Storing offline maps with different zoom levels - Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi everyone,
I need an application with which I can store maps with different zoom levels. I remember the application "Istanbul Map" let me do this and I could download Google (or other sources') maps from the zoom level I was in up to the maximum zoom level of my preference. Therefore, assuming that I had downloaded the map, when zoomed out I could only see street names and when zoomed in I could see the shops and their names or any other details corresponding to that zoom level, in case I had set the maximum zoom level to 17, 18 or 19.
However it's been two years that I haven't used that application and now that I downloaded "Istanbul Map" from Google Play I noticed that it doesn't offer the same features as before and it seems that it is specifically for Istanbul. Besides, I need to buy the application in order to use it while the previous versions were free.
Now that I am going on a trip and while on way I might need to zoom in up to the 18th zoom level to see the names of stores or other details. So I need an application that provides me the same feature as the old "Istanbul Map" letting me download Google maps for different zoom levels.
The built-in Google maps application only allows to download a map with a fixed zoom level and it is useless for me.
So, could you please suggest me an application covering my needs?
Thanks in advance

Anyone?

Is it faster than the previous versions on cm7?
Well, I didn't see any noticable upgrade in speed. Still you get the newest version
what about screen resolution
when i update google maps from market the map is not that clear and takes more time to load on cm7 but flashed version of gapps-mdpi-20110301-signed works fine. am i the only one facing this problem?
i have attached screen shots of mdpi and updated one please help
That is common to all maps versions above 5.0. Fonts are not clear on small screen devices. But there is a option to enable large fonts in Labs. Enabling it makes the fonts more readable. But still other signs are blurry. What is the maps version in that gapps bundle you mentioned?

Does navigation work on countries which normally don't ?

[Q] Any way to cache Google Maps offline to FULL level of detail?

Ever since Google started allowing offline maps (both in the old Google Maps incarnation, and in the current one), I have found that when I download a map section for offline viewing, often there are many details missing (small street names, for example).
Does anyone know if there's any way to make Google maps download map tiles to their maximum level of detail (the level you could get if you zoomed in all the way), including all street names? You'd think this would be a given, but it seems not to be.
Searching around for discussions of this, most articles and forum threads are just about tile caching in general, not level of detailed cached.

Hello Tim,when i travel long distances i use an app called locus,it has many options plus offline maps with details.

Is such an app possible for Android? (plz read)

Range Finder App
An app that accurately measures distance from your smart phone/tablet. Something like this already exists (Smartmeasure), however it’s clunky, troublesome, and obscure. I’m aiming to have this app be used naturally amongst anybody who constantly needs to measure
Goals:
Create a work-around a focused laser beam, which is traditionally used in range finders. that a phone can't provide, you would be unable to get any sort of meaningful reading. Perhaps an algorithm that compares the scale of items it finds in the camera to a stored set, and give approximations.
Use the phone’s sound capabilities to measure distance
Use the phone’s map/compass capabilities to measure distance
Use a phone's accelerometer to track the phones's movement, and take a series of image with the same camera as you point the phone towards a target to measure distance
Hey Zabrak999, this is really a wonderful idea but I haven't seen such an app till date. You can contact some Android developers to get such an app developed for you.

[free app] Maps Tool

Maps Tool - new free app (with no ads either) to work with gps coordinate, maps and grids, including public land survey system (township, range, section)!
Do you happen to own some real paper maps? If so, my new app is designed exactly to make using them simpler. Or maybe you are just interested to learn something about geodesy, navigation and cartography? If so – read on.
While most online and other digital maps are now standardized around using decimal degrees latitude/longitude pairs using WGS84 geodesic datum, paper maps are not so simple. They use all kinds of different coordinate system. Many use UTM – Universal Transverse Mercator coordinate system that was developed by the United States Army Corps of Engineers in the 1940s. NATO militaries around the world wanted their own thing and developed another grid coordinate system called MGRS. While these two are most popular there are many more other grids, especially once we go to local level. Maps in UK often use something called Ordinance Survey National Grid (OSGB) while Ireland had to use yet another system called Irish Grid.
To make things even more complicated years before recent standardization around WGS84, maps often used other geodesic datum, based on different models of earth ellipsoid and measurements. In fact many historic reference earth ellipsoids are still used in local areas, since they may provide better accuracy of measurements in certain territories. In practice this means that getting coordinates assuming wrong datum can put you hundreds of meters away.
Maps Tool is a powerful app that allows you to convert data between many coordinate system representations and also adjust for various datum. This app currently supports lat/lng, UTM, MGRS, Earth-centered, Earth-fixed Cartesian coordinate system, Swedish Grid, Ordnance Survey of Great Britain and Irish National Grid and many different geodetic datums, including, but not limited to: WGS 84, NAD 27, ED 50, ETRF 89, OSGB 36, OSI 65, RT 90, SWEREF 99, SIRGAS 2000, SAD 69, Córrego Alegre, SICAD, Astro Chuá and SK 42.
By default Maps Tool uses offline HERE+ maps already stored on your phone, but can also use Bing Maps, Google Maps, and OpenStreetMaps for better coverage. Overlays such as topographic map and satellite imagery are also available. Other handy function of Maps Tool include geocoding (finding location by address) and reverse geocoding (find closest address for a given location), sharing your location via sms/email and build-in database of around 3000 major cities and 9000 world airports for quick access (you can just key in a 3-letter IATA or 4-letter ICAO code).
Using web service from BLM (Bureau of Land Management) Maps Tool also gives you access to PLSS (Public Land Survey System) information (township, range, section) as a convenient map overlay (you can search for parcels by TRS or view parcels around you by tapping on the map).
Last but not least, Maps Tool app allows you to see rough altitude information from the GPS module in your phone, or (available as an optional download) query various GIS systems for accurate topographical altitude information including currently supported: USGS (US only), SRTM3, GTOPO30, ASTER and Google.
Best of all this app does not require a data connection to work, so you can take it with you into the field.
It is currently translated to English, Russian and Japanese and if you can help with more languages - please let me know.

[App][Watchface] Landmark - ideal for travellers, photographers

Hi everyone
I've made a new watch face which I've named Landmark. Play store link
It's a geo-locating watch face that shows you a random picture from near where you are. The companion app on the phone lets you then find where the picture was shot (maps link) and by who, and to visit the photo on 500px.
The base version is free, and there's no ads, but some extra options can be enabled with an in-app purchase.
Let me know of any problems / requests as I've not been able to test it out on many devices.
