I've seen a lot of youtube videos of the galaxy s II and from what I can tell, the screen is still oversaturated like the original galaxy s, with the same blue tint on white backgrounds. Any chance this would be adjusted, or even have a user-adjustable option, by release? I'm guessing a majority of people outside of forums don't care and prefer the gaudy colors, like how they crank up the color on new TVs and everyone's face looks red, because buyers prefer it. But an option would be much needed for those not so inclined to the heavy colors. Another thing I would want is a lower brightness setting. LCDs get washed out but AMOLEDs can handle lower settings and still have good contrast. With that, the ability to adjust the minimum and maximum threshold for the auto-brightness instead of one predefined setting, as well.
I doubt Samsung (or any other manufacturer) would let you modify that much in the settings. The phone is not a monitor, however I certainly see the possibilty of changing those options (or at least some) once some kind souls will start messing with the firmwares and kernels.
*cough* supercurio voodoo color *cough*
If it involves *cough* hacking *cough* I think I will have to pass. And yes, there are less industrious people around here as well.
i am pretty sure that the sgs 2 will have the same same over saturated colours and the tint(looking at review videos).i am not a fan of amoled i do like its blacks but the over saturation does my headache i prefer ips to amoled any day. if it was not their Soc's i'd never have bought sgs.

A challenging task for the devs here ...........
I only see a blue tint when I tilt the angle of the screen. It doesn't take much to see it and becomes more extreme the more it's tilted. Looking straight on is fine. I didn't expect there to be perfect viewing angles but tilting just a little the blue tint is really prominent. Easily viewed on a pure white screen.
Great phone, though I want to use the device to watch videos and two things bother me: the blue tint when not viewed straight on and the over saturated colours. The colour green is very oversaturated much to the point where I think there's green in the videos showing up that shouldn't be there! I know you can adjust the colour tones, that include warm, cold and natural. If the image looks too yellow/green then the cold setting looks a bit more natural on some videos. I would have preferred a proper configuration for adjusting the complete colour balance.
The screen is wonderful but is let down by these two things. If it's something that can't be helped then that's the way it is, but it would be great to have more control over the colour settings and if the blue tint is really a limitation of the type of screen/glass, or the first batch of phones have an inherent fault with the screen?
On thing that is also off is the gamma curve!
greys become dark too fast, shadow details are crushed, even though the screen has the potential not to do this. On the contrary, with such black levels, the panel should be able to show more shadow details.
I suspect this is a battery saving choice, rather than a screen limitation. I'd rather have an accurate gamma though.
Google will need to allow custom color profiles in Android soon!
My Galaxy S has much more natural colors than the S2 that I just bought. I can't stand the disney colors! Hope some developer will be able to fix that soon!
Is it just me?
How come you guys say that the SGS2 has bluish tint? While when I compare it to my SGS(speedmod) and my friends SGS(voodoo) my SGS2 has a yellowish tint to it? I'm a bit confused. Anyway I've bought it and my only complaint is the sound. Voodoo control plus please!
There is some degree of control (not much though) over the saturation in Settings > Display > Background effect.

The easiest way to see this is to view a white page/screen. Look straight on and then begin tilting the phone in any direction. The blue tint becomes noticeable and more extreme the more you tilt it. I wouldn't have a problem if it was only noticeable at extreme angles, but I do see it if the viewing angle isn't straight on. For phone use this is fine, not so bothered. Not so good when watching media.
Regarding the tint,
Also when i purchased the phone in may the gray was going into pink!
On later updates colors seem better! aswell i rember i posted a request in chainfires 3d drivers tread were i ask the guy kindly to add support for custom rgb mode nightmode tones...
So from his application if u play with nightmode function you can tilt your color as u like!

There is actually a post/study about this :
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1124669
Hi,
My new motorola atrix is verry good but I think the yellow is very bad on this phone.
For example the 2nd "o" of google or wood on angry birds is unrealistic, dark, dull...
Am I alone in thinking this ?
The problem can be solved by an official rom or other modification ?
Thank you.
Looks OK to me?
Compared next to my N900 (of which I think has an amazing screen too)
I'm getting used to colour change after a AMOLED, for me it feels like the screen has been through a blue rinse.
Swyped from 'mount' Olympus
You might try a higher brightness level.

