[Q] Car charging while using maps - Xperia Z2 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I've tried to google this but can't seem to find it anywhere.
My HTC One m7 can't keep the battery charged while it's running google maps navigation in the car with charger plugged in.
I find this really annoying..
How does the Z2 handle in this situation ?
Bonus question: Can you set the lock screen to only require code after having been off for x minutes ? The M7 had this feature perfectly implemented but vanilla android only has the option to have the entire lockscreen disabled for x minutes..

It is charging, just your phone uses more than you charge. As map requires active GPS and mobile data service. Solution to solve this problem is
get high power charger....... (ready carefully your XZ2's manual how many volt/ampere does phone supports .... it can be damage your phone)
Bonus Question: I can't find that feature on my XZ2.... You can try other lock screen apps that supports the feature... Or some custom rom may
have that feature.

Well I have a 2amp charger in the car, and I find that the battery does decrease while using navigation.

Really? So you need at least an 3 amp charger in the car?

Only tested a couple of times, but yes battery definitely goes down. Not sure if I have another issue though as sometimes in the car (no maps) but screen on it usually charges 1% every 2 minutes, but sometimes it can take 6 minutes when less Han 90% charged. Also I usually use magnetic charging cable, but did try usb cable but did not notice any difference.

The type of cable you use can also affect charging speed

You'll need to be on a kernel that supports usb fast charge mode. Problem solved.

It's the point too... if you are using data cable(which many people using cuz came w/ phone.) Try charge only cable.

Seems really odd to me..
The phone only has 3200 mAh.. If it drained 2 amps while using navigation it should run out of juice after just over 1.5 hours without charger connected... That seems pretty fast..
As I can play games on the HTC One with MHL cable connected without the battery going down I can only wonder why the navigation is so power hungry..
Maybe it can handle it in power saver mode.

Get a good quality cable also and a good quality car charger, cheap things won't work as expected...
I'm always using genuine Sony cables and chargers when ever I need to buy any, even when I had my Note 2 and S4 I used Sony car charger ( rated at 1.2A ) and Sony cable also.. never had any problem with them...
I also have a portable 6000mAh battery, when I use the bundled cable I can only charge one full charge max, but when I used Sony cable I can have 2 full charges and even more ( charges both Galaxy S4 and Xperia S from less than 10% and still have power for at least another half a charge )...

Bad cell/GPS signal will cause the phone to use more battery on keeping the connection alive. try putting your phone more near windscreen rather than the center dashboard.
a reboot sometimes may help, too..

Fast Charge Kernel

So I am eagerly awaiting S-Off and flashing new ROMS/kernels/radios and I started to think about how slow my Rezound seems to charge. I know that the Thunderbolt had some kernels that included fast charge capability. Just think of the extra juice we can get in a short amount of time with FastCharge, UnderVolt/UnderClock, and more precise power management.
Does anyone know if this is in the works for the Rezound?
My Rezound charges up pretty fast, especially compared to my Droid Charge.

if your charging on USB it wont be giving the phone full power, to remedy this get a spare cable and disconnect the data so only the power is working
not sure if it works on the computer, but in my car it definitely worked
yeah definitely do a search for USB AC Charging. You can take those car chargers and wall chargers that don't give you the full 1A and do a quick solder job on them to make them work. I just did it with two of mine and it works great. Battery info now says Charging (AC) instead of charging (USB) and they both pull north of +700mA while charging instead of ~+300mA when on regular USB.
Yeah they called it the charge cause its always on the charger

i did that. opened one up and clipped the green & white data cables. the phone still says "charging usb" though and doesn't seem to charge much faster...
Yea, I have tried every possible method of grounding out the data pins. I currently have my phone connected to a computer power supply I converted to a desktop supply with 4 USB charging ports. It can supply up to 13A if the device needs it. The data pins are all shorted and the housings grounded. The phone still says USB Charging....It does seem to pull more current and does seem to be charging faster.
I know that there is some hardware limit on the charging current, but with an SBC kernel (please someone make one...) I think that this bug will be fixed. I am going to try the Trickle Charge technique from previous HTC phones to get a full 100% charge. I will let you all know how it goes.
Or ...
Fast charging is built in ...
... turn off your phone when charging, and use a 1A charger.
DONE.

