If your bootloader is unlockable you can flash any FTF for your device (just to be clear any FTF for Z2 will work on your Z2)
If your bootloader isnt unlockable then only ones for your brand ver will work aka verizon Z2 FTFs only work for Verizon, not even generic (it bricks the device)

Regardless of whether your bootloader is unlocked or not, you should only be flashing FTFs that are for your device model. So if you have a D6503, then you should only flash an FTF meant for D6503, and not one that is for D6502.
thank you

GPe is not going to happen soon by the looks, two devs have bricked their Ultras so far...
I'm guessing that your ultra is locked to Bell? then the only option as far as I know is using Bell released firmware untill it is unlocked from Bell

Hi,
my phone is unlocked, i have unlocked it already doe its sim lock free. but unlocking simlock has nothing to do with firmware flash.
so i guess nothing can be done for branded phone to be flashed with google play edition?
Thanks.

Well if it is bootloader unlocked and you want 4.4 have a look at the omni or one of the two CM11 threads.
As for GPe no non GPe are running a GPe rom yet that I know of, there are a few builds that get some way through the boot process but not to a usable system yet

Your phone is CARRIER-unlocked - that is not the same thing as having an unlocked bootloader.
As far as I am aware, ALL Bell Xperia Z Ultra's have a locked bootloader that *cannot* be unlocked.
If you plug your phone in to your computer and run the PC Companion - you can upgrade to 290 - you just cannot have root given the locked bootloader and that the only tested method to root at the moment requires an unlocked bootloader.
Hassan is of course completely right. He's been in pain for too long now, and I'm starting to understand that Bell is indeed the spawn of Satan himself.
You'll never be able to flash a non-Sony ROM on your Ultra, unless Bell chooses to give you the unlock key, or if the world's most competent dev figures it out himself (which has happened several times before, but don't count on it).

So if I understand bell choose to lock our device right?! I think it's time to have a nice talk with a supervisor I didn't want to go bell but the Zu is exclusive to bell here.

Root on Stock Sony 4.4.2 with a locked bootloader is only available via installing via a recovery, which can only be installed from a rooted device or via the exploit found in 4.2 (532).
Which means you will have to downgrade to 532, install [NUT]'s dual recovery (no need to root first, flash the C6806 rooted 757 zip in recovery and then flash the stripped c6806 757 ftf file.
Of course, you could have done that for a short while using the US generic / unbranded files posted in the dev thread.
As far as I know the bootloader is locked on the bell version and cannot be unlocked which is the reason I won't buy it even though they are selling used for cheap in my area

I'm in the same boat. I rooted my Bell Ultra Z right after I bought it, but then I accidentally upgraded to .757, and now I need to get back to 532 to be be able to root it and get rid of all this bell crap installed on the phone. Would someone be able to point me in the right direction? This is all so confusing to me because of the whole locked bootloader issue.
hey guys, im from the UK and have not got the .69 or .402 update ( unbranded and unlocked ) could i flash the germany .402 firmware and it would have no consequences?
many thanks
J
Yes! My phone came with UK unbranded firmware and flashed the German unbranded 2 days ago. Works like a charm! Actually I highly recommend doing that ASAP cause the UK firmware is known for getting released 2 weeks later after a new firmware gets rolled out! So you don't have to worry about waiting for future updates...

I'm new to Sony myself, after 4 Samsung flagships.
Anyone care to give to some insights about what to do? Except Untick 'data' under 'wipe' when I get there? I have Taiwan Z2 on .69 which i got OTA from my previous .55
I downloaded this file "D6503_17.1.1.A.0.402_DE Unbranded.ftf" which i believe is the unbranded Germany .402
Thank you!

If I unlock my bootloader, will that wipe the data off the phone?
Edit: actually do I need to unlock bootloader to install the latest firmware?
thanks

Yes. unlocking bootloader will wipe the data on the device, so DO BACKUP.
And no. You don't need to Unlock BL to flash Stock ROM. Only to flash custom kernels and ROMs and which is not even always the case

No. Flashing stock won't wipe ur phone. I did so yesterday, with Sony Updater Service (SUS) And it asked if i wanted to wipe or not. I chose not to wipe. And it didn't. Everything working fine till now... Look at my Signature, I also.. Got to be Recognized on xda for Helping Samsung Users. But i'm a Sony Noob.
Cheers!
Long story short
Updated to 4.4.4, didn't like it, want to go back, not sure which ftf/stock room to download
My Z2 is unlocked but in the start up its shows UK O2, also it had some apps of theirs
If u flash the stock non branded stock room, would I break my device? Also would it become sim locked?
Thanks XDA

Also I don't know if helps, but for fun I looked up the codebar on the box of the phone and the results on Google turn up sim free unlocked Z2
I'm not too worried about that, I'm more worried of the branded ftf

as said flashing a FTF should do nothing at all. i had a bad xperiance one time forgetting to exclude a simlock.ta from a factory leaked FTF and it simlocked my device untill i had to reunlock it
since then i always exclude simlock.ta from flashing FTFs, never had any issues with doing such ever since, i flashed plenty of branded FTFs since.
Hi, I have a E2333 still no MM update, I don't want to wait anymore... Is it possible to flash (via Flashtool) a firmware that as a different CDA number?

Flash any customised region ftf you like as long as it's your device's model no. Only real difference is a few pre installed apps vary from region to region and some say 4g instead of lte when on a data connection. Also do include anything with simlock.ta in the ftf you are flashing as only Sony service centre can reserect it.