Yeah I agree, all the yellows look a little green to me. When I got this bad boy I got Fruit Ninja on it and some of the fruits looked very unripe lol
Yellows are dull and washed out on the Pentile display. period. it's something we all have to live with (and most have), however those who try and say it doesn't exist are just lying to themselves. Highest brightness makes it a little more vivid, but nowhere near a normal LCD display.
You don't notice after using it for a while, I am willing to make the trade off for the bump in resolution.
When you go to another display you quickly remember what its supposed to look like though.

Have to say my screen is better than my desire and nexus in direct sun light, and with polarized sunglasses on. So there are bonus'.
Only ones better are sensation and iphone4 with a higher ppi.

Yes, you are right, the colors may vary between different screens but I tried acer liquid, nintendo ds, dingoo, my lcd computer and tv screens and for me the atrix has stranges colors.
Fortunately I am not alone in thinking this
Pity there is no application to change the hue
off colors...
I found the colors were off too so I played with the setting a bit... by placing the battery mode in performance mode it seemed to fix the problem. let me know if it fixes it for you.
Oh thank you !
When I could use my phone, I would try this solution

uh, that would not affect the screen colors at all.
Is awesome!!! Never had an HD screen before and boy is it cool! I try to look very close, but can barely see the pixels. The colors are also very amazing.
Now the question is can we use a app like voodoo screen tuner and make it even better =p lol

As much as I love the high resolution--it is AMAZING for small text--I am more bothered by the PenTile layout than I expected from reviews. I don't know about other people or how close they hold the phone to their eyes, but I can see the hatching pretty clearly in normal use on a white background. I mean, it's not HORRIBLE, but it makes the whites feel a lot less white than they do on the RGB AMOLED screens I've used. I think I need a Tab 7.7 so I can have the resolution without the PenTile tradeoffs. -_-

I read a review, can't remember which one, that was saying at full brightness the whites were incredibly white and at lower brightness settings it turned bluer. Is that true? Are you at full brightness?

It's not a matter of color reproduction; it's the physical subpixels that look a bit off. It's a subtle diagonal hatching pattern that is visible regardless of brightness. It's not horribly obvious at normal distances but I can see it. Honestly it isn't that much worse than being able to see the square pattern around individual pixels on my GS2--I was just hoping at this resolution/pixel density I wouldn't be able to see it at all.
Color reproduction isn't too bad. It's slightly different from my GS2 but I am not that picky about it, since I don't do serious photography or other art. AMOLED screens all have oversaturated colors anyway.

It's sort of like there is an overlay of tiny black dots in a diagonal pattern. As I mention above it isn't obvious especially at more than a foot or so away, but it is visible.

The screen looks fine to me. People freak out when they find out a screen is Pentile, but this isn't a Motorola pentile screen we're looking at. I'm assuming that there's a technical limitation/challenge with making Super Amoled Plus displays bigger than 4.3" or I'm sure Sammy would be using them in all of their phones. Personally, I'm enjoying the higher resolution. Can you imagine a screen this size at 800X480? It would be worse than the HTC Titan.

I hope it doesn't seem like I'm freaking out.
I'm saying this having used the phone a bit; I have it sitting right here. No argument here, it is way better than the PenTile on the RAZR or any other Moto phone I've used. And yes, I'm pretty sure you're right about the technical limitations preventing proper RGB layouts for this resolution/size, probably something to do with how small they can physically make subpixels, since it is clearly possible to have a 1280x800 Super AMOLED+ display in a 7.7" form factor. I ALSO agree that a screen this large would be awful at 800x480, and I definitely prefer the PenTile 1280x800 over RGB 800x480 at this size. I am definitely NOT saying the screen is bad, but I am disappointed because it isn't as good as I hoped it would be.
So we mostly agree. I am just more irritable I guess.

