try doing a data wipe/factory reset in stock android recovery?

The link you sent was broken, I'm using the rwilco12 factory image. It wont let me post a link because I don't have enough posts.
I have tried doing the data wipe/factory reset but it kept saying error. and now it says Firmware upgrade encountered an issue please select recovery mode in kies and try again. That's when going to the volume up "recovery" mode. Volume down, "download" mode still works fine.

sorry, here is the link to the Odin files thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2301259 Download the VRAUME7 factory image. I'm not sure but I think you may have the MDK image from RWILCO and there's no going back to that once you've updated to ME7.

Alright I'm downloading that version now. Its capping my connection so it should be done in 25 mins and we'll try again! Thanks for your help so far bladerunner. Seems like we're getting somewhere...

Ok, so I think I have really screwed up. I was updated to the latest update. I then tried to root using the terminal emulator process and wasn't sure if I succeeded. So I tried to unroot by trying to use Odin to put an earlier stock rom on my Verizon GS4. I got a fail error in Odin and a yellow triangle with an exclamation point in it and an error on the phone that says "Firmware upgrade encountered an issue. Please select recovery mode in Kies & try again. I tried connecting through Kies, but the phone would not connect. I have tried (with what I think are earlier stock ROMs) to fix it through Odin. I keep getting the same error on my phone and can't get past it. The only other thing I can do on my phone is get into download mode. Any suggestions? Thanks

I have the same problem. Basically whats wrong is the new update that both you and I did on the S4 locked the bootloader. What his means basically is it cannot be downgraded to earlier stock firmwares. So what we need to use in Odin is the stock file for the Build VRUAME7 Android 4.2.2 not the older one thats Build VRUAMDK. Now I have not been able to find this Stock file anywhere. If you'd like to join the search it would be awesome. Haha
The me7 odin image is in the dev section.

Hey guys,
I thought I would come here because I have tried all other options besides going to Bestbuy. My Samsung Galaxy S4 model SCH-I545 is currently without an operating system for it seems in the Odin process to flash it back to stock it failed and now I am in quite the bind. I cannot access the stock recovery mode or boot normally. Whenever I boot my phone I get the message "Firmware upgrade encountered an issue. Please select recovery mode in Kies & try again". I'm kinda stuck at this point help would be much appreciated
I can still access Odin mode and the computer still recognizes my phone so that is a plus
Thanks,

Dog,
What did you do to fix it, specifically?
All, I am having an issue very similar to this, I'm on MJ7 and have the developers unlocked phone. Even thought the bootloader is unlocked the root functionality is not enabled. In trying to achieve root through flashing a file (it failed because of signiture validation error it went into a boot mode where it sounds like it is booting normally but there is no visual indicators and the LED light is a pulsing blue color (don't know what that means). Does anyone know where i can find an original factory firmware file and instructions to flash it successfully? I noticed there are several people in these forums who say they have had luck with a couple of the restore methods yet none have succeeded for me. If this is a developers edition why is the bootloader unlocked but not rooted? Thanks for any help you might be.

I used the one from Kies
still not working
****s ****ed.
I have a gs4 was on me7 running hyperdrive 9.1. Hyperdrive had been bugging me to update for months, so I finally did. I had installed 9.1 on my stock rom slot so I wiped and tried to update to rls 15 of hyperdrive. I got a black screen with a pulsing blue led. so I wiped and tried to go to rls 14 same thing. I wiped and created a new rom slot installed rls 15 and got stuck in boot loop. Rls 14 did the same thing here. Then I tried to restore my stock rooted back up and just call it a day, but it didn't work everytime I tried it said failed. So then I went to Odin and tried to flash the stock firmware, being very cautious to pick the verizon one every time. I would say I have downloaded three separate firmware files with no luck even tried a one click stock restore with no luck. Please if you have any thoughts. I just need my phone to work.

Thanks for the reply but I have already solved the problem.
It wasn't that I couldn't follow directions. My **** was soft bricked.
After hours (26 to be exact) of scouring the forums, I finally found a combo that worked.
For any one else having this problem I posted steps to fix it here
Ive looked all over and tryed a couple different things to fix this. I tryed doing a clockworkmod recovery and it did not work. Then i tryed to use loki and it bricked the phone. Now it says "Firmware upgrade encountered an issue. Please select recovery mode in Kies & try agian". I have tryed using odin to go back to the stock rom/firmware and it fails half way through on two different pc's. then i tryed kies and it wont read my device on either pc. i have reinstalled samsung drivers on both pc's and still nothing. If anybody has any ideas it would be appreciated. I have a good knowledge of PC's but this is the first time messing with a phone.

Build number ME7 I rooted with This Guide. I did the recovery with the ClockWorkMod app and that did not work so i then tryed GooManager for the loki recovery. The Odin Firmware was 6.0.4.4. Wow. You didn't do any research at all did you? You're going to have to find a ME7 (or later build) .tar file and use Odin to flash back to stock and start all over.
Just know you CAN'T install a custom recovery with ME7 (or any build after that) and you can't revert to an older build. Your ONLY option is Safestrap. Read that thread I linked you to and do your research.

Hi.
I have a Verizon Galaxy S4 upgraded to NC5 kitkat 4.4.2.
I was on Hyperdrive Rom 17.1 and I wanted to try out other roms so I installed the latest version of Chaos rom. I know how to install other roms because I've done so on other phones. So after I installed the rom all worked great. But after I rebooted my phone the phone wont go past the Samsung Galaxy S4 Splash. When ever I reboot it shows the splash then the screen goes black. I've spent hours trying to fix this. NOTE: I can go into Download Mode and Recovery Mode.
What should I do? Is there any method to fix this? Ive tried reinstalling normal stock via oden and the default recovery mode
Im stumped at this point. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

You will need to boot into recovery and wipe everything except internal SD and factory reset. Surge has a thread here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2578209 with all of the ODIN files you will need. I'm not sure what you mean by "tried to reinstall normal stock with ODIN". Do you mean the ODIN flash failed or that the flash worked but you are still unable to access your phone?

How do I do that? I just go into the recovery and choose the wipe data option? And I only have the standard android recovery. I dont have SS or TWRP or CWM installed atm
And yeah Odin Flash failed. But I didnt use the MK2 files though. I used the NC5 files. Im not sure if that could be the issue but I'll give it a try.

Yes, boot into normal recovery and wipe data/cache/dalvik/factory reset then try the ODIN flash. You can try the full wipe method to get back to NC5 right away but you may need to start at MK2.

It didnt work
I followed TheTechGuys method and I failed on both attempts .
What am I supposed to do?
I followed it and when it says it fails its completely normal then when I put in the other tar and uncheck the re partition box it still fails me.
What should I do?

The only thing that has ever worked for me when I see that screen is to try to install firmware through KIES it will fail but it seems like it puts some sort of driver on your phone that allows ODIN to work. That may make no sense but I have gotten that stupid yellow triangle twice and KIES and then following the instructions, to the letter,on TechGuys thread worked both times.

I tried using KIES but it says that my S/N is wrong when ever I put it in.
Im really lost right now. Everytime I try doing the ODIN methods it works for a couple seconds then fails.

If you are doing everything correctly on your end, I do not know why none of these methods are working for you. They have worked for me in the past. The only other thing I can point you to is this video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GL8XwuRYoWU&feature=youtu.be which is step by step instruction on how to use the method on Surges thread.

Did you try using a different USB cable? That may be the issue.
