[Q] Enabling WMA support at system level? - Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Alright, so I know that by asking this question that I'm about to open a can of worms, mostly consisting of comments like "Nope, can't be done" or "use [Insert media player app name here] player instead". I don't want to use other players, I'd like to have native Android decoding support for lossless WMA audio files.
Is there any way to add a WMA codec to android so that any and all apps installed on my phone can read and play WMA files? I am running LiquidSmooth ROM 4.4.2 on my Motorola XT912 (Droid RAZR), but I am posting here in hopes that an answer can be found for anyone's benefit regardless of device.
As for why I care about WMA support (as I'm sure someone might ask), a large portion of my media library is in Windows Media Audio 9.2 Lossless file format, and I am running out of hard drive space to convert my library to WAV or FLAC (the latter of which I can't get my computer to support at all - I like to have my files at lossless if possible, especially for personal archival purposes).
tl;dr does anyone have the knowledge to insert a WMA codec into the Android system?
(If I'm posting in the wrong forum someone please let me know and hopefully a mod can move it to the right location. Again, I'm posting in the general android forums in hopes that somebody else is looking for this, regardless of device)

I'd like to know the answer to this myself! It seems like a real OS would have provision for adding different codecs.

question about media player

i have searched the forums and i cant really figure this one out. Basically the media player of my imate refuses to play .mpg or .avi. When i click on the video file it tells me to open the program associated with this file first, when i use windows media player and update the library it fails to locate the file. I have tried playing files from both the storage card and the internal memory but have had no success. Im using the default windows media player in a CID locked g4.
If i am missing something completely obvious or i havent given enough info then i apologise in advance for my ignorance but i hope someone can assist me with my problem.
thanks
This should be a codec problem.
Media player isn't shipped with the necessary codec to handle MPEG (I may be wrong...) and what codec is your avi encoded with.
You'd better try with another player like TCPMP for example as it supports many formats.
Also, Windows Media Player is able to trancode audio and video so it suits your device.
BTW, this isn't a G4 specific issue.
Next time, ask your question in this thread : you will get more feedback.
ok thankyou for highlighting my faults, and thankyou for your prompt response i will try your advice. Hopefully this will solve my problem. Next time i will post in the appropriate forum.
Missing Codecs
Hi bwesty,
I had the same issue with my I mate K-JAM not playing AVI's, download TCMP & AAC audio codec (search this forum) will fix your problem, unfortunately I haven't tried MPG's yet....

[Q] Problem playing apple lossless music

Hey all, just asking about a problem that I have with the music player. I have an ipod, so I have to use itunes and have been ripping my CDs in apple lossless format. For some reason, despite the HD2 supposedly supporting the m4a format, the player just skips the song every time. Anyone know how to solve this (if possible)?
Sorry if someone posted this already. I don't think there is DRM if I rip it with my own computer.... right?
No, no DRM. (Note: even the stuff you buy through iTunes has been free of DRM for years.)
The problem here is that the HD2, like most non-iPod music playing devices does not come with out-of-the-box support for Apple Lossless.
Container != codec. The HD2 can handle the m4a container format just fine, but that doesn't mean it knows what to do with the Apple Lossless Audio Codec (ALAC) stream inside.
Possible solutions:
1) convert files
2) find something that plays ALAC on Windows Mobile
If you happen to be using Mac OS X, the first option's easy using the awesome XLD. Not sure about easy Windows solution, but you can probably use iTunes to convert ALAC to WAV at least.
Second option, I have no idea.
Awesome. I'll check it out. Thanks!

[Q] what audio formats will play on the streak

What audio formats does the Streak play?
I never had so much trouble looking up the answer to such a simple question.
So experimentation shows that it doesn't play lossless wma files.
Is there a lossless format that will play on it?
get PowerAMP it plays plenty of file types:
mp3, mp4/m4a (including alac), ogg, wma*, flac, wav, ape, wv, tta (* some wma pro files may require NEON support)
I love it, it's automated, so when I plug in my headphones (even BT ones) it resumes play.
the basic player is just that, basic.
I'd link it, but I'm new, look it up on appbrain.

Good question. I can only speak for FLAC support as I don't use anything else.
The only Android media player that I know of that recognises FLAC is PowerAMP
http://powerampapp.com/
I second @bugmenotacc's endorsement.
I tried PowerAmp and it didn't play the album I ripped to flac.
I read the help section this morning (amazing what you can learn when you do that) and found out about selecting folders instead of the android library and lo and behold flac files play. Looks like I'll probably end up buying PowerAmp.
Yes it gets a bit confusing, glad you got it sorted too.
I loaded about 6 albums to my sd card today and set Android Settings to pull in the album artwork. Which all happened very quickly and seamlesly.
It is probably old fashioned of me but I prefer to set a Music folder rather than always have the app search my device for files.
Enjoy the app.

[Q] WMA Support?

So I haven't had any luck getting WMA lossless files to play on the 4.0. The vendor descriptions all state WMA support but the manual doesn't mention WMA. When I try to play any of my WMA files I get a "Sorry, the player does not support this type of audio file" message. I've tried with the file on both the internal memory and on the SD card with no luck.
Has anyone else run into this? Thanks in advance for everyone's help.
Andrew
Either use another media player app or convert your WMA files to a type that is more widely supported. Personally, unless you own a Zune, there should be no reason to keep your audio in WMA, especially since the Galaxy player handles FLAC all day long without issue. Not to mention that if the SGP is capable of playing WMA, your files are most likely DRM'd, which would be throwing that error.
yeah i would recommend converting your music to mp3. wma has very limited suport and why waste space on your device just for an app that will play a few files?
just google "wma to mp3 converter", there are many free programs that will easily convert your files.

[Q] Playing WAV files

My phone system e-mails me my voicemails as WAV file attachments (doesn't support anything else). Apparently WP8 does not natively support playback of these files. I have installed an app that will play them but it doesn't seem to be accessible from within the e-mail app. Anyone have a suggestion on how to playback WAV received in an e-mail?
I can directly play them from the email attachment.. No need for additional apps..
Just tap it once to download the *.wav attachment and when the download finished tap it again to play the *.wav file...
Evidently there are a few different WAV encoding or encapsulations. Not every voicemail system uses the same one. In fact, Windows Phone 7 used to play a friend of mine's voicemail system's WAV files just fine, but his new Windows Phone 8 won't.
If you find a WAV that works, and one that doesn't, opening it in something like Audacity can tell you if there is something funky like a bit rate or some other audio compression CODEC that might render it unplayable. Doesn't help unless they can convert to MP3 or something...
There are tons of threads about this over here:

Great...I'm NEVER going to get my users off iPhone as long as I have to hunt down workarounds for simple things like this.
Voice mails on WAVE?
That is such a waste of bandwidth, when the same could've been done on mp3 or amr format.
But seriously, why all this limitations with file formats on Windows Phone 8? It is ridiculous.
Same issue here. Really shameful and makes me wonder why I trusted MS and WP8 in the first place.
WAV is just a container format, like AVI. Most of the time, WAV is used for uncompressed PCM data, but it's possible to shove pretty much anything in there, including MP3 and various oddball formats. Saying that a given piece of software doesn't play back WAV is an invalid complaint. Figure out what's inside the WAV file, and then complain about that.