So I tested this idea that Fast Charging is "built-in", I used a usb cable that I split connected through an Ammeter to test how much current the phone was drawing from the charger in the one and off state. From my tests I found that my phone, no matter what the state does not draw more than 400mA from the supply. My charger is capable of supplying up to 13A to the four usb ports I installed. I also tested this with the HTC stock charger rated at 1A. This had the same results. I think that there is a hardware/software limit built in.
Just to be clear and justify its place in Dev, this thread is asking if there are any developers out there who are working on an SBC (Superior Battery Charging) Kernel for the Rezound. I fully understand the workings of power supplies (I'm an Electrical Engineer) and am just trying to see if anyone is working on this.
And it still belongs in General. That doesn't justify it. If YOU developed a Kernel, or were posting it, then it could be posted here. Questions, suggestions, complaints, ideas, etc belong in General.
Not sure accurate battery monitor widgets are, but mine has shown upwards of 850mah on charging and over 700 on draw (never saw that on my thunderbolt).
It does seem to slow down as it gets close to full (over 90%), then I never get more than 200mah charge.

Why doesnt my old Car Charger charge the Amaze 4G?

Hi There,
I have had a dual USB car charger in my car for 3 years now (its something like this), I charge everything that has a USB cable with that, so now I got my Amaze and it either charges very slowly or doesnt charge, in fact the phone says the "power is no enough to charge the phone" or something like that even though it shows its charging and the orange light glows. I think the charger is 500mAh and that may be the issue. At home I use a Blackberry charger 700mAh and its great charges everything fast.
I was hoping someone who has car charger experience could chime in! This phone needs a better battery, or needs all the spying apps wiped out that constantly drain the battery, seriously does google need to know my every move and what direction I am pee'ing at the gas station? Call me a conspiracy theorist but I think all information about all sensors (including mic and keyboard) are constantly sent to both Google, CIQ and HTC. At least with the G2 it was only being sent to Google, otherwise how the hell does the phone use up 1730mAh of battery when you barely use it??
Thanks!!
It's not Google that wants to know if you're peeing against the wind...its T-Mo...lol The charger I use works fine...its a USB Cig Lighter and I'm using my old Moto USB Chord. I also have a regular cig Lighter charger and it works fine too...

I used this for my little road trip to san marcos from san antonio, gps was on and brightness was about 50% if not a little bit more but was still abe to see it with the sun out. anyways it kept my phone charged, it may have shown 90% was left but i had reset the phone battery life was at 100% i would recommend this charger to anyone.

u bought a car charger at walmart for my nexus1, now that i got the amaze i used that same charger but it seems like its not charging my amaze or maybe it just could'nt keep up.. like one time me and my girlfriend was on a trip, i was using the gps, battery was halfway so i plugged it in then after a while i had this battery is less than 20%.. so i ended up using my girlfriend's vibrant.. then my younger brother bought a MT4G which came with some extras including a car charger, so i tried his charger and my amaze is charging perfectly fine..

Sony wall charger not performing as rated??

I felt that the stock Sony wall charger was not performing as rate 1500mah.
Z ultra has a 3050mah which means that the 1500mah charger will need like max 2.5hours to full charge the battery.
But mine need more tha
n that.
So i use an amperage meter to measure it and found that is just 900mah/1500mah.
I tried my S4 charger and is rated at 1300mah.
In this measurement i used the same Sony cable which is connected to my Z Ultra.
Did anyone here have this issue too??
I'm using the magnetic dock, and i'm getting everything between 800-1300mAh. It takes around 2 hours to fully charge it.

I am using an app called battery monitor widget and I am experiencing the same thing. Normally seems to charge between 800-900 at best I have seen 1100 but never close to 1500 or so.
I am planning on getting the "quick" charger to see if something is wrong with mine.
This is using the stock cable, if I use a different usb cable (thicker even, will not even get to 500).

Battery drains while navigating and CHARGING?

