Development on virtualbox - Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

hey guys i wanted to start developing on linux but i have windows 8.1 as my main OS many people told me not to instal linux above windows cuz it might cause some conflicts ..
so i found the virtualbox as many people currently use it .. now i have few questions :
My specs : 16 gb ram , windows 8.1 , i7 3770
1: What's the best linux destro for developing?
2: Can i develop applications on virtualbox?
3: If so .. How many gigs of ram required for it ?
4: And finally is it better on a virtualbox than installed as main OS in matters of performance (lagging, speed, crash)?

To answer your questions:
1. The best Linux distro for developing is a subjective argument but the most widely used for Android development is Ubuntu.
2. Yes, you can develop applications on Virtualbox using either Eclipse or Android Studio, or elements of the NDK. Linux on Virtualbox gives you the same features a native Linux install does (Except for the way drivers are handled, and other things like that).
3. I would recommend giving 8-10 GB of RAM to the virtual machine you set up in Virtualbox to maximize performance, and minimize compile times.
4. While performance is always better on an native install, however Virtualbox is an excellent mature virtualization product and offers great performance for what you want to do. I have a virtual machine on my laptop running Ubuntu set to use 2 cores, 24 GB of RAM, and 300 GB worth of hard drive space, and it runs very smooth, rarely if ever in the year plus I've run this setup (Ran a similar setup on my desktop with lower specs for years before) has it lagged or crashed.
If you have any other questions let me know I'll be more then happy to answer them.

Glad to help my friend, it's the XDA way and the right way in life in my humble opinion. As far as needing more then 10 GB of RAM, no you won't specifically need more then 10 GB of RAM but the more RAM you have the better, what you can do is set it at 10 now and then if you upgrade simply power off the virtual machine, go to the settings section for that machine in virtualbox (Click on the virtual machine you want then the settings button), the system tab and then under the motherboard tab adjust the RAM amount, re-launch the virtual machine and away you go. I believe the i7 3770 has 4 cores and 8 threads, so I would recommend setting it at 2 cores you shouldn't really need to set it on more, also remember to enable in the virtual machine settings, under the system then, acceleration tab the hardware virtualization options for better performance.

u're right about the i7 , but the OS reads those threads as cores not threads which gives me the opportunity to set rendering on 3dsmax for example on 7 cores and leave one core for pc usage
so i believe that the VB can also read them as 8 cores ? no idea but if 2 cores makes no noteable difference than 4 or more then its cool

easy ubuntu setup
You can install Ubuntu on Windows like any other application, thanks to "Wubi"
Easy and secure way to give ubuntu native access to hardware.
You will have :
- Dual-boot of fully working ubuntu and windows.
- No conflicts nor damage to windows or partitions.
- Ubuntu can be uninstalled at any time.
Good luck

In 3dsmax, Maya, etc. that works but in Virtualbox it won't let you do that as it won't let you set more then the actual physical number of CPU cores your processor has. But, again leaving it at the 2 cores should be more then fine for this situation. On a side-note adding on the the post below yours, while Wubi is good for people who want to experiment with Ubuntu for doing intense tasks the Wubi installation method doesn't have good performance and can cause other headaches down the road.

Yes, been using linux on the desktop for more than 10 years now. Mostly developing, mostly mathematical related. I've used different distro's, but the last 3 years I've settled on ubuntu as it is quick to set up and all software I need is supported for it.

There exists something like VMWare, that allows to run one os inside an other. This works both ways. What also is possible is to use wine in linux, with it you can run windows programs from your linux desktop. This works very well, I use it to manage my tracks in MapSource (a program for garmin sport gps).

It could be, there are alot of different ways to run windows/linux together, you will find what best works you. It is for instance also possible to install the two next to each other, then at boot you choose the os you want to boot into..
There exists a couple of different ubuntu forums. Normally you should get a lot of help. When I got into linux, there existed a linux user group (LUG) at my university. You might see if a LUG exists near you.
I use VMware workstation. It's good Its worth the money Im able to run Ubuntu on Windows using this.

