I rooted my HTC One M8 and I just want to unroot it and go back to sense 6. Please help.
Just flash a sense Rom. Make sure you wipe system in recovery too.

Why do you want to unroot? Its not necessary to do so in order to return to a Sense ROM, if that is why you want to unroot.
If you aren't comfortable with root access for whatever reason, that is a different matter. But root means more access to various functionality, so for those that have bothered to do so, will typically want to remain rooted.
If you want to remain rooted, and just return to Sense, just flash a Sense stock rooted ROM from Development (as mentioned in a previous response). Or one of the awesome Sense based custom ROMs (highly recommended over AT&T's bloated, gimped trash pile of a stock ROM, in my opinion).
If the intent is truly to return to stock, I believe there is a guide in the General section.

I know, i know...probably sick of these questions by now...
So i typically went the s-off un-official root methods with evo/3vo. Im thinking this time around i want to take a different approach as my needs have changed.
Im much more interested in keeping stock rom/kernel for the time being and being able to use root apps (like tether).
The grey area for me is exactly what does the HTC method of unlock allow me to do? I understand its not S-off.
Is it possible to root my phone and still take OTA's? (via HTC unlock or other methods)
Lastly what is the downside to HTC dev unlock? i understand it marks the phone in some way as unlocked and voids the warranty?
thanks
I know for a fact you could have root and not have to do the HTC unlock.
So what exactly does HTC unlock do then, is there a way to root and still get ota updates?

Unlocking will allow you to: replace recovery, which opens up to much more you can do.

Unlock allows you to flash custom roms, like the Viper Rom.
Direct form HTC's bootloader unlock FAQ guide
Your device is shipped with Security on (S-ON) to protect your system software configuration (such as the bootloader, radio, boot, recovery, system and others). After you have unlocked the bootloader, however, you will have lifted the restrictions on boot, recovery and system. This means you can customize boot, recovery and system images on your phone as you desire. You can easily see that you have successfully unlocked the bootloader by looking at the top of the screen when entering the bootloader screen. Security is left on to protect things like the radio, and SIM lock.

I'm surprised no one has answered your questions. If you're just rooted with a stock ROM you should still get ota's

Thanks ! I'm totally new to the scene (smart phones in general, must less the root scene). While I'm fairly computer literate, I feel like a toddler going "Ooo what's this? " "Why?" "Why?" "what's that? "
Not trying to be a jerk, but any thread with a [Q] should go in Q&A.
I'm more shocked there isn't a s-off wip thread yet however many people haven't git their phone either..

That would eliminate 90 percent of the thread on here.
I agree, meant to put in q&a. If a mod could move it.
So what's s-off give me that HTC dev doesn't?
Can ne 1 confirm plain root and ota working?
Thanks all

s-off allows you to flash radio's and kernels. Unlocking only allows you to flash Roms, and other things that don't effect the kernel or radio images.
IE, none of the aosp roms would be able to be flashed without s-off, because they use different kernels than the stock one.
Root works, and I have installed viperRom and it works well with a few mods that the stock rom doesnt have.
oh crap!! I didn't even think about not being able to flash AOSP without S-off. My only intention buying this phone was to be able to run AOSP ASAP.
But wait, are you sure about not flashing kernels? I thought people with the Evo 3d and S-on were able to flash kernels via flash_image GUI?
sent from my Evo LTE, usually.
So i rooted using the script...painless.
Just what i wanted, root but stock everything. Also picked up a app i saw in the apps section called voodoo something or other, that lets u temp unroot for updates/backup root. Sounds cool, hope it works. SU, wireless tether, and titanium all seem to work fine.
Maybe its just me, but i did notice the phone has some stutters now during startup and shortly after...prob just me

