Is there a way to make Google play edition? - T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy S 5

Hi i came from the nexus 5 and i like the whole stock android thing and the nav bar is something that i like better then capacitive buttons . But the s5 is a beast of a phone. so i was wondering if there was a way to get or make it into a google play edition phone. i cant't seem to find one but maybe there is xposed way of doing it. if you have a way or know of a rom let me know.

I am in the same boat. We are going to have to wait until the S5 GPE hits the streets then someone will pull the Rom and set it up for the regular S5s. That's basically what happened on the S4.

Yup. What he said. Once the GPE comes out, it should be a relatively easy port.

Wife wants Thunderbolt to act like her Samsung, what ROM?

My wifes Fascinate is dying, I was given a Thunderbolt and rooted it. She just can't get use to the phone's interface. Is there a ROM that makes it look like Samsung's interface?
I also need everything to work, camera, wifi, 4G.... Am I asking to much?

As in it having touchwiz? What exactly is she looking for to carry over from what she used on her samsung? Try holo launcher and see if she likes that better. Its on the play store
Put her on liquid ics and then get the touchwiz launcher. Requires android 4.0+

In another thread he said wife needs camera and camcorder to work so liquid is out. Would the touchwiz work on the nusense ics rom?

Yes although its a stock kernel so no over clocking and probably slower. Unless there is an aosp ics rom fully working

On the main text section that shows all texts from different people, if you slide your finger across their name from left to right it calls them, if you go right to left it txt's them. She also complained about how many steps there are to make a phone call (that might just be learning this new phone).
I keep hearing about Liquid and it sounds perfect except the video camera doesn't work. She takes a lot of videos of the kids, so it's not an option.
theres a widget in sense called people fav. where you can add their contact to it and tapping the pic it will give you an option of text or call.
I'll teach her how to use the phone properly and install widgets if I can't get a rom that emulates a samsung.
I guess I have nothing to lose. She doesn't really like the current factory setup, so I guess I'll just flash one of the most common ones mentioned and see if she likes it, since nobody makes exactly what I'm looking for.
Thanks for the suggestions!
I really don't want to sound like a jerk when i say this but, if she wanted the phone to act like a Samsung then why did she get it? Why not just get a Samsung? It's going to be a lot of work for something that may have cost a little more.
The closest thing I can think of is a GB rom with sense removed and using GO Launcher EX with the GO Launcher TouchWiz theme. Both are in the play store. For me Go Launcher has always been a little laggy but if she's used to Touch Wiz then she's used to it..

I understand your question, your not a jerk. I got the phone for FREE and she hadn't ever used any other type of Android phone (other than her Samsung Fascinate), so she wasn't aware they were different.
Thanks for the help.

Gotcha, I understand completely. My family were sold the HTC Thunderbolt because they were told it was a good phone. I took it because it was free with our contract when the district manager set us up. It isn't a horrible phone but I have definitely owned better.

Collecting Opinions!

I just got back home with my shiny new S4 and I can't wait to get the thing rooted and rom'd. But! Before I take the dive, I'd like to test the waters of this lovely phone's community.
If you have a few minutes to spare:
- What rom/kernel are you using? Why?
- What is one thing that you wish you knew about the S4 before flashing?
Thanks!

Before you get to excited, you might want to check what firmware version you have.

As far as I know (which I'm not 100%sure since I'm on mdk) you cannot flash custom roms yet if on the latest update (mj7 with Android 4.3) If you're lucky enough (unlikely) to get one with me7 firmware, you can flash custom roms with safestrap. This phone is not doing so well in the development area as I expected it would before release. Hopefully someone can figure out a way around the locked down bootloader

That makes it painfully obvious that you haven't read much around here.
What you first need to know is what firmware version you have. That determines what you can do.
What you asked is equivalent to saying that you have a car then asking what you can do to improve it - no data on what year or model, or what you want to do. Without that info, how can anyone help you? If you can't even be bothered to figure out what build you have to start with, nobody can suggest anything to help you.

I managed to figure that out a couple minutes ago. I actually got pushed to ME7 while I was rooting my S4 (ironic?) and was able to stop it after that. So, it seems I was one of the lucky(ish) ones. Would've been nice to stay at MDK, but SafeStrap seems to be one hell of a tool.

Hey there... I remember you from the Fascinate forums. I finally ended up getting an S4 about 2 1/2 months ago and for the most part it's a great device, but you can't expect near the same freedom as you had with the Fascinate.
When I got mine I ended up with ME7 so it sounds like you're in the same boat. I have mine rooted, but decided not to use Safestrap because of the limitations it brings (mainly the storage issue). I'm pretty happy with how I have mine set up and it's pretty snappy overall, but I really do wish I had gotten an MDK in order to really flash roms like I used to on my Fascinate.
If you choose to use Safestrap then go nuts and I hope you find some roms you like (Hyperdrive seems to get the most love around here from what I've noticed). I'll just quickly list off the modifications I did to mine that got it to where I like it:
-Froze all bloat with Titanium, including the SDM 1.0 (to prevent unwanted updates)
-Got rid of e911 icon and ongoing WiFi notification
-Installed the International Voice Dialer with call recording
-Installed Volume Boost mod (increased it around 50% over stock)
-Installed Xposed Framework so I could use Greenify features
-Used Greenify to hibernate all misbehaving apps (examples would be Facebook and Google Play Store) (... this increased battery life A LOT)
-Installed AdAway (adblocker)
-Turned all animations down to .5 in developer options and disabled all hovering effects on the lock screen
Doing all that really made this thing a lot better than it was, but I'm still hoping for a true bootloader unlock to start playing with it more. I have found a lot of the Touchwiz features to be quite useful, like the voice control stuff, camera app, etc, so I would probably stick with a modded Touchwiz rom if I had the option. Good luck.
edit: Oh and another thing you might not be aware of - the camera is set to 9.5MP by default in the app, you need to go into settings to use the native 13MP resolution.
One thing to note that no one mentioned (and in case you didn't read elsewhere) is that with SafeStrap you can not use ROMs with custom kernels. So that means no AOSP based ROMs like CM, Carbon, PACman and others since they are all using a custom kernel. At least until they get KEXEC working with SafeStrap (if they get it working). So basically you can only use modded TW roms with a stock kernel.