How does the screen work in direct sunlight? I am not wanting to watch a movie, but need it when working outside to read e-mail and use the phone. On my current HTC Tilt 2 I have to find shade to see anything on my screen. I have read that the Super Amoled+ screens are better. I am hoping this will work where I do not have to put on my reading glasses.
One thing is for sure, the screen definitely is an attention grabber. All of my co-workers were amazed and how sharp and clear the screen was.
This screen definitely suffers with some flash videos and dark backgrounds. I can see like lines flashing, doesnt look good at all and thats a turn off because I wanted to watch alot of videos on this. You guys can try it out and see if you see what I see. Go to veetle.com, scrolling down to any movies channel and select it, and make it full screen.....

Does anyone experience "moire effects" on the display when browsing dark text on a light background - ie. on Internet Explorer on in an Email account -?
The problem is notified on Nokia EU and Nokia USA but no response from nokia; I thinks it's a matter of display technology, the PENtile matrix is so crappy and this is one (bad) behavior.
Does anyone is affected by this problem?

Yes, it's because of the PenTile matrix, my Nexus One was the same, as is the Desire I have next to me.

I know what you mean. I came from a 4S to a Nokia N9 (same pentile screen) and had alot of doubt concerning that type of screen. Now i don't notice it and really like the vivid colors it gives. In the beginning it was a bit harsh on my eyes but that is all gone. When i see my wifes 4S screen the colors looks washed out compared to the clear black on my N9.
I don't love the screen (then it should've been an amoled rgb matrix clear black), but it's grown on me and I've come to like it alot and think it looks good.
Regards Dousan...
I can't find any moire effects. Maybe I am not looking closely enough.
I really like the display though.
I guess it's only noticeable if you came from a phone with a better display. My last phone was a SEw995i so the screen looks flawless to me
Coming from an HTC Mozart I really like the display. If I compare this to the HTC Mozart, it's much better, the dark theme now looks really dark, instead of washed out black (more gray).
There's no moire effect on mine at all. Just some line bleeding with black text on white background. But line bleeding and moire are two totally different things and I can tolerate the occasional line bleeding as I hardly ever notice it.
The screen is awesome and I've gotten used to the pentile. Things like the clearblack and the response time of the display is the best I've seen. Things doesn't smudge very easily when they are moving on the display as they often do on RGB displays.
Now I almost prefer a pentile display because of it's positive sides. The colors are very true too. When I compare photos on it right next to my 30" Eizo SX3031 wide gamut display which is a display for graphics/photo editing they look pretty identical to each other.

There are no positive sides to a PenTile display, other than being cheaper to make.
I wanted to test the super amoled screen of our sgs3 and see that black black its display can show !
Since i came from an HD2 , i thought for a while that the sgs3 had the blackest black i've ever seen.. but then curiosity came in and after some tests, it turned out that e.g the galaxy s 2 has a better black and that on sgs3 it is still a bit grey !
Also cheched a black photo to compare it with Nokia's N8 clear black display ..and got beaten as well >_>
I use Multitouch Visible Test to test the black of the devices along with the contrast of the colors when i touch the screen.
All tests have been done at night or at a very dark environment since at day there seems to be no difference.
My question here is :
Can you please confirm that this is a common thing among all of sgs3 users and not a display problem of my display ?
The gs3 lacks the true blacks that are possible with oled tech. I presume it was a compromise Samsung is making for some technical reason.
At first the grey tinge bothered me at night. Now, I don't care; the screen still looks gorgeous.
That said, when you first power on the screen, there is a brief moment where the blacks are truly off - ala gorgeous true black. The tinge might be modifiable in firmware or drivers, but I bet Samsung is lighting all the pixels for a reason.

Exactly my observations and thoughts ! Thank you my friend at least it is not only me
of course it is still a great display .
I really feel its to reduce the black clipping in dark images and videos which are prevalent on the Galaxy Note and the galaxy nexus.
There was a software solution to reduce the clipping with an app called "Screen Adjuster" which, basically reduces the contrast and makes black "grey". The plus point was that, there is no clipping then.
So I guess samsung has done the same to the S3's screen as maybe they realized that the clipping us a Pentile HD AMOLED limitation.
This maybe helps?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1688896
Surely if rooted it's possible to set up a toggle for the standard 'true black'? I used to use the s2 to read white text on a black background and it was very satisfying to see only the white text with absolutely no glow. This was one of the reasons I went for the s3 over the one x.
