[Q] Restoring a hard bricked GS3 and rooting it. - Galaxy S III Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Alright I'll just start from the beginning since this is just a long chain of ****ery
Rooted my GS3
Installed TWRP
Installed Carbon-JB-NIGHTLY-20130824-0816-D2VZW which is a 4.3 JB rom.
Attempted to install Revolutionary S5 V3 and KK gapps package at the same time.
Hard bricked my phone.
Used this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2581166&highlight=system+software+not+authorized to get my phone to get to Odin.
When attempting to boot phone outside of Odin it just stated that it was running not supported software (unlocked padlock that says custom)
Went onto Samsung and downloaded a Stock 4.3 rom and flashed that with Odin.
Started phone up and was unable to use terminal emulator (no root) to continue with fixes in above thread.
Attempted to root using saferoot, unsuccessfully (updated kernel can't do it).
Attempted to root using CF-Auto-Root-m0-m0xx-gti9300, unsuccessfully.
Attempted to root using Kingo, unsuccessfully.
I do have Samsung Knox :crying:
So now that you're all up to speed to where I'm at, long story short, I need root access on this phone. It has no power button so I lock the screen with a root gesture control app. The back and menu buttons are non functioning so I use a custom UI that adds a back and menu button to the screen. Can ANYONE give me a way to get root back on this frankenstein of a phone? I've never changed a kernel before and I supposed that'd be my next step since I can't saferoot with the kernel I currently have and any thread that explains how I would go about doing it at my current state of ****ery
All help appreciated!

Do you really have an i9300? Check the model number under the battery. i9300 does not have knox.

When I go into application manager and check All I have KLMS Agent and Knox Notification Manager.

Philz touch CWM
Try this philz touch revovery, it has built-in option to root the phone.

You are in the wrong forum and flashing the wrong files for your phone model, hence why you've bricked it and nothing works.
Read the sticky thread on north American models for links to the right forum.

i9305 rooting error

Hi guys,
First of all thank you for all the awesome tips and tricks here, I really learned a lot from the community.
I have a samsung i9305 which I recently purchased to replace my i9300.
I downloaded super su and busy box to my phone but then they didn't work because my phone wasn't rooted (stupid me, i forgot)
so I tried rooting it using this method:http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1914394
and followed each and every instruction perfectly but then my phone wasn't getting rooted (checked on rootchecker basic, although settings stated that my device is modified and triangle counter is 2)
so i did it twice but I still got the same result.
Then I tried this one: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1957273
And I thought it worked properly (since when my phone booted up it said that it was updating the OS)
but then my super su installation was gone and every time I try to open root checker it just gets stuck on the (your system appears to be slow...) and it never finishes checking. Also, sometimes the apps won't open.
Can anyone help me with this issue? I don't want to break/brick this new phone. :crying:
I'm currently downloading the original firmware and im hoping to unroot it by flashing it via odin later. But it's a zip file right and we need the .md5 thing to flash on odin? how do i flash it?
I hope you can help me out and I'm really sorry for the hassle.
Thanks in advance for the help.
Might wanna try the correct forum.

Help: I want to know if I did the update or not.

Sorry if it's being asked a lot. I was flashing ROMs last night and I wasn't in the most stable of mind set. Anyway I wake up to a text from my buddy about this update. I remember doing a Samsung update but not an ota and it never went to download mode. How can I tell if I updated it?
I keep seeing VRUAME7 as the new update but this is my current about info and my build is obviously a different rom but my baseband isn't what I see as the before and after screenshot and I just checked my phone with a root checker and it passed. Sorry for being a noob but I came from a gnex! Can anyone give me an idea how to check if I did or if I'm fine?
Sorry I meant to post this in help / q&a not general sorry please move it!!

You're running a custom ROM (CleanROM), so you don't have the update. You do not want to flash the update since it kills root access and prevents the bootloader workaround. This is discussed in nearly every thread in the forum right now.

Yeah I know I don't want the update (not being a ****) just wanted to make sure that somehow I did update to it. I don't plan on updating. Thank you for the info. I was scared for a second. Thank you.

If you updated you wouldn't have a Root and I don't think you'd have a custom ROM.

The update fails if you have a custom recovery (TWRP or CWM), which is needed to flash roms. So as long as you have a custom recovery the update can't go through

No problem. I came from the Gnex too and there is definitely a little bit of a learning curve with the S4 modding scene compared to the Gnex. Questions are the only way we learn!

Yes. Especially since I don't fully understand this auto Loki (I understand it flashes a pre release kernel that is insecure hence how I rooted the phone via Odin and motochopper in the first pkace), that and with the boot loader still being locked or at least not unlocked and being bypassed I wasn't 100% positive. Now can I flash the new modem.bin from the update via Odin without messing anything up? From this thread:

Thank you everyone, and again if a mod see's this please move to q/a forum I didn't mean to post here!

I will also add or stress on AutoReboot and F.Reset Time should be checked, otherwise their device will bootloop or freeze.

Sorry for the late responds, if anything someone else could use the answer. When using this root method you loose nothing. Everything is as it was before your rooted. I have unrooted too by the way and it shows that I was never rooted.
so. You're saying your knox counter is 0x0 now?

This method WILL trip the knox counter that resides within the bootloader. You may be able to unroot the OS and remove any indication that it ever was while booted in to Android, but the way that CF auto root currently works trips the counter. Directly quoted from the CF thread:

Pay close attention to steps 16-17. Good Luck.
After this update to the newest recovery- cwm or TWRP (making sure you get the working versions for our device) and the development forums are your oyster so to speak.
Edit: Sometimes just flashing a superuser app will do the trick if this is your only issue, but if you came from stock this is how I started back in the day.
Edit: Some ROMs also require root access in developer options set to "apps and adb".
