Just came back from the Verizon store.
They are sending me a new s4 and i should get it by Tuesday.
What's the chance I'll get a mdk or a 4.4.2. And what's the chance I'll get a charge for sending them my rooted rommed out phone.

I think it will be impossible to get a phone that has mdk on it. They might charge you for being rooted and haveing a custom rom. Everyone knows that giving root access to apps allows them to break your usb port, Duh

Send rooted eris to verizon

Ok im getting a replacement for my eris and what would happen if i sent a rooted eris to verizon
Sent from my Eris using XDA App
Who knows? Either way just unroot. Flash the 2.1 image.
I DO NOT RECOMMEND SENDING A ROOTED ERIS TO VERIZON! UNROOT TO BE SAFE IT IS NOT HARD.
But I did send a rooted one in for a refurb and nothing was ever said. Didnt get a bill for the phone or dropped from verizon. I honestly don't think they even look at these phones once u mail them in... Probably just wipe it back to factory setting, check and see whats wrong with it and if it can be refurbed.

[Q] Do I need to unroot my Thunderbolt to have it activated?

I just bought a Thunderbolt, and decided to root and try some ROMs out before deciding to make it my daily driver.
Now that I'm ready, I need to take it into Verizon to get a SIM card, and need to know if I need to unroot it, or if I can just flash a Sense ROM (doubt any Verizon employee would know the difference).
Thanks!

I had lots of problems when I tried activating while I was rooted. I had to unroot, lock the bootloader, and have a Verizon tech do a master reset on the phone to get it to activate.

Is there any way I can perform this master reset myself?
No. You have to be on the phone with the tech and do a factory reset at the same time. You should first try to go back to stock and activate it normally. You will need a new sim probably.

I took a rooted HTC TBolt that was loaned to me into the Verizon store a few weeks ago to have it activated. I did get a lecture about how the warranty was voided by rooting (it wasn't under warranty any longer anyway), but they activated it no problem.
I traded a Droid charge for my tbolt and called support and had it switched to my account. It was s-off and rooted and it worked just fine. I know its a little different than op but i think you will be okay.

HELP Replacement phone coming! Should I re-lock and flash to stock??

I attempted to activate a rezound with viperez to one of my lines at the Verizon store. And the guy actually did it for me with no questions asked. It can get data and can receive texts but the phone identity says unknown. After this I went home and flashed a stock rooted ics vigor ROM in hopes of activation. After several calls to customer service and 4G technical support. The techs are sending me a new Rezound. I will get my replacement first before they get this one back. However..
This rezound is s-off, unlocked, and rooted. Will they deny me service or charge me the full phone price if they see this? I heard they really don't check and destroy them as soon as they arrive. I've also heard that due to the FCC Verizon can't deny my warranty if it's modified. They will just frown upon you and not recommend it.
If you have actually read this far, I really would appreciate your advice! As the replacement will be here overnight tonight. I need to know my course of action
Thanks

It's always best to relock the phone and they can if they want charge you a fee for third party software on the phone. With that said I have never heard anyone say they was charged that for sending a rooted phone back after getting a replacement.

New GS4 with MDK or ME7

Has anyone purchased a GS4 in the last 1-2 weeks from Verizon? I'm going to probably be getting one around the beginning of September and I'm wondering whether or not I'll be able to buy it in the store WITHOUT the ME7 update.
Purchased one 2 days ago... From Atlanta ga still had mdk.. They didn't make me update or anything though it did pop up as soon as the phone activated.

Purchased one online from Verizon last week. Got it Monday and it did not come with ME7.
Sent from my SCH-I545 using xda premium
got my a week ago... ME7 OTA'd before I could get it out of the store.
If you buy the phone new it's a good possibility the phone came from the warehouse and to get the ME7 update the REPs will install it.
If you tell them not to, they can't refuse you and say we HAVE to.
IF they do ask for a manager.
Best of luck.
I purchased one this past tuesday and it was with MDK not ME7

The box says what software version it was flashed with on the box. If it says MDK, then don't put your SIM in at all. Tell them you simply don't wish to activate it in the store. Just turn it on and confirm. If the phone itself is ME7, show them the difference in listed s/w versions, and say you want one that hasn't been opened previously. Yes, they will think you're ridiculous, so maybe don't do this at your regular store. But you'll have an MDK phone.
If you're ordering online, just open the box and still don't put the SIM in. Then root it, and block SDM.apk and FWupgrade.apk to block the update. Then and only then should you activate it. Just a heads up for you or anyone else reading this thread that is about to buy an S4 and doesn't know that yet.

wish I'd known all that. oh well for what it's worth, I'm rooted via the SD card method.
GS4 transmitting via tapatalk...
By the phone from best buy or online and do not accept the ota, for right now most of the phones are shipping MDK. At some point in time this will change so do not wait to long

Thanks for the heads up. I plan to have them just give me the phone and let me do the unboxing. If I have to I'll showcase my tech savvy to assure them I can handle it or just tell them to simply NOT update via OTA. Either way its good to know I still have a chance at MDK. Thanks everyone.

I'm gonna perform a wipe on mine this week and see if I can take it back to MDK. Seems doable?

No. Once on ME7 there is no way to go back to MDK.

if I read this correctly < http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2301259 >, using the "no-wipe" procedure to unroot, can't I elect to reflash with MDK?

No because of the way the bootloader is signed you CANNOT flash back to MDK, you will hard brick your phone. Samsung took a page from Motorola and lock out the previous versions.

thanks obsidian (and mrjingles)... I appreciate the save.
Just picked up 2 for the Wife and I. They were both MDK. We live in Hawaii.

If you are buying a 32GB (wish the Developer Edition came in 32GB) you will very likley get ME7 since they all drop ship from warehouse distribution. The 16GB in the stores still are running MDK though.

This is good to know because I am planning on picking up the 16GB as I have a 32GB Micro from previous phone that I plan on using for storage once I get it. Here's hoping that when I get it in September they are still selling the MDKs

Motherboard Swap

I just bought this mint condition galaxy s4 sch-i545 off of my friend. I want cyanogen mod because that is what I usually get on my phones, but my friend updated this phone and there is no way to unlock the bootloader. Is there a way that I could switch out motherboards from a junk phone to this nice phone in order to get the unlocked bootloader? I need the MDK bootloader or below to be able to get the new rom, or I could switch out with a phone that is already unlocked. But can I swap motherboards?

good luck finding one you need a board thats still running =< 4.2.2 aka firmware ending with VRUMDK
Is there also a possibility that I could also switch a board from another carrier? Like if I found a sprint or T-Mobile board could I switch that.