Using linux for gaming, it's like using a F/A-18 Hornet, for transporting pets
and about the windows thing, you can even install WINDOWS on windows, if u know what i mean
haha totally agreed D4rKn3sSyS
i use and ubuntu and win7 they are different on many points but imo
on topic
if you want gaming and you like windows interface just stay on it
still if you want to try it ubuntu play alot of windows games (not fully) like no shaddows and directX things..
linux is nice but you need "terminal work" not like windows with ok buttons...
up to you always !

While technical there is no issue to run it on the mini. I think it is more useful to run this on a tablet. For example the eee pad transformer with dock. This 'transforms' your transformer into a netbook..
There is a method that involves setting up a vnc server. This works well, but does not run at the fastest possible speed (though, it is doable). XDA members are working on a native implementation. This would make tegra2 tablets dual boot. Seems like best of both worlds.
Playing and browsing in the sofa: android. Continuing your project on the go or in the library: linux desktop (for example ubuntu).

[Q] How can i get SwapIt Ram Expander working on my GP 5.0

I just got my GP a few weeks ago I just rooted to install the whatsapp. But now that i want to expand my ram i just cant do it.. It says that the swap function has been disabled.
PS. I also installed the BusyBox Pro
PS2. Its the american version YP-G70
Hmm, idk. I have never even heard of this app until now, and it seems like an interesting idea. The compatibility checker app says my 4.0 is compatible, but I don't want to dish out 8 bucks on something that might not work.

is it really worth it? I read that swap memory will reduce the read-write cycle of your sd card. I don't think that it's a good tradeoff in the long run...

Sd card has at least 100 000 writes per sector so even with heavy use of swap it that would be at least 10-15 years (this program swaps process that are not used often and that just use memory for almost nothing) ..your battery would die much much before. And even if it dies you can buy mikro sd card class 10 cheap and make external to be internal.
Sent from my GT-I9000 using XDA
How can we get this working on the 5.0? I tried the original version of swapper, and I have to say I've never had this little problem with how many programs are running. Usually I close running programs as I stop using them, now I can have facebook, opera, and other memory intensive programs open with almost no slow down in android at all.
the kernel needs to be able to support swap. i don't believe Entropy's kernel does

[Q]Java developement on Android

Hello. I've been wondering for some time now if it's possible to make some Java classes (that you would normally compile and run on windows) on android. Here's the thing; I'm a student and we need to make some silly classes at school. I bought my new SGS3 and I wanted to do all the work on it so I don't have to take my PC to school everytime.
So, is there any kind of emulator or application which could solve my problem?
I know there's Eclipse for Androd Java developement but that's not gonna help me with my problem. I also know that Android has DVM instead of JVM but i just wanna know if there's a workaround.
Thank you,
Krastt
PS: I'm sorry if I this is not the right place to post such a question but honestly it seems the most appropriate.

You could look at ADIE https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.aide.ui&hl=en which is a IDE to run on android to build android apps but you might be able to use it to write java classes.
Or check out my project which lets you run full linux distros on top of android, this its a bit of a work around but you could then install a full java IDE and work from there
While I'm waiting for more ideas I'll check your project. I knew about AIDE but I never tought it might also work with Java classes. Imma try that too.

Multitasking

Sorry if this sounds too noobish. But why cant android have a type of multitasking like symbain. We could choose what apps will be open and when they need to close. I liked the app management much better in symbain. And all that happened in low specs phones.Any way to have a symbian style multitasking???
press the home button for few seconds.
its not exactly a multitasking feature but its something close to it.

Have you ever used a symbian s60 smartphone?... Compared to it android multitasking sucks... Android multitasking works with atmost 2 apps then all get closed...
"Real multitasking is not about the task-switching UI, it's about who controls which processes are allowed to continue running in the background. If the OS terminates processes that the user started without confirmation from the user, then that OS does not provide real multitasking."
And this is the case in android phones. I just want to know why since symbain phones were able to do it and better specs android phones cant.

We know that many Apps Developers are Ubuntu users, and this will helps with new apps for phone.

That's incorrect it uses the same Operating system not the same language apps have to be used on arm based cpus not x86 out 64 bit cpus hence different programming language if a particular PC app doesn't have arm support it won't work