What are the negative repercussions of doing this update?
1) Will I make it harder to root my device?
2) Will I make it harder to install a custom rom of my choice?
3) Will my current programs remain installed in this OTA upgrade from GB to ICS?
Sent from my Evo 3D using the XDA-Developers app.
No.No and Yes. The wonderful thing about this community is that there are a group of people always working on a way to make your experience with your phone more rewarding and fulfilling. If you plan on rooting your device after the ota there's a guide in the sticky thread that will help achieve that goal. You can choose to unlock your bootloader or go all the way and gain s-off. My suggestion is to go s-off. Do your research for compatible roms and kernels for the new hboot you will gain from the ota update called hboot 1.58.
Thank you so much Jsparta, some further questions?
1) Do I care that i am going to get a new hboot? (I just don't want to lose the ability to install the highest performance, cleanest, or most customizable roms).
2) Am I able to go back to this stock GB rom, and can you see any reason why I'd want to? I have no warranty on my phone, so I don't have to worry about being denied warr. service or anything.
Thanks again, Jsparta

To answer your questions at this point in time gaining a new hboot doesn't matter anymore. These wonderful devs have figured out a way passed it. You most certainly will not lose that ability. If you are looking for a fast clean stable and highly customizable roms the meanrom ics and zr3d-xl are good choices. As for returning to stock gb there's no need to. you can return to stock Ics which you can find the ruu file in the cdma dev section.

Regarding #3, there is currently no way to get to root or S-OFF on the Evo 3D without losing data that is not on the SD card. I recommend that you backup as much as you can with a utility like MyBackup that doesn't require root.
If you want to get all the way to rooted and S-OFF, I recently posted a "quick and dirty" guide to get any S-ON Sprint Evo 3D to that configuration. Once you have S-OFF you can flash pretty much whatever you want, including older GB configurations.

I have some questions that I'd like to get some help with, I'm no means an expert, but I have several questions about installing custom roms,
1.Is rooting the same thing as unlocking a bootloader?
2.Can you flash custom roms without root? like the team viper mod
3.If you can, flash without root, what do you have to do in order to go back to stock rom?
The main reason I want to flash custom roms is because I wanted to see if there is an battery improvement, and I honestly wouldnt mind stock rom, but there are so many apps that you cannot uninstall that run in the background and take up ram.I cant stand the bloatware that comes with the AT&T version of the one x+

1. No
2. Yes
3. Have the bootloader unlocked and flash the factory stock rom / ruu. Note: once you unlock the bootloader there will be a flag that prompts it's been unlocked. If you relock it the flag will show relocked incase you are asking if you ever need to send the phone for warranty repairs.

Please excuse my noobish question, but my HTC ONE is currently rooted on 4.1.2 and I am wondering what is the easiest method to update it to 4.2.2 without having to use OTA, which I can't anyways.
Thanks!
Flash a Rom that is 4.2.2. I think the update is barely starting to roll out internationally and might be awhile until ATT gets it.

In addition to just rooting the phone, you need to unlock the bootloader, flash a different recovery and then flash a ROM that uses 4.2.2. I prefer ARHD: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2183023
This ROM gives you 4.2.2 with full sense 5.0 experience without all the bloatware that your carrier most likely installed on your phone. :good:

Sorry I don't have a solid answer for you because as soon as I got my phone, I installed ARHD prior to installing anything on my phone. My guess is YES you will need to redo everything.
I'm currently running the GE gtc one ROM. If you want that.

If say use helium to back it up while you aren't rooted and after that titanium works better, that's what I did anyway

so I have an AT&T HTC one, wanted to know, if i root it - will i be able to install any ROM?
because i saw a thread about CONVERTING it to EU version, and i was wondering why and if i must do it in order to root.
so basically:
1. is the rooting on the AT&T HTC one done differently from any other HTC one?
2. if not, do i still have to go through this conversion guide or can i just root it normally?
2. how can i install a stock, clean ROM without all the AT&T rubbish, and have the OTA updates like on any other normal android?
thanks
If you want to install any ROM, basically u need to unlock bootloader, s-off and change cid to supercid and well root the phone.