How is this even possible? While using NAV, my G3 is plugged into the car charger is still decreasing in battery life. Albeit slower than when not charging, but it still goes down even though it is charging. What gives?
Using a charger bought at VZW.
Make sure the charger is 2.1 amp...if its a 1 amp, the combo of GPS, data, and screen on will still kill it.

I had this problem starting all the way back on Galaxy Nexus - crappy chargers and cables do not provide enough power to run the phone and the screen. My research and trial and error on many chargers lead me to understand that not only do you need a good high power charger, you need a good cable too. I now run 18awg charge-only cables exclusively as well as a 2.1amp charger. This pair has worked on all my devices since including fast charging on my G2 and G3.
Note that a charge-only USB cable has the data pair shorted and will only work for charging - will not work for data transfer. However the wires inside are thick and work great cars or other situations where you don't need the cable for data.
This is what I use:
Cable

Charger

This company is from Hong Kong, but they have pretty fast shipping. It is the only place where I can find (affordable) heavy gauge USB cables.

Slow charging with phone turned On

Hello dear fellows- i am facing a very strange issue on my lg g5 (850).
I have a third party charger (Aukey QC 2.0) with a usb A to Usb Type C cable. This charger never failed me once on any of my Samsung phones. Quick charging always worked as it should but with lg g5 its charging speed is very slow. According to Ampere app its just 310 mA. After connecting this charger it even shows fast charging notification but fast charging is not there.
Today i've decided to charge it after turning it off completely and guess what... It was charging really fast as it should while turned On.
Now i am confused whether it's LG's software which is preventing 3rd party cables/chargers to charge fast while turned On or is it something else.
Any input guys or similar experience?

Unfortunately, the LG charger was lost last week during my travel so by chance I had this Aukey charger lying around which is Quick Charge 2.0 supported so i am trying to accomplish the original results with it until i'll get my hands on a QC 3.0 compatible charger.
Hm, my Aukey Quickcharge car charger even works fine with my phone.
Make sure you aren't using the phone while charging it, it will always charge much slower.

I can confirm that the LG software does not prevent fast charge with 3rd party chargers and cables.
I'm using a 3rd party QC 3 charger with a 3rd party cable, and fast charging is working just fine when phone is powered on.
And in Battery Monitor Widget I can see that it actually is fast charging and is using QC 3 to throttle charging amperage.
However I've experienced a couple of times, when changing cable in the charger, that it wouldn't fast charge. It was solved by removing the cable from the charger and connect it again, and then it works just fine afterwards.

Seems like slow charging has something to do with the heat/temperature of the battery or overall phone. If i try to charge it when the battery temps are around 30 then it charges really fast but if the temp is above 30 then software somehow restricts the fast charging to avoid any damages.
I am not sure if the above analysis is valid but my observation has lead me to this point only so far.

I learned 2 things from my testing using ampere and a drok USB current meter:
First, ampere isn't really that accurate when it comes to this phone and charging currents. It was consistently about 200mah off.
Secondly if the phone is even somewhat warm, it will limit the charge current to ~300 mah with the screen on. However if you turn the screen off, it returns to full charging speed (1.8 amps in the case of my charger) I think it is some sort of thermal throttle to keep the battery from getting too hot.

That really is frustrating. I always see fast charging when plugged in, although it definitely is not fast at all if you are using it or have the screen on .
Are you plugged into a wall outlet directly? Not an extension cord? Sounds like a warranty replacement may be in order, it's possible there's something faulty with your USB C connector.
Have I not voided warranty with unlock? thanks
Tried with xiaomi charger and it works, no joy with original.
Must be faulty lg charger using same cable
I have LG G4 and I was facing the exact same problem. The phone would charge very slow while screen was on. Once I let the screen go off the phone charged at the expected rate. It seems LG is incorporating some serious throttling in their phones.

I think you can not fast charge while the phone is turned off. Maybe someone can start another thread where we can compare battery logs because this will help to see the amount of time used for charging. Is there any way of seeing if the device is using QC 2 or 3?

This is a problem with the make of the charger. I have some Choetech QC chargers, and the programming in the QC is faulty. Some safety mech kicks in, turns off the charger, then turns back on again, over and over. I have some Tronsmart chargers and there is no issue. Of course, the OEM LG one works fine too.