Converting to Developer or Google Play Editions?

Ok. So I'm going to go pickup an HTC One. I'm coming away from a Galaxy S2 that just won't work right anymore. I'm seeing references to converting to the Developer Edition or the Google Play Edition. What are the advantage/disadvantages to doing so and if I need to can I easily revert back to the original stock configuration?

Give the phone a chance Stock .. it's a really nice device Sense 5.5 is awesome
Converting to GPE almost never lasts they all come back...
Developer edition is just a cleaned up version of stock (all the carrier bloat removed)
Ahh ok. I was really just wondering what the difference was. I'm liking stock so far.

Just got a Note 3 to mess with and wanted to weight the options

So My wife decided she wanted my Sprint Note 4 and gave me her Note 3.... Now I am not using this as an actual phone, mostly as a gaming accessory (arx control)/games/wifi/bluetooth/gps/audio
It is running n900pvpueok2 Android 5.0
Anyways
What are my options for custom roms on this guy, I want to keep the system on the light end and definitely want root and ad blocking.
I see Cyanogenmod "went away" so I guess that's not an option
I am sort of confused on which roms are going to work on this version of the OS and the built in sprint **** is driving me nuts because it keeps popping up.
Oh, I carry my note 7 currently as a phone but once my Google Pixel XL shows up... that will finally go back
Any rom in the sprint section will definitely work. This one seems to be the popular one at the moment: https://forum.xda-developers.com/no...sprint-users-rejoice-darklord-modded-t3498912
Honestly, the 5.0 stock rom will give you better battery life than any custom rom mainly due to custom roms using user-made kernels. If you want the latest 5.0 stock rom N900PVPSEPL1 with all security updates and whatnot, flash it through odin. I don't remember which version of Xposed is safe for 5.0, so you might need to do some research for that. Xposed is needed for youtube adblocking and general adblocking. There is the"mother of ad blocking" on xda for general ad blocking through hosts file.
If you want to use bleeding edge custom roms like nougat or note7 ports, head down to the main note 3 section https://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-note-3
Those roms are difficult to get cell service on sprint devices without great efforts like editing build.prop and installing apps like 4g switcher to MAYBE get it, but you said you don't use it as a phone so it shouldn't matter much. Some might still give you popup crashes of the phone app, so either way going through that route will be a ton of trial and error.

potential new phone

I'm thinking about buying a new phone I currently have the pixel XL and I'm conflicted between the S9+ and the pixel2/3 so I came here to see what the S9 is like I loved Samsung when I had the S5 but it had some problems and I was curious if they were fixed
1. Does the keyboard lag insanely after about a few months?
2 can you use something other than TouchWiz on Samsung?
3. Is it easy to root?
4. How is the development for it? Is there a lot of development as far roms and kernels etc etc?
5. can you unlock the bootloader?
6. how is the speed and camera?
7. would you recommend it?

Ususaly i like to assist users if i can, but now i say that you better do your own homework and learn something along the way. All your questions can be easily answered if you use XDA and Google or YouTube.

1) That happens?
2)Yes, there a plenty of custom launchers, but its not TouchWiz anymore and its far closer to stock google. Well, as close to stock as Samsung goes. Think HTC Sense and then add a bit more stuff to it. Just a little.
3)Not tried, but I would imagine theres a way to do it written in the forums
4)Its still a pretty new phone (only just a couple of month I think?) So I imagine people are working on plenty. Keep checking back, I suppose, would be my advice
5)Never tried on a Samsung. I just know that you can flash things either using ODIN, or using TWRP if you have that flashed.
6)Both amazing. A lot of people say that the camera doesnt quite match up to the Pixel 2, but for me the difference is so little its not even worth caring about.
7) Yes.
Think so far is the best phone you can buy. If I need to point out a flaw for me and a few some could be the battery but no stopped apps and slow downs or heat up nice and smooth love there launcher swipe up and app draw pops up nice.

Yeah my s5 was SO laggy no matter what I did, clearing the cache factory resetting etc etc nothing helped it, I would click to bring up the keyboard and it would take a minute or two to come up and that's not an exaggeration lol the same thing happened with my girlfriend who had the same phone, I looked it up and it looks like some people have the same issue on the s8 I figure it might not be enough time for it to appear on the 9+ but thanks for the info
I saw awhile ago that Samsung refuses to allow things to be flashed on their devices unless they're signed by them like roms and things so that effectively killed Odin, I'm not sure if they changed it or if people found a workaround or not, I guess I'll just have to surf the forums a little bit to find out

Get yourself a package disabler (root is not required for some) from the Play Store if you buy this phone, you can disable a lot of services and preinstalled apps to keep your phone fast and snappy.
